Today I needed to perform a restore from a backup (using Sprite backup), but when the unit rebooted, it won't progress beyond the "smart mobility" screen.. There are the usual orange numbers in the bottom right of the screen, but it doesnt boot beyond that
I have tried hard resetting it (press both vol up and down, then power on) but I cant get to the screen that says caution you are about to hard reset the device etc etc..
Can someone please help me? This has really got me depressed. I paid a lot of money to get this imported from the UK (I live in Australia), and have found the unit so damn valuable/useful to date..
If anyone has any thoughts / ideas, please help..

Well, I can't actually see your device, however, relax Bro., the HR procedure on the HD is a bit tricky, took me a couple of trial/errors to perform successfuly, but finally I got it right.
Take deep breath, do it again following the instructions in the Manual (on CD) and it'll be OK.

Ahh man, this well and truely sucks. I have tried HR about 40 times now. Nothing.
Can't even power off the device without pulling out the battery.
First which version of Sprite did you use to backup your phone , and second if you know your rom version enter bootloader and reflash it from there.
Woohoo! I accidentally discovered bootloader and flashed a new rom from there.. pity I didnt know what my original rom was, so now I have to re-install everything as sprite seems to corrupt everything whenever I restore (meaning i have to reflash over again)..

For my undersanding only, how did you flash a new rom on your HD as I get the strong feeling this can not be done unless you have the original rom version from your operator.
Thus please explain what rom you used, what is your orginal rom as in what carrier did you get your device from.
Maybe I missed something.
Yeah... show off some of your moderator skills and enligjhten us with some nice fact and details about your flash action. From German to WWE or so ?

I would love to but as you see I can't else I would have a WWE rom on my Swiss device.
So as you see I am in the same boat as you.
I'm pretty sure he just had a matching shipped ROM

When HR, what does it say when you press both vol up and down, then power on?
did you do HR in power off? or you may try HR after reinstall the battery.
I have not met this, just my suggestion.
the reinstalling battery trick seems to work
I had tried several times to hard reset my stock ROM and finally got it to work by taking out the battery then putting it back in, then first thing hold two volume buttons and press power button on top. Weird how difficult that is!
Yes hard reset is tricky with the buttons... Now I can get it to hard reset quite easily.
1. Press both vol up & down and keep them depressed.
2. Now press the power button briefly while step 1) vol up + down is still depressed. Very important do not press the power button for too long otherwise it won't work. Just press and release...
3. Release the vol up + down keys when you see the red/blue/green stripes on the screen.
4. Follow on screen instructions

Software incompatibility can cause your AT&T Tilt (HTC 8925) screen to go "Black", without the ability to perform and can render the phone useless.."briking your tilt"
The following fix will return the phone to factory specs only if you were using AT&T ROM. This fix is NOT tested on Other ROMS:
1. Remove your SIM card.
2. Remove your Micro SD Card.
3. Do a Soft Reset.
4. Immediately when the black screen appears, press and hold the On/Off side button ( hold for 25-30 seconds ).
5. Wait for 1 to 2 minutes, until a message appears on its own, saying that the phone reboot is non-functioning due to installing incompatible software. It also asks you if you want to re-set the phone to original factory settings to press "send" ( They mean the button with the green phone picture on it on the bottom of the phone), or press any button to cancel the process.
6. Press the button with the picture of the green phone.
7. Wait for 2-5 minutes and the phone will re-set itself to factory specs.
8. Phone will shut down itself. Turn it on normally and start fresh.
Good luck!
I found this out the hard way. We should start a list of software that does it, heres the first that I found will black screen your tilt, do NOT use this.

You will black screen and lose everything with it as I found out twice on my tilt. It loads at widows startup during the windows screen.

please note that if you install "arabizer13bn277.exe" or any of its product on your Tilt YOU WILL brick the device and you will need to re-set it to factory ROM.
if u do factory rest
we will loose all the phone nos & information of contact
Im not able to sycn & save Telephone nos & notes on induvisale nos
How else can i save nos on comp

