Diamond screen fault/Orange UK warranty invalid after flashing? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hi there. Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. There’s something amiss with the alignment of my HTC Diamond (Orange UK – upgrade from August). It’s as if the screen is repeatedly being pressed on the bottom right hand corner (so it’s pretty much permanently cycling through PROGRAMS, REMOVE, DONE etc.). There are a number of threads floating around this forum regarding screen alignment going nuts, but they all seem to be happening when the device gets hot – with mine it happens constantly, regardless of temperature. And, it’s not just when I touch the screen, it’s all the time.
What I’ve done to try and fix the issue:
-Re-aligned screen (via ‘Settings’) – this usually takes several attempts
-Soft reset
-Hard reset
-Removed screen protector
-Tapped the four corners of the screen firmly (www.htcwiki.com)
-Opened ‘note’, pressed firmly, drawn line with stylus (as advised on www.htcwiki.com)
-Flashed back to stock ROM
None of this has made the slightest difference, so now I’m trying to get the phone returned to stock settings, so hopefully my warranty won’t be invalidated. Steps I’ve taken so far:
-Cleared internal storage (via SETTINGS).
-Hard reset
-Flashed latest (1.93) ROM from the Orange UK website (www.orange.co.uk)
-Identified SPL bootloader (VOL DOWN + POWER + SOFT RESET)
(Tricolour screen):
DIAM100 MFG 64M
SPL-1.24.Hard
MicroP-Diam (LED) v11
PSOC-Diam STAGE_PVT v0x30
-Downloaded Stock SPL from here (after reading this thread: Heeeeeellllpppp UK ORANGE SPL RESTORE. Am I correct in thinking that despite having the latest 1.93 from Orange, I still install the 1.37 SPL? ). Haven’t yet installed, but will shortly do so having fully read and understood the advice in previously linked post, and info on modmydiamond.info
*EDIT* I had problems restoring the original SPL as the screen has now gone completely ballistic and is constantly registering this phantom pressing of the bottom corner of the screen. I managed to solve the problem by pressing down on the screen (which seemed to 'freeze' it), and then, using the hard keys, navigating to PROGRAMS>FILE EXPLORER and then (still using navigational hard keys) running SSPL-Manual.exe from the Diamond (then following instructions from above thread). Checked bootloader, now says SPL 1.37. Phew.
Now, what I’d like to know is:
Have I missed something? I’ve searched long and hard on this and other forums, and can only conclude that this screen issue is a hardware fault. My first port of call is hopefully going to be returning the phone to Orange, and hoping that they fix it under warranty. Has anyone got experience of returning a Diamond to Orange after having flashed it (and returned it to ‘stock’ ROM & SPL)? All previous posters who’ve discussed possible Orange warranty invalidation after flashing ROMs haven’t updated their thread with the results. Or maybe I’m searching for the wrong terms in the forums ...
If the worst comes to the worst (and having experienced Orange customer services for the past 10 years, I’m fully prepared for this ...), can anyone recommend any reliable HTC qualified technicians about who could possibly diagnose and repair my Diamond?
Apologies for the lengthy post. I’ve tried my best to search the forums for a solution, and I’m acutely aware of unnecessary newbie posts, but I’m kinda at the end of my tether here.
Yours hopefully ....

Orange are not all that likely to go poking around in the insides of the diamond to check every version is stock. I'd ring 154 and tell them the problem, don't mention that it has been flashed or tampered with at all. They will run you through a diagnostic session and probably sort out a replacement for the next day.
If you have an Orange official ROM and Spl you'll be fine, Orange get thousands of returns daily, they are not going to check each and every one for the correct software versions, as long as it has the right numbers somewhere it'll be fine, and I think you have done more than enough to cover that.
If you have any problems PM me.

