Mobile content creators who bought the developer version of the G1 to test out applications won't have access to all the apps in the Android Market, as Google has cut off access to paid apps.
The Android Dev Phone 1 is very similar to the T-Mobile G1, but it has a different design, and it's SIM-unlocked and hardware-unlocked. The $400 smartphone is aimed at developers who want an easy way to test applications on a physical device without having to sign up for a wireless service contract.

Full Story Here
I have a Developer phone (Free from Google as holiday bonus) and using the JF build I can see some Paid Apps. I can't see them all though....its kind of weird
Not only is the story inaccurate (its PROTECTED apps) it's been posted many times already.
The other threads have been talking about root phones, the article clearly states dev phones, not rooted. It also states paid apps (all of which are protected).
There are also protected free apps so pricing isn't the issue. All dev phones have root which is the main reason why adp's are blocked to begin with.
This has been discussed many times. Here is how it works:
1. Not all paid apps are protected. ADP firmware can only see NON-protected paid apps. This is because 'copy protection' is simply a folder that a normal user does not have permissions to enter. Thus, since all ADP1.1 phones have root, they can easily enter and copy the apps to simcard. Basically, they screwed that up pretty well, and really did not think it through all too well.
2. ADP users do not yet have an official ADP1.1 firmware update anyways, so they can not see paid apps anyways on the current image (old market)
3. Google is not blocking rooted phones (as rooted RC33 users can see all apps), they are only blocking the ADP1.1 users (IE ADP1.1 Holiday, which was meant as an update for internal google employees with the phone, not devs).
So there it is, not hard AT all. It does suck though, and if you really think about it, google is basically calling all of its employees thieves
I do think that this is probably the reason why there is no 'official' ADP1.1 dev phone images yet, even with the 1.1 SDK out. Google basically noted that their 'copy protection' is BS, and trying to fix that before the ADP1.1 official images are released, thus allowing devs access to all paid apps.
I'm rooted on RC33 and can't see all the apps :/

Google blocks non-T-mobile IP addresses from downloading premium apps so just make sure you're connected to 3G/Edge and it should download.

Did you move your apps to sd ? This could also be a problem when installing certain apps.

Just where did you get this bit of information? I have update several times my paid protected apps (such as SanpPhoto Pro) over my wifi. Without a hitch. I believe a lot of people are just jumping to ridiculous conclusions, like Google is blocking paid apps to root users, or updates are blocked to root users, or you can't download over wifi, etc. I believe most of these issues are due to the heavy load being placed on the Market Servers during and after the large update that allowed for paid apps. Also something to think about is the fact that the two users in this thread with issues have a similar situation...
The OP bought these apps and then got a replacement phone, perhaps there is something that is keeping it from working on a second device (would make sense, all the paid cell phone apps I used in the past were tied to IMEI numbers).
The last person to post an issue stated they bought the app, then wiped and "rooted" their phone. However, they did not state if they were getting the "Download Unsuccessful" message, so it is not entirely clear if the issue is the same. This could be a similar situation, or it could be indicative of another method of identifying the original installation phone.
I think they may be very closely tied together because there are other things stored on the phone when an app is purchased. There is a zip file in the /data/app directory (which may need to be present for updates to take place, not sure) there is the app in /data/app-private (obviously), but there is also information stored in the /data/dalvik-cache (which may hold the key to these issues - just a guess), and there may be something else I am overlooking.
It is entirely possible that there is data stored on the phone when an app is purchased to help identify the hardware to the market place. I know purchases are supposed to be tied to your Google account, but do not know if the TOS of the Market allow for the use of purchased apps on more than one device. If they do not, there is probably some kind of protection involved.
Just some things to toss about in your heads, may not be anything to what I am saying... But... I could be onto something. Seeing how I am a JFRC33 "root" user, who downloads and update paid apps via my home wifi connection, without any issues. Yeah the first few days or week that paid apps went live there were some issues downloading the updates, but those were felt across the board, and do not exist anymore. Meaning they must have been general issues with the Market, not certain phones/software.
It's apparent some carriers are not supporting the Android Market.
For those that don't have access to the Market and want access to apps, have you tried getting SAM (app store) client for your G1 from SlideME.org?
http:/slideme.org/sam2.apk
Anyone in the world can use SAM to safely buy and download with no limitations and without entering any sensitive info such as credit card details from your phone.
The only thing is that you will not see as many apps as you would on the Market, but with users help & input one day developers will realize that stocking Android Market alone does not do any good for marketing their apps to the international communities. Not to mention that the rest of the world will be hesitant to provide even their shopping habits to google.
So, you could look for apps on SlideME or Cyrket that has all the apps on Market and contact the developer and ask them to get their act together to stock other stores such as SlideME.org for this exact reason. Not everyone has access to the Android Market!!!
Follow apps from http://twitter.com/slideme if you like.
Here is an earlier announcement from SlideME team: http://www.prweb.com/releases/android/slideme/prweb2035414.htm
I am in India. and i was missing buying the apps..but not anymore..There aren't as many apps as on the market but then its just the begining...
thank you.
do we get automatic upgrades etc from you like the market provides- i looked at using slideme but wasnt sure how you would get the free upgrades for apps u have already paid for...i am in australia.
I haven't heard promising things about SlideMe's DRM solution, which appears to constantly contact the Slideme store when normal apps downloaded from Slideme are running, and not just the SlideMe market.
It looks good, and will probably be accepting Paypal. Nice alternative!
So what are developers to do? Well, recently I bashed on the SlideLOCK in a previous post… Though - the more I looked at it, this seems like the best option for developers to protect their applications. Though, hopefully google will remedy this solution and fast. Until then though, strike-one google market.

