Has anyone else noticed that the phone is slow to wake, lock the screen set it down for 10 seconds and press either the power button or the finger print scanner and it takes 2-2.5seconds for it to wake. I am not sure if this is how it was before but I recently noticed it.
my device wakes up directly.. under 1 sec. (what have you done?)
I took out my 128Gb Lexar Class 10 MicroSD and it is now very fast to wake, I tried the SD card on my S7 and it has no effect on the S7's wake time what so ever. I am not sure whats in the microSD causing it to slowly wake up or if it is a firmware limitation on the P9 Plus
I have a P9 here with a 64Gb MicroSD card and it is also slow to wake as Ive compared waking the the P9 with a microSD and the P9 Plus with out.
My P9 Plus with 64GB microSD card, instant wake within 1 second. No issue so far.
Hmmm I wonder what is causing it then. I formatted both MicroSD and tried it on the P9 Plus and get the same issue :/
What is the firmware versions of the handsets you guys have ?

I have updated to B170 and it is still slow to wake even if the SDcard has no contents :/

L29C636B170 firmware?
If you lock the phone and leave it alone for 10-20 seconds and press the power button you dont get a wake up delay ? Its happen to both the P9 and P9 Plus I have here and with the 64Gb MicroSD from Sandsik and 128GB from Lexar.

I just upgrade to this L29C636B170. No issue, never had wake up delay issue, wake up always within 1 to max. 2 seconds.
Here seems only you have this issue. Possible certain apps you install affecting it.

If it takes your device 2 seconds max to wake then that is th issue. The device wakes in less than 1 second with out and SDcard installed ( I am estimating 0.4-0.5 seconds )
With the SDcard installed and I lock the phone and leave it alone for at least 10seconds then the initial wake time is 2seconds. If I lock then unlock again in less than 10seconds the wake time is less than 1s.
Can you do a video on how fast your device wakes? Ill probaly upload one showing the delay.
I dont think it has anything to do with the apps as I dont have apps installed on the SDcard and even if the sd is empty it still adds a delay. I tested it on another 16Gb card and has the same issue.

I count by my own not using any thing to measure. I said maximum 2 seconds but never reach, always 1 second or to more accurate 1.3 seconds? lol is that 0.3 seconds or even 1 seconds bothering?
You said yours is 10 to 20 seconds, did you know how slow is that? if your unit is 10 to 20 seconds then it is way something big wrong.
My device is 1 to 2 seconds, which is nothing wrong to me at all.
I won't do any video about it, all my used before device fingerprint is 1 to 2 seconds and it is pretty normal to me, include S7 Edge, Redmi Note 3, Mi Max and current device P9 Plus. All with MicroSD card with capacity for at least 32GB to 64GB. With or without it never affect my fingerprint unlocked in any mentioned device.

There seems to be a massive miscommunication here.
I didnt say 10 to 20 seconds but if I did, please quote me in that so I can have it corrected.
What I mentioned was if you lock the device and leave it alone for atleast 10 seconds and try to wake the device it takes 2 - 2.5 seconds longer if an SDcard is installed, if there is no SDcard installed it takes 0.5 to wake.
I also want to clarify it, this has nothing to do with finger print read speed, just how fast the device can wake.
I mentioned to leave it alone for 10 seconds after locking thr phone as the issue does not appear if you just lock and wake the phobe immediately.
2 seconds is not a big deal but it becomes a big deal when folks misunderstand what I wanted to find out and claim they dont experience the issue but infact they do but just didnt understand what I wanted to find out. This is not nitpickin just wanted to know if I am the only one affected but it clearly shows this is the norm for the P9 and P9 Plus which you also confirmed is happening to you.
I aslo have and s7 and a note 3 none of them have an added delay to the wake speed when a microSD is used.

Sorry miss read that 10 to 20 seconds.
My P9 Plus is the fastest to unlocked than S7 Edge or Redmi Note 3 and Mi Max.
It is 1 second to 1.3 seconds not 2 seconds as it never reach that. I dunno you are actually nitpicking on that (you really are just you didn't realise). I just simply point out at 1 to 2 seconds earlier as nobody will point out 1.3 seconds. Now I change to 1.3 seconds purposely for you.
It is around 1 to 1.3 seconds and it is the fastest unlocked and wake up device I ever use. S7 Edge is actually the slowest unlocked among device i ever use recently but it still as good as it serve for unlocked and wake.
My comment ended here and no longer will reply. Peace.

