Microsoft FINALLY opened up the POP3 ports for Hotmail, Live, MSN, etc. accounts. That means that we can get our email on our devices again without installing that stupid Live program.
This is especially great for me because the newer version of the Live Mobile program was crashing my Manila and freezing my email tab so I had to uninstall it.
I just set up my hotmail account and it worked immediately.
Here's what you need to do:
1. Create a new mail account
2. Don't put the real domain. For example, for hotmail, I put "hormail" because the device will automatically tell you to go to live.com to set it up. You can change your email address after you put in the server settings.
Here are the settings:
POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995)
POP SSL required? Yes
User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example [email protected]
Password: The password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live
SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25)
Authentication required? Yes (this matches your POP username and password)
TLS/SSL required? Yes
Click to collapse
Do all of this and click "Finish" then go back in and change your email server back to what it should be.
Click Send/Receive and you will get your mail.

This is great! Thanks for posting this, now I can free up a few megabytes on my device. I have always hated that I couldn't check my email on older devices that didn't support the live application, like my Mobilepro 900C. I was never a fan of the live app anyway, as I could never choose what happened to my mail on the servers if I deleted it on my device. Thanks,
Dave
How to get *all* sent emails to show up
Thanks for the heads-up regarding this. I'd heard Hotmail were going to offer a more standard form of POP/SMTP access one of these days. I've configured my Kaiser accordingly and it shows all my received emails fine and emails I've sent from my Kaiser fine but emails I've sent from my desktop PC do not show up in sent emails on the Kaiser. Is this what others are getting as well? How do I get all of my sent emails to show up as well?
Yea, only emails sent from the device will show up.
Glad to see other people find this useful as well.
You're welcome.
thank you so much

No problem. I'm really glad to have my hotmail back also.
For some reason, I can't get this working in Thunderbird on my laptop though or even on Outlook.

hmm well good luck with that.
Synchronizing folders
I'm can setup my MSN e-mail accounts using the method mentioned earlier.
However, none of the my personal MSN e-mail folders show up for me.
They do if I set up the MSN e-mail using HTTP protocol (and use Adrian HTTPMail Provider) instead of POP3 protocol.
Does anyone know how to get the personal e-mail folders to show up and synchronize using POP3?

I'm using Outlook 2007 on my desktop with 3 POP email accounts, calendar, tasks, etc.
Is there a fairly simple way to sync and push email to my Tilt without having exchange server available ?
Thanks,
DLD
Direct push is for exchange 2003 & 2007 only, it has nothing to do with the outlook client. Why don't you setup the pop3 on your phone? On my phone I have 1 exchange account, and 2 pop3 accounts, and it works great.
You could always try Emoze - http://www.emoze.com/ - some people love it, some people hate it. Not tried it myself.
Other options include using Live Mail - which supports push in WM6, or setting up a Mail2Web account. You could then create a rule in Outlook to forward any received mail to your new address. You might be able to configure Live Mail to pull from other Pop3 mailboxes (I know Gmail does this, but I don't know about Live Mail). That way all three Pop accounts end up in your Live Mail bucket, and you sync just that one account with your phone.
Any good?

I could do that, but then I'd have to manually check for mail.
It would just be nice to have blackberry-like mail arrival.

you can tell the phone to check every 5 mins for emails? that's just as regular as blackberry. battery sapping tho. its in the advanced section of the messaging setup. you can do it on symbian nokias too.

