Hey guys, hope you can help.
Successfully updated my V1615 to WM6.1 on Friday.
Before I did this, I had TomTom installed which used to get a lock on to the satellites in less than 30 seconds.
I used the device with TomTom on Saturday and after an initial delay of locking on (which I assumed normal as it was a fresh install) it worked.
However trying to use it today and it just will not pick up a signal.
The ROM I used was the Vodafone one linked to from the Wiki list. (3.08.161.0) (Radio 1.64.08.21).
I have also tried Changing the Radio ROM to 1.65.17.10 but no difference.
It's set to Other NMEA device, 4800 baud and COM4 like it always was. I have run a QuickGPS download.
Strange thing is, when I go into the GPS config in TomTom I used have all the satellites listed in gray which would then turn blue when locked on but now they aren't listed at all.
Please help! I do have a bluetooth gps receiver from when I had my Hermes so I can get but part of the reason to get the Kaiser is so I have an all in one unit. I'm just in the middle of a hard reset to try again but does anyone have any thoughts on the matter? It's gone from being a brilliant GPS unit to a dodo!
Thanks!
Test if Google Maps finds some satelittes, just to check if there is a problem with TomTom
http://www.google.co.uk/mobile/gmm/stp-js.html
If that doesn't work, I'd reinstall the old ROM and see if the functionality returns and if it doesn't assume you have somehow broken the GPS.

wow you picked the wrong radio to change too. You should have read about it before changing to 1.65.17.10. You should do some research on what you did to yourself.

Maybe you should read the thread that redbandana is talking about... maybe the bit about it being locked to your phone and you can't downgrade it... not really a good choice 'cos he's now stuck with that radio and also maybe stuck with WM6.1 (which also sucks - WM6.0 faster and more stable imho).
I had to do a hard reset and reinstall apps. TomTom no longer works. LiveSearch does RunGPS does. Neither TomTom or GPSTest can find the GPS. Any suggestions? When you choose other NMEA device in TomTom options are Serial on USB and COM7: that's it.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Well, it works now! I used to be able to get a lock on indoors, but now I can't. However if I go outside I cado get a lock on in TomTom. It seems like the GPS is now less sensitive, but hey, it works aand that's the main thing.
I'll do a search later but does anyone have a link to the thread regarding this dodgy radio. I did try and downgrade it but as you say, it didn't. I have some more coming in this week anyway so I can give this to someone who doesn't need/want GPS and I'll have the shiny new one. Ah the joys of working in IT!
Oh, and thanks to IK for the Google Maps link, brilliant app! I'd seen it on the PC but not pocket PC.
FWIW, my Tomtom uses the "Internal GPS" setting, not "other NMEA device"

This is the link for the 'dodgy radio'. It looks like it is also an AT&T only radio.
Thanks ach2. Did a search and have spent all morning readin it!
I'm now having issues with the actual phone operation, intermitant no sound or buzzing.
I think I'm going to take a chance and return it to Vodafone. They do a next day swap under our corporate contract.
If there is any comeback I'll just plead ignorance!
Satrted to have the buzzing earpiece and broken camera issue with this radio, so it's gone back to Vodafone as faulty! Replacement is currently still on stock Vodafone WM6.0 ROM. To be honest I think I'll stick with 6.0, as 6.1 didn't really offer anything over it.
Roll on 7.0!!

If you're sticking to WM6.0 (i do too) try Q-mobile 1.2 with radio 1.27.12.17 or 1.27.12.32 - they both work well in the UK.

My friend, you need this (Vodafone WM 6.1 pre release) and use it with this Niki 1.58.11.07 Radio.
Been running this for a few days and basically I've changed my opinion on my V1615 from wanting to sell to now enjoying using it.
Highlights include 30 - 55 second GPS fix in TomTom, much much better speaker phone and better call quality.
Try these out and I'm sure you'll agree.
Thanks guys, maybe I'll try them over the weekend.
Actually, that Vodafone 6.1 ROM is the one I tried and to be honest I didn't see much difference between that and the stock 6.0 one.
As long as I'm outside I get a lock on in TomTom in about 15 seconds which is good enough for me. On my old one that I bricked I was sure I used to get a signal inside as well.
I'm just looking at the Wiki for the Q-mobile one.
Thanks again for the help, suggestions and info. This is what makes the internet great! Complete strangers helping each other out.

What's that? Is that the one where you press end call to end a call and sometimes it locks your touch screen? If so yes, but not very often.
Yeah something to do with when you set your device with a password and it goes into sleep mode during a call and then you wake it up and the start menu stops working.

How long are you waiting? Sometimes it takes 30 minutes for me to get a fix. But if I start one of those programs then drive home, I get a fix faster.