You are still missing the point, I wanted to know if it is normal for the P9/P9 Plus to have a longer wake delay if an SDcard was installed. If that is normal then I accept that but if that is caused by my SDcard and only affecting my unit they I need to have this checked and possibly replaced.
Thank you.
I've a SanDisk Extreme 64 GB microSDXC Class 10 Memory Card in my P9 Plus - wake up on fingerprint scanner is INSTANT (snaps fingers).
Apologies for not reading all of the thread; have you tried a different sd card?

Yes, I have the same memory card too. Has a delay. I have tried a total of 3 cards. The only time it instantly wakes if I lock the phone and wake it again in under 10seconds other wise the delay sets in.

Have you tried the dreaded factory reset?
Wake up snappy with or without SD installed for me! *under sec!
One thing I loved about the Note 5 was the camera opened instantly when double pressing the home button. It was ready to shoot in less than a second every time. The Note 7 camera is really not like that. From off to preview, it feels more like 5 seconds. That's really a huge step back. I'm pretty sure all my settings are the same, other than writing to an SD card, which shouldn't be a big deal when opening the camera. Is it just me? Is it something you think we'll see fixed?
I have both in my hands right now, the note 5 is SLIGHTLY faster than the 7 in opening the camera.
Takes 3 seconds for my camera to pop up. Never had this problem with the 5
2 seconds for me which is MUCH faster than the Note 4.
yeah same problem here. I thought it was just me. Maybe they will fix it in the future.
Is anyone who used double-home on their Note 5 who's coming to Note 7 getting even reasonably comparable performance from device off? Less than one second up to 3-5 seconds is absurd. It would be nice to have some kind of setting or some way to keep the camera package "pre-loaded" the way the Note 5 supposedly did. I'd happily pay 1% battery an hour to be able to do that.
Mine opens instantly pretty much. Faster than my s6 edge plus did for sure. It's ready to shoot before I can even say "one". I don't have an SD card installed yet (256 finally coming tomorrow woooo) so maybe that has something to do with it? Have you tried removing the SD card and saving to internal?

2 seconds here from off screen, double click, camera preview.
You're telling me the phone can be in an off state, asleep (off for several minutes) and double clicking home will get you from off to showing a live preview in 2 seconds?

Not 100% sure about deep sleep, since I used phone about 5 min before, but actually yes, from blank locked screen to preview, less than 2 sec, more like 1.5 sec and with fingerprint lock. I would post the video but my back up phone is at home and frankly I don't care if you believe it or not. Maybe something in the settings, I like to run my phone lean, no facebook, syncs and other stuff I don't use and I know from my wife's phone some of those programs can really choke up even fastest hardware.

Does Note 9 has a recording time limit? On which mode?
I haven't tried it myself on the store so I don't know.. I remember my S8 has a limitation on some of the mode... Hope Note 9 doesn't have one.
I am very sad/ pissed to inform you that the note 9, 512gb does have record limits.... I bought this model specifically so I can use to record videos , instead of carrying my sony ax53 around. I placed my preorder back in mid August, and it was finally delivered yesterday.
3840 x 2160, 60fps: 5 minute limit
3840 x 2160, 30fps: 10 minute limit
2560 x 1440, 30fps: no limit
1920 x 1080, 60fps: 10 minute limit
1920 x 1080, 30fps: no limit
2224 x 1080, 30fps: no limit
1440 x 1440, 30fps: no limit
1280 x 720, 30fps: no limit.
No limit really means till you fill up your storage.
I don't really want to root my phone, but may have to in hopes of getting a zero camera mod or I should just return this phone and get an iphone....... moving from a pixel 2xl, to note 9. Been using android since HTC hd2 then to Samsung s2, note4, nexus 5x, s7edge, pixel 2xl, now note9.

Nope, don't root your phone just for looking zero camera mod... for note 9 it is still not available...
So the issue seems to go much deeper to the file system with a limit of 4gb file sizes. Why Samsungs own app has that limitation(boggles my mind )Maybe a custom rom with ext4 or exfat file system for where the files are stored?
Edit( most likely a limitation where the storage location where pictures and video are stored is formatted fat32 to allow windows machines to see them when plugged in to transfer videos without paying Microsoft extra licensing for exfat)
I tried using open camera and 4k 60fps is not supported at any bitrate
4k 30fps will record up 4gb, then creates a new one once the size is reached however, the transitions from one file to the next is not seamless ( about a half second gap loss) after putting the videos into an editor.