Thanks for your reply. I called Orange earlier, played a little dumb, and they did just as you said. Although the only diagnostic they recommended was to perform a soft reset (no hard reset, no clearing storage - just soft reset).
I got the feeling they've had quite a few returns, as they didn't ask any questions about whether the handset had been damaged/exposed to extreme temperatures/any other potential damage-causing scenarios. They're sending out a replacement handset shell (handset only, minus battery & SIM) tomorrow morning to swap with my faulty one. I've had issues with Orange customer service in the past, so I am pleasantly staggeringly surprised by this unusually competent level of help from them.
Hopefully I'm not counting my chickens on this one, and the new handset works and no questions are asked about any flashing of the old one ...
Thanks again,

Most phone companies just do a straight swap on the door, so im guessing thats what they are giving you?
If thats the case, then i highly doubt they are going to bother chasing you up on it even if they ever notice. They must have loads of these things coming in everyday, they will probably just ship it back to htc, who might notice, but by then i doubt they will know where its come from.
Though just giving you a new shell seems a bit stingy!

New shell arrived at 9am this morning (I may have to temporarily rethink my opinions of Orange CS ...). The only part exchanged was the phone part - I even kept my old batter cover. I suppose it is slightly stingy, but also more convenient. The replacement is clearly a reconditioned model, which is fine with me. The reason I think it's reconditioned is that the screws inside the phone show signs of having been unscrewed, and there are minute marks around the screen which would indicate it's been removed, and probably replaced. The screen also feels different somehow - as if there are two membranes connecting when applying pressure with the stylus. Not an unpleasant sensation at all though.
So far, it's working well. Super fast (running Orange's latest ROM & Radio: 1.93.405.1WWE & 1.00.25.05) with an immediate response, so I may resist tampering with software for at least a day or two! Apart from installing MSVC - Cyberon Voice Dialler is a total waste of time in my eyes.
Fingers crossed, this handset will last the distance, and there'll be no flashing repercussions from Orange.
Cheers!

orange wont check the internal structure of th device
they once tried to tell me the omnia was unable to be debranded from there firmware it took me 10 minutes to do

I sent my orange diamond back after the backlight stayed permanently on.
I was worried about them checking, but i still left the hard spl on and the rom - they didnt bother checking

would anyone tell me if i send the faulty orange phone to orange service without proof of purchase. Would they check phone or repair it without proof of purchase?
Appreciated for your replies

I've never had to provide Orange with proof of purchase when returning a phone to them but every time I did I had Orange Insurance on it which was bought when I bought the phone so they would have the details on the system.
I doubt Orange check these devices when returned. I sent a phone back for a scratch on the screen, they asked me if it affected normal operation to which I replied "Yes". They said "Are you sure because if we exchange and find the device still works you will be charged for it". I said "Yes", arranged the return and promptly tried to damage the screen further to stop it working. I gouged a crater into the screen without it failing and just had to let it go and hope nothing happened. I've never heard back from them and it's been at least 1 year.

i had this issue as well. i have tried everything then i have found that somone mentoned about AZTOR V7 rom. i had it once i remember. since my diamond came back from repair with comment: unauthorised software/unlock voids warranty i have decided to have last try.
AZTOR V7 rom solved the issue for me!!!!!!!!!!

HELP!!! Diamond Dilemma

Hi
This I think this is a weird one I'll try and explain the best I can:
A few days ago I noticed my Diamonds' touch screen was playing up, i.e whenever I pressed the screen somewhere it either a) took ages to register the touch or b) registered it in the wrong place.
I thought this was a software issue so thought I would try to re-align the touchscreen using the WinMo inbuilt tool. However I coudn't do that as it wasn't registering my key press on the start button. So I hard reset it and went through the config procedure.
Everything seemed to go OK and I felt relieved, the screen felt accurate again...BUT having used the device a little more it didn't quite feel right, it felt a bit slow to respond still (when compared to normal operation of a week ago).
I then noticed that I couldn't change my soft keyboard type when composing a text message (you normally can change this by click the keyboard icon on the bottom bar) and other apps e.g calendar etc, my keypress either didn't register or ended up being recognised a a press on the soft keys to the left or right e.g send/cancel. I thought that was a bit strange but made it worse was that on the odd occasion I did get it to register but not with any consistency.
I then experimented with other apps such as Opera which has another button on that part of the screen, that seems to be fine (albeit a bit slow).
So again i though it was a software problem, but now I'm not so sure...I've flashed with Hard SPL and a couple of the cooked roms (SwiftBL and Dutty), and tried a few different SPL's and the problem still persists. I have since reverted to the latest official Vodafone UK rom with a stock 1.37 SPL. Still the same result though.
Now here comes the tricky bit, I bought the Diamond off ebay a couple of months ago (it is the Vodafone UK version, is boxed but no voda receipt) as Vodafone wouldn't let me have one unless I was on a business contract. Like I said I don't have the Voda receipt.
Could it be the Touch screen has malfunctioned?
Are there any strange software bugs that could be causing this.
What are my chances of geting it fixed on warranty?
I need help desperately as I love the phone but now I have found the longer I leave it after aligning the screen the worse the touchscreen response gets so it becomes unuseable. I don't want to pay for a costly repair either.
All help and sugesstions appreciated.

