Sat Nav with up-to-date Maps? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

Can anyone recommend a PDA Sat Nav application with up-to-date maps, camera alerts & traffic?
I have been using TomTom Navigator 6 for 2 years, but TomTom has now told me this is obsolete and no new maps will be released. TomTom 7 is not available in the UK (they told me) and there are no plans for a new software release.
I therefore tried ALK CoPilot 7. They also told me their maps are over 18 months old and will nbot be releasing new ones. They could not give me a date for CoPilot 8.
Garmin Mobile XT 5 appears to cost £100 for map subscription alone (although that is for a lifetime) and does not appear to have a traffic subscription service that covers most roads (only some 'FM service').
Nav N Go iGo 8 is not portable onto my 16gb MicroSD card.
Has anyone used Wayfinder Navigator 8? I am a little concerned that it relies on the phone signal in case you go into a poor reception area - which is exactly when you will need a Sat Nav! Any reviews?
Or does anyone know of an alternative for the UK?
Cheers,

2 questions about ATT Tilt (8925)

I am currently an ATT customer, I am thinking about getting ATT Tilt (8925) but:
1. If I want to use the GPS on the phone, do I have to purchase a plan for GPS? I mean I have my own software that I bought and I am thinking about installing that software on the Tilt, can I use that software without purchasing any plan for GPS from ATT? so basically what's required for me to have so I can use the GPS? once again ( I have my own software, I am NOT going to use TelNav )
2. Why is the Tilt cheaper than 8525?
Sure do!
I just purchase the Tilt, and I Have to pay 9.99 a month for the telavev GPS service. $39.99 for the unlimited data plan, and $ 59.99 for 900 minutes, free nights & weekends, and rollover minutes on any att service. ( ie. Cell phone, home phone, etc. ) I now have one Bill from At&t for Home phone, Mobile phone, and DSL service. I haven't recieve my first bill yet with everything on it because I just got the tilt today on Oct. 5, 2007.
the other alternative is to install TomTom (or another Pocket PC GPS application) and you won't have to pay to use ATT's Telnav service. i'm using TomTom 6.0 and it works great.
the Tilt is the replacement for the 8525 and is superior in every way; WM6, 3.0MP cam, 128/256 RAM/ROM, Micro SDHC (supports cards over 2GB), tilt function, included GPS. Go with the 8925; i had bought the 8525 for the WiFi primarily (unlimited data plan FTW) and as soon as i found out the Tilt/8925/TyTN II/Kaiser was coming out (a little over a month later) i was kinda ticked. Earlier today i walked into an AT&T store and by chance they had one, so i bought it, and couldnt be happier. I have no clue why the Tilt is cheaper than the 8525 considering the 8525 was $445.99 two months ago with no plan compared to $499.99 with no plan for the Tilt (literally) today.
To answer your question regarding GPS, no, you do not have to subscribe to TeleNav; there are several programs that work on it just fine; check out Garmin's Mobile XT for $99 bucks (Micro SD format) or Google maps is free and supports GPS. TomTom Navigator 6 also (supposedly) works.
I have a Pioneer AVIC D3 DVD/Navigation system in my car so im not worried about navigation on my phone, but my girlfriend drives all over so its likely she'll end up using it on my phone at some point or another; its a fantastic feature that you dont really have to pay for.
To clarify:
To use the GPS capabilities of the 8925, you DO NOT need to pay any extra money to AT&T other than your normal data plan. You can use the GPS capability with any program that takes advantage of it. Google Maps, MS Live Search, are examples that provide GPS tracking features as part of their free programs. Or you can buy a Nav program like TomTom or Route66. Those will cost you more, provide more Nav system like functions, but DO NOT require any extra subscription to AT&T.
However, it you want to use the TeleNav service that they are selling for the 8925, then yes, you do need to subscribe and pay a monthly fee.
In order to use Google Maps + GPS support, won't he need to initiate a GPS sat lock with some other type of software?
I've tried using both Google maps and Windows Live Search on my AT&T Tilt with no luck, "Unable to locate GPS" or "No GPS device found"
I haven't installed TomTom yet, but this will be my next step...
I've updated my QuickGPS data and no go still
What is the default com port the GPS sits on? (For you Tilt owners)
I got my Tilt 10.5.7, the USA release date

