Diamond VGA or smooth video capture? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hi. So it it some time since Diamond is in our pockets. Thanks to this community we have fast ROMs, we can play smooth VGA video, and we have good battery time and wi-fi,GPS,GPRS,EDGE,UMTS reception. And, we CAN use hardware 3D accelerator. So, what we made, what some amazing people here made is a damn progress!
So, I think there is only one thing to solve - Camera.
Well all know, that Diamond has WM devices normal quality camera. But, there is big problem - speed. In dark areas, camera is almost unusable, and video record has about 5 FPS. And this is very bad.
I am not developer, in fact I am interested in HW function only. Yes, I have some basics of assembler and C++, but very little, just enough to understand the HW. So, is there anybody with some idea, how to bring some speed into our cameras? Or at least some Xperia features like VGA record or 25FPS? I think there has to be a way. You poeple have done amazing things that even HTC screwed. I would like to help, but as I said, I am not the right person. But for some ideas or registry tweaks or testing my Diamond and my free time is ready.

Sample video, it is awful :(

The video created by Kaiser is terrible!
Look into the example in this thread. Those people were just walking, normally.
And the video result is really bad, blurry on movement.
Did I do something wrong?
maybe there is a configuration section where you can set it to 25/30 frames per second¿...
No, there is no configuration like that.
I can only choose "video mode" and resolution.
No frame per second setting.

With what kind of device are you comparing it to?
Another cameraphone that performs better, or a real video camera?
I have zero expectations from any cameraphone. They all have abysmal quality, it's a fundamental reality with the compromises in optics and sensor size needed to keep the phone portable.
I think you do something wrong...
Show in THIS Thread and you will see what a Video can look like. The Video there are very ok to good in my opinion..

Entropy512, I dont compare with other device and dont expect a very good quality. But I compared with the one created in this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=328201
Like mentioned by SKSAustin.
As far as configuration, if you look into the camera, there is nothing special there, no fancy or detailed configuration.
You can only select resolution, which in this case I use 320x240.
So, I still cant figure out why the video was so bad.
It could be, because of the "indoor" situation, not enough light? Then the autofocus was not fast enough.
I have not tried outdoor btw (will do today).
But still, if that is the case, then it sucks!
something is wrong you have 3fps in that video

Doesnt resolution = quality?
I tried a quick video last night (poor indoor lighting conditions) and i got exactly the same result - so hopefully it's merely because of the poor lighting.
I'll make some other vids and post them when i can!
This is very bad... but at the same time very funny to watch. They move like Akuma in Street Fighters...

Great, i can't open MP4s anymore! Quicktime comes up with:
-Error -2401: an invalid sample description was found in the movie.
lame!
Ok, I can confirm that this kind of bad video is caused by the indoor situation.
This morning, I created outdoor video something like in the other thread and it is nice.
See in the attachment.
Glad it was not a problem with hardware!

Yeah...that's great...
So, anyone with a little photographic background/experience could have thought up the explanation for your 3fps problem....: in low light the frame rate goes down like the shutterspeed on a regular photocamera would.
Sounds perfectly normal/plausible to me
Ihave the device and I would give the following scores to the camera:
Close up Mode : 9/10
Pictures :8/10
video : 8/10

I am visiting this forum looking for info on the TyTNII, as a replacement for my Nokia N95. I like the form factor of the TyTNII a lot, but things like the camera is really, really bad, when you are used to the N95.
The frame rate of the N95 is 30 fps in full vga resolution, meaning 4x the res of the TyTNII, and it doesn't drop to 3 fps just because of lower light levels. Besides, the still photos of the N95 is years ahead of the TyTNII, so if the latter one scores 8-9/10, I guess the N95 scores 20/10...
This is actually very sad for me, because I have been looking forward to the TyTNII since the first info was leaked, but now I am not so sure I want one after all, for this and a few other reasons. Hopefully a new ROM will fix some of these issues.
If you are going to tell me 'it's just a phone', then obviously you haven't tried the N95. It really goes a long way to replace your normal digicam. Nice to only have to carry a single device, and obviously the future.
you may want to check to make sure you do not have multiple other programs running when you go into video mode (memory crunch may slow performance)

I think the N95 took great pics too, but do you think it's fair to compare the two? I think it's more fair to compare the E90 to the Tytn 2 as I think these two devices have more relations, than a multimedia device like the N95
Certainly, TyTn II is not for you
I have not and will not try N95, even though the camera and video might be better (obviously, because N95 is 5 MP), because simply Symbian is not my preferred Mobile OS.
Oh btw, I cant live without built-in qwerty keyboard ... that's all.

