Moving from the Iphone 3G.. Please help ! - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Well... after doing some reading and watching a couple of you tube videos on the diamond I decided to have a play. I picked up a new boxed locked to orange uk htc diamond from fleabay for £160 inc postage... bargain I thought.
Things I've already done..
The first thing was to get it unlocked so I can use my O2 sim in it. This cost £14 via a site on here.. donation I believe goes to this site. I did download some unlocks via torrents and newgroups but at £14 (15 euros) and knowing the moneys going to someone who deserves it.. I decided to pay + its very simple and straightforward to do. Within 5 minutes I had a working phone on O2 ;-) Huzzah!
Then I sync'd it to my outlook that my iphone uses so I then had a full copy of my current contact's. I have added my email on imap4 to sync every 5 minutes.
Software wise I downloaded tomtom 7.910.9185 VGA Black and some Western Europe 1GB 815.2024 maps and 'got' them working (I already own 3 tomtom devices so I figured they have already had enough money off me for now). uploaded the latest uk speedcam files which I pay for from pocket thingy site and postcodes for good measure. Just tried it on the way to work and got a lock in under a minute which is very acceptable. This is a big plus in my eye's for the HTC over the iphone.. anyway.
Speed improvements - I then found some posts and a little you tube video on how to speed up the touchflo. There were three things you do in your settings (disable beams / disable quick menu on today screen and something else). I then downloaded the advanced config software from here and adjusted my memory cache / filter .. WOW what a difference doing this made.. major improvements !
So then whats next ? I used to use facebook alot and share prices so need to find some apps for them.. but I really can't believe I'm thinking about giving up my iphone...
Are there any apps or things that you could recommend to improve this phone anymore ?
Steve

Not sure if you know this but the diamond 2 has a new version of TFLO and XBOX and friends are trying to port it over to the diamond. Everyone and anyone who owns a diamond and knows about this is waiting patiently for this.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=486471
Before changing ROM's or Radio's a HARD SPL is required to protect your device from being bricked.
Read the basics of upgrading here....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=416211
If you are just looking for simple upgrading, like APP's the here.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=441
Just read as much as you can.

UDK has a facebook built in to his ROM!
there is a bbc iplayer which works well you need a copy of coreplayer to use it tho! just search for it
there are pleanty of other useful apps here
flashing a cooked ROM is better any number of tweaks on a standard ROM !

thanks fellas for the advice
I stuck on HardSPL 1.43 and decided to have a play with one of the rom's.. after lots of reading I decided to try v6.4FullHDTFl .. this rom seems to have a good following and I am very impressed with it so far.
would you say this is a good choice ?
I have also seen all the porting work being done on from the D2... looking forward to an updated rom for that.. I have noticed you can download cab files for apps from the D2 would you advise on any for my current rom ?
top forum.. been a member for 5 years.. lol really pushing my posts this year.. lol
Steve

yeah thats i how i choose my ROMs ! the ones with the most followings are usually the better (i think). i personaly am a UDK follower although i have tried almost all other roms, some of which are as good

