Are HTC having me on? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hi,
I recently had to send my HTC Diamond in for repair because it wouldn't sync with any computers.
Had an email come back and they want to charge me to fix it as they say I've damaged it. But below is what they say are the parts that are required:
"Level 2 - LCD replacement (& Athena Micro Drive replacement only) 33.00
Labour 28.00
Delivery 6.87
VAT 10.18
Total 78.05"
My screen is fine, my phones memory is fine. Is this just an admin C*ck up or does it sound plausable?
I can't call them on the weekend as they aren't open, so I'm left stewing.
Thing is, I've had my phone in before for the exact same fault and I had to pay to fix it then as I'd damaged the mini usb connector (I did break it eventually as I was stupidly having a go at fixing the fault myself with a screwdriver) I paid up and they replaced the mini usb and all worked great for 2 weeks but then the fault has returned. This time I haven't touched it and have taken real good care of the phone.
Have you ever had to speak to their north african call centre? Its a nightmare. I'm never buying HTC again.
Sorry for the rant, thanks for listening

Ehh?
"Sorry for the rant, thanks for listening"
... we're not listening, we're reading... and then wishing we hadn't bothered

Costumer Service can generally be a Nightmare. I've had few good experiences with them. Thanks God most issues can be dealt with here unless of coarse it's a hardware problem.
Good Luck !!

That sounds insane! I'd ring them up and verify everything!

ATT Device Service Centers vs Exchange By Mail

ok so i went to a DSC today to exchange my tilt. I stated it was stuck in that "funky colored screen" (bootloader in which i purposefully stuck it in) to get a replacement. The real reason i needed it was the plastic seperator between the pins of the usb port broke off along with the 2 left pins.. yah so i should have had it replaced when it first started having problems syncing and charging but i wiggled it over and over until it broke so dont get on me sayting its my fault thats not the point lol...the point is they told me that they didnt have any tilts in stock and pretty much just put in a request to have one mailed to me (exchange by mail) and i send mine in and since it has that usb problem ill mostlikely get charged the $450 but i can glue that plastic piece back in and cover up the damage..my question is..in the dsc they only checked the water voiding pad and they would have replaced it right then and there so is the policy the same with both services..the fee for physical/water damage? like would they have read me a disclaimer in the center and taken my phone and had it fully inspected? I was under the impression that they just eyeball it there and give it the ok like they did and youre good..so i signed the paper and should get the replacement in the mail monday...should i just send the phone they sent back to them or do the techs at the center for mail exchanges just eyeball it as well? am i taking a big chance at getting screwed? or should i just try again at another DSC location that has devices in stock after i send the replacement back?..just looking for input

Here is a brilliant idea BE HONEST
Honesty may lose him $450 though (that is a lot of money for some of us).
Here's an idea, try using a return key every once in a while
did you miss where i said dont get on me about this? lol i just want input and facts
oh and i WAS honest over the phone before i put in a claim and went to the DSC and stated that HTC had changed the usb ports from pins to contacts but they have no such thing in their files nor reports of these usb ports having problems which as you can see all over this forum the first generation of usb ports on the kaiser SUCK hence the reason they were replaced..therefore it would be considered physical damage so im screwed for being honest even though its HTC's fault..
Ok, wanna know why i said be honest.
-return key- f.u.
I if you know my job postioin with AT&T you can take this info to be very truthfull. If they see ANY damage to the phone you WILL be billed. If the person from AT&T does not notice the damage, then when it gets sent back to HTC and they see damage, they will backcharge att. Then guess what? you get the charge. That is why i said be honest. I was not being a smart ass.
It used to be nobody really cared, but now you will get caught. In all seriousness i was looking out for you. But what the hell sent it back and test your luck.
But be honest and tell them it is a known problem and back up your case with printouts of the known broblem. I think you will be suprised how well they will accomodate you.