1. The N95 really isn't a multimedia device. It's an advanced smartphone with extremely powerful hardware, but that label doesn't sell It does just about everything the TyTN II does, only lacking the qwerty and touch screen. Screen size is about the same and the resolution is identical. I prefer the Microsoft OS over S60, but that is my personal preference and I must admit that S60 have some very strong points over WM (and vice versa, of course).
2. I don't need the qwerty, but that doesn't mean that TyTN II isn't for me. Previously I have owned the Magician + a few MS smartphones and latest the Mio A701, so WM is by no means new to me. A few months back I got the feeling that it was time to replace the A701 and with TyTN II nowhere in sight, really I could see no WM device being a serious competition to the N95. So I got the Nokia, my first mobile of that brand for about 5 years
So, with the TyTN II now in the hands of normal users, I decided to have a look at this site for info and unfortunately it looks like even TyTN II can't compete evenly with the N95 on all points. All is not lost, though, if the compression algorithm is updated to something less destructive. I do believe the cam hardware of TyTN II is better than the current software, which can only be a positive thing. So HTC, bring on the first firmware update, please

Buying a Kaiser

Hello everyone,
I currently have a Qtek 9100 (Wizard) and, since I'm changing my phone operator, I have the opportunity to have a brand new phone at low cost, and I chose the Kaiser.
BUT, reading a little bit forum like these, i falled on the issue of the "missing" hardware acceleration of the graphic chip.
What I am looking for is:
* Having the same video quality with my Wizard (TCPMP, under WM5, i'm totally satisfied and I downsample my videos, i won't be annoyed to do the same).
* Having at least the same other capability that I use (PocketOffice, WIFI/GSM etc... Web browsing ...)
* HAVING A "REAL" KEYBOARD (not on screen only)
Do you think I should buy something else ? What should i look to ?
Thank in advance and sorry for my frenchy english

Apart from the Video acceleration driver, Kaiser is great. I think soon there will be an accelerated driver available, so Kaiser will be finally the best

I hope you are right(about the driver).
All the screaming for hw video accelaration is somewhat out of proportions. With a cooked ROM, configured for performance, the Kaiser is a fast efficient and well-working unit.
You can playback livestreamed youtube videos perfectly with TCMP, high-resolution and bitrate content such as movies won't run smooth unless you downsample them to a more fitting resolution and bitrate. Then they'll playback ok, unless you're an audio/videophile.
As for graphic performance, ported old classics such as Quake and Duke3D runs ok with framerates of 30+ with no problems. All kinds of 2D-games works just fine. Of course, really hefty modern 3D-stuff will give you more problems.
All in all I find the Kaiser a great device with a fantastic community that will probably keep it "alive" in terms of modding, ROMs, tweaks and hacks for a good while into the future. What bugs people, is the fact that it got a great potential hardwarewise thats not fully utilized at the moment, particularly due to the lack of those drivers.

Me too
So the video will never be worst than a Wizard ? Ok
Do you think I should wait like for one month if HTC does the jerk and release a new generation Kaiser with HW acceleration that will not be available on current releases ?
Finally, i don't want to be offensive toward all to your great jobs done on ROM modding (i actually mod everything i have, my routers, my iRiver etc...) but will the performance acceptable if I don't intent to take that risk (actually i will try to mod my old wizard first when i get the Kaiser) ?

True that, the Kaiser camera isn't that great, but its not that bad either. Depends a lot on your preferences i.e. do you expect a mobile phone kind of camera or a semi-standalone camera like the dedicated cameraphones of SE and to a lesser extent Nokia, Samsung and LG.
Personally I found that taking pic's when the cam is set to 1 megapixel, brightnes to -1, -1,5 or -2 works way better than in 2 and 3 megapixel resolutions Its faster, better with light and produces 1280x960 pic's thats mostly ok for normal computer use. That said, you don't buy a Kaiser if you want a standalone-camera replacer.
The camera can probably be considerabely improved by ROM-upgrades, hardware video accelaration and better camera software.

yes, I agree. But when you want to make a quick picture of something, it is almost impossible. But for steady pics its ok.

difference with Hermes model

Hi,
At work, we have about 15 Hermes (or SPV M3100) devices.
they are great and especially when we think about flashing them and working with application on it.
I was thinking to buy a TyTN II for my personal use, however as i do not know it so well (except was is on HTC web page), i would like to hear your experiences ?
if someone had also Hermes model before, it could be great to know comparison.
thx.
A.
If you are looking for a business device and don't want a PSP or DVD player in a phone...
Then this is the one...
ok, i've read those articles...
seems to be bad for HTC.
ok anyway i will not watch a movie on this PDA.
max, i will only read/write emails, use it as GPS tool, develop some applications, and for sure reflash ROM...
to take pictures or to use it for video conference is not the purpose...
but is it so bad for picture ?
i mean comparing to Hermes pda ?
thx.
the Camera is brilliant outdoors and in bright light. But low level lighting causes horribly low FPS, although saying that, if you take pictures in low level lighting, they are still quite clear, it's just difficult to take them becuase of the crap FPS on the viewfinder.
and what about the new WM7 ?
will it support it ?
I would imagine at some point one of the ROM chefs will bring out a WM7 ROM. They did with WM6 for the WM5 devices, but I have no idea how long that would be, or even if it would be possible.
From the write-ups I've seen, yes people go off about the video drivers, but those that use it for the purposes you (and I) want it for and have upgraded from the Hermes like the device. It has more memory and built in GPS. I came from the HTC Universal (XDA Exec, Orange never released a version I don't think) which is from the same era as the Hermes and the Tytn II is as good or better. I don't think you will regret the upgrade, but it's your money. PS it will play video's if you re-encode them to a smaller size / lower bitrate.