Cingular 2.26 Aku2.3 w/a2dp FULLY LOADED *BETA* **UPDATED**

Here she is folks..... Keep in mind this is *BETA*.. there are still some things that i have to clean up... So go ahead and give it a whirl... This has only been tested on the 8125 G3 unlocked phones, i dont know if it will work on anything else outside of that!!!! So install at your own risk... Dr Puttingham seems to love it, and i think its pretty good. Dr Puttingham is also working on the stripped down version..
Major thanks goes to Molski for providing the core rom and his tweaks, and Dr Puttingham for his input and advice! And everyone else who made cabs for various things found on this board!
So install and give me your comments and suggestions.. and i will better prepare the final version
oh yeah, you need the link
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Wizard/Roms/Other_Unknown/Shogun_A_La_Carte_Cingular_WWE_2.exe
And for the N00bs.. d/l the exe, choose to unpack it to its own folder, then run ROMUpdateUtility_Wizard_NoID
**UPDATE**
Myself and faria have been working very hard on a future release.. it is currently in a private beta testing phase.. Anyone that is interesting in checking its current status feel free to check our blog
http://betarom.hypersites.com
Just so's everyone knows ... the install appears to "stall" or "hang" at 94, 98 and 100% so don't be alarmed! DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR DEVICE NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TAKES! Sorry to shout but I'm expecting somebody to think that their computer's locked up and "brick" their phone! (And one really shouldn't be running any apps like Outlook or such while upgrading...)
Look around in the Programs group for folders called WIFI, Tools and 800Message.
Wow, that's great to get a new rom - Awesome! But sorry, not to sound ignorant... can you please explain what the G3 unlock is. I'm running a 64k SIM in my phone, not 3G.
Is the 8125 capable of running at 3G speeds, or are earlier models limited? Is this a hardware or software limitation... I would like to get my card swapped out with Cingular if possible. Thanks for your help.
--JAS
when i mention G3 and G4 its the difference in chips in the wizard, if you boot your phone and get .001 at the end of the ipl and spl numbers then you have a G4 and i dont recommend using my new rom, although i might be able to make an identical rom for the G4 (i just dont have a phone with G4 to test it) And the wizard does not do UMTS only Edge, so no its not capable of 3G speeds... wait till cingular offers the 8525 and you can get 3g
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe he is talking about the 3rd Generation 8125 not the 3rd Generation wireless protocol.. Anyone try this ROM yet.. I'm still on Summiter's 2.17 and am not in a situation where I can experiment with my device no matter how much I want to..
Shogunmark, what advantages does this ROM offer up over my 2.17?

Thanks for mentioning the hang... i knew i forgot to mention something.. it was 2am when i finally posted it all
Few Suggestions and Comments
1. I was able to install this rom on a non G3 or G4 chipset and it works beutifully.
2. I would not include Pocket Controller since many people, including myself, don't have that software and thus its useless to me at least.
3. I don't know what program you installed to fully close applications but its a little annoying and puts a red dot in the X. I would recommend instead Smartsky.
4. Nice job including Omap and Omap plus. Very very nice.
5. Amazing job and keep up the good work.
Running it now. All I can say is IMPRESSIVE. This is the best custom rom for the 8125 yet. Thanks!

oh yeah, pocket controller will be left out of the final.. i forgot that it was in the beta.. i just got tired of having to re-install it when i was trying out different cabs and such..
i havent used wclose before, which is the program that fully closes the program.. it is kinda growing on me though
anyway, thanks for your input, i will keep a list of all suggestions for the final. The input is greatly appreciated!
How is this new ROM with dropping calls? I'm using summiter's most recent ROM. The reception is great, but I drop calls like Jenna Jamesson drops panties.

i havent fully tested that aspect.. I mean who makes calls with a phone anyway  ... but this is built of the molski 2.26 rom with the good 2.25.11 radio which i ran prior to this and cant think of where i ever dropped a call with it
Cool. My dropped calls might be the fault of weather panel and flexmail2007. but i've gotten extremely irritated with my dropped calls. I'll give your ROM a shot once you release the final.
Oh and I second the "no need for the app closer software" movement as i'm a wisbar guy anyway.
cant wait for the final of this.... keep up the good work
A little of topic but anyone know when the 8525 will be available in the states.. Is there any link with info on this device.
On your pervious thread you mentioned that you would look into a stripped down version of this. I would like to try it but really dont want all the add ons. Are they removable via the remove programs thing in the settings? Also could you put together a complete list of all the features of this rom...or somewhere that list all the features?
Thanks for all the work!

im an Xbar kinda guy, not free, but used it alot when i use to run smartphones, its a cool little program. But i did like how appcloser will actually close the program from just clicking the x instead of just minimizing.. but at any rate, this rom is for everyone and will be built accordingly to whats popular by use, so if the general population dont want it then i will exclude, or maybe make a cab so it will be easy to install/uninstall.. who knows, just keep up the suggestions!