so should i bring it back to the dsc and explain to them or call the phone center. . and i wasnt trying to be a jerk. . you didnt have to say f.u. i appreciate your advice
ok well i called an explained myself and they said no matter what you have if the port is damaged its damaged and out of warranty...yay im screwed lol
The f.u. was not directed at you.
Call back and speak to a supervisor, I am aware of the problem and so are certain techs and warranty reps at att. Call and speak to a supervisor. if that gets you nothing than call cust care and complain.
warranty 800-801-1101
cust care 800-331-0500
even call data device support (THEY KNOW ABOUT IT)
dont have the number.
thnks alot for the help i really appreciate it...
yah i spoke with data device support, they transferred me to them..ive actually spoken to them in the past for this issue as it happened a while back and i just dealt with the no syncing but i had to finally go back to warranty exchange because i finally broke the top left pin (+5v i believe) from smashing it in with the usb plug as the plastic seperator isnt in place to protect the pins..
the warranty exchange always sends me to data device support. Well i think its the same place your talking about...they called them high end device technicians or something along those lines...
ok got shot down again lol...well i TRIED to get to a supervisor and explained my WHOLE shpeal 2 more times for a total of 5 times now...so tomorrow im going to try again and DEMAND to speak with a supervisor..
tonight i just thought maybe just maybe this tech would understand and know but she insisted that she checked all documentation and that this issue is NOT a known issue and referred me to htc to get a repaired or customer support to get a new handset lol so ill give it a go tomorrow..
i just really hate having to explain it all because its so complicated unless i can show them pictures of the differences in each usb port and try to help them comprehend that htc obviously changed the port for a reason...
ok so thanks to the advice of k8nds (honesty) worked and i dont know WHY i didnt think of it before...not really the honesty part lol but the calling att and talking to them..i had forgot that i had talked my way out of an early disconnection fee with my prior agreement. That is somehwat relevant but what im getting at is ATT is there for your customers...if you make yourself seem that important to them...theyl do anything for you like many on this board have attested too...so the elevated rep (after speaking to 5 techs) let me know they will note the usb issue and if there is a charge for the detection of it it will be credited back.. so HOPEFULLY the replacement i recieve tomorrow has the revised usb port..

Am I completely screwed?

So about 45 days ago I purchased a new Tilt off ebay. Big mistake but the people at Best Buy had me convinced that they stopped making them. Yesterday out of no where my keyboard went dead and my phone started acting up. Currently I can't leave my phone on without it starting the note program and recording sound clips until the memory is full.
At this point I was just wondering what my options are. Will AT&T exchange my phone for a refurbished one? Is there anyway I could sent the phone to HTC to get it repaired. Are there any reliable companies that I could send the phone to? I have heard stories about people just bringing the phone into a AT&T store and getting it swapped out. Am I out $400?
If you got it off ebay, att doesnt want anything to do with it. You can try for HTC support, but i have no idea how HTC is with that kind of stuff.
Do a hard reset, and see if that helps any.
I wonder if it's just a faulty keyboard and it's causing shortcuts to open the notes software.
What other things are happening?
Could be a cable loose inside or the keyboard circuit board could have slipped out of place. This happened on mine.
HTC wont touch an HTC device under warranty without a receipt (from original purchase) Branded devices they wont touch without them coming from the network.
Paid repairs are different, they'll carry out the repairs for you, and invoice you for the repairs. They also charge for a quotation for repairs if you dont get it repaired (£20 in the UK I think, no idea outside of the UK)
If the phone keeps recording notes, it could be something as simple as a button being stuck. my solution with old devices was to mash the buttons as much as possible, and it generally unstuck them.
If your device is 45 days old (to you) then to be fair, its not likely to be an issue that the seller knew about, as its something thats occured since then. Issues can occur at any stage in a devices life, its just unfortunate that yours has chosen now to go wrong.
If you're not looking to pay to get the device fixed, it may be something as simple as opening the case up, and cleaning around the keyboard/extra buttons and re-assembling it, but if you're unsure on how to do this, I'd recommend not trying. When I opened my old 9100 to try and clean it up, something went sproing, and I lost a spring... I could never use the bottom row on the keyboard after that.
I've had good experiences with HTC.