Yeah, wait for it to get a lock in the other test programs, before trying to use the full blown Nav softwares.
Yeah. My mistake it's V1.
The most I've waited is 10/15 minutes. But It's really not even worth it for me to do that since that nullifies the convenience of having a phone with GPS.
Plus, how can I be sure that my phone has a GPS lock?
satellites will turn green if you are using htc_gps_tool
In addition, you should download the latest updates with quickgps as well before running those tools. I usually have to download quickgps, open gps tool with the appropriate settings, open tomtom then close tomtom, download quickgps again, open gps tool with appropriate settings again, then open tomtom to get a fix less than 5 seconds on a cold start. I got it down to a T.

oh yeah forgot to tell you. If you are using gps tool do not hit the x button before you open your gps software because the program closes rather than minimizes, which defeats the purpose of using it to begin with.
I tried all those things.
I let GPS Tool run for about an hour and still never got a fix. Thanks for your help though.
If I go back to 6.0 would it work again?
let it run for a few minutes then open your gps software without closing gps tool. I don't think I can get a fix either without gps software being open.

Bear in mind, GPS is an acronym for "Global positioning satellite" Key word there being SATELLITE, are you even going out side to try to get a signal? See, if you're in a big building, full of lead paint, there's no way to get a signal through that, try doing it again outside, in an open field, on a sunny day, and see if you have a different result.

Yeah. I'm not stupid. I know how it works.
If I can't get a fix sitting in my car then there's really no point. I only use it for driving directions.
This may end making me switch to iPhone 3G because I'm getting sick of HTC. I love the customization but I just need a phone that works. I pay too much money for this. This is getting ridiculous.

I really don't understand why you cannot get a fix using 6.1 roms. I offered all the advice I could give you. You said you use google maps, correct? If I open google maps on my device without gps being on It can still read my current position. This is just extremely odd...

Why are you blaming HTC for this? You're not running an HTC ROM or even an AT&T ROM, you're running a ROM cooked up by somebody else and then blaming the manufacturer of the hardware for it. There are lot's of people with fully functional GPS on the Tilt.
You can go to the iPhone if you want, but keep in mind that there aren't any programs yet for the iPhone that give you turn by turn directions. You might have to wait a while for that brand spankin new iPhone to be able to use its GPS.

I have a TILT - You can see the ROM I am running in my signature line. I get a fix in less than a minute and use the TOMTOM ALL the time.
The ONLY problem I have on this ROM is that I have to push the power button twice to get the screen to come on. Other than that - EVERYTHING else works a treat.
Get the iphone if you want - but there are MANY things that it cannot do that you may miss.

What redio version are you using?
I've been running Dutty's Diamond V1 for about a week now and the GPS works for me. Depending on the radio your using it may take several minutes to get a GPS fix, but it does work for me and others.
I just flashed Radio 1.65.24.36 ( found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=398177 ) and it takes several minutes to get a fix the first time after a soft reset, but after that it get a fix very fast.

Did HTC or XDA devs publish a spec sheet? Did anyone ask this question before? Did Google develop the art of searching?
There's a LOT on this and if you only look at the specs, you'll know. In short, it does have GPS and it is usable without an external one.

seriously...I means SERIOUSLY???? Have you ever looked at the back of your Tilt where it says GPS?? or did you never read specs on the tilt or are you unable to understand english??

Durrr.....why am I hungry? It doesnt say anywhere on my body that its hungry.
Yes, the ATT Tilt has GPS
It does have a built-in GPS. This same issue threw me off at first too, until I figured it out..
You flamers shouldn't flame the OP. Actual Kaiser and TyTnII owners may already know about the GPS, but the ONLY part of the "AT&T Tilt" documentation referring to GPS is the brief mention of being able to get TeleNav. I know this because I have one. The specs/box mention that it has GPS, but that's all.
Now if I remember correctly, the GPS is COM3 or COM4 by default (unless you changed it in Start->Settings->System->External GPS). I changed mine to COM0 just for the hell of it, and it functions normally.
TomTom should work just fine, set it to 4800 baud, and try it with each COM port available in the options. It sometimes takes a few minutes for TomTom to display that the GPS is in "connected, but no valid signal yet" mode.
If you want to be able to use your Tilt's GPS as an external for some other device, the best thing I've found is GPSGate, but any COM-port splitter should work (as long as it presents a new Bluetooth and/or Serial service)
GPSGate is also useful since you can tell it to log your GPS data to any URL, à la those logging/who-stole-my-phone programs. It can also multiplex the GPS port for use by multiple programs (but I think that functionality is also built into WM and is called the "GPS Intermediate Driver", but I may be mistaken)
Hope this helps!