Dr. puttingham has decided to work on the stripped down version so i can focus on this one.. right now only some of the features are removable from remove programs.. in an effort limit the massive amount of cabs it took to install this i had combined some..
i will compile a full list later today, right now i gotta hit the shower and get to work..
here is the list of what i included:
zoA2DP.cab
ammar_Wireless_Today_Plugin.cab
PPCContactsMgr.cab
BT_COM_PORT (did not install)
TRE.arm.cab
total-comander.cab
WiFiFoFum2.cab
Omapclock_and_Omapclockplusv0.0.4.cab
Wireless.Scanner-Hitchhiker0.4b1.cab
SearchToday.ARM.cab
vxutil.cab
TodayAgenda_PPC.ARMV4.cab
Molski.Biz_Performance_Registry_Tweaks.cab
rar.ppc_arm.cab
Molski.Biz_Customizing_Tweaks.cab
VNC_pocket_viewer.cab (did not install)
Molski.Biz_Stevens_Customization.cab
SP_ARM_504P.cab ~ soti pocket controller
VoiceDial_Button_Customizer.cab
NETCFv2.wm.armv4i.cab
SPWM5CallRec.cab
PPC2003PMVault.cab
fp7_ppc_en (flash) (did not install)
there is a couple that either did not install or didnt install correctly.. will be a quick fix.. and there will be a MAJOR change coming to this...
Mark, what tools are you using to make your ROM's? I've been trying to use mamaich's (think I got the name right), and although I can extract everything fine, I can't seem to turn it back into the binary file..
Looking to see if you might have any ideas.. I've searched the forums more times than I can count..
Thanks!
Well... nothing personal but I'm staying on with shogunmark's Cingular experiment. Lot's to do here but it's geared more for me. (gee I wonder why!)
OK, let it all hang out!
wclose should be left out of startup (my add in, kinda like it - install by user
smartskey - fantastic - install by user
omap - again fantastic -install by user, perhaps with smartskey
CF2 in ROM - get to it Mark!
I'm with the leaner, meaner ROM myself. This one faster, even with omap left out. molski's tweaks and my additions I think help.
And I like the idea of a Cingular ROM as ... that's my ROM...
Lot's of hard work being done here... respect to all!
Cheers!

Ive searched but with no luck

ive upgrade my Orange SPV m3100 today to a TyTn II, and first signs are impressive, however a few little things annoying me, and ive tried searching for help but cant seem to find it.
1, SMS/MMS
this is a massive pain in the ass to me, before on the SPV, it was split and made life easier. but now its merged and is driving me insane for some unknown reason (possibly OCD lol)
2. SMS main screen
On the left soft key it now says "Delete". again on the SPV it was new, made life easier and faster rather than trawling menu for new messages
3. The main today screen. The quality HTC black screen with big clock isnt an option on Orange so it would appear. if so can anyone tell me how? its looks great on the HTC Touch yet on here i have either the crappy Orange side bar or standard Windows bars
4. Touch FLO. wat programs does this work on, cus mine seems obsolete on everything
sorry to be a mega noob, but wud appreciate some input on making this PDA truely awesome

There is no way that you searched and didn't find the answers.
need to find better searching tricks, 1 advice would be to use google or just using a few key words in the forum's search tool
well i did search but "new sms" "delete" "mms" comes up with 32 pages. most of them reading thru, talk about new CABs, and for me thats a last resort, i no u think im being lazy, but after reading 100+ threads with no luck id thought id ask
I got the orange tytn ii before Christmas, and hated the Orangeness of the phone. Found the HTC plugin here:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-htc-home-plugin-v1-0.html
Install on phone, soft reset and then go to "settings", "today" and move to the items tab. Tick the HTC home (not the HTChomeplug) option.
For the black "theme" which is just the black background with a small htc logo in the bottom right and the black bars top and bottom:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/s.php?querywords=htc+black+theme
Again install on phone, soft reset go back to "today" and on the first tab select HTC_new_default
You will still have an orange battery charge icon on the top bar though. I've been happy to live with that!
much appreciated mate. ill have a crack at that when I finish work later.
managed to sort touch flo out aswell
ill carry on searching thru the sms threads, but in the mean time, if any one can point me in the right direction id be very greatful
cheers again

You can find different versions of Arcsoft with the SMS/MMS split. However, it can cause problems when you install it overtop of the merged version. Your best bet is to read up on ROM Upgrading in the Kaiser Wiki, actually the whole Wiki, and then look for a cooked ROM that has the split version of Arcsoft loaded by default.

