NEW (29/4/09) --> after further investigation and discussion with other kaiser owner affected with same problem, the thing could be more important than expected as many Kaiser could be potentially having the same problem.
The issue is that after going on flight mode the unit can start to have problems to get registered to the phone operator. Sometimes the problem is mitigated temporary by disabling 3G but the problem can persist. The unit is able to see the operators available but not to connect to any of them. Units affected were built between 07/07 and 11/07.
If you are affected please post your release date (DATE: DDMMYY(TBXX)/EU) that you can find on the sticker on the atenna in the back, under the back cover.
If you are not, be aware of the problem as you may start to have it if you go to flight mode or travel abroad.
NO SOLUTION FOR THE TIME BEING, AND IN GENERAL AFFECTED UNITS ARE ALREADY OUT OF THE GUARANTEE PERIOD.
----------------------------
My TYTN II has more than 1 year.
The problem: Basically it is out of coverage all time, and does not manage to get connected to any network.
It started about 1 year ago. I am base in France and I want to USA. When I arrived to New York it did not work anymore. I thought it could have been the roaming or just that I had changed the SIM card a few weeks before and the operator did something wrong (ORANGE). But the point is that the same SIM was working in my spare nokia and on the other hand an Orange Spain SIM had the same problem.
I spend a few days in USA moving from one state to the other and after 2 or 3 days the phone started to work but with some problems (changing from one operator to another it did work) finally the 4th day it was working.
When I returned to Paris, it did work ok for a while.
Then one day the phone just droped the connection to the operator, and at the same time the Bluetooth link to the BT carkit and the GPS stopped and restarted. Since that moment the phone just did not work anymore (only the telephone).
I open a case to HTC who never replied. On the phone they just say inconsistent things.
The WM6.1 official release came out and I did upgrade it--> still the same. A new ticket open to HTC without replay. I stopped using it for a while.
In summer I went to Spain for vacations and started to play with it again. One day it started to work again without any justificiation.... so I left it like that.
Months latter I got a mail from HTC (really very reactive) but at that point the phone was working since more than 4 months.
By the end of 2008 when I was in Spain and this time using my Orange Spain SIM, I had to replace the SIM. After a few days, and after travelling across Spain, I had again the same problem. And actually the phone did not get any coverage with any of the SIM I use (Orange FR, Orange ES, Movistar...). Little by little it started to work again and it has stay like this for a few months.
In the last few weeks I have been in UK and Italy. Again started to have problems and finally, after a visit to Italy my phone has stop working. It is like that for 2 weeks.
The point is that I have tryed all kind of things:
- force to GSM or let it in auto
- change the UMTS and GSM bands
- different SIM from different operators
- Official WM6.0 and WM6.1 spanish
- finally I started to flash different Radio ROM and also coocked ROM
- when I search manually the operators or I try to fix it manually, I see that the phone is actually capable to see the available networks, but it does not manage to get registered in any.
At the end it is always in with the "!" symbol, saying either that it has no coverage or that the access is refussed.
I have seen that in two occasions I had changed the SIM a few weeks before. Also that the problem has always happened after putting the phone in flight mode (actually I was flying) and landing in a new city or even a new country; except once.
Last point: it is free HTC Spanish version. It is actually the second as the first I had was stollen. With the first I never had problems.
I will end up sending it back to HTC but obviously it will take very very long and meanwhile I will not have the GPS and the rest of the PDA that still work ok.
Any idea?
Thanks
Wow that was a long post, even so, you've left out some important info. Which ROM Radio and SPL versions are on the device now (the wiki explains how to find all this out if needed). Has the device suffered any physical bumps or been used in the rain/got wet? Have you tried cleaning the battery terminals and spring posts with a cotton bud soaked in contact cleaner or IPA? Not sure if the last one will help (especially if there are no battery charge problems) but it may be an intermittant problem and I've found this to be a known issue with the TyTN II. Also, how much more than one year have you had the phone (my TyTN II came with a warranty about 15 months).
Thanks for the info. I have verified all connectors, including battery and SIM.
More over I have 2 batteries and I have done all kind of test with both and with and without power supply.
On the other hand, I have tested all (really all) the RADIO ROM available in the FTP server of xda-developers, plus some more up to the 1.70.18.02 and
1.71.09.01.
Right now I'm running the 1.64.06.04.
In terms of ROM, I have also tested serveral. The last few are:
- offical HTC WM6.1 ESP (BTW with radio 1.65.17.56)
- KaiserESNReconstructedTestFix02
- RUU_Kaiser_SPA_WM6.1.19212.MobileVirtualVista2.21_radio_sign_25.83.40.02_1.65.16.25_by_ansar
The one I am running right now is:
- KaiserSpanish diamond II
The unit is from nov. 2007, I guess is out of guarantee. On top it was a gift...
But this is not the issue, the problem is actually that I guess that HTC will take several weeks to repare or replace it, and I can not live without the PDA part. I am considering to buy a second hand unit and then we will see....