BRICKED Diamond, where to send for repair? PLEASE HELP

I live in Australia, and have a Telstra branded Diamond, although it is unlocked ( i use Optus Sim card) anyways i was hoping to install unbranded cooked rom found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=422417
I didn't know I needed to install HardSPL, i tried but it failed so i continued on (i know I'm retarded) so i tried using the Diamond Unlocker.
I hit Next, Next, Next until it got to progress bar it stayed on 0% then jumped to 100% and said that my device wasn't compatible or something like that, at that point the image on the diamond faded to black screen. I This happened when i tried Hardspl but i just hit reset and it turned back on alright.....this time it didn't, it doesn't react to the power button at all, iv tried hitting the reset button, booting into boot loader even though I'm pretty sure it doesn't have one, and tried MTTY which I'm pretty sure it pointless because my diamond doesn't turn on.
Please share any knowledge or ideas you have on how i can fix my Diamond, or where i can send it to be repaired (I have no warranty with Telstra by the way)
Is my diamond bricked for life?
EDIT: In the hope that my Diamond will return to life by holding the power button, i have noticed i can still feel the vibration it usually makes when turning it on although NO DISPLAY

Thats the only problem, i have already thought of this, although i don't have proof of purchase anymore, can i still get it repaired without proof of purchase?
ANY Replies or ideas are appreciated, please HELP
I would contact them without a receipt you may have to pay for the repair
but I don't see why they should not make money of you repairing your broken device
Thanks for the reply, my question is, i bought this phone off a friend and knowing him he got it from someone else who probably has stolen it, so if i take it in for repairs and it is stolen I'm screwed....right?.....are they able to I.D a stolen device?
Thats what you get when you buy a stolen device. You'll pay it back one way another.
I guess but for $250 who wouldnt take it. I guess i should have read ALOT more instead of rushing a flash. So last question, does anyone know if its physically possible to fix the phone, if it be replacing a bit or get a technician to hardwire or something......is it possible? or am i stuck with a nice new paperweight?

I think its a case of what goes around, comes around.
Hey
I have a similar problem. But mine is bought and original and I have a receipt. Anyways, there's no way around the sending, is there? Because, I think, it'll take a lot of time and regarding the fact, that the mistake is on my side, the warranty is void, isn't it?