It works fine by itself, and the GPS is so well integrated you don't have to do anything to turn it on or off.
By way of a reply:
1. No, no plan is necessary for GPS. You can use the GPS (on COM port 4) for anything you like. If you want advanced functionaliy, such as turn-by-turn directions, then you'lll either have to pay for Telenav, or purchase stand-alone software to get the job done.
2. My guess, (and that's all it is) is that the 8525 promotion hasn't "caught up" with the Tilt promotion yet. Give it a couple of weeks at most and the 8525 should be less expensive than the Tilt.
I walked into an ATT store today and asked to see one. I touched it. Bad idea.. now I have to sell my 8525 and get one!!
Is there any freeware for Telenav on the Tilt
than paying $10 per month
like we did on the Mobi Tv & Xm Radio

Com 4, 9600 baud rate.
Get GPSTest, (free), it will find and initialize your internal GPS, quickly. Then start up your iGuidance or TomTom or whatever software you prefer.

TomTom discontinuing Navigator ?

Through conversations with a few folks I've learned that TomTom is apparently contemplating ceasing any further development on any products for PDA's. They are apparently no longer supporting Nav6 nor will they provide any further map/poi updates for Nav6. They had apparently begun development of Nav7/8 but have suspended that project until a go/no decision is made.
This decision is apparently being driven primarily by significant bootlegging of maps (their primary source of income with Nav software).
I have gotten this info second-hand, but believe it is reliable. Has anyone else heard anything along these lines?
Interesting...
I had to call them to help me activate my maps on my fourth replacement tilt. In the course of conversation, I asked about new maps. And the answer was there were new maps but not for navigator 6....they were developing navigator 7 and were in the process of determining "viability." When I asked if that meant they were thinking of discontinuing it, he backpedaled and said they just want to make sure that everything works with such a wide variety of devices to support - palm, symbian, windows mobile.
With what you heard, it sounds like it could be a possibilty. Shame. It's a good program...
I agree, it's an excellent program and I get a lot of good use out of it, I hope they continue to upgrade and improve it. The ONLY thing I don't like about TomTom Navigator 6 is that it doesn't have Text to Speech, it would be nice to hear "turn right on Yuba Street then turn right on California Street" instead of just "Turn right then turn right".

They released new maps this past week for the Nav6 as well as all their other products.
Until you see this on their web site it is just someone's rumor.

Do you know if those truly are new maps? After installing TT on my Kais and downloading the free map for my metro area 5 days ago I've found a large number of outdated things including 1 year old streets not in TT and POI's 1 to 4 years out of date. I'd think that they'd want the map they give you for a trial to get you to purchase from them would be the most up to date.
Can anyone tell what the exact version is of the new maps? From what I can read about them is that they are version 6.75 but they done give the build number. I already have version 6.75.1409. Just wanting to know if they really are newer maps.
So use Google Maps.....
It doesn't have text to speech either but it is FREE! and I suspect the real reason TomTom are no longer going to support the PDA version. Very powerful - search for "KFC" and it will find all the nearest with clickable links to websites, phone numbers, driving directions from current position, from an input address from a contact etc. Everything you could want when you need to top up on Kentucky Fried Chipmunks.....or whatever you need to find.
Of course as it is "live" and downloads maps on the fly you better have an unlimited data plan. But it is cool driving along in Satellite View!
HINT - the CAB is not seperately downloadable. You have to download it direct to your PDA - last time I did it was about 1.5Mb. Though once you have the CAB in memory you can back it up to your PC.
These are not new maps - they are the same as what i downloaded several weeks ago.
This has also been confirmed at the following site
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=400322#400322
"TomTom have today announced the availability of the v.7.20 maps from the Map Shop as well as the v.8.05 maps for the GOx30 users.
All existing map versions that were previously available from the shop have now been replaced with the new v.720 maps for all PND’s except the GOx30 series. GOx30 owners can now buy new map version v.8.05. Anyone contemplating a map purchase is advised that the maps are device dependent and therefore it is important that you select the exact device model you own to ensure you receive the correct map.
The 7.20 and 8.05 maps are based on TeleAtlas 2008.01 data.
The 6.75 maps will remain available in the Map Shop for NAVIGATOR 6 users and Automotive units (Eclipse, Daihatsu, Toyota) Note: Rider and Rider 2 users can now buy the new v.720 maps (premium maps) from the map shop."