This isn't my experience.
I've had a couple of dealings with HTC UK and have been very happy:
1) Ebay-sourced Tornado failed screen - I phoned HTC and from the IMEI number they got the manufacturing date, worked out it was under a year old, and fixed it for free
2) ebay-sourced Artemis - I dropped it, bent the casing. I phoned HTC and they fixed it as a paid repair for 65UKP. This included a complete recase. When I noticed some of the buttons were a bit sticky afterwards, they did a second repair replacing the controls for free, despite it almost certainly being a problem caused by my initial dropping.
3) ebay-sourced Qtek 8500. Had a problem with the LCD failing when the clamshell was flexed. Again, phoned HTC UK and replaced under warranty.
They've been prompt, have native helpdesks, cheap and generally couldn't have been more helpful - definitely worth approaching them. This contrasts with, say, Nokia and is a major part of why I like HTC products.

The first thing u should do is figure out if it is hardware or software related. Just do a hardreset and see if that helps. If not, then its most likely hardware related.
Check in Settings - Buttons what button is assigned to the recorder (usually the one on the left side), remove that assignment.
The button must be stuck or the sensor below it faulty, so it senses that button always pressed.

Dont get me wrong, I wasnt slating HTC for their support, I'm with you on that one. I've just seen jobs that have been bounced back from them (rightfully so) and was just giving the worst case scenario, that being that HTC dont actually have to fix it.
the agent or att will not help you, you got it from eBay and even if they help it will be for extra $$ so you may well just override that idea
first thing we must be sure if its hardware failure or software failure
if its software then you need to read lots but eventually you will have to get a new ROM and start from scratch eliminate all 3rd party ( so i advice using stocked ROM)
look at this it might help http://rapidshare.com/files/103168855/HTC_Kaiser_Service_Manual_jas_pik.pdf
this is the repair manual for kaiser
Square Trade
After this happened to me the first time I got some bunk electronics from ebay, I started using squaretrade.com. They will give you a warranty at about 50% of the cost of a Manufacturer/Dealer warranty and have a five day fix/replacement guarantee.
I would like to thank everyone for their reply I can see this is a dedicated community.

Last night I reverted back to my factory rom but this did not fix the problem. Some odd things that I noticed that has me completely baffled is that only the directional keys (up, down, right, left) work on the keyboard but nothing else works. I tried doing a hard reset but that didn't wont since the 2 soft keys are not responding.

That manual seems very complete if I can't get HTC to fix it I will attempt to fix it myself. Does anyone know if I can purchase replacement part?
There's some hope for you. I bought my Tilt off of Ebay. AT&T warranted it from the day that it hit their network with my SIM card. So although it was originally purchased from AT&T (by the ebayer seller) on Oct 17th 2007, my warranty started December 6th 2007. No receipt required. They swapped it no problem. The TILT has a 365 day warranty via AT&T.
Just make sure you deal with a service center and not the individual stores. Go to attwireless.com and search for "TILT Warranty" .. look for the service center information.
Mine was swapped with no hassle in about 5minutes (I had a rom issue). One note if you go this route, check the replacement! My replacement has key-sticking issues (the right key on the keyboard gets stuck down, etc). The speaker (for phonecalls, not external) also is a little more muted than my old one (I sometimes have trouble hearing people). I may rewarranty it.
*edit*
Here: http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-center/main.jsp?t=solutionTab&solutionId=KB64687
The service centers are contractors (I could tell by their shirts, saying "Company Name: Authorized AT&T Tech"), so I really don't think they care, as long as they can warranty it they will because it is more money for them. Just my thought.
As the above poster said, AT&T WILL do warranty exchanges on tilts bought through ebay or otherwise. I bought one off of craigslist and had it exchanged when a key on the keyboard stopped working. No problem. It is warrantied for 1 year after it is first used on their system.
The people stating otherwise are flat out wrong.
Thanks for the advice guys I was able to take the phone to a AT&T service center and swap the phone for a new one.

