HTC Encryption? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

Can someone give me info regarding the "Encryption" program included with most Roms?

It allows encrypting the contents of the microSD card, so that if someone steals it from you he can't read it.
Beware this means the files on the card can then only be read by your phone, if you want to insert it in a card reader hooked to your PC the files will be unreadable, and if you forget to / can't disable encryption before hard resetting your phone, all the card's contents will be lost.

Please help me! I need to get my files.

okay. so today I upgraded to wm6.1 on my Att tilt after the upgrade i could not open any of files saved to the storage card. The error message "There is no application associated with (file name). Run the application first, then open this file from within the application" comes up on all the files i try to open that were saved on my storage card. the icons have a lock at the corner and they all end in " 38201faf". all of my files saved on the storage card look like that. anyone have any ideas? if i need to clarify anything please let me know.
What happens if you put the card into a computer?
Did you forget to remove your storage card before upgrading to 6.1? The instructions clearly state to remove your storage card or you will lose all files on it.

Not true,
What about if you are flashing a ROM via the SD Card? How do you remove it then?
Edit:
To the OP, I'd go with what Chum suggests, what happens when you try and read it from your PC using a Card Reader?

No offense but flashing from SD isn't all that easy and if the OP didn't already try and read it from his PC I doubt he did an SD flash.

[Q] Is there any possible way to unformat a microsd card?

Basically, what the title says.
There are a lot of data recovery applications if you search Google for "data recovery sd card". Not sure how well any work and someone may have recommendations but definitely don't write anything else to it

Try Recuva using a deep scan to try to recover any files you can. No guarantees.
You can recover data from sd card with card recovery software, see this solution: sd card data recovery
helped me last time.

Though recuva is very good in retreiving files from fromatted media, it is not the answer to his question.
His question was: Is there a way to UN-FORMAT a microsd card.
Recuva scans the formatted card, finds files and asks for a place on your PC to place the found and restored files in. Recuva does this job very well. BUT one thing recuva does not do is: Restoring the Root-tree.... And that suuuucks badly because you now have a map whit 100.000 files in it. Some sub-maps filled with files but you are not able to rebuild the tree to place it back to the SD memorycard.
So therefor i think the O.P. asked if there is a way to UN-FORMAT a microSD card...
And the question is still unanswered.
(Yes i can google, so that is not the answer where we are waiting for.....)

Unsupported SanDisk SD card problem after factory reset

Hi guys,
I have hard-reset my Moto G 2nd Gen after some confusion. I have taken the SD card out of the phone before resetting it. Now after hard-reset, when I insert my SD card into the phone, it says "Unsupported SanDisk SD card" and ask me to format it to use either as a portable storage or as internal storage.
This card has some important data of mine, e.g. Photos, whatsapp backup and few other backups. How can I solve this problem? I want to use this card as is in phone. Can I take backup of it's data if it's required to format this card?
I know I have asked too many questions, I hope you can understand my situation here. :crying:
If your SD card was formatted as internal storage it's almost impossible to get the information back since when you format an SD card as internal storage it gets encrypted and the key is stored in the device, so when you hard reseted your phone the key was lost, that's why it can't be identified.

as you said "almost impossible", is there any way to get the info back? Moreover, if I had left the card in the phone, would it have changed the encryption of sd card?
It most probably would've been the same if you had left the card in the phone. By the way you may want to take a look a this "Decrypting Android M adopted storage"

Thank you for sharing this page. This is a very good article, but it talks about having the key from device, which I certainly don't have. So, it seems I can't use this method to recover my data.
I, however, used some data recovery software on this card, which would show some data, but not all. Can you suggest me some good software to recover data from this card?

Hello. Did you ever figure out how to get the data off your SD card? I am in the same boat. I thought I was safe having everything backed up on there, but, nope...
Thank you

I cant recommend anything but im replying with a warning. Encrypting an sd card will eat up the already short life span of it. Many cards start having corrupt files after a year of constant backing and moving of files. Be careful. It could cost you everything on there. Just trying to look out for your stuff.

thanks, but my phone was stolen a month ago with a 256 sd card full of everything and i do not want to have a repeat so id like to secure the sd card somehow, at least with a password? or any other way to prevent others accessing my data if phone is lost or stolen?

I would just encrypt it, then make backups via USB cable to your pc. If lost or corrupted you have your data but they don't.

Hmm not sure, I haven't used any myself but maybe someone else can suggest one. The USB cable should work in the interim though, to copy files from encrypted sd (while in phone) to pc without having to decrypt the sd card first. I know it's not a solution, but it could be a workaround for now.

Android has SD Card Encryption built into it. It should be under your security settings

Yes but OP wants something that also works in Windows. The built-in Android encryption feature requires full decryption of the sd card before it can be used in another device (unless using USB to connect the phone with the encrypted card to pc).

Stable Cross-platform Encryption is rare. I mean you could probably find an app for both windows and android, but due to the very very low demand for it, I dont see it being that efficient.

Help! Gpt partition

Okay, so I inserted my SD card into my moto E5 and chose to format it as internal storage. I ignored the warning that told me once it was formatted to be used as internal it would no longer be able to be used in any other device. I of course ignored this thinking they only meant id have to reformat it and lose all my stuff on their when I did, but of course once formatted I could pop it in anything. Now I realize I can't reformat it, at least I don't know how. I have tried using the app a parted to delete and create partitions and volumes etc, I have tried to use disk part in windows to clean, modify read only attributes, convert gpt, delete repair etc. Nothing has worked. Is their a way to get rid of the gpt partition on my ONN micro SD card and then reformat it so I can use it either in a different phone or anything at all? Thanks in advance

You should be able to go to
Settings/storage
Select adoptable storage
And format it as portable storage
Sent from my ali using XDA Labs
Already tried that. Doesn't let me. Gets to 20 percent real fast then i get an error. Its not showing as being read only. At first when I would try to format it or anything it would say write protected. I must have fixed that part cause it doesn't say that anymore. Every command I push to it in aparted and disk part says it completes successfully, clean, delete partition, delete volume, create partition, etc. When I insert it into the Motorola it tells me my transcend sd card do I want to format it as internal or portable. Both options now fail. When I use an adapter and add it to the computer I can only see it in disk management and the only option not greyed out is delete option. When I put it into a rooted s4 I can view it just fine, and says it's 74% full, shows all of my original folders I had on it but all those folders show as empty. It shows with a 16mb volume and a 15861mb partition and lists both as primary.