I like the concept of XpressMail (using SMS notification, therefore good for battery life), though I've had little luck getting push to work. It rarely, if ever, worked on my MPX220. I eventually accepted the fact that I'd simply have to do a send/receive when I was interested in seeing if there was new mail. Now that I have the Tilt, I'm having the same reliability issues. It HAS worked... I've had a couple messages show up all on their own, but for the most part, they don't. I've gone into the online configuration @ https://xpressmail.cingular.com/, and found that I had not only one, but two devices set up (my MPX220 set up twice). I deleted both of those, but for some reason can't seem to get the Tilt added. I can go through the process, but once I select it, it just never gets added to the list. The list of emails online is correct, so obviously the xpress mail app is properly getting the emails from my mail provider (comcast), but it's either not sending out the SMS messages, or they aren't being interpreted correctly by the phone.
I had a situation where i needed to syn with 2 exchange servers, and i didnt' want to run a desktop app.
Google for "seven beta" and get the OWA Out of office. You can set it up to sync only email and it works like push off of the OWA of exchange. If you don't have exchange they have a desktop version. Seven is the same people who develop the xpress mail for cingular.
I have tried to make a new account, but afterwards it just forwards to the hotmail homepage. I want it to work with the integrated Outlook. And in the live program I'm using another account than hotmail to msn, so it won't do any good to check sync with email, when it's another account. What can I do?
It needs the config information. The easiest way to do it is with Windows Live for Windows Mobile. Search for WLM here or PM me & I'll send you a RS link. You want 10.6.033.2100 BTW.
Actually, I think you're SOL if you're already using WLM for another account. POP email isn't available for Hotmail accounts, only for MSN accounts.
unless you pay and upgrade to the 19.99 a year, you will not get POP access to any hotmail account
So my only solution is to pay up, or it will not work in outlook on TyTN?
I have it configured on my normal PC with no problems.
I just installed seven and it works great. I asked the same question on another board today.
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/htc-kaiser-tytn-ii-t-8925/222543-must-newbie-issue-email.html
Isn't there a plug for Outlook anyway? If you wanted to, just install it from Microsoft.
http://email.about.com/gi/dynamic/o...S74p5AsZCAG2yP5bLTnQvU6m2ivmwN3459c5fMw%3d%3d
And the seven solution for AT&T uses Xpress mail, which requires your Laptop to be On and Connected to the Network. What kind of crap is with the AT&T and Xpress mail?!
And good luck with the BETA program...

What do you mean you login with another account? You have an IM account and another email account?
maybe pocket MSN will work for you
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/software/pocketmsn.mspx)
Any Windows enabled phone should come with the Live Messenger enabled.
On the MS web site, there a lots of apps
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/software/default.mspx)
The Windows Live app only allows for 1 Hotmail/MSN/Live accont to be signed in at once. If you have a separate ID/account you use for IM and another for email you will have to switch accounts back and forth. This will obviously be a huge hassle and not worth the effort.
I would recommend downloading another instant messenging app and using the Windows Live app for your email account. Unless you pay $19.99 /year you can not get Hotmail emails to work with the WM messaging clients without signing into the Windows Live app.
Hope that helps clarify things.
Yes it does But I would like to perhaps use Skype as voip and chat and IM as hotmail tjecker, but do I just install Skype or should I also be using some voip.cab to get it to work?
Thanks for your help.

Good call on linking IDs. I completely forgot that you could get your emails all in one inbox. The only problem I could see would be not having the right email address show up on messages you send from the phone.
Can you quickly describe how you linked them?

i have had free hotmail synced with outlook before
Hi,
My law school uses Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) for e-mail exchange and I am having a bit of difficulty getting it to connect to my ATT Tilt (w/ 6.1 default rom).
The main problem is that unlike my Gmail, the OWA doesn't have any options for enabling forwarding/POP/IMAP.
A faculty member of the IT department had sent out an e-mail last month with instructions on how to sync the OWA with IPhones and I tried to follow his instructions, but the problem I am now running into is that the Tilt requires a server name (I believe it is mail.uchastings.edu) and a domain name (?????).
I would appreciate any help if someone can help me with this. The server will not get the settings itself since I can't enable POP or IMAP.
I set almost everything perfecting, except when I tried to to connect to download mail, it would take me to the page that requested my username, password, and domain name. So i believe I am putting the domain name incorrecting since I tried a variety of my login.
Are you trying to use active sync? That is what it sounds like