I just sent my Tilt to HTC Repair re keyboard issues

I bought a Tilt refurb through AT&T and just after the 90 day AT&T warranty, the keyboard began having issues with it where some keys required harder or repeated presses to register. There was no water damage and I never dropped it so who knows why it happened. It really only happened with 2 or 3 keys.
I took it to a repair store locally but they wanted like $120 to "replace" the keyboard and assembly, which made little sense to me since I had only paid $149 for the phone.
So I contacted HTC and in case anyone else is in this boat, just because the AT&T warranty is expired does not mean the HTC warranty has expired.
HTC's warranty is 15 months and they can calculate it from the serial number. They told me I was still within that 15 month period so I am ASSUMING that they will repair it for free.
please say you reverted your rom back to the shipped version before sending it in.
this is currently happening to my "a" key...I hope it doesnt get worse
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just kidding. Yeah, I did.
this happened to me a few weeks ago. sent it to att. first refurb i got back had a broken screen..second was fine just the slider was misaligned. how can you tell if there is still an HTC warranty on the phone?
Call (888) 354-2375 and read them your serial number.
htc charges you a $30 triage fee upon inspecting the device and then they ill notify you of whats wrong and if its covered..
I was told the triage fee is waived if the problem is covered.
I am having the same issue with my "s" button. i have to press it twice as hard to get it to register half the time and this sucks when you have to use your phone for work emails and such.....
im going to call that number here shortly to see if my phone is coverd still....
thanks for the thread....
I'll post back news when I hear back from them and when I get the phone back.

Yikes i just called and the guy on the phone told me "it would be about a houndred and forty-five dollars to fix that"
I asked about the 15month thing and he said "that only covers factory defect, a failing keyboard would deffinately not be covered"
I said "yeah ok thanks buddy" (hung up)
wowsers.......
the phone to me is not woth 145.00 to me now when the Raphael/Fuse and HD are so close. ah hell i could probably just buy a refurb from at&t for that much.
i hope you have better results than i did just now.
i will be monitoring this thread in hopes that it works out for you.
30.00 50.00 not so bad 145.00 nah im cool.
fingers crossed for you.
it wouldn't surprise me, but if a failing keyboard isn't considered a factory issue than nothing is.
A warranty should cover anything short of physical damage.
it really sucks that they told you this isnt factory issue.
I bought my device NEW from ATT and I have the same problem.
I was hoping this was ROM issue... but I now see it's not... too bad
just keep bothering them...make them be in your shoes..words can work magic but persistance can get you what you want dont give up just keep bugging them and getting higher personnel
This started happening about a few months after I bought the phone. My V is terrible my A is bad and my S is also bad. I thought it was a ROM issue as well. but now I have to press V extremely hard for it to register. I bought my phone sometime in December of 07 or Jan 08. Can't remember exactly when.
hi everyone, I got my tytn 2 from orange last october and I have the problem with several letters as well. I called up the HTC repair centre and told them it was really annoyed me cos i kept on missing letters in the txt. I sent back my device and fix it under warranty without charging me anything. Fixed in 5 days with UPS delivery. Very good service. Just call them up and try
good luck
I did the same thing. My TyTN II was still under the 15 month warranty thru HTC. They turned it around within about 2 days and had it back to me. They replaced the keyboard and the flex circuit.
They were supposed to call me when they had it to discuss what the issues were, but I never got the call. I wanted them to fix the misalignment issue between my top and bottom half (off by about a 1/16"), but they never did that. When I inquired after I got my phone back, they told me that "physical issues with the phone are not covered under warranty". Only software and internal board related issues.
They still have my phone...haven't heard whether its covered or not...or how much they will charge.
If these guys are anything, they are slow.