While this won't BLSOD (BLack Screen Of Death) your Tilt, it will definitely kill your GPS and should be avoided at all costs - Map4PDA.
If you install it and run it, it starts searching for your GPS and eventually hangs, requiring a soft reset to recover use of the phone. After a soft reset, the GPS no longer works. Too bad there isn't an option to manually specify GPS settings because it's a sweet GPS mapping program ala Google Maps that can switch between MS Live!, Google and Yahoo maps (plus one or two others I think...).
Man i hope this works!!!!
I got the black screen from flashing wm6.1 from htc e-club site. The new OS came up fine but when I restored my files with Sprite (only because PIM back up log couldn be found on memory card) the annoying Att animation starts but when the WM6.1 screen is supposed to come up screen goes black. Tilt WILL NOT hard reset with soft keys and stylus! I even attempted to re-flash 6.1 in hopes for a hard reset that way, but usb is even un-responsive! If this black screen reset you posted works, be looking for a donation from me!!!
Any other tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I am new to all of this...but I have read, and read, and searched, and read, and have learned a good bit. But now I need HELP PLEASE!

If you have a HardSPL, re-flash your Radio to a newer version. That can fix a black screen if you just upgraded your ROM. Just remember that you may need to try a few before it finally works.
Cant flash anything til I get it to reset.

This is from the manual -
To perform a hard reset using device keys
1. Press and hold the left SOFT KEY and the right SOFT KEY, and at the same time, use the stylus to press the RESET button at the bottom of your device. (It helps to have three hands to do this part).
2. Release the stylus, but continue pressing the two SOFT KEYs until you see the following message on the screen:
This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to the manufacturer default settings. Press SEND to restore manufacturer defaults, or press any other button to cancel.
3. Release the two SOFT KEYs, and then press the green phone button on your device.
Warning! Your device will be set back to factory default settings.
It worked for me! It returned me to the WM6.1 I just installed!

I had the same exact dang problem about the whole thing about getting the new rom from e-club and using sprite to backup and then upon restore of my back up, i just got a blank screen. I did this trick here and it worked perfectly. The real trick is step 4 and 5. I did what step 4 said to do except i held on for 35 sec instead of 30. and then after that i just pushed the send key (green phone button) a couple of times and then just let it sit for the 1-2 min and the magic message popped up! I followed through with the rest of the steps and voila! It works!
P.S. Dont forget to put your sim card back in.
Anyone get positive result from this method ?
I'm not.
My Kaiser have a black screen after unsuccesuful ROM update, and I can't flash him anymore.
Because PC recognize it as Flash Device, but noone from ActiveSynch driver's does not approach for this mode.
Any solution, please ?
I bricked my tilt after upgrading to 6.1 and using sprite backup to restore my data. I fixed it by putting my tilt in to bootloader mode by holding down the camera button and using the stylus for a soft reset. Once in bootloader mode the usb port on the device worked and I was able to reflash the rom. I will use the new method to restore to factory setting without having to reflash the the rom.
i am having the same problem as supereri and rednekvolfan. did you guys ever figure it out?
Reset worked
Hi everyone.
I had the same issue - backed up data using Sprite Backup, upgraded to WM 6.1 then restored data using Sprite Backup and the custom Device Update file that Sprite Backup requested. The phone reset and then would show the initial ATT and 3G screens then black.
I used the modified steps outlined by live2c2morrow -that are a modification of asfoor's original post and they worked.
Black screen appeared - held the power button for 35 - 40 seconds, pressed the Green Send button a couple of times then waited - 5 minutes later I received the message that the phone failed to boot and was given the option to reset the phone to factory defaults.
The key is to be patient - the screen will appear eventually.
Also - the first few times failed and I think I was inadvertently pressing the PPT or wheel buttons on the other side of the device.
Thanks to everyone on this thread - I thought I ruined my phone!
Sprite Backup - upgrade
I am upgrading my Sprite Backup to version 6 and will try the restore again.
I messed around with the phone (ATT TILT with stocked ROM) tonight. After installed a 3rd party app and it booted itself (seemed like a normal procedure). However, it just hangs on the Windows logo screen and it never gets to the Today screen.
I tried to perform a hardreset by holding both soft-keys and hit the reset button; it just does not work.
I have tried more than 20 times and no luck.
I am not sure what to do about it. Would I be able to flash the fresh ROM (stocked) and bring the phone back to live?
thanks in advance.
If you device is not CID unlocked (i.e. no HardSPL) then you'll have to flash a carrier ROM. You should be able to do this from the Bootloaded screen. i.e. Hold Down Camera and Reset. Once at the tri-colour screen just run the RUU program.
Also, with hard reset the steps I take are: hold down left and right softkeys (above IE and messaging button) for a second or two and then press and hold reset with the stylus until the message appears. Then press Green to hard reset.