I don't mind using activesync (although I prefer to be able to use the internet to access my mailbox).
I know you can access it through the web because when I attempted to get it working, I followed the following steps:
1. Clicked on Outlook e-mail
2. Server address: mail.uchastings.edu
3. Fails to obtain settings
4. I tell it that it is an Outlook server, not internet e-mail
5. Username: myusername
6. Password: mypassword
7. Domain: ????? (don't know what to put)
8. Asks me what items I want to sync (Mail, Contacts, Tasks, Calendar)
9. I click on Send/Recieve and it takes me back to the screen which asks for items 5-7.
That is the problem I am having and I believe it is probably the domain name that I am messing up on since I have tried to do a variety of my username and it won't work.
The e-mail server (OWA) is Microsoft Outlook, but it is inside a webbrowser. When I click on options, it won't give me a Pop/Imap option so I have to set it up as an outlook e-mail.
Hope that clears some items up.
You cannot sync Outlook Web Mail with Pocket Outlook in standard POP3 style. You would have to setup either Exchange Push Mail, or just log in to OWA using Pocket IE (gag).
The iPhone is able to sync using the Exchange protocol with its latest firmware that shipped at the launch of the 3G iPhone.
-Edit-
You need to uncheck the option for Outlook to auto detect your settings, and then select Exchange server from the options. I would then contact your school's IT department and ask them for the settings required to setup your phone to sync.

by active sync I meant wireless active sync through exchange. I would confirm the server address with the IT department and you will also more than likely need a certificate if SSL is used which it should.
domain I would imagine would be uchastings
From my experience with wireless activesync the certificate is 99% of the problem
Thanks guys for all the help. There is a guy at the IT which I have been e-mailing who is helpful, but the problem is he doesn't have a Tilt so he doesn't know the actual set up. I can post his set-up (which shows the servers, etc step by step) if that might be a bit more helpful to you guys also. I am hoping that once I get a chance to go up, I could meet him in person and see whats going on.
wireless active sync is all the same for windows mobile devices. The only thing that is different is that on wm6 devices importing the ssl certificate is a whole lot easier.
what is your the url for your owa?
the server name should be the same url minus the /owa part
for example if its blahblah.com/owa the server would be blahblah.com
be sure to ask for the certifcate

The url for the e-mail is owa.uchastings.edu.
When I got my first e-mail from the IT department exampling how to obtain access to the e-mail server, I was told that for the first time, my username for the e-mail would be uchastings\username. However, now I just user the username without the uchastings\ part to access my e-mail.
Also, would the server be owa.uchastings.edu? The IT rep told me it would be email.uchastings.edu.
Try This
For username just type the username without the domain.
For the domain try uchastings.local and see if that works.
And make sure that the box for SSL connection is not checked.
you might also try a program called Chronobis to sync Outlook OWA to your device.
Its very basic, but gets the job done