Hmm.. Personally I used a S8 for video recording, and I even record video files with 20GB+ size.. I haven't tried with my Note 9 yet, but I assume it will have the same capability (since we had an unlimited recording time on lower res and fps). So far, I think Samsung limits the recording time so the phone won't get too heated up.
So I set my camera to 2560 x 1440, and using the default camera , I let it sit and record for about 2 hours. I turned off off hevc mode to make the size bigger. The recording looked like it was going just fine until I looked at the video, and it had been automatically broken into multiple files at 4.3gb each. Gotta find a way to reformat the sdcard partition, to see if that is what is causing the limit. I've added screenshots to show.
Any new news with this tread? I am pissed off about this limits,. 1080p,60fps and this 10 minutes limit? This is bullsht! Is there any other app that can record 1080p with 60fps without time limit? I want to record my first review od earphones (i work in music shop and have unlimited access to earphones and players ) and i dont want to bring my camera with me every time when i want to record video :/ And my daughter is performing (she plays cello) and i want to have ability to record longer video than 10 minutes

Nope. It still has limitations even in Pie.
Looks like Samsung did this to ensure the phone not getting overheated.
If you really want to remove the limitations, you need to root the phone.

4k30fps also have 10 minutes limitation.
To be honest, I can't really blame Samsung for doing this. Even my gopro heats up at 1080p 60fps. Even though gopro doesn't have time limitation, we need to remember that gopro processor exists solely for capturing videos only. Meanwhile, on Samsung phone, there will be many task burdens the phone besides of recording as well.
For the record, I rooted my old S8 and use it to record seminars etc. The phone still heats up even though I solely use it for recording (airplane mode turned on and I don't have any games or social apps installed there). At one point, even the phone overheated when I use the 60fps mode.

Agreed but still - so powerfull phone as Note9 should have overcome this heating problem that exist for so many years, don`t you think? And on the other hand, i have this small cheap camera for car road recording, 1080p, 60fps - all working, for many hours straight - no problem, warm - yes but no damage there. And that is 5 years old peace of cheap cam.
Maybe there is some apps that dont have time limitation and can record 1080p, 60fps? Do you know any? I`ve tried few but no success.

I`ve just tried modified gcam for exynos and it is not working with full hd and 60fps. I`m affraid that i will have to use my mirrorless camera for recordings or just cuts my recordings in 10 minutes pieces and using some software to join movies in one piece. Damn. So expensive phone and so much problems with it.

Hmm.. That is strange... Perhaps we're using different version of gcam? Mine was able to record 1080/60 without problem.
Also, the recordings cut in 4GBs... It's still everywhere.. To be honest, I'm quite amazed by how the industry doesn't catch up with exfat formatting that allows for more than 4GB per file.. Even in latest GoPro camera and DJI Osmo Pocket that I bought, it still have 4GB limits. My partner even have a handycam that stubbornly splits into several 4GB files.
So, yeah, for combining files, we still do have problems.
If you want to maximize the video recordings on your note 9, I suggest that you root your phone. Well, you won't have access to samsung pay or other secured apps anymre, but personally I think it is a good chaoice if you want portability and long high quality videos in a same package.
Edit:
Also, using the rooted app, you can film file without splitting. So, it will really helps if you really concern about joining files.
well, you guys talked a lot about the 4GB limitation... actually most of the modern android phones don't have the fat32-formatted internal storage, and the so-called internal storage is in fact the directory /data/media mounted on /storage/emulated as the virtual filesystem "sdcardfs", while the /data partition on samsung phones is formatted to ext4. therefore, storing a file larger than 4GB in /sdcard won't be a problem at all. (and i have a 10 GB linux chroot image on it. )
moreover, samsung has FUSE exfat support. i also have an exfat-formatted micro sd card in my phone. you can give it a try too - just format it to exfat on computer and insert to your phone, it should work properly.
btw, im using galaxy s8 and looking for the solution to the time limit too. i'd only like to record [email protected] videos for longer than 10mins, don't really care about 4k stuff. any advices would be very appreciated, even if root is required.