The hard reset is notoriously hard to do, especially with big fat (muscular ) fingers. I use two pencils or chop sticks. Make sure that both soft keys are held down at the same time firmly, then do the soft reset . If you do it right a white screen with a warning should pop up telling you to press send to proceed. If this window doesn't pop up let go regroup and try again.
It always takes me several times to get a good press on those soft keys.

@denco7 isn't start>settings>system>Clear Storage the same as doing a hard reset?? If not, what's the difference between the two methods (just curious)... This is much easier than the usual method...

I screwed up the registry (one of the folders in HKLM got renamed), the phone rebooted by itself, and now it gets stuck at the "Touch Diamond" screen with the red text at the bottom.
The hard reset doesn't seem to be working for me (holding down vdown + enter, and hitting reset). The phone just reboots and gets stuck at the screen with the red text again.
I pulled the battery out for about 10 min, put it back in, and tried holding down vdown + enter while turning on the phone. Again, it gets stuck at the screen with the red text.
I can get the 3 colour screen to come up by holding down vdown + power + reset but I don't know what to do with it after.
I have the Telus Diamond. Hope someone can help!
I have read other posts from owners of the CDMA diamond, and the hard-reset button sequence is the same. Just make sure you hold down the VOL-DOWN and ACTION BUTTON (round center button) even after letting go of the reset button. That might be your problem...letting go of the buttons too early.

I hold them til I get stuck at the screen with the "Touch Diamond" and the red text at the bottom. I even tried holding it for awhile after that screen appears.
Hmmm...I guess there are others here that own the CDMA-version and can confirm the hard reset sequence is the same. But if you can get it into bootloader and then plug in the USB cable (with the "USB" indicator showing), then you should be able to flash a CDMA-specific ROM (possibly from Telus).
You can always use Clear Storage from the System tab in settings. It's quite the same, really!

Hi, what do you mean by bootloader?
If you mean the screen with the 3 colours I have been there. It says Serial on the bottom and if I plug in my USB it says USB.
good news!

Dont know why they dont TELL us these things...

Excellent! Using that combination of keys, I was able to get to the hard reset confirmation screen twice in two attempts, after failing miserably without the Power button! It's just the contortions required to get the Power button at the same time that's a challenge!

Alright!
Well glad I could be of some help, considering how much help the others in the fora have given me.
It just irks me that even the product manual that comes with the Telus Diamond gives us the wrong combination of keys for the hard reset. Bet you that customer service would be useless here as well.

I e-mailed HTC tech support yesterday morning, and this was their reply:
===========================================
Thank you for your inquiry about the hard reset process for the Telus Diamond.
I understand that you had issues performing the hard reset with the Touch Diamond. The printed instructions are correct. Pressing reset is sometimes difficult with the Diamond model, but the Reset button simply powers the device off and back on. I recommend my customers remove the back cover to get better access to the Reset button. By holding Volume Down and Enter and powering on the device from an off state, it begins the hard reset process. When you use the Reset button, you simply ensure the device will turn off, then back on while holding the other keys.
We appreciate you letting us know about this issue.
===========================================
I e-mailed them back to tell them they were wrong (again). I also advised him that it's physically impossible to reset the device without taking the cover off, as he was apparently unaware of that, either. I'd like to see a video of one of their people trying to reset the phone using their instructions.

Started experiencing a strange issue with my tilt today..
When I soft reset it loads the Today screen, and then attempts to search for the contact 'wszx' (these keys are located next to each other). After this I can navigate the phone just fine using the touch screen, but the only buttons that work are the directional and center buttons located on the front of the phone, and the arrow keys on the keyboard. I cannot type at all using the keyboard, and pressing any of the other buttons does nothing (except the directional/center/Power). I also cannot Hard reset because the two soft-keys do absolutely nothing. I've hard reset in the past but it no longer works.
So am I SOL? I think I've tried everything.. and now I have a custom rom, etc on the phone and I have no way of getting it back to factory rom without the ability to hard reset.
Thanks for any help.

