How Can I get GPS to work on my Tilt??? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Ever since I flashed Dutty's diamond v9 GPS has been useless.
I've tried HTC GPS Tool and GPS test.....but they're not helping me.
GPS won't work in either google maps or Live Search.

How long are you waiting? Sometimes it takes 30 minutes for me to get a fix. But if I start one of those programs then drive home, I get a fix faster.

Yeah, wait for it to get a lock in the other test programs, before trying to use the full blown Nav softwares.

Yeah. My mistake it's V1.
The most I've waited is 10/15 minutes. But It's really not even worth it for me to do that since that nullifies the convenience of having a phone with GPS.
Plus, how can I be sure that my phone has a GPS lock?

satellites will turn green if you are using htc_gps_tool
In addition, you should download the latest updates with quickgps as well before running those tools. I usually have to download quickgps, open gps tool with the appropriate settings, open tomtom then close tomtom, download quickgps again, open gps tool with appropriate settings again, then open tomtom to get a fix less than 5 seconds on a cold start. I got it down to a T.

no idea but I always start mine with com4 baud 4800 hot start

oh yeah forgot to tell you. If you are using gps tool do not hit the x button before you open your gps software because the program closes rather than minimizes, which defeats the purpose of using it to begin with.

I tried all those things.
I let GPS Tool run for about an hour and still never got a fix. Thanks for your help though.
If I go back to 6.0 would it work again?

let it run for a few minutes then open your gps software without closing gps tool. I don't think I can get a fix either without gps software being open.

Bear in mind, GPS is an acronym for "Global positioning satellite" Key word there being SATELLITE, are you even going out side to try to get a signal? See, if you're in a big building, full of lead paint, there's no way to get a signal through that, try doing it again outside, in an open field, on a sunny day, and see if you have a different result.

Yeah. I'm not stupid. I know how it works.
If I can't get a fix sitting in my car then there's really no point. I only use it for driving directions.
This may end making me switch to iPhone 3G because I'm getting sick of HTC. I love the customization but I just need a phone that works. I pay too much money for this. This is getting ridiculous.

I really don't understand why you cannot get a fix using 6.1 roms. I offered all the advice I could give you. You said you use google maps, correct? If I open google maps on my device without gps being on It can still read my current position. This is just extremely odd...

Why are you blaming HTC for this? You're not running an HTC ROM or even an AT&T ROM, you're running a ROM cooked up by somebody else and then blaming the manufacturer of the hardware for it. There are lot's of people with fully functional GPS on the Tilt.
You can go to the iPhone if you want, but keep in mind that there aren't any programs yet for the iPhone that give you turn by turn directions. You might have to wait a while for that brand spankin new iPhone to be able to use its GPS.

I have a TILT - You can see the ROM I am running in my signature line. I get a fix in less than a minute and use the TOMTOM ALL the time.
The ONLY problem I have on this ROM is that I have to push the power button twice to get the screen to come on. Other than that - EVERYTHING else works a treat.
Get the iphone if you want - but there are MANY things that it cannot do that you may miss.

What redio version are you using?
I've been running Dutty's Diamond V1 for about a week now and the GPS works for me. Depending on the radio your using it may take several minutes to get a GPS fix, but it does work for me and others.
I just flashed Radio 1.65.24.36 ( found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=398177 ) and it takes several minutes to get a fix the first time after a soft reset, but after that it get a fix very fast.
Good luck... Let us know how it works our for you.

How long does it take you to "seek GPS satelites" ?