Black screen, green led

Hi all,
I need help, or at least my Kaiser needs help!
Let me explain : a few days ago I saw that my waiting cursor was turning and turning. So I decided to perform a soft reset. No luck, the screen remained black after that.
After several soft resets, I thought it was time to do a hard reset. But it didn't work either!
I went through forums, wiki and lots of search engines, so my next move was to try the bootloader. Usuccesfully, except that now the green led is on. It doesn't blink, it's just green. And the screen is still black.
I've heard of white screen issues, of multicolor screen issues, but no case of black screen with the green led.
I never flashed my ROM, I don't use any cracked software and I allways take care of my phone, so I have no idea of what did happen.
What do you think about that? Is my Kaiser bricked? any comment ? Any advice ?
Thanks in advance.
Not Bricked
Hi
Sorry to hear your device has stopped working.
I don't think it's "Bricked" in the classic sense because you haven't done anything that would have damaged the boot section (IPL/SPL) of the ROM storage area (EPROM chip to be precise). It's possible that some part of the ROM memory has become corrupt on it's own. What were you doing at the time of the soft reset? If you were renaming/replacing files in the ROM of the device using a 3rd party file explorer this might have caused a problem of this kind but not much else.
It sounds more like some kind of hardware failure. Could you have damaged the Mini-USB port on the bottom of the phone? If you've never flashed a ROM, radio or splash screen then your manufacturer's (i.e. HTC's) warranty should be intact, if the device is within the warranty period. I think HTC offer a two year warranty period, but don't quote me on that. If you bought the item recently and have proof of purchase, you should probably take the device to the shop where you bought it and ask for a replacement under the warranty.
Cheers
andrew-in-woking
Thank you but...
I'm not very proud of it, but when my phone started to be a mess, I was trying one of the "fart machine" cabs floating around the forum... Sad end for a Kaiser.
Unfortunately in France we only get a one-year warranty on this kind of product (to force you to sign for an extra warranty I guess).
Ok then, I think I can only sell it on [email protected] for spare parts now, to save at least a few bucks.
Thank you for your comment anyway.

Problem! Please help! G1 goes to sleep and doesn't wake back up.

I don't know what caused this.
I got my G1 today. It worked for probably 2-3 hours perfectly fine.
I had an app freeze (either Barcode Scanner or Lock 2.0) and had to do a full hard reset.
Now, whenever the phones screen darkens or I put it to sleep manually, it WILL NOT come back up.
I have factory reset three times now to try and get this to work.
When the screen is black, all buttons on the phone still light up and so does the LED indicator up top. I had my phone set to use a locking pattern screen at one point during one reset to test out and when the screen went black, I was still able to try and log in by doing my pattern. It unlocked, but still showed nothing on the screen.
Please help!
I've tried:
Turning Wi-Fi off
Turning 3g Off
Disclaimer: Yes, I've searched. I can find other users with the same problem but none of them seem to have a solution.
Phone is NOT ROOTED and has the factory ROM.
Update 1: Update: It only freezes/blacks out when I try to wake the phone from one of the front key buttons.
If I'm sliding to unlock, it seems to be fine.... (but if I've already tried to open from the front it doesnt)
Update 2: If I mash all the buttons in random orders for about a minute or two it seems to come back. Anyone have any idea?
Update 3: I'm thinking this has to be an issue with none of the buttons waking the phone up when closed. If I lock the phone with the "END" key, and then click the front "END" Key again, nothing happens. If I slide the phone open, and click it twice - the phone wakes up.
Update 4: Confirmed update 3. Phone will not unlock via front keys unless it's slid open (or open enough to trigger).
I would really, really appreciate help with this.
Hate to bump this, but I've added some detail on the top and bottom. Have to leave for work, hopefully someone might have an idea by the time I get back.
Well you can try to reload the factory rom or root it and try a custom rom and see if the problem still exist. If it is still happening then it would be a hardware problem and need to be sent in. And yes you will still be covered under warranty with HTC since the phone is still less than a year old.
I had a problem with exactly the same symptoms. It turned out that the SD card was cocked-up so home, core, and some other process would hang trying to read it and the phone would not wake-up the screen any more.
Did you try removing the SD card and seeing if that helps?

Removed the SD card and rebooted the phone.
No change ( still acts the same way ).
Did you factory reset after or was it an instant change?
I don't mind losing data to fix this.

Wouldn't I have to root to reload the factory rom? Is there a rooting tutorial based just on that?

If you use the official update you don't have to have root. There are some links on here. I'll see if I can find it for you.
https://android.clients.google.com/updates/signed-gfh-CRB43-from-CRB21.c88b03d2.zip
That should be it, but can't confirm since I'm on my work computer.
Some thoughts--may be useful, or not:
Mine was doing that too, but it was caused because I dunked mine underwater during an urban exploring mission. I dried it out, replaced the LCD screen, and everything worked until it would go to sleep. Then I had to do a variety of button mashes and opening the keyboard to get it to come back to life. Sometimes it just wouldn't come back. The problem grew worse over time.
If wiping and reflashing (no need to use a stock ROM) gets you nowhere, then I would suspect a deeper hardware issue. I see you bought it used, can you contact the seller?
If you want to check for water damage, take out the battery and look at the tiny circular sticker in the battery chamber--if it is not white, it has been water damaged. (And the warranty will not be honored.)
Other Lesson: No urban exploring with G1s.
The link didn't work, btw.