Sounds like a hardware issue or simply a bad flash. Have you attempted to reflash the rom? Which rom are you using?
Well...
It wasn't working again this morning, but suddenly - out of nowhere - began to work properly. I'm stumped. If I ever figure out the exact issue I'll be sure to post back.
Thanks
Greetings,
I have same problem on my tytn...
Sometimes it suddenly starts working fine, but shortly it breaks again.
I have tried hard-reseting while it was working, but didnt help.
I think the problem appeared after charging my phone with a motorola v3 charger, so maybe it damaged my phone with over-voltage or something...
Anyway, if someone can suggest something i would be very grateful!
Hi I have exactly the same symptoms with my HTC Tytn II...when you power it on it starts typing letters (in my case CEDF). If the recording button is active it will start recording too. This happened suddenly and I haven't used any other charging apart from the usb and wall socket charger supplied with it.
All buttons (except front center key) and keyboard do not work. Any suggestions would be appreciated very much. This phone is only 8 months old.
Hi,
my Kaiser with dutty's WM6.1WWE ROM did the same this morning Yes I disabled the button 6 and stopped the voice recordings but all the hardware keys but few in the center of the keyboard are not responding. So I cant make or receive calls without taking the stylus out and touching the screen soft buttons andd that's pin in the ... while I am driving. I am using this ROM for almost a year now and I am extremely hapy (up to now) with its performance. When it all happened there were no activities on the phone - I woke up from a SMS notification (Yes I did receive an SMS from my bank) followed by repeting Voice Recordings. Any help will be highly appresiated! Thanks in advance!
keyboard problem
I am experiencing a similar problem with my stock tilt my keyboard does work however none of the text appears on the screen. I have tried hard reset and everything else I could think of, short of a clear storage reload. I would appreciate any help or suggestions from some of you more experienced users.

Same here
I've had it for a couple of weeks now.
I'm running WM6.1 from HTC (rom ver.3.29.422.1 from 2009-01-12) so nothing fancy here.
I even ordered and replaced the D-Pad and I replaced the keyboard (just the sticky part though). I totaly dismantled the phone and didn't find any issues with the cables.
Any ideas would be highly appreciated

Pls! Help
ive joined the gang!
I decided to flash my cooked rom ive been working on.
i hadnt changed much in the kitchen and i think the flash has went badly.
it starts booting windows and where it should state "calibrate screen" it goes white and hangs there, buttons seem to respond by lighting up when pressed.
Now when i try to get it into bootloader or even hard reset it just doesnt work.
it just restarts the phone.
before this happened the backspace key hasnt been working for ages.
anybody got any ideas??
(lucky for me i have a backup kaiser!)
I'm having the same problem. Automatic wakeup, applications starting automatically, can't use keyboard, have to to use screen to use phone etc. I've hardreset using the clear storage method, reflashed a couple of times, but nothing helped. So here I am joining the club
If it's not a hardware issue, then try to flash another radio, many of the custom ROMs here doesn't include a radio, so if it's caused by a wrong radio, flash a new ROM without a radio doesn't help.
Check the Sticky for 'how to' if not aware.
PS: Check here for something need to know..
The question is.... how do I flash the device if I cant get it to go to boot loader and the OS wont boot properly !?
I think its an official Brick!
the really odd thing I've discovered is sometimes the OS leaves the loading screen on, and when it does if I press the FN and folder key, I get explorer up but its not responding... I haven't tried inserting a memory card yet to see if I can access that.

Try this:
1. Take out the battery from the phone.
2. Take out SIM card and SD card.
3. Press in and hold the CAMERA button.
4. Plugin to your computer using the USB cable, while keep holding press in the CAMERA button.
See does it enter the BOOTLOADER mode.
Once entered the BOOTLOADER mode, you can flash a new radio or rom right from there, in your regular way of running KaiserCustomRUU.exe.(Since you already have a HardSPL flashed on, otherwise a HardSPL is needed to flash first.)
Good luck.
Edit: If the power button and the camera button is still working, you can use the regular way of entering BOOTLOADER mode, and flash from bootloader mode or flash from SD card.

To enter in bootloader mode:
Simply Switch off your phone. Press and hold camera button and also press and hold the power button..You can remove ur finger from power button when phone is switched on but keep holding camera button until u come to bootloader …Now attach the usb to ur computer and do the flashing you normally do.