Mine can take anywhere from 10 seconds to 10+ minutes.. in the same area (where I know i can get 6+ satelites). =/
wow
it is a custom rom? use quickGPS, run then hit the download button then use which ever GPS software you want to use. it helps a lot.
Yeah mine takes forever the first time it seems like but once I've found satelites it doesn't take as long that day or the next.
ah that might be it.. because i know I had quickGPS download stuff for me previously... and now it didnt.. so ill download the file and see how it goes.. thx for ur help
Will quick gps need to be working at the background or could I just close it after I download and start my gps program? Thanks
Just use QuickGPS, hit download and you can quit QuickGPS.
Between 10 and 120 seconds, usually, even when updated with QuickGPS.
Mine usually takes about 30 seconds to get its fix.
Note: I always keep QuickGPS up-to-date
5/15 secs.
Depends on radio rom probably also. Last time I poked at it, 1.27.15.32 was the slowest.
my gps takes almost forever to get a sat fix. and my quickgps would always give me a cannot download message everytime i try to download... anyone know the issue?
I have my QuickGPS set to auto download when it needs to, so as long as I'm not in a building with a steel roof I can usually get a GPS lock in under 10 seconds.

Apparently mine too =(
I have just started playing with Destinator 7 last night. I was indoors and was not able to get signal in a 10 minute period before quitting the program (it was also cloudy out side too).
I Used to have Earthcomber. That took about 3 minutes indoors but I Finally got my GPS Icon Green. Never tried it outside, cause There are no maps of mexico with Earthcomber yet.
Do some programs get manage the reception better than others? Or is it pretty much equal?
Just using TomTom i can get a fix in about 20 secs. I don't even have to run Quick GPS.

Try google maps. When you open Google Maps click on the menu. There is an option called "Use GPS". Select that line and it will use the GPS antenna to locate you.

Thanks for the tip, google maps was one of the first map softwares I installed and I really enjoyed it.
Actually I take back what I said on my last post. I didn't realize how much impact on GPS reception is caused by being indoors (which was where I played a little with Destinator right after installing it earlier today).
When I had to go to class, just for kicks, I got the directions for my house to my university routed, and I got 8 sat reception on a cloudy rainy day in 15 maybe 20 seconds. The precision and drections are outstanding. I hear Destinator is bad, I did not find it bad at all. I also purchased Igo, which I will try tomorrow. I had so much fun with my first real GPS experience XD.
i run quick GPS then i run GPStool to get a good signal...then i run googlemaps and get a signal in 5secs.
Is this a tool i must download or is this build in tomtom?

NEVERMIND I FOUND IT!!!!!!

Another broken GPS.

Hey guys, hope you can help.
Successfully updated my V1615 to WM6.1 on Friday.
Before I did this, I had TomTom installed which used to get a lock on to the satellites in less than 30 seconds.
I used the device with TomTom on Saturday and after an initial delay of locking on (which I assumed normal as it was a fresh install) it worked.
However trying to use it today and it just will not pick up a signal.
The ROM I used was the Vodafone one linked to from the Wiki list. (3.08.161.0) (Radio 1.64.08.21).
I have also tried Changing the Radio ROM to 1.65.17.10 but no difference.
It's set to Other NMEA device, 4800 baud and COM4 like it always was. I have run a QuickGPS download.
Strange thing is, when I go into the GPS config in TomTom I used have all the satellites listed in gray which would then turn blue when locked on but now they aren't listed at all.
Please help! I do have a bluetooth gps receiver from when I had my Hermes so I can get but part of the reason to get the Kaiser is so I have an all in one unit. I'm just in the middle of a hard reset to try again but does anyone have any thoughts on the matter? It's gone from being a brilliant GPS unit to a dodo!
Thanks!
Test if Google Maps finds some satelittes, just to check if there is a problem with TomTom
http://www.google.co.uk/mobile/gmm/stp-js.html
If that doesn't work, I'd reinstall the old ROM and see if the functionality returns and if it doesn't assume you have somehow broken the GPS.