He is correct. Messing with the Messaging system can bring on Gremlins. Best leave it be or get a ROM that has that from scratch. I've come to be ok with the combined SMS/MMS. At first I didn't like it but I'm fine with it. What I really disliked what the threaded SMS on 6.1.
Think you're stuck with the combined mms/sms. You could always make another folder and manually copy your received mms's over to that. Can't say it bothers me too much. Cure your OCD by convincing yourself that an mms is just an sms with an attachment!
Regarding the previous post. Once you have downloaded the cabs copy them into a folder on your phone (eg. my downloads) and install them, then soft reset.
Once you have it up and running you can go back to "today" (settings) and choose from the items tab what other notifications you want to display below the "big clock"!!
Top tip if you're with Orange. I managed to blag the Orange Business data tariff of 250mb per month for £8 per month including VAT. This rolls over as well!! Phone up customer services and ask (nicely) if they'll bolt it on for you. If not ask for the data tariff department and sweet-talk them.
nice one guys, many thanks, ill let u no how it goes in a bit
hey, spot on so far mate, any other tips? or things that are good to install, got msn so happy with that too
by the way ive got a great blag for the business net user, just wondering wat questions they asked?
no luck blagging , just out of curiosity, is anyone else having problems with IE lagging loads whilst u scroll down even tho the page has loaded?

Install 1.93 ROM Default Theme on Vodafone Touch Diamond?

Guys,
New user - very impressed, found lots of good stuff here - hoping someone can help with this one:
I have had my Vodafone Touch Diamond for just over a month - very nice phone, awful speed!!! I hate the Vodafone default theme, so I had installed the default black one that I found here - very nice looking theme!!
Now I have just upgraded to the 1.93 Vodafone ROM, and the phone finally runs at a half-decent pace - problem is the nasty Vodafone them is back. I then re-installed the old black theme I had, and it has slowed the phone right down again (in fact slower than it was on the old ROM, and some graphics weren't as good) - it looks like the 1.93 ROM has a newer version of Touchflo (or is it the theme?). Basically, the phone, on the settings screen, says it is running Touchflo 3D version 1.1.34574.1_1630.38. It clearly is different, as the animation is less, and there are subtle changes (alphabetical index when selecting country or town in Weather, for example).
I would rather have the newer TouchFlo (the losses in animation are worth it for good performance).
So the question - anyone know where I can get the updated black Touchflo software for the 1.93 ROM? I appreciate I could flash a non-voda ROM into the phone, but would rather not - don't want to lose my Voda sat-nav, for instance.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated, guys.
Thanks
Paul
Hi Paul From Swindon,
I'm Nathan From Oxford lol....oh the hatred (football Terms)
I'm using the vodafone ROM and i installed this great Diamond TF3D Config Tool.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=405749
I then also got the Black Diamond Theme, can't remember the link for that and saved it to my internal storage.
I then used the Config tool to install the black theme.
Its fairly quick and keeps the extras like sat nav etc.
I did try installing the new HTC ROM however it DID like you say removed all the settings and the vodafone extras. so it took me about an hour to find and install the Vodafone one again.
Annoying!
Also in Oxford
hi guys, Ralf here also in Oxford. I've had my Diamond for about the same time and been playing with some of the tweaks to try and speed it up. Interestingly I bumped into a guy in Carphonewarehouse the other day who was the Microsoft Trainer for the Diamond. He was great and spent about 20 mins showing me around some areas of the phone. The unit he was running was not Vodafone branded and was so amazingly quick. I've managed to up the speed a bit but it's still slow in comparison to the unit I saw the MS guy with.
To be honest I've been very wary of trying one of the other ROM upgrades as I don't want to brick my handset or loose the Vodafone Sat Nav etc.
I just looked and my handset is on ROM 1.37.161.2 dated 26/6/08.
Can you please point me in the direction of where you got the latest Vodfone ROM from and how easy it to apply it (I should also add that I'm using a Mac not a PC so if there is some PC based tool then I'll have a small problem using it).
Thanks
Ralf
heres the link for the official vodafone ROM update LINK
its a piece of cake to install, but not sure about using a mac!
just a quick thought about the vodafone sat nav;
once you've clicked through the initial link, it just downloads a cab (installation) file,
which is easy enough to find and copy through active sync onto your computer for safe keeping.
Thanks
Cheers for the info and link there, I managed to download the installer and am just waiting now until the new PC laptop I ordered for my wife arrives at the weekend so that I can give it a go.
Thanks
Ralf
In Finland here. I want to use the official ROM as well, but my provider doesn't have one available, and the HTC Europe site tells me that the ROM updater is not for my device.
Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device.
I am a registered e-club member, with the serial number registered. How can I get the ROM properly? Or if I install this one from Vodafone, will it affect my phone somehow?