Diamond2 vs TP2

Having a really tough time deciding which to buy...
The TP2 does look very compelling in this video...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kz4TKMypIg4&feature=channel_page
Well... The Diamond 2 has a better camera...
It might be a little smaller... and cheaper
The TP2 has a keyboard, And it has some interesting features for business men
In my country I'd pay 150€ extra for it... Which I wouldn't do.
If you need it for business, Take the TP2, If you just want an excellent phone... Go with the Diamond 2

Agreed. Main factor for me was the size: TD2 is perfect in that respect for my kind of use, and I do not miss keyboard (if I have large amount of text to type, I have a laptop or a workstation anyway). Keyboards had much too much bulk for the advantage they offer imho...
Design-wise, the only think I would change on the TD2 would be a slightly larger screen, if that is possible keeping the overall size exactly the same, and more physical controls (side wheel for scrolling, more remappable buttons). At a led flash, mainly for having flashlight always handy ;-)
IMO People should not be having trouble with this decision.
You either want a phone with a physical keypad and don't mind it being slightly larger OR you would rather have a smaller phone instead of a physical keypad.
There are other differences but they are small.
One thing though .... the TF3D interface is obsessed with scrolling. On the T2 this can be like having to win a game of Teeter to be allowed to call someone or select an application. The physical keypad on the P2 has direction keys. Maybe someone can comment on where (what parts of TF3D) these can be used in.
If you turned off TF3D (escape from Teeter) then this won't be an issue.

Absolutely. Turning off TF3D is the best thing I ever did on my TD2. My word does it fly now! And no more stoopid scrolling through enormous lists!

Is there a way to start the HTC Music player without TF3D?

I use all the standard plugins plus WMP Status 1.0, TodayAgenda and Cash Organizer 2008.
I don't use any "Today replacement" plugins because I actually use the standard Today screen and think it's the best way of getting all the info I want on one screen.
The TF3D music player needs to have TF3D enabled. I use WMP, hence the WMP Status Today plugin.
TodayAgenda is the best thing since the news of Jacqui Smith's sacking.

30fps Video Record?

Is there a way or tweak to get the camera to record at VGA or WVGA @ 30fps? I have a 14 month old daughter and im constantly taking pics of her for the familly ect and noticed that when recording video the framerate is very laggy or slow motion like. The iphone 3gs records great video quality and the N1 has better specs so id assume higher frame rate on record is possible with the N1 also.
Any thoughts anyone?
Thx Guys!

People trip me out some time with there smart remarks.
If you like carrying around multi devices good for you. I have a stand alone camera that does video record ect but my camera is not ALLWAYS on me.
The same way the Nexus is good for multi media such as mp3 / and watching videos but I dont go buy a PSP or ipod touch for that I use my phone. The point of the high end phones these days is to try to limit carrying multi devices on you at all time.
With all the hacking / ports / tweaks going on just wanted to know if 30fps video record was possible. If you dont know how or dont know what im talking about please do reply with BS. Thanks.

i don't think he was in a bs kinda tone. hard to tell on forums
you'll thank yourself later for using a higher quality camera (dedicated camera) of any kind for videos one day. proud parent here, know whatcha mean about wanting to capture the cool 'new' moments.
now then, as far as recording, i'll bet there are settings you can change for it someday. right now the video quality is pretty darn good. just dumped a couple of videos from mine today. frame rate is quite good, picture clarity good, fps decent.
IF YOU FIND an app or way to up the settings, PLEASE update this thread in your original post.
Yeah, Im not trying to come off negative to anyone. I have a decent standalone camera that can take great pics and video a 10mpiexel cam with ful vga record. With phones tho its so MUCH MUCH MUCH more conveient to beable to snap a picture and have that picture allready able to send as MMS / Email / Up Load to facebook ect...
With the standalone camera I have to take mem card out - load to card reader - copy pics to mem card on my nexus - ect...
Just too many steps. When I had an iphone 3gs for a lmited time I was amazed at the video recording quality from a cell phone.
Now with the nexus with specs better then iphone I dont see why we cant get full 30fps at WVGA or VGA res. With 1ghz CPU and 5mpxl that should be possible right out the box. Seems like its definetly possible and im all for the ability to carry less devices.
it would be great if we could get 30 fps on the nexus. my under powered n97 does 30 fps and its video quality is a step up from my nexus for sure. kinda disappoints me that the video quality isn't just as good as my previous phones.
the moto droid (with lower specs) can do 30fps with some hacking... im sure its some setting in the rom that we can change
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/19647-increase-camera-video-quality.html
HTC Desire with similar hardware does 30fps.
I don't know if it's HW or SW limitation, though. Did anyone try to record video on Desire ROM and can verify the actual fps?
Well, the Desire ROM allows for WGVA recording. I do not know about all the fps stuff, but I do know that I am recording in WGVA.
You should be able to by modifying the camera driver in the kernel and the build.prop. I'll look into this when I have the time, but I found the line that should control frame rate. A commit says that not all cameras are stable at 30fps, but how's that ever stopped us?