The one big disadvantage of google maps is that it DOES require that live connection. If you are in a poor reception - or no reception area - it is hard to get those directions. For me, i would rather have it sitting on my device and just be dependent on the satellites....instead of BOTH satellite and cell tower.
I don't think the have stoped developing v7 because the new HTC Daimond comes with v7 intergrated in the rom. This can be found in several artical on XDA.
There is much to like about google maps. As you mentioned, they are constantly updated, fairly accurate, have tons of useful info, allow you to click on POI's for info, to call POI, or link to POI website.
Unfortunately it doesn't have turn-by-turn capabilities (at least that I've ever seen) or allow you to keep maps on your device (besides costly when roaming, I seem to always find areas without cell service). It doesn't determine your direction of travel with an arrow, only shows a dot. These are the biggies. Some of the route planning and other things that TT or Garmin have are also useful but missing from Goog. Google's love of learning anything and everything about people for their own profit is also a bit disconcerting. Them knowing where I've been, where I am, and where I'm going is perhaps too much.
Telenav only works in the US, Garmin is coming out with their own phone to avoid the pirated maps/revenue issue...
Darren Griffin from PocketGPS forum has written the following statement
"In Amsterdam last week I quizzed TomTom on this and whilst their future plans for PocketPC were vague, they did suggest that piracy had been major issue and 'if' any future releases were planned they would most likely only be in partnership with manufacturers. "

Google
Google does not offer voice guidance or turn-by-turn maps. However, Google does offer a traffic overlay which is free (TomTom charges) and does not require updates.
Oddly, it seems to take TomTom about 10 minutes or so to get a GPS lock. Google (with GPS turned on) seems to take less than a minute. I have never understood that

Tech support indicates that they have no plans to discontinue the Nav6.

Yep, same here, TomTom has a lock and is showing my location in at most 60s when I turn it on while driving. If I'm sitting still, it's less than that.
The Tilt does not seem to have much luck getting a signal when shielded from the sky, however.. Even sitting in a restaurant near a window I've found it completely unable to get a signal but it locked on in <15s when outside. I always mount my Tilt on my 'grip' mount on my dashboard so it has a reasonable view of the sky.

Do you have aGPS enabled? That will enable you to get a lock even inside of buildings, or anywhere that has little or no view of the sky.
I hope they do move to navigator 7 at some point as I like the idea of things like map share that are avaliable on the go 720 tomtom models.
Looks like there will be TomTom 7 for Procket PC.
There is a news item on MoDaCo website.
http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-professional-news/268462/tomtom-7-coming-to-pocket-pc-soon/
i get a quick lock on tomtom, but poor refresh updates from the GPS chip, so its laggy as.
TOMTOM also dont support the kaiser, TYTN II, or the OEM Branded ones, so getting support is a pain (even though my bloody phone came with tomtom on a CD!)
My GPS Reception jumps all over the place too. very unreliable.

Best GPS software

What is the best GPS software that works on the Diamond and why?
From what i can see the big ones are:
Tom Tom
iGo
Destinator
Route66
CoPilot
Google Navigator (yeah ok the wildcard!)
Do any of these have built in/downloadable speed cameras, and do any have traffic information?
I'm sure everyone is else will be asking the same question in about 1 week
Personally I like tomtom the most, it might be that im just used to it cuz I was using it for few years, Garmin mobile xt is pretty decent too. They both have speed cameras/ traffic but it's an extra service. I think traffic is free but you have to buy speed camera locations
i have used IGO,Destinator, Papago & TomTom.
Currently, I have TOMTOM on my diamond and it works great! I think TomTom is very user friendly and provides good info. You can get fixed red light cameras and fixed speed cameras.
I hope this helps