How? The mark one eyeball won't pick up a thin film of grease which may still be enough to pose occasional connection problems. The best bet is simply to clean it as described (being careful not to spray the device directly to ensure the moisture indicators aren't triggered).

I have 3 batteries (original and 2 spares) and have had battery terminal problems in the past. I think that all those battery changes may exacerbate the problem. Cleaning as described from time to time, has prevented any recurrence.

You could try reviewing the ROM thread for that ROM but if the problem occurred the same with other ROMs, that's unlikely to be the cause.

Still a few outstanding questions, has it been subjected to anything you may think could cause such problems such as being dropped, shocked or soaked? Also what SPL does it have on it and have you tried reflashing the SPL version (as everything else has already been flashed many times)? I'm thinking this is more likely a hardware defect but you may as well take every step you can to rule out other problems before going down the path of employing specialists to take a look at it.
If you do revert it to a UK Orange standard setup and send it off to HTC in Milton Keynes for repair, you may be surprised at how quickly they can turn around such a job. Although the only service I've used from them was a free ROM reversion while under warranty, after booking my device in over the phone in advance, I dropped it off in the morning of the agreed day and it was ready when I picked it up last thing the same day so the repair centre can really be very efficient (don't ask me about the call centre though ). There's no harm in enquiring with them first but I do suggest you revert everything back to 'as supplied' spec first (even though there's virtually no chance it'll be fixed for free).
Wow that is totally crazy. Good luck with that.

I have gone through the forum to find another similar cases, but no luck. I agree with you that it is very unlikely that it is the ROM, as it happened with 5 different ROMs, including official WM6 and WM6.1.

A few drops in 1 year an a half, this is almost unavoidable. But not a big crash, and in any case it never happened just before the problem. The only real correlations I've noticed are:
- in tow occations it happened after my operator replaced the SIM
- in all cases but one, I had problems when roaming or when coming back from abroad
I did not mention it but I reflashed the SPL a few times.... the same. I have also changed the Network Wizard and run it several times (there are some problems in the forum where people can not get access to some of the operator's services). Nothing changed
There is another point, when I go to the configuration of the Phone, I can list the available networks, but the issue is that it does not get registered to any of them. It may even be a problem with the operator an not the phone itself.

You did mention sometimes it refuses to be registered on the correct network. If you use your secondary phone to call the operator, perhaps they can tell from their side why registration is being refused? I assume the SPL version you are using is fully compatible with the ROMs you are using. Other than that it's time to contact the repair centre and if you're now back in France then the HTC website (or Orange in France) should provide details of closer, more convenient repair centres. Good luck.
Just got a second Kaiser (2nd hand) and started to swap some parts between both. I found out that the problem is in the motherboard.
It may be the board or, as said before, a problem with the network operator.
I continue to check. BTW, any tip is welcome.

By that if you mean it's hardware related fair enough but remember there are lots of bits of hardware attached to the mainboard which are easily and relatively cheaply replaceable (eg the sim holder) so a skilled repairer should be able to diagnose exactly where the fault lies.

Well thats a very important distinction to make. Option 1 may be uneconomic to repair where as option 2 would be free - don't you think you should get a definitive response from your network provider?

Get a definitive response from the network provider and then if reqd from an HTC repair centre (as suggested in my last post). In the meantime you can carry on as normal using the 'good' Kaiser.
Thansk.
If you have seen the rips of the Kaiser, it is not so easy to repair what is suppose to be faulty.
When you open it, you take out some parts:
- Antenna
- Speaker
- the roller control on the left side
Then you can remove the main card by disconnecting two flex cables.
When you have done this, your unit becomes two main parts:
- the main body that is completely ripped off
- the other half that contains the LCD, keyb, tilt mechanism, SIM reader, SD reader
The mothercard is actually monolitic, and most of the components are shilded with a methalic case solded to the board. There you have memory, processor, communication chipset...
I am currently using the "new" board on the old phone. Old the rest of the components are from the old one (including antenna, speaker....) and it works, so the fault is in the mother card.
Then when I use the old card with the "new" phone I have the same problem. I have a good and a bad one. Considering that I have no guarantee (and if I had, after all this manipulations, I have lost it for sure), I will first check with Orange. It is not very likely that it has been an operator problem as I have tried with many SIM from different operators and in different countries.
At this point is not so bad as I can play with the spare unit, test new ROM and SW, etc... before running it in the operational one. I also have spare parts in case that I broke something else (LCD...). I am even considering to buy another in ebay, something broken but with the mother card still running, so I can actually have two fully operational.
Pop Q. here, does it work 102% except your connection issues? Does it lag, screen freeze or acting strange in any other way? If this is a hard problem I would suspect SPL. What SPL version are you on now? What other have you tried and with which rom? Also I dont mind the lengt of this tread, but it takes a bit more time when its written in "story" mode