Thx for your suggestion:
I tried removing battery as sim and sd were already removed due to previous attempts in fixing!
so:
i removed battery (did not put back in), plugged in while holding camera
got nothing, so held power button at same time, the green light came on, then went off, and came back on again. but no bootloader.
i tried same procedure with battery in, and all i get is the OS loading up, no bootloader no matter how long i hold the buttons.
is there any other alternative method to get into bootloader (possibly involving other button presses)?
or any other ideas.
Really want to fix this as it was my "experimental" phone for cooking roms with.
Thanks again.
Suspect you have some hardware issue with the camera button. Can you ever take a photo with it?
Edit: Did you read through every post onthis thread:
MTTY (How to fix a bad ROM flash!)
If you tried that and still no luck, you can post your questions there. There are masters will keep an eye on that thread. And generally they only have time to look into their 'subscribed' threads, chances are they will not look into here.
Edit: Maybe the procedure I told is wrong, since I call from memory, check this:

If you have a bad flash....that's no reason to worry.
I haven't had to use MTTY to recover.
In most cases, if there's no issues with the Rom itself...you can pop out the battery and re-flash the same ROM from BootLoader Mode. This will also work if for some reason your computer crashes or loses power & restart during the FLASH.
If the Rom has issues.....the flash will not complete and the device will be stuck in BootLoader Mode. At this point, you must FLASH a FACTORY ROM!!
Pop the battery off 1st, power up the device, device will power up in BootLoader Mode, connect to pc & FLASH your devices FACTORY ROM. This will restore your device back to it's original out the box settings.
The above only works if the device has been put through the Hard SPL or SuperCID process.
I personally have never tried to flash a cooked ROM without unlocking any of my devices. From what I've read what others have experienced...the flash would just fail and they're stuck in BootLoader Mode.
Myself ... I've experienced bad flashes, bad cooked roms that I've cooked, lost power to a pc & had my pc crash during a flash. Listed above is how I've recovered. There is life after Bootloader Mode.
The only time you have to worry is if your device does not power up at all
As a public chef...it's your responsibility to set the parameters of your ROM! Meaning, Radio, HardSPL, program conflicts, etc.
You are not ultimately responsible if someone bricks their phone but if they pushed the issue, you could be hit with some form of liabilty because you failed on providing a simple Disclaimer that sets the expectation.
I hope I've been helpful.....

Edit again:
And try like:
Plug in USB first, and thenn press & hold Camera, Power button etc.
I remember once I read there is a way to enter bootloader without battery, just can not find the original again.
Hi All,
Hopefully someone can help me out here. I just suffered the unfortunate fate of having the beta ROM expire on me. Now it looks as though I will need to reflash the X1 with a new ROM.
If I reflash the ROM is there anyway that I can save my pictures and videos from the internal phone memory or will they get erased by the flash? If they get erased by the flash, can I recover them after?
Is there anyway to bypass the white screen that states the beta has expired? I really need to get to the pictures.
Thanks,
T
I don't have much experience with this(I don't even see the point why your rom isn't timebomb fixed). But are you able to connect via activesync?
No, I can't connect via active sync. The only thing that I see when I connect the phone to the PC is the removable sd card.

What do you mean by "timebomb fixed"? Where do I find the timebomb fix?
no you cant recover it after flash.. if possible copy those files of yours to the sd card.. then flash.. frankly speaking i didnt know that there was a rom with a expiration.. really.. got me confuse there bud..
Hi ,
same case here. I had an energy ROM which does not have time bomb fixed and now all the internal data needs to be saved. i have also looked to many posts to seek solution and being a newbie was reluctant to ask around. if anybody has a solution pls post. this effects WM6.5 series ROMS. Thx in adavnce for help
i doubt you will get the images back i dont know what format is the phone is, if you flash over it or with a smaller rom, the sectors will be free for allocation, but if you manage to use data recovery program you might have a chance depending on the allocation size, they tell you to hard reset after flash so there is something left behind, but its interesting to know that in the tri color boot screen connects to the pc via usb so there is some communication there.
good luck
Did anyone ever figure this out?
This stupid ROM that has expired seems to prevent the bootloader from starting up somehow.
I tried holding the volume down button while pressing and holding the power button, but it always boots into the Energy ROM. Instead of immediately seeing the tricolor screen, I get the SE logo followed by the blasted HTC logo then the Energy ROM.....
I have tried doing a hard reset (stylus in the pin hole with the two silver buttons on the front pressed down) and no luck...it just boots up normally....
I really need to get my files off of the phone, but I cannot access it via Activesync (phone not visible), and the blasted screen on the phone is completely white with a stupid message. Man I am really p***** off./
If anyone here can help I would really appreciate it as I have some files that are very important that I desperately need to get off the phone...
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