I have Garmin Mobile XT, it is pretty good. When you arrive at the destination, it tells you whether the address is at right or left side of the street. It is especially helpful when you are on a wide street with 2 or more lanes each side, you can be prepared to go left or right. On the other hand Tomtom does not tell you whether the address is on the right or left side of the street. Otherwise they both are comparable.
Just my 2 cents.
What is the difference between Google Navigator and Google Maps?
I´m not able to install tomtom on my diamond it does not find the maps any ideas?
best regards
Herby
I've always used Tomtom. But it hasn't been updated for two years and there is no news of a new verison coming out yet (apart from the usual rumours). I'm going to try Copilot 7.
Copilot was always good (had it years ago) but had a clunky interface. Looks pretty good now its had the interface re-done in the latest version.
Not a bad review of it here...http://www.trustedreviews.com/software/review/2007/11/01/ALK-CoPilot-Live-7-for-Windows-Mobile/p1
Don't know about Destinator or Route66. Never used them. And from other posts in this forum I don't think iGo will work. I think it will only run off a copy protected SD which rules out the Diamond, but I could be wrong on that.
Anyone know the situation with iGo?
Also any previous users have any comments about Route66 or Destinator?
IGo is locked to the micro SD card it is supplied on which is a real shame as it makes putting this application on to a device with no card slot impossible. It also makes it impossible to copy the app/ maps onto a larger card so once you have bought it you only have a small amount of free space available unless you are happy swapping cards all the time where a card slot does exist.
I would consider looking at Route 66, its a decent application although the maps are around 12 months old which seems strange for a very newly released application (version 8 for PPC). These maps are around six months more up to date than the v675 map which is the latest map release that works with TomTom Navigator 6.
Tried Destinator and never bothered putting it back on the PDA, too slow and clunky for my taste, I also have Co-Pilot Live 7 and that seldom gets used because I find the interface too slow although once you get used to it its a decent application, another one is Sygic Live, great potential but the version I used tended to route down back streets, narrow lanes etc to the extent I didn't trust it - Mike
I currently have TomTom and MioMap on my Touch Cruise.
I prefer MioMap.
I have just made the switch from CoPilot 7 to Garmin XT. Garmin seems to have more functionality- or maybe I'm more familiar with it because I have it in my car and it's EXACTLY the same interface!

So it seems everyone has their favourites! How about from a speed camera/traffic update point of view? Please correct me if i'm wrong.
It seems all of them charge for speed cameras with some anual charge, but by registering for free here you can get an up to date speed cameras POI for the UK for free. http://www.poigenie.co.uk/speed_cameras
There are also other versions around compiled from the official tomtom update and other sources.
For traffic, it seems again they all charge unless your using TMC - which the diamond doesnt have (right?).
Since iGo doesnt work i'm now split between TomTom - because eventually we'll get a v7 rom / and Garmin - because alot of people seem to like it.
I think Copilot speed camera updates are free. But they charge for Traffic info (bout £35 for 2 years ).
Do any of these sat nav apps come with card readers seen as the Diamond doesn't have an SD card slot.
I'm assuming most of these are supplied on SD card
Thanks
I have MioMap3.3 and TomTom V7 on my trinity, I by far preferr MioMap but I have to use TomTom because it has more upto date maps and knows more POST codes than MioMap.
I dont think you have to have an SD card to install either of these programs and they both work perfectly.
I have tried Tomtom, Garmin, Navigon and iGO8 and I think that iGO8 by far is the best one. I think there is a version for the Diamond but I do not know if you can by it without the phone...
It is however quiet easy to install the regular version on a Diamond even without a SD-slot. Just use the searchfunction and you will find an answer in this forum.
I have Tom Tom and it is working fine

TomTom Vs Garmin Vs McGuider

Hi,
I am looking to buy new GPS software for my Kaiser.
I am currently using a dodgy copy of TomTom7 that came on my second hand Kasier a few weeks ago and am so far very impressed with it.
Right now i have a shortlist of two. How do McGuider (am looking at 2009 version) and Garmin (XT version) compare to TomTom7? Should i throw Route 66 into the mix?
I never used Garmin, but I have tried Tomtom and McGuider. The main differents is that McGuider has a lot more eye candy, Really very Nice!
Whit both I had no complaints about the 'voice' and the instructions (dutch).
Only downside from Mcguider is that it is sometimes, a couple of meters, to late whit corners and the recalculation is a bit slow.....so don't drive to fast .
thank you.
Expansys are doing a £10 off deal just now so i can get McGuider 2009 European Maps for around £45 or Route 66 8 UK maps for just £25. Seeing as i have only once had a car outside of the UK in the last 5 years the euro maps are far from essential so it comes down to how good the interface/operation is and how good the UK maps are.
Anyone used Route 66 8? have read mixed reviews so was hoping some of you folks may have first hand experience with it.

Are you talking about Garmin 3D map? I've never heard about ... Is it a totally new stuff that Garmin gives?
Also, I'm running iGo8 on my Kaiser, but I used to play with both Garmin Mobile XT and Tomtom. I dont know why people prefer TT rather than Garmin, may be just people in Europe ... To me Garmin is better in North America. And one more annoying issue in Tomtom is that, to quit the program you have to go to the final page of the menu ...
Yep.....its an awesome map....work flawless
TomTom MAPUPDATES
I vote for TomTom7.910.
Downloaded TomTom Home2.5 FREE from tomtom.com
Got myself a FREE account at tomtom.com and it worked great.
Activated FREE map-updates & i've always got the latest maps (Benelux 8.15.2024 with 5000+ corrections).
Which program can compete that?