Maybe you should read the thread that redbandana is talking about... maybe the bit about it being locked to your phone and you can't downgrade it... not really a good choice 'cos he's now stuck with that radio and also maybe stuck with WM6.1 (which also sucks - WM6.0 faster and more stable imho).
I had to do a hard reset and reinstall apps. TomTom no longer works. LiveSearch does RunGPS does. Neither TomTom or GPSTest can find the GPS. Any suggestions? When you choose other NMEA device in TomTom options are Serial on USB and COM7: that's it.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Well, it works now! I used to be able to get a lock on indoors, but now I can't. However if I go outside I cado get a lock on in TomTom. It seems like the GPS is now less sensitive, but hey, it works aand that's the main thing.
I'll do a search later but does anyone have a link to the thread regarding this dodgy radio. I did try and downgrade it but as you say, it didn't. I have some more coming in this week anyway so I can give this to someone who doesn't need/want GPS and I'll have the shiny new one. Ah the joys of working in IT!
Oh, and thanks to IK for the Google Maps link, brilliant app! I'd seen it on the PC but not pocket PC.
FWIW, my Tomtom uses the "Internal GPS" setting, not "other NMEA device"

This is the link for the 'dodgy radio'. It looks like it is also an AT&T only radio.
Thanks ach2. Did a search and have spent all morning readin it!
I'm now having issues with the actual phone operation, intermitant no sound or buzzing.
I think I'm going to take a chance and return it to Vodafone. They do a next day swap under our corporate contract.
If there is any comeback I'll just plead ignorance!
Satrted to have the buzzing earpiece and broken camera issue with this radio, so it's gone back to Vodafone as faulty! Replacement is currently still on stock Vodafone WM6.0 ROM. To be honest I think I'll stick with 6.0, as 6.1 didn't really offer anything over it.
Roll on 7.0!!

My friend, you need this (Vodafone WM 6.1 pre release) and use it with this Niki 1.58.11.07 Radio.
Been running this for a few days and basically I've changed my opinion on my V1615 from wanting to sell to now enjoying using it.
Highlights include 30 - 55 second GPS fix in TomTom, much much better speaker phone and better call quality.
Try these out and I'm sure you'll agree.
Thanks guys, maybe I'll try them over the weekend.
Actually, that Vodafone 6.1 ROM is the one I tried and to be honest I didn't see much difference between that and the stock 6.0 one.
As long as I'm outside I get a lock on in TomTom in about 15 seconds which is good enough for me. On my old one that I bricked I was sure I used to get a signal inside as well.
I'm just looking at the Wiki for the Q-mobile one.
Thanks again for the help, suggestions and info. This is what makes the internet great! Complete strangers helping each other out.

What's that? Is that the one where you press end call to end a call and sometimes it locks your touch screen? If so yes, but not very often.
Yeah something to do with when you set your device with a password and it goes into sleep mode during a call and then you wake it up and the start menu stops working.

WM6.1 f*cked up my GPS

Hi,
I've updated my kaiser with the original wm6.1 update from htc.
Since then it takes forever to get a fix. Once i have one the signal is as strong as before.
It takes over 10 min to get a fix if i even get one at all...
I use TomTom v6 (032.8351) as navigator using the build-in receiver option.
QuickGPS is always up-to-date so that's not the problem.
Is there a way to test the gps hardware and/or settings?

Same here, does the GPS really use the QuickGPS update? It seems it uses really old definitions or something. Does a custom baked ROM, like a Dutty rom, fix this prob?

gpstest is a freeware, u can get it in P1Taters "storage", he has got it in his signature(its in cabs/a must for me).
Or try to google it.
AGPS is quite different, it's disabled by default in most ROMs including the new 6.1 update, no surprise there.
QuickGPS is separate and should be working, and indeed appears to be working just fine, but for whatever reason the data is collects just isn't being used by the GPS in 6.1 ROMs. This has been discussed here at length (search for "hopeless GPS") and there's no solution in sight. Some claim not to have the problem, for others it's all too obvious. We can all get quick fixes from time to time, but the consistent reliability from the old 6.0 ROMs is completely gone in 6.1.
Every registry tweak, "GPS test" and radio change suggested here has proven to be a placebo so far - I'm just waiting (forever, probably) for a patch from HTC.
The same problem is also mentioned in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=397728 I hope that someone will find a solution...
Sorry guys, but after sofreset I get first fix after 1-2 minutes and after that when I launch iGO I get a fix after some seconds(10-20).