for s8: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...mera_mod_samsung_s8_bitrate_settings&hl=en_US
root is required. removes the time limit and you can modify bitrate settings. doesn't cut at 4 GB but might seamlessly split the file after about 18-20 GB. when you join the two files, you won't notice it was cut.
i needed something to remove the time limit as i needed to record up to 8 hours of video at a time. i came here to see if there are any alternatives to it, and i'm still searching for something similar (and better) for a year now. nothing else works and i haven't found a better alternative for a year now. this is the only thing that works as intended.
it's also available for note8, note9, s7, and s9. hope to see it on the note10 soon.
p.s. your phone will overheat in about one hour if it's a hot summer day outside. it will take some more if it's colder. i use a fan.

this sounds good. i've had a look at the description and watched the video, it seems that the actual magic is in the generated module zip file. why not just open it and see what's modified, and how the modified files differ from the original ones, in case you'd like to get rid of the app or do some further modifications? i've discovered that the /system/cameradata/camera-feature.xml file contains some interesting configurations, thought i haven't tried that app yet since im not sure what it'll actually do or if it's undo-able. and if you don't mind, can you attach your module file please?
Hey Guys,
Just wondering if there is any way to make the Super Slow Mo time longer then .2 or .4 secs?
Are there any 3rd party apps that allow you to use the Samsungs 960fps Super slow Mo to a longer recording time?
Reason me asking is because i try to record specific videos but hard to time it to capture the event in its 2 or 4 sec window.
The auto capture feature wont catch some small events so that option does not always work for me.
any input would be appreaciated!

I guess not because of hardware limitation..
Im guessing we wold need 16gb of ram or 12 core 3 ghz processor for that.....
But if you find a way post an answer ?
slomo just writes video files with high framerates. apart from available storage space, i dont get why a longer record time wouldn't be possible... unless it buffers it in memory while the write to internal storage is done so to not get dropped frames.
internal storage is quite fast though...
Hmm.. 1280x720 pixels times 960 frames per second = 884 736 000 raw samples per second (assuming each pixel has single color, to be processed for full color, then some other processing, then encoded/compressed to video file formats, before stored).
That is, order of magnitude 1 GB/s of raw data to be processed or stored (assuming 8-bit samples for videos; they could more or less bits). SD cards are still 10-30x too slow to take that raw data in. CPUs (with DSP units) might be capable enough to process and encode that stream in real time.. The RAM might be able to move the data at that rate (so maybe up to few seconds could be taken, if enough RAM is free before the snippet). But there could be a bottleneck on the bus between the camera and the SoC.
Maybe there is some internal buffer that fills up while earlier samples are simultaneously being pushed from camera to SoC, and the buffer fills up at around that 0.4s point.
Note that the [email protected] and [email protected] both are about 500 MB/s, and the system can sustain that. So, the extra 500MB/s * 0.4s would indicate about 200MB buffer size, if that idea is correct.
But, what if we could have even half that resolution (say, 850x480) at 960fps, or the 1280x720 at 480fps? Those should have the similar lower data rates that can be sustained.
Just as a side note - 0.2 seconds on the Note 9 is real 960fps capture, resulting in an 8 second clip with 6 seconds of slow motion. 0.4s is filmed at 480fps, stretched and interpolated such that you get 12 seconds of slow motion as if it was filmed at 0.4s/960fps. So they need to cut the corners in some ways, but I do wish there was a 1080p option like the Xperia XZ2, even if it is more brief.
What I'm somewhat annoyed is that there's occasionally a stutter or frame repeats that occur with super slo mo, especially after the latest update I got a few weeks ago. I tried clearing the camera app data which didn't help.
Hey guys,
Is there any information about 4k60fps video recording?
Is it still limited to 5 or 10 minutes?
I hope the fixed it in the plus version with 512gb of storage.
Thanks ?
I'm wondering about this as well.
I read somewhere on youtube that the time limits may still be there, 10 minutes @1080P 60fps and 5 minutes @4k 60fps. Still not an actual confirmation so I'm still hoping that the limits have been removed.

Click to collapse
So need to root the phone again to remove them ... this is pain! Apple doesn`t have limits at all .... the only limit is your storage : ( but i don`t like the egg phones =)
thank you for the information
I was in Best Buy store today and did play with their display units of all S10 models, but mainly spent time with S10e, as this is what I have preordered. I did go to camera and saw that 4K/60p mode, but haven't recorded anything. So you could go to best buy and try it out
I have read the recording restrictions remain other than the slo-mo recording which I believe has doubled in duration.
Just found this on youtube,
