GPS Standby Hack - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hey guys,
Well I have just got the new Hyper Dragon rom on my phone and I am looking for a possible hack...
I am going on holiday in a few days skiing in the Alpes and have a GPS tracking tool called SatSKI, its pretty wicked and tracks your days activities.
Problem is, when it goes into standby or the screen is off then the GPS goes off, even though the program is still running. I had this same issue with TomTOM a while ago.
Any help would be great.
Cheers guys
Mike

Look into TrackMe, it has a boatload of features and has a Screen Off feature which keeps the phone on but turns the screen off for battery savings.
You can also try DeltaLock. But you gotta make sure the phone doesn't turn off, so you'll also have to modify the Power settings.

up
in the same boat, would like to run my satski on the kaiser with the screen off, but obviously keep the program and GPS running?
The above 2 programs are no good, as satski has the piste maps, which is what you want to use it for

You can run Trackme in addition to your ski program in the worst case...

Hi the way to keep your phone on is to change the settings on switing off a program after a period of time , in setting programs normally are set to switch off after 30 min if not used . Also be sure to use the Satski Lock screen in the Satski Menue this will also save your battery.

GPS stop when I switch the screen off

Hi to all,
excuse me if I open a discussion allready post but I tried with the search function and I din't found anythings about my proble.
The last week I tried to log the GPS to geotag same photos that I was shooting.
I used VisualGPSce and all was fine untill I switched off the screen to save battery, it lost the signal till I reactivate the screen, I had the same problem with other GPS utils to log.
I'm pretty sure that before the GSP was logged with the screen off to.
I updated the radio rom, my configuration is.
[Radio ROM]1.56.70.11
udK 6.1 R1 Lizard WM6 OS 5.2.1933 Build 18533.0.7.0)
Any idea ?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my english.

I have yet to find a solution for your GPS problems in TomTom.
This is what I do to save battery power in TomTom.
1. Turn on the safety feature (example, above 70 kph. It displays a static screen that uses much less battery power than the live moving maps do.
2. Turn down the back light.
3. Plug it into the 12v when in a vehicle.
I use NoniGPS and it is possible to have this app running in the background and switch off the screen to save battery life with a little app called Screen Switch. This app will not work with TomTom.
Hi, thanks for the answer.
I don't have the problem with TomTom but I need to screen off while logging GPS, so you solution could be ok for me, I'll try it.

Thanks to all for the hel and the answers, I tried some ways and some softwares that you suggest me and I discover that the problem is present only when I shut down the screen using the shortcut AE Button Plus, using then same function in HomeScreen PlusPlus UI the GPS don't stop to work.

Diamond wakes up overnight - what causes it?

I tried searching, honest.
A couple of times a week I would wake up and notice that the Diamond screen is on and of course the power level is low. Something is waking up the device in the middle of the night. Any ideas what it may be?
As far as I know I have no scheduled tasks:
- I don't even have email set up
- ActiveSync is completely manual
- I have klaxxon installed but no alarms set up
- no other alarms
- no scheduled backups
Is there a program that logs events on the PPC so I can see what causes it to wake up?
Hmm
Well maybe it needs to go to the bathroom or sumting?
Did you check if ur Broadcast channels or not on maybe? Under Phone/ Settings/More If its on it will happen if it switches to another reception tower
I have noticed this once or twice on both my Diamond and the girlfriend's Ignito, once I just happend to notice both screens come on at the same time and it was dead on midnight!! I couldn't explain it and to my knowledge it hasn't happened again on my Diamond but the ignito seems to do it once a blue moon!!
Rich
I shall stay up and watch it at midnight to see what happens.
Has anyone used acbtaskman? I read that it has logging capabilities which may shed some light on this.

nice pun there
when got incoming sms, diamond will wake up.
Maybe u had enable this feature.
maybe he wants some milk
i think if your phone loses signal and regains it, the screen will turn on. IF that's the case...why doesn't it turn off? So it might not be that... :/
if not SMS and not task something, maybe phone call by lovely girl every night when she thinking about u, and she close the call fast..

Garmin and jogging distance

Hello
I am jogging a lot lately and I would like to use gps to have an idea on how much I can do. Is there a way to do this? I cant find it!
hey,
i used sporty pal for a while, try it!
Another app you may want to try is G-watch.
Sporty Pal is good but it seems to stop tracking once my phone went to sleep. I'll have to give it a try again since I've just re-flashed my phone.