For you maybe. Mine seems to work flawless. Every time I try, it works.
BTW, AGPS is not always disabled. Yes it is different but it might be interfering with the GPS software. It did in one of Dutty's roms i beta tested for him.

Congratulations?
I can sometimes get first fix after 1-2 minutes, the problem is that other times (seemingly at random) it can be 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes. Without properly functioning QuickGPS, it's basically luck of the draw.
Once you've had a lock, the data is retained for some hours (unless you reset) so subsequent fixes will usually be fairly instanteneous, even for me. None of this really helps.
Like I said before, some people claim not to have the problem, some of them may even be right, but unfortunately for others the problem definitely exists, and nobody's put their finger on the cause.

Keyword is "placebo". Running a different GPS app before the actual GPS app you want to use doesn't actually speed anything up, it just makes it seem like you're "doing something". All software like GPS Test does is open a port to your GPS and try to get a fix - do you think TomTom doesn't do that already?

So, those that don't have the issue are liars? Good luck figuring it out. I don't feel like having this argument on whether or not mine is working. Childish in my opinion, so I'll just move on. Yes of course, they're damned dirty liars, all of them.
Or they've misunderstood the problem.
Or they've just tried their GPS for the first time in weeks and gotten a reasonably quick fix, just like any of us (myself included) could have done on any random occasion (consistency is the key in this).
Or they're running a completely different ROM/Radio and haven't really been paying attention (that wouldn't be you would it?)
Point is, I'd strongly encourage anyone genuinely experiencing this problem not to bother even reading this thread, just get onto HTC for a fix. All the potions and pills being suggested here are a waste of time; they've all been tried, and they don't work.

Bully for you. I believe it's quite ignorant (not to mention bloody irritating) to come onto a thread about a problem you've obviously not experienced, and try to suggest that problem doesn't exist, or that we won't have already tried all the most blindingly obvious fixes for it. But ce la vie.

Yup, that's me. I ignored all issues reported and used a different rom/radio combination to try and fix the issue. Oops. BTW, I never once stated the problem did not exist, as I know it does for some. You stated those that say they are not experiencing the problem are mistaken.
All I can say is that my combination is working for me. I use GPS at least 3 times a week and I always get a fix in under 20 sec. Dutty's June 8 rom and radio 1.58.25.17. Yes, this rom does have issues, but the issue's that it does have do not pertain to me as I dont use the apps that the issues involve.
OMG, this thread is going in the other direction that was supposed.
U try to help him and u get a slap in the face instead of simple THANK YOU.
Nice attitude man.
I know, jeez, isn't it? Crikey. Just goes to show. Who'd have thought it.
Anyway, if you've updated your HTC Tytn II to the new WM 6.1 update, and have been experiencing erratic GPS performance ever since, please do contact HTC Support at their website (www.htc.com) and register a bug report there. That's the only way we're all going to get a fix. Thanks!

You get a fix in less than 20 seconds after a cold start of Gps? This is exactly the problem i'm dealing with WM6.1 roms. I can't get a fix in less than 2 minutes (cold start) and i have tried many 6.1 roms and many radios. In WM6 roms i get a fix in less than 20 seconds. Can you please tell me which rom do you have installed in your Kaiser? Thank you
Edit: Please give me a link for this rom you are using. Thank you
Thanks for the tips.
I'll try the tools, see if that dous anything good, otherwise i'll send a verry irritated e-mail to htc.
Btw, has anyone tried other navigation software like iGo, MioMap or Destinator?
Same problems?
And if there is no way to fix it for now, is it possible to downgrade to the original WM6?
A hard reset won't bring it back to WM6 i gues?