Zero water damage.
That's great news zeabrid! In that case, I agree with an earlier poster--you should be covered by warranty. Wipe and flash a good rooted rom, and if that doesn't work, revert to stock and demand a new phone.

Do you have a link to a guide that teaches how to do this (with the stock rom)? I can only see a few that're spread out.
I'm not entirely sure my phone can boot into safe mode/disk mode, so we'll see about that.
Another update: When I boot into safe mode, the same problem exists.
Edit: Just emailed HTC.
This can officially no longer be considered a software issue.
I just rooted and installed a standard ROM. Same issue.
It happens all the way at boot now, just realized this.
HTC emailed me back and told me to call them directly. Will do that tomorrow.
if I find a solution I'll post it immediately.
Alright, my phone is officially ****ed.
Restored back to the original rom.
New problem now: When I close the screen, the backlight goes out and doesn't come back on. (I can still barely see everything, but there's no light).
Calling HTC today.
Edit: Called T-Mo support. They suggested deleting programs to free up space (I only have 2 downloaded and to reset (already done)
=(
Edit2: Called and placed a RMA with HTC after talking to two of their customer support reps. Thankfully, they forwarded me up the support tier after only about a minute with each person when they realized I had already tried all other steps.
The RMA process was surprisingly easy. I have everything set up, and when I get paid (tomorrow) I'm going to ship the phone out. I was given an estimation of 7-10 business days for full repair and return shipping (which sounds great in my opinion - I've never sent anything in for warranty work before).
I'll update you guys once I hear from their repair team on whether or not I'm going to be covered under warranty (I told them that the phone was a gift to me), and if not what the cost is going to be. Like I said earlier in the thread, all water damage indicators are clear and I have unrooted my phone, so I should be covered hopefully.
Thanks to anyone who posted in this thread.

Yea it defitenly sounds like a hardware issue and needs to be fixed. Glad your getting it fixed and you'll be covered no problem.
Do you know if they charge return shipping if it's covered under warranty? I have to pay my own shipping there, and they had me put a credit card down on file in case I either bail when its already there or they need to charge for repair.

To be honest I don't know the answer but would like to say they would pay for it. But they would have to let you know of the charge before they apply a charge to a credit card.
wow its weird cause im just having a similiar issue now.. in landscape mode.. phone and back light work perfectly. but one i close the screen everything goes virtually blank, everything is running perfectly just the screen light wont turn on..
will try some of your previous methods.. hopefully it works on mine..=/
thanks, for the info zeabrid

"Volume down"-key not working at all

Hey Guys,
I think I did a thorough research on that issue, but could not find any hints as how to solve it.
Background: I planned on flashing my ROM and thus first of all tried to get it on HardSPL. After some connection trouble I finally got it on (though the progress bar jumped from 0% to 100% instantly after like 1 minute instead of the indicated 10... is that normal?)
I then tried to reboot holding POWER+VOLUME DOWN, but it booted just regularly. Conclusion at this point: It is not on HardSPL. So I kept repeating, but never succeeded, until recently I noticed neither my VOLUME UP nor my VOLUME DOWN button works at all. Never, not matter how hard, gently or desperately I push - no reaction.
So apparently it is a physical problem. Does anymore know it? Ideas? In another forum I read that some Palm Pre users suffer from this issue on their devices. They advised to take out the battery and leave the phone in a bag of rice for 24 hours, as it is an issue of humidity.
Now if I think ahead - I do not even have a bill, but could probably get it form the seller - if I send it to SE as a case of warranty, they will certainly/probably see the HardSPL and send it right back.
Pretty srewed thing, huh? Anyone solved this problem so far?
Thanks in advance.