The last time I used Slideme it never showed updated or new apps so I had no idea when to look. Has this since been changed?
yeah- i want to know as well if you get automatic updates for each program bought?
We do updates for any downloaded apps. Maybe you have tried an old version of SAM.
thats the problem, why i cant see paid apps ? i remember that when i got my G1 and flashed Cyanogen MOD about idk 3 or 4 months ago, i could see the paid apps :S but then between i didnt even bother if they were there or no, and that i didnt have wi fi or data service, i just forget of that but now i have wi fi and wanna see the paid apps too :S but why i cant ?
it has to do with the six six six in ur name .
now go purify your soul in the waters of lake minatonka
no but realy , maybe its cuz ur country does not support paid apps , maybe ur were accessing it after it wus enabled with market enabler and since 1.6 i think thats been a lil messed up
im from Argentina, maybe thats why xD but since Moto Droid es coming here, you guys think that Paid Apps will be enabled ?
Still no paid apps in most countries
i am in China and I have the same problem.
Only 7 or 9 countries have paid apps. Google says it's because of the local mobile operators not allowing it or not having signed up for it. At the very beginning they said it's because of export & tax regulations that are different in all countries, but that should be totally bogus, because why Amazon or Software companies can sell online everywhere, just not the almighty Google?
To be honest, I believe this is more of a "test the market" type of business strategy, because - as a matter of fact - G1 and Android, etc. have not reached such a large market share and thus running the distribution for paid apps in 160 countries does indeed have cost implications that may not be justified for Google yet.
that doesn't mean i like it this way.
What really nags me is that since I used Market Enabler, Google is obviously regularly locking my account (sometimes for up to 12 hours). It happens every time i "fake" a mobile signature with Market Enabler, and when I go back to "normal" - i just can't sign in, and in that moment I can also not download any apps, INCLUDING free apps
i have a strong feeling that google has build a mechanism that checks where the user appears to be (based on the values of the SIM signature) and where he appeared to be before... and the algorithm accordingly blocks access to google account for a period of time.
It should be easy to determine, because I happen to be registered with China Mobile in one instance, and with O2 in Germany just a minute later, and maybe a few moments later with T-Mobile in the USA......
This is however extremely annoying, and considering the 230 EUR that I paid for my G1 (including google software licenses (i.e. for market, etc.) it is simply a SLAP into my face as a consumer, NOT being able to use the phone as a GLOBAL DEVICE.
As much as I like the G1 now modded up with Cyanogenmod ROM etc. I cannot honestly recommend the phone to anybody until all functions are available to be used anywhere where I have a cell connection. My work makes me travel across the continents and although I can use my laptop and download software, music, videos and everything everywhere, not being able to do the same with the G1 feels a bit like middle-ages right as we approach 2010.
I am also sick that I cannot find any complaint Email address or even phone number on any of Googles websites (try to find one, and if you can, please let me know). Any question you ask is funnelled into a Google-run user-forum or a help page, and if you are lucky there is a Google-employed Administrator, but the statements they give you are simply the "official" Google messages. There is no help at all
The worst is that they apparently encouraged users to call their mobile operators in countries where paid apps are not available yet (to encourage the mobile operators to sign up for paid apps, so google says...), and some users have done it and the reply of the Mobile Operators was that they have to sign up for expensive 3G-data-plans, which then still didn't give them access to paid apps.
Some (or Google) might ask me:
So how did you get your G1 in China (where it is not legally sold), and why do you expect it to work in China?
Well, I am German and I bought my G1 in Germany - but my work brought me to China and I do not want to leave my 230 EUR phone back home JUST BECAUSE GOOGLE DOESN'T WANT ME TO USE IT THERE.
Regarding the market enabler, it works flawlessly on my 32A magic running CM 4.2.5.

yes, my point was not that Market Enabler is not working. it is working perfectly as it should.
my point is that google prevents me to sign in to my account, causing problems for syncing, and downloading apps (free and paid).
is there a "fake market" for the g1 like how iphone has cydia and rockapp?
Short answer, no. The only reason those applications were developed is because everything in the App Store has to be approved by Apple and is sand-boxed in to it's own little folder that can't affect the entire system. Things work very differently in the Android market, anything can be submitted, but if it wants to modify any part of the firmware (/system) it can't unless it's granted root permissions. So android users simply need to "root" their device to take full advantage of those applications, iPhone users need to jailbreak to get them on there in the first place.
There is an app called SlideME, wich is another market with tons of apps, most of them are on the android market, but there are some that you can find it only there.
I got my Nexus one in March. Since then i think i made 3 Google Maps updates and all of them through side loading. Why? Because Google Maps never appeared on the market since day 1 i got the device.
I factory reseted about 10 times and i installed froyo on it and it still doesn't show Google Maps in the market. Yesterday, when Google updated Google Maps, i thought i should insert my Dutch sim card and see if there's any change.
Guess what? It was the first damn app in the top apps tab!!! I updated, inserted my original sim and everything works. Of course the app doesn't show anymore with the original sim.
Apparently, Google only releases Maps to the ones that have access to paid apps.
Can somebody explain why?
I'm so pissed off because of this and i'm thinking of leaving the platform because i'm tired of dealing with discrimination (not having access to paid apps makes me switch even more).
As an android enthusiast i want the newest software so you can understand my frustration of not having access to it right away.
So i guess everybody here has access to paid apps?

I must change countries...

I had the same problem as you until I installed "market access" to allow me to get paid apps. You have to root, though...

That's true. I'll probably root when froyo gets official. I haven't done this before so its gonna be a bit challenging.