WOW htc has the WORST cust Service!

I just hung up with htc. I sent my 2 Kaisers in for repair since I just recieved my touch pro.(yes i spend too much money on phones) I was talked down to like a 4 yr old by the first guy, then after DEMANDING that I speak with a supervisor, he transfered me to Britney (1-888-617-1113) She told me that one of my phones, the one that I sent back for the z key and h key hard to press...Told me I need a new motherboard and lcd! for the low low price of $438.15! I said, how do you get to a motherboard and an lcd when I had problems with 2 keys being hard to press? She replied that the technition said he couldnt get the lcd to start up (being an eet, I asked if they test upon arrival or after initial tear down (we are a pioneer service center and people are human) was my reply to her after I learned they tear down for initial testing. Am I just up in the night or is this the most ridiculous load of B.S. I have heard for sending in a phone with 2 bad keys! does anyone know if the keyboard is part of the motherboard? Its not like you couldnt just go and buy a new phone at att and do a "gutswap" and return it! (I dont like to be that guy but Britney is making me!) I just need someone elses opinion...
thanks for listening to my RANT!

Faulty Kaiser, Problems with HTC repair centre UK

Hi all, I have had my kaiser since july 2008. in october i opened the slide mechanism and one of the keys must have came off into the slide mechanism and the phone keyboard wouldnt shut properly (you could see where the key came off that it had not been properly glued down so this was a manufacturing fault)
About a week before this the phone usb port developed a fault. Sometimes it would not charge when plugged in but most the time it did so i planned to send the phone off for repair anyway.I sent this off about a week later towards the end of october.
I sent it off to the UK repair centre at milton keynes. I waited around a week and then i received an email saying it was not covered by the warranty, and was being charged £35 for the repair which they called part plastic refurbishment. As i did not force the keyboard slider or cause the fault on the charging port i refused to pay this and spoke to somebody in the uk offices to why i was even being charged this amount for something which was not my fault.
He emailed me around a week later explaining that the charge was for the black plastic which surrounds the middle of the phone as it had a deep scratch on it near one of the corners( which was only a scratch no cracks etc and hardly noticeable unless you really looked for it they sent me a photo blown up about 100000 times so i could see it) and could not be fixed without replacing this.
I refused to pay it so they sent me the handset back the middle of december. When i received it back suprisingly the slide mechanism had been fixed the button was still the same, the charge fault was still there plus it had a new fault, When i inserted my SIM card and switched my phone on it told me "the sim is missing" i tried 4 more sim cards (new and used) and it still had the same message.
I phoned up the HTC customer services the same day i received this back to tell them of this fault plus i told them that the slider had been repaired but not the usb or the keyboard they told me to send this back. I sent this back 10 days ago due to the christmas period. I have received an invoice today asking me to pay for the part plastic refurbishment again at a cost of £35 with no mention of the USB, Keyboard or the SIM fault. It just seems to me when you call the call centre its just full of drones who follow a script as i have explained the faults on more than one occasion. Since i have bought this phone HTC has had it in repair more than i have had use out of it. If anyone could give me any suggestions contact numbers email addresses , Advice on where i stand legally on this i would very much appreciate this.
Thanks in advance

To be perfectly honest, your phone looks like it has been dropped quite hard on that corner - there is casing damage to the upper half (circled chip) and also a few chips out of the adjacent part of the bottom half. To get those parts to chip like that would take quite a bang. My Kaiser is over a year old and has been dropped loads of times onto hard surfaces (inculding gravel and concrete) and nothind has chipped like that.
Good luck with getting the repairs done. I guess the best approach will be to be a pain in the arse with them - always ask to speak to someone senior - rehearse and learn the UK consumer rights and quote them to HTC reps (but don't get stroppy on the phone). If they say someone will call back, wait until 1 minute after the specified time then call to complain that they didn't etc, etc. I did this with a Hermes (which I'd broken myself) and in the end they gave me a new one to shut me up.