Diamond Gps Sucks

I am so annoyed with HTC Diamonds GPS. It just sucks and doesn't work. I had earlier updated the radio to 1.25.06 and then it didn't work. Other members over here advised to switch to 1.25.05 and yet it doesn't work. I did a hard reset too but no luck.
Map King fails to work and Google Maps keeps on saying trying to seek Satellites and yet it just shows 0.
I am truly disgusted with HTC and will never again buy their products
Funny, I have a Diamond too, and my GPS works perfectly. Actually it's the best GPS I've ever seen. Flash 1.93 ROM, then use QuickGPS to download actual GPS positions and try again.
By the way, you're not trying to run GPS inside the buildings are you? Go out into the street and try there. GPS doesn't work inside.

Kid:
Have you set manual settings in google maps?
This way:
COM4
and 4800.
Luck!
I had a flat tyre on my Mercedes the other day! I am so annoyed with Mercedes!
I will never buy Mercedes again!!
you need out your battery from your phone and put it back after one minute.
GPS works perfect on my Diamond. Much better than some car GPS devices i've seen. Dunno why yours doesnt work. Maybe you are a noob?
Doesnt work inside buildings btw..
Mine also working fine with MapKing2007 and HTC GPS Tool....
BTW I'm setting it at 57600.... is this fine? or actually does this setting matter?
I am currently running Swift Rom v5 and yes i am trying the Gps outside. Regarding the settings in Google Maps, i have kept it to automatic. QuickGps is also updated.
I will try the battery thing and will set it to manual
Thx to everyone for their input,
As the "I will never buy a HTC again" threads are coming up in decent sequence, I would dare to see a system behind it if I would be a bad mood. Backdoor marketing at a glance?
My TD GPS is the best I ever had. Sat fix with a loox N560 and Navigon MB6 - 2 minutes waiting. Same with my TD: 10 seconds waiting.
nextavenger, sometimes the prob is not in your hand resp. on the table but between the ears or behind your eyes? Just a guess though ...

I have no problem with the phone. I own two iphones too. I am enjoying my Diamond more than these iphones. When i had picked this phone, i had never intended for Gps feature but moving to a new city all together, i figured the gps can actually help me.
I went through all the previous threads complaning about the Gps lag and gps problems before starting this thread. Its not only me who is facing a problem. I did a complete research before starting a new thread. I bought maps specially for this and if the device doesn't work out of the box, its kinda sad.
it is not diamond's problem, gps is great in there !
When I bought my TD the GPS worked perfectly. Then i start flashing various roms and radios, and began experience various problems. Hard to get fix, losing signal and a huge lag.
Finally i flashed the new official rom 1.93 with radio 05 and all my problems disappear. Now it works great. It takes only seconds to get fix and the signal is rock steady, and the lag is no worse than other gps units i have before.
Try Duttys newest rom, he has integrated the radio and rom in his download. He thinks that flashing radio and rom at the same time may cure the gps problem, and i think he is right.
I flashed dutty's latest rom,did a hard reset and my gps gets a fix in a matter of seconds.

for everyone who has gps problem, follow these steps and reset gps data:
1) remove battery for five minutes
2) install gpstest 1.04 and set it to com4 at 4800 baud
3) wait for a fix in an open space (about 3-4 min.)
4) exit the program and start tomtom (set it on integrated gps) or other navigation software and here you go!!!
These steps help everyone who has gps problem after installing, removing navigation softwares and works with every gps.
I hope this will help you. Bye.

Is it working yet ?
ok so i did this thing:
Flashed my phone using Swift's recent rom i.e v5.5
Hard Reset
Setup my phone
removed the battery for 10 mins
installed GpsTest
Loaded Google Maps
and voilla! its now working. Gps is locking fast too.
this is the best gps a ever had (except the SIRF in the XTEN until it quit on me)
from day 1 my gps worked fine with the usual lag. changed radio and flashed a custom ROM (see my signature) and no more lag.
i can guess looking at all the gps threads (i think there are more threads on this subject than threads on new ROMs) that there is a problem. i just don't understand why so many ppl has it and so many don't
btw, i am using iGO8.
Never had a problem neither with my Diamond. On the 1.37 ROM with .03 radio it took my GPS between 15 - 30 seconds to get a fix after a cold start. Which I think is already quite fast. Now on the 1.93 + .05 on a cold start I'm able to have a fix in 5 seconds more or less. I'm really amazed! I loved my Diamond already, now I love it even more

Pity you can't retract the heading of your thread....
My GPS works great also. No lag, fast locks.
You might want to download "htc gps tool". In that one you can do a warm reset on the gps, and that sometimes solves a gps problem.
Just dont run "clear storage" option in the program as you then have to restart, download quick gps settings, and restart again.
Greetings.