I tried TomTom 6 and Mobile Navigator 7 from Navigon.
TomTom is muuuuch easier to handle. In Navigon the buttons are so small and therefore not good to be pressed while driving. TomTom is intuitive and has the best performance in my opinion. Just don't use the biggest cards (like complete western europe) Then it will lag like hell if you browse the maps manually.
But I don't use navigation with my kaiser since my car got a tomtom one which can be used without any expensive and kaiser-specific car- or poweradapters The only bad thing with it is, that the kaiser has a better display with more lumen.
I've tried Tom Tom and Garmin, and vastly preferred TomTom. The POI database was much better and Garmin was a bit sluggish on my Tilt. The only complaint I have with TomTom is that it, if my phone is muted when it opens, there's no way to unmute without closing and reloading the program. It's also a bit ugly, but it just works too nicely to complain.
I tried iGo, but could never get the program to fully load on my system without crashing.
Garmin vs. Tom Tom
I have Garmin and have tried tom tom and I have to say I like Garmin XT BEST!! I can help you get garmin xt for free if you want, let me know.
Agreed. I've tried Garmin and TomTom7 on my TYTNII and hands down prefer Garmin. Much nicer general appearance of application, both easy to navigate and map display much nicer on the eye on Garmin. You just get that feeling and TomTom just didn't do it for me...

which gps software you use in the us?

hi
I just moved from europe to the us and i am wondering what's the best gps software?
I used to use tt6 in europe and i am now using garmin mobile xt.
Why they don't have us map for tt7???
there is US map for both just search the torrents website.
what ???
tt7 don't have us maps, according to there web site!!!
Garmin is 20 times better anyways.
well some features are great in garmin mobile xt but i really think that tt is better!!!

I have and use tt7. I have US and Canada maps.
TT7 is much better than Garmin in my opinion. Each to is own.
Copilot Live 8
I am using Copilot Live 8.
They just turned on the live services, including traffic and local search in the US.
The base price of the software is around $35.00 US. A one year subscription for Live Traffic and Local Search is $19.99 USD.
The software has a nice interface, and works well with the Tilt.
@ greywolf1965
where did you get tt7, the maps are not available on there web site!!!
I use OnCourse Navigator 8 and I find it very user friendly. It has US maps and thay seems to be from the same source as google's (I know because in goolge my street map info is wrong as in OCN8 and it used to be good two years ago)
Tomtom doesnt have lake maps which is just one reason i like garmin better. I used to use tt7 with us and canada maps, but then i tried gamin and its like night and day. There are us maps for tt7, but you get us and canada, which is almost a gig of maps. With garmin, you can build a map set of whatever you want and not be forced to carry around maps of places YOU WILL never go. Like i said, garmin is 20 times better
I use a combination of Garmin Mobile XT and Google maps on my Kaiser depending on what I am trying to do. I lost my free internet, so I had to get my own, so I just bought a data plan through T-mobile, so all my personal internetting is done that way now.
The Garmin works well; I hate the routes it tells me to take, although it pretty much always gets you to where you need to go one way or another. The biggest problem I have (maybe I am doing it wrong) is when I want to search for a city such as Jackson, WY, I'll start to enter the name of the city, and it'll bring up a list of Jacksons from every state in the country, and you have to browse through them yourself to find the Wyoming one. If I type J-A-C-K-S-O-N then a comma, WY it won't take it.
It should have a QWERTY keyboard on the touch screen. It will tell me arrival time, but it won't tell me how long it'll take me to get there. I have to calculate it myself, and I'm not sure if it'll take into consideration time zone changes. It'd also be nice to be able to scroll the map with the buttons on the face of the phone as you can with Google maps. That way, it can be done one-handed easily.
Garmin's day/night function is handy to have. All the US maps fit on 1.2 GB, which isn't didly squat for today's storage needs.
Problems with google maps include not being able to get phone calls while your data session is moving data, and when you're out in Timbuktu with no cellular coverage, you're dead in the water. Which is ironic because I never get lost in metro areas. I can always dig my way out one way or another, but when you're not sure if you have to go another 50 miles yet or you missed your turn and have to go back, that is when a GPS is nice to have. But in places where these scenarios actually happen, there's no phone coverage.