I'm sorry that I still have no clue how can you get your files...so sorry
About entering the bootloader, the main point is, did you continue holing the down volume button while you are holding the power button??
Hold volume button, press and hold power button (still keep holding the volume button), wait and you will see 3 color screen....
hope you can some how to connect to the computer...
Good luck....
I keep holding the volume down button while I press and hold the power button and it just boots up normally...
I have even trien a hard reset and it also just boots up normally...
wtf....
you can also use the camera button instead of the volume keys... camera+power... that's what i do
seems as tho everyone who has this problem with the volume keys are the only ones who use custom roms
HolyChristmas!!!! That worked...it was the only %^## combination of buttons that I did not try. Thanks a million spike.
Not when I have my X1 in boot loader mode and then connect to the PC, will I be able to access the files on it using Activ sync? Right now I see nothing.....

You can plug your USB in your X1 while in bootloader, so you can flash a new ROM, you can't back-up your files from there.
glad to here that ur problem i solved
The problem solved?....50% but not quite completely out of the woods yet.
Now that I can get to the bootloader, I need to fetch my personal files from the phone memory before flashing a new ROM onto it. So that is where I stand now.
I know that the phone is somehow communicating with the PC as I was able to re-run the HARD-SPL as a test and it worked. Now it is a matter of getting the phone to be seen by the PC so that I can get my data from it....the data is very important to me so I cannot afford to lose it.
AAny suggestions short of applying blunt force with a hammer will be appreciated...

your data is already gone if you already did a hard reset, so there is no way to get it back.
The phone can't communicate with your pc unless winmo is up and running and activesync service is running, so from within the bootloader, i think it isn't possible.
You could read around at the forum on how to make a dump of your rom, then all files on your phone will be "dumped" to the pc. But i don't know if you can do that through the bootloader. Good luck
EDIT: Ow, sorry, I didn't look to the last posts, i see you already found out that the camera button already works.
To get in bootloader, try the camera button and the power button instead of the vol. down button.
I know that the data is still there for the following reasons:
1. hard reset was not done
2. when phone boots up normally I do the the custom desktop background (which is a picture that I took with the camera) before it gets covered up by that white screen with the "beta expired" message.
3. I am able to communicate with the phone because when I was in bootloader mode, I ran the Hard-SPL.exe from my PC and the phone responded by loading the hard-spl.
I also thought of trying to dump the ROM, so that is one of the things that I will try soon.
Any other suggestions of how I can access my files in the phone memory?
Just took a look at the "how-to dump your ROM" guide and it does not look feasible considering I can't see the screen because of the white "beta expired" message. However, since I was running a custom ROM, perhaps the sdkcerts.cab was already pre-installed along with the registry settings...will try it anyway.
Any other ideas?
"
2) Preparing your phone:
Before your X1 will allow the dumping to be done, the following Sdkcerts.cab file must be installed.
- Copy Sdkcerts.cab to your phone or storage card and install it to the device.
Also, your phone must accept changes that pdocread makes. You can do this with the regedit function of the FdcSoft Taskmanager.
- Set the following registry keys to "1":
* HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies "00001001"
* HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies "0000101a"
- Connect your phone to your pc with activesync.

in the future, never save info on ur device that's valuable, im sure this is the reason why u have a sd card... i learn this the hard way on my p1i
just imagine you having info on ur device thats valuable and something else had happened, your goose would have been cooked... utilize the sd card as a safe storage way and always keep backups on an external storage... even myphone service from M$ gives this...
wish u luck in getting that info
I think that I definitely learned my lesson this time around...I am usually a bit more careful with my data....perhaps a moment of insanity lead me to this.
Back to trying to recoup the data....