GPS stopped working for my ATT TILT
my GPS was working fine. my tomtom was working fine, googlemaps was working fine. then all of a sudden a few weeks ago it just stopped working! usually i would use GPS test to get a working signal and then I would run tomtom and it would work. a few months ago it started to take a much longer time to acquire a valid gps signal (it would take a few to 5 minutes). but now it just doesnt find one at all! is there anything i could do to try to fix this? what com port should it be on? im thinking i mightve changed one of the settings unknowingly. please help!
hello all!
i really hate to post a thread on something thats probably already been solved with an easy answer but after 2 hours searching/head scratching and various tools/program downloads i cannot for the life of me get my kaiser's built in gps to work.
on the phone:
T-mobile (uk) MDA Vario 3
R: 1.27.12.32
(edit: i now know this to be an older german/russian version, any advice on a newer version appreciated)
G: 22.45.88.07
D: 1.56.00.00
ive tried setting to com4 with various baud rates (weirdly it hung when i tried it with 4800 and had to soft-reset so didnt work!) ive installed vaious programs (GPStest/GPS info/ GPS Gate etc etc) with all programs including tom tom 7 saying that theres no GPS device!
im pulling my hair out!
im guessing i'll need to update the firmware but hopefully not!
im on my knees for help!

The best way how to start gps is:
start quickgps and download the data, then if u have installed gps test, start it and wait for it to find the satelites. Dont change the options. Try to be outside and not in house or building.
no
the GPS is not being found, it is either disabled by the rom/radio or is Fubar!
simply downloading location data isnt going to get it to work!
unplug your computer, walk off into the distance, put it on the floor and tell it where it is.
does it turn on and boot to windows?
me thinks not.

Another option - try to disable the assisted gps, for that u need to install schaps advanced config - that is a very helpful application.
There can be also one possibility that your gps is faulty.

Go to settings/system/external gps and tell me what settings(in the 3tabs-programs,hardware,access) u have set there.
Have you seen this Configuring Tomtom 6 thread linked to from the Wiki yet? If you've tried all of that and still it doesn't work, if it was me I'd hard reset and make Tomtom Navigator the only program I next installed then I'd test it again without making any configuration changes to it (at least the version I use, I don't know if other versions require any fiddling about to get them to work but TTN 6.032, Google Maps and Microsoft Live Search have all been just a case of once it's installed do a soft reset (not even sure this essential but I do it anyway) and then when I start them up, they work fine). Be very patient and give it ages out in the open to find satellites the first time after a fresh install/hard reset.
No GPS after official update
Hi,
I've got very similar problem : i've upgraded my Kaiser with a official rom/radio from Orange FR (wm 6.1, rom 3.31.73.0 FRE, radio 1.65.16.25).
Since this upgrade, my Kaiser cannot find the inboard GPS. I tried using Google maps, ViaMichelin, OrangeNavigation, and many GPS tools... none of them was able to find the GPS !
That sucks.
I called Orange 2 days ago, and i'm waiting for a response. I'll post there if any news.

yes please mathieu, would be good to hear what they suggest!
Hey everyone.
just wondering if someone could post a QuickGPS cab for me. I went to use tomtom today and for whatever reason quickgps was no longer installed in my phone. The only thing I have done on it since I last used it was installed Pointui 2. So I dont know how or why it dissapeared.
I've searched for the past hour for a cab but all I can find is GPStest... which isnt what I need.
Thanks in advance!

I found the exe in the windows directory..the shortcut disappeared for some reason so I just made a new one.
Hi Aaron.. could please tell me what quick gps does? Cause the only option i get on my phone is 'download'.. After i download the data.. what next??

Basically QuickGPS helps yougeta fix quicker when running one of your gps programs. Ie: Tomtom, Google maps, Garmin, Navigon, etc etc.
Without this program people, including myself, have had radiculous wait times to get locks on the satelites. Up to 20 minutes at times. When I run this program first then launch tomtom I get a lock within 10-30 seconds.
Hope this helps explain some of what it does. I don't know the technical aspects of what it does just.... what it does haha
theres a cab posted in the "ask questions here" sticky thread for anyone else lookin.

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but I see a lot of misinformation about this all over the place.
The first post in this thread gives a good explanation.
http://www.htcwiki.com/thread/939263/How+Quick+GPS+Works?t=anon
There's a reason there's an expiration date of a week for the ephemeris data: it doesn't change all that quickly. If you're truly finding that you have to download this info every time to get a reasonable TTFF the phone must be dumping this file (which doesn't make any sense, and is probably not the case unless you see in QuickGPS that it doesn't have a countdown from your last DL). The real reason TTFF is so poor on these phones is poor reciever management. Newer radios are far better, and don't require all this "run QuickGPS, run GPSTest" every time nonsense (which I think are placebo effects anyways). Once you've got reasonably recent ephemeris data the only thing that can improve TTFF is the phone knowing where it is, which it determines in one of two ways: A-GPS (where it triangulates a rough position from cell towers) or from last known position. If neither of those things is reasonably close to your real position it will take a long time to get that first fix.