GPS Question

I know this has been asked before but im getting frustrated i cant get it to work >.<
I bought the tytn II for the gps mainly and for mine not to work its just annoying,
Ive tried all sorts of different roms and radios combined and all end up with the same result.
My GPS does not lock at all no matter if i leave it over night with the power plugged in, when the using gps test program it doesnt lock it always says "GPS Starting UP" the lights near the speaker flash from green and then to the orange and red on either side. So the gps is turning on but it will never lock.
Has anyone got anything, anything at all i can try? Or will i have to wait for HTC to make a fix for it?
If you can help me id be extremly happy =D
Many Thanks,
Kyon
Might want to try "GPS Tuner:" http://www.gpstuner.com/download/index.html. It shows the number of satellites received and strength. COM 4 is also the magic number to set for the phone's GPS to operate.
I usually activate it whenever I think a satellite mapping program like Garmin XT or Google Earth isn't working only to find I got weak signals or too few.
Mack
Awsome ill give it a try and then see what happens and report back =]
Thanks tho,
Hmm i tried the gps tuner and got nothing,
It said fix invailid and never picked up any sats or nothing im starting to wonder if my gps in the phone is busted, >.<
Shame if it is i have no idea how to tell if it is broken or not and if its replaceable or repairable v.v
If anyone has any other ideas to try lol =]
Many Thanks,
All sorts but not the right sort

Then unless you're in a lead lined room with no windows and in a place on the planet with little GPS coverage, you've not tried the combination in my sig.
You mentioned that you left the GPS on overnigth plugged in??? Any chance you are forgetting it has to be outside with a clear view of the sky to work in most situations? I have found if I accidently turn it on and it cant; find any satilietes in my plac,e then I try to use it outside it takes FOREVER to lock in.... How long are you waiting while outside somewhere with a clear view of hte sky (not inbetween soem buildings or anything like that)

Hmm i could try your combination lol could you give me links to the rom and radio please =]
"So the gps is turning on but it will never lock."
sorry, what u mean "never lock"? ...I try Google Earth mobile ... some time can see detected 6 satellites sometime 2 ... the figure keep up & down .... is that mean "never lock"??
Most likely your Kaiser is defective.
To tsfatt: Him saying the GPS never locks means that if he did what you say the figure would always stay 0.
yeah looks that way, i bought it second hand and i think it may of been dropped and damaged before i bought it
When using GPS test the sateillites show up sometimes they dont have any signal but they show up for a couple seconds then dissapear >.< so i dont know where i stand.
Think ill just buy a brand new one and see where that takes me lol but i wont give up just yet may opent he phone up and see for a lose connection.
Thanks,
P.s Keep the ideas coming guys =] more the merrier X3

The Radio is built into the RUU (ROM upgrade package) so if you already have a Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM on the device, all you'd need to do is flash hardSPL 1.0 onto the device and then run the official HTC RUU which is avail at the HTC Kaiser ROM section of XDAs wiki near the bottom of the page. If you later want the HTC original SPL 1.93, pm me as I got mine from one of the mods here.

I suggest that loading the basic GPS software (such as TomTom 6.032 or Google Maps) and testing it is the first thing you do after the post ROM flash hard reset. That way you can be sure that nothing else is interfering with the GPS functionality. If it still doesn't work then as already mentioned there's probably a hardware issue. If you have a compatible HTC GPS antenna, plugging that into the socket near the camera cover, while not necessary, may help. Let us know what happens.