Not sure where you get this idea? POP3 and IMAP would work just fine if it's enabled, and more importantly, is exposed to the internet. It's not as nice as push email and most companies would not bother to expose it to the internet, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. He may not have access to it on his server but there's no technical reason it can't be done. It's just a standard pop3 and imap server using the standard protocols.
I would like to thank everybody for all the help and I was able to fix the problem with some help from a OWA forum.
The problem I was having is that the username should have been the username alone and then the domain name was just uchastings. That was it.
I have one more question I am hoping someone can help me with.
I use Microsoft Outlook 2007 on my laptop also since I can just connect my school mail and Gmail on there.
When I first connected my ATT Tilt to my laptop, it asked me what I wanted to sync and I choose Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and Notes. Then I setup my Tilt with the school's outlook web access. It also asked what it should sync and I choose Contacts, Mail, Calendar, Tasks, and Notes.
Now on my Outlook 2007, when I choose Contacts, Calender, or Tasks, it gives me two options for each. For example in contacts, it has Contacts and Contacts from Personal Folder. Same for Calendar (Calender and Calendar from Personal Contacts) and Tasks.
Now my question is that are these two connected or is one from my Tilt and the other from Hastings OWA? If I choose to delete one, say from the OWA, will it affect the other? I am asking because all the items in each place (ie Calendar and Calendar from Personal Folder) are the same.
Thanks for the help once again.
Sorry if this has been addressed already, but I thought it relevant so I'm posting it here. I've always used just my GMail account with the native app and it's worked fine so I never really bothered with my Hotmail account since it's only POP mail and I feel that having it poll my Inbox every 15mins drains the battery heavily. But I read this morning that they've just started rolling out the new Windows Live Hotmail Wave 4 today, which includes Exchange ActiveSync support for Push email and Account syncing for Calendar and Contacts.
As it's being rolled out in clusters, my account hasn't been upgraded yet. But I decided to try to set up my account to Push anyways and it seems like it's working fine.
If you want to do the same in the Stock Email App, Add a New Account. Then input your Email Address and Password then hit the Manual Setup button and Select Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and use these settings:
Domain\Username: \username@hotmail.com
Password: password
Server: m.hotmail.com
Use Secure Connection (SSL): Yes
Accept all SSL Certificates: No
hit Next, then make sure the Email Check Frequency is set to Automatic (Push) and then just set your other sync options. (I've only synced mail since my contacts and calendar are synced with GMail).
I'm sure some things will change when my account actually gets the upgrade, but for now, it's basically all I need.
Full Disclosure: I'm on 2.2 and using the stock Email App for this. I don't know how this will impact 2.1 or if you're using K9 or Touchdown, etc. so feel free to post you results.
Just tried your settings with the 2.1 email app and it's no go.
Just tested...
...and it works! Running 2.2 (FRF50).
Even though I rarely use it and that it's mostly used for pretty useless mail it's still nice that it works, finally.

Using stock 2.1 update 1, it works except there's no calendar option(should only available in 2.2), but the server is not very stable, need a few more retry to connect
Must be why it failed then.
2.2 you can add with out having to change any settings.
Do you know the setting to use in any other apps? The stock mail app doesnt allow showing html pictures, so i'd prefer to use k-9 or touchdown...
THANKS!!

Worked for me on 2.1 email app. Now, how do I get a widget to show me the unread count?
Finally MS do something useful to their antiquated service!
Tried it, but doesn't work (yet)
Do you get an e-mail when your account is upgraded?
Guess that is cool if it works, but you can only have 1 Exchange Activesync account on any device...that includes iPhone, WinMo etc...
Has this stopped working for anyone? I'm just getting 'unable to connect to server' now.
Same here, getting the "Unable to open connection to server."-message now.
The wierd thing is that yesterday I got the little yellow bar up top in Hotmail telling me to restart the browser to try the new version (which is what actually got me to try this) but nothing really changed, rollback?

Technically true, but two Push accounts can be accomplished on both Android & WinMo(windows live + exchange)
For us with X10's who are stuck with version 1.6 of Android,
What are the settings to get this working in K9? Has anyone successfully got it working with that mail prog?
Thanks!
Still not working here. Go Microsoft

Yes, it's proper push.
I have a strange email issue on my WP8. I use Yaho Mail if that matters; the problem is that when a new email comes in it deletes the one before so I always only have one email in inbox..

Yeah, I've actually deleted it a few times now. I don't know what is up with Windows Phone where it won't remember my account password even though it is entered correctly; after a while it will say your attention is required and I have to delete it and add it back so it can work. I use to have this issue with Windows Phone 7 and thought that it would be addressed in 8. I'll have to check on the server side.
Okay I found out the issue but I don't get it. When I go to Yaho mail, all my email is in the Trash I moved everything back to the inbox and it shows up on the phone. However when I open my Outlook it sends all of my Yahoo mail to the trash but only online
Ok, I cant really test because Im not using that email. Do you have some settings on your server side that could affect this, also does your service provider offer alternative servers for downloading email?
You probably have the account setup as IMAP, you could use POP and set the settings so it does not delete emails after downloading etc?