I use Sporty for biking, and I usually put the phone in front of me on a holder. I think a lot of people have this problem. I read an article about this, and it said that on some phones if they go to sleep mode or stand by mode, they can't get the GPS signal properly, so try turning off the sleep mode.
I have had good luck with GPSed logging my biking routes. It will give you speed, distance, waypoints, and time and will upload your routes to a server for free, plus export to google earth. I have put in 6.5 hour rides with the entire route logged accurately.

sporty pal's newest release has a fix for the gps turning when the screen does. Now when you have sportypal up and don't touch the screen for about 10 sec it will turn of by itself, but leave gps on. or you can assign a hard key to turn the screen off... just don't turn it off via the power button, that will put the phone to sleep and therefore turn off the gps.
I've been exploring this a lot lately and now love using sportypal for my jogs. great free program.
I try it, it works, no more problems with the sleeping or stand by mode.
Actual Sportypal version 1.0.7 is really good,it fixed almost all known issues and to power users give power . I like some new features on the web like goals and compare tracks
Somewhat of a hi-jack here... but how are you people mounting your kaiser to your bike? This would be awesome to have. If I got a call, I could even answer it and talk via speakerphone while I ride.
..
..........
Sportypal is really wonderful!!
You can also view your journey with Googlemaps, and collect a lot of data.
In the website you can also watch the detailed journey of other users, from all over the world
I've got TrackMyRun on mine, works very well...

Is there a program to keep GPS 'warm'

I find myself frustrated when I need the GPS fuction on my Tilt, but then it takes 2-3 minutes to locate me from a cold start. That can feel like hours when I am late and lost. When it is warm, the GPS fixes in 5-20 seconds.
It seems a program that keeps the GPS in a state of warmness (maybe starting up and getting a fix every hour or two) would really help me out. I don't have a pocket full of batteries, so leaving the GPS on all the time is not an option.
Is there something like this out there, or do I have to try to build it myself?
Thanks for any help,
Will

I've been thinking of the same thing...
2 things you can do:
1) use network location when possible. It really is better on batteries and much quicker.
2) Use a program like tasker that flips on GPS for an alotted time to get a fix every so often. I'm thinking about using a multiple profile setting that will automatically run a GPS fix when I leave my work or home networks. But it would also run once every hour when I'm away from those networks and only when I'm away.

Is it possible to turn the screen off and keep gps on?

I used to do this all the time on my TyTN 2, but I still haven't been able to get it working on my N1. I use GPS to navigate on my bike, where I can't plug it in to charge and there is no cradle. I keep my phone in my pocket, and listen to the directions in one ear on my headphones. It was pretty easy to turn off the screen of my WM and keep the GPS running, keeping the battery use down. On my N1, I haven't found any way to kill the screen without killing the GPS app. This makes it impractical for navigating around Jakarta, where I might kill my battery sitting in traffic with the screen on. Is there any way to turn off the screen without locking everything up?
Thanks for your help.
this annoys me too, and i both love it and hate it. currently there is no way you can do this without altering the maps code. the onPause obviously seems to be programmed to suspend the GPS signal when activity loses focus, and nothing short of changing that code i imagine would fix this issue.
though i do commend google for how they set android up to function this way, its different and novel, but i dont ALWAYS necessarily like it, like this situatino in particular.
I don't understand the problem. I turn the screen off all the time.
I don't have a car dock, so I start navigation and place the phone on the seat beside me, I turn the screen off to save battery and then just listen to the directions all the way to my destination.
Never had a problem.
And I've used the My Tracks program to track my mountain hikes, screen off and in my pocket.
Both ways worked both before and after I rooted and installed CyanogenMod.

weird everytime i've turned off the screen i believe the GPS disconnects, which can be seen as soon as the screen is turned back on and it reaquires the lock. even in maps if it briefly lsoes foreground focus the GPS signal stops. perhaps i never tested enough during actual navigation, but i thought this is what happened to me. hmmm
Well, try Navigation and My Tracks. I've gotten some pretty detailed longer (3-5 hour) hikes mapped. The screen was off the whole time.
And I've probably used Navigation with the screen off at least 10 times. And some trips over 30 minutes. It always told me when to turn at the right time.
The GPS turns off if maps isn't in focus and I'm glad. It would kill your battery if it ran all the time. But it caches your location and automatically turns GPS on when you open the app.
But if you start navigating the only way to get it to stop is by hitting Menu-Exit Navigation. Locking your screen is okay. I do it all the time.

Sounds like it isn't a system level problem then.
Navigation will lock the GPS on for you so turning it off isn't a problem.
The same with My Tracks then too.
So to the OP, if the program you are using is not forcing the GPS to stay on when the screen is off, you could try contacting the developer and asking for that option.
Ok I just tested this and I was wrong, when the screen is off the lock stays in tact completely and same accuracy. So if does indeed work. This was tested running navigation in maps.
I guess I should mention that I'm using igo. It was the first program I found with offline maps available for Indonesia. When I turn the screen off, it definitely loses its lock and has to search again when the screen comes back on. So, it sounds like switching programs should solve my problem. Is that right?
Edit: just opened navigation, and it says it's not available here yet. I might just have too bring my WM with me when I need navigation on a ride. Oh, well; by this time next year I should be back in the states where features aren't geographically blocked. Thanks for your help.

yeah it seems to depend on how the developer coded the app you're using. google maps navigation seems to leave the GPS on with the screen off. the app you are using must not, but maybe you could contact the developer and ask them to change this?