Hi Nwilko,
Did you have to install HardSPL before flashing original HTC rom?
Hi Guys,
Thanks for your thoughts so far - sorry, been off-line all week.
Nathan, thanks for your thoughts - this is what I tried doing, but when I installed the defalt black theme from this site via the config tool, it went incredibly slowly, and lost some of the new features in the TouchFlo system, such as alphabetical indexes on the weather, and seemed to return some of the aminations that had been taken out - it was taking up to 5 seconds to scrol between main screens, much worse than before - I also noticed I couldn't read some of the text.
I guess what I could do with is the Touchflo software from the 1.93 ROM update. It, I assume, exists as a cab that installs when you first switch on a non-branded phone after a ROM update. I am guessing that default one already comes with the black theme, and has the speed and menu improvements.
I have tried to live with the Voda theme for the last week, but there is no getting away from the fact that it looks terrible. The whole phone just looks so good when the black theme is applied.
I am tempted just to try and install the HTC ROM and scrap my Voda one. I really didn't want to lose Sat-Nav - I agree the link on the Voda ROM just downloads a Cab file, but I am worried it won't activate - does something in the ROM tell it that ot's on a free subscription, or does the website activate it from the mobile number - I don't want to pay 4.99 per month for it! Anyone tried it?
Thanks
Paul
Guys,
Gave up on trying to get a newer black theme for my Vodafone TD. Bit the bullet, and installed Hard-SPL, and the latest factory ROM (thanks in large part to the exceellent info on this site!).
So far all looks good - nice and quick, lovely black theme once more, nice speed, and newer radio ROM too (the new Voda Rom still had older radio version).
Fingers crossed, it seems much better - and because I kept the Vodafone Sat-Nav CAB file, re-installed it and it seems to work fine!!
Coolio!!

Hi guys I will I also have the same problem the vodafone diamond is to slow.
I will install this rom

very good comments .I don't have time to do it now I am travelling abroad. I will be grateful if someone try it on vodafone devise, and rate it.
so, does anyone have the default black tf3d theme from a 1.93 rom?

Due to get a Vario3 - newbie- top 10 to-do's

Hi,
Not been here for a while. I had an old XDAII Himi and came here to flash the rom etc and use it as a TomTom / IGO.
My mate is about to upgrade his Kaiser for something better so I'm getting it cheapo. Its an MDA so I assume it will be locked to T-Mobile. So the first task will be to unlock it so I can put my orange sim in it.
So what I'm looking for in advance is like a hitlist of things I need to do to turn a std T-Mobile Vario3 into a nice jazzy up-to-date unit.
Please give me some pointers / recommendations.
Thx
this page has a link to a few wikis that have themselves have other links to very useful pages
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=377
but to save me wasting time on things are mediocre , I'd prefer a list of 'must haves'.
EG the most popular rom and applications
Once you've hardspl'd (etc) your phone look at some of Dutty's 6.1 roms, they are usually a gd start. HTCcuustomiser is a usefull bit of kit for changing some of the icons etc of the phone.
After that its just a matter of trawling the forums for .cab files that look usefull.
Im a fellow newb thou, so you'll have 2 look them up yourself, im still learning the ropes myself!

Just bought a fuze today

so i just bought a fuze today it was att only but i got sim unlock that it whats next any help im super exited any recommendations on anything would be helpful also im on tmobile is there anything that i can do for better service and dont waste your time tellin me to search if you do you obviously have no life but to those who help thanks a millie
US or UK T-Mobile ?
If you have the horrible pink and white version of TF3D i recommend you flash a new ROM asap !! I spent ages with trying different themes to overlay the T-Mobile setup and decided the best way to get rid of it was with a new ROM.
I thoroughly recommend the latest NRG ROMs
as for free apps, my list of must haves are:
TCPMP - better compatability for video playing
MoblMsg - SMS for groups
SkyFire Browser (but only if you have wifi you can use really)
Pocket Uno - speak to my wife about the hours i lose on that one !!
Mega Games Pack (found somewhere here on XDA im sure)
Slide2Unlock (S2U) - replaces the standard locking facility
GAlaram - alarm clock
Id also suggest you have a nosey at SPB Mobile shell. There is a free trial version on their site. its a replacement for TF3D and i have to admit I now prefer it
Have Fun