Thanks again for your help.
Don't get disapointed, I have gone through all the story because the problem is quite weird and this is maybe the only way not to miss an important detail.
As said twice before, answering to the questions, I have traid different SPL and ROMs. To be more precise:
- The problem first started with original HTC SW set up., long time ago.
- I only started to play with different SPL a few weeks ago, and because I wanted to test different radios as the problem is on the phone part.
- I have tried SPLs 1.93, 1.56, 3.28. For sure 1 or 2 more but I don't have any record. Currently running 3.28
- I have installed radios:
- 1.27.11.31
- 1.27.12.11
- 1.27.12.17
- 1.27.12.32
- 1.27.14.09
- 1.27.15.32
- 1.58.26.20
- 1.64.06.04 --> currently running
- 1.64.08.21
- 1.70.18.02
- 1.71.09.01
- I have tried ROMs:
- official HTC WM6 spanish
- official HTC WM6.1 Spanish
- Mobile Virtual Vista 2.21/2.20 D3D WM6.1 5.2.19212.1.0.3
- Mobile Virtual Vista 2.10/2.00 WM6.1 5.2.19212.1.0.3gullum
- Throttle Diamond I multi language (updated) --> currently running
Do not hesitate to ask further details.
Clean the contacts on the sim slot and the card itself?
OOPS I see that you did.
Anyway, perhaps the sim card connection to the motherboard is flaky

You were right the first time. 'Verified' is not the same as cleaned correctly and thoroughly, just as saying it will be done doesn't mean it has been done (correctly and thoroughly). It's not that I'm simply dissapointed. I am annoyed at being given the run-around when it comes to getting concise answers and actions quickly.
I note that we finally have the CURRENT full ROM/Radio/SPL details when picked from a list of other things we didn't ask for (although still no word on whether the actual terminal/connector cleaning has yet taken place for sim and battery and if it was done correctly and thoroughly using the correct materials). I don't know if they are all fully compatible with each other, especially that radio (and to be honest, I can't be bothered checking the custom ROM thread to find out). To say all combinations have been tried is little use because that could mean mixing incompatible items together with a net result of problems. It's akin to saying I've verified all the fluid levels under a car bonnet by filling the radiator with oil, brake fluid reserviour with antifreeze and water and the engine with brake fluid.
I will not be hesitating to ask further details from pepesr (and pepesr_1 for that matter...), I simply won't. The problem is not that not enough words are provided in a response, it's that listening and acting on clear guidance is not occurring, not something I know how to change in others apart from by showing them the net effect.
In the words of ChumleyEX, the situation is 'crazy'!
As many times in the forum, your answers, Flying Kiwi, are starting to be agressive and useless.
Contacts have been very well cleaned (correctly and thoroughly).
More over, the SIM connectors are in the other half of the unit that works with the new motherboard.
Asuming by default that I am so incompetent and that I have not gone through all this forum to check all this compatibilities is quite arrogant.
-----
I continue to thanks all other people that has really the intention to help.

I haven't check yet. But I think it's same. I bought it at 01/2008 as brandnew phone.
2 week ago, I take it to a service shop to re-weld the SIM tray pins. At that time, the phone is good. After one day, it became fault as the time before welding.
More information:
- When it good, the signal can be found when the Windows starting (the LED is blink) with any SIM.
- When it fault, with usable SIMs, the signal can be found after Windows started some minutes. With un-usable SIMs, the phone says: No SIM.
- All Sims above are good SIM (tested on other phone)
Sorry for my bad English.

NEWBIE ALERT! FIRST POST.
My phone is a Siemens sx-66. Its really frustrating me to the point that I am ready to toss this thing into the lake.
I am very grateful that this forum exists. I have spent many hours reading the WIKI site for Blue Angel and other valuable collections of data. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.
I am looking for a fix for my phone. Here's the details.
My sim card is an AT&T Wireless card. My phone is a branded, Unlocked Cingular phone. AT&T was bought out by Cingular. My previous phone (motorola v600) broke so I bought this phone on Ebay, popped my Sim in and it worked.
I upgraded the ROM and here is the current report from DeviceData.
Model No: PH20B
Minor Version: B1
Language Code: WWE
Operator Code: XGULA
ROM Version: 1.33.10
Extended ROM Version: 1.40.125
Radio Version: 1.02.10
Minor: 02.10
I should change my Sim card to a new Cingular one, but I have chosen not because the plan I have with the former AT&T Wireless has a TON of minutes and Cingular doesn't have a plan that large. My contract is now up and I am hoping to renegotiate my plan with the business dept.
Here's what my phone is doing: I can be in the middle of a call, using my bluetooth earpiece ( I am always using the BT) and all of a sudden, the phone will soft reset. A few times, it will even hard reset. The hard reset is a major Pain in my ARSE because then I have to re-enter all my internet access settings and email settings again. This usually takes about 45 minutes of my time.
The thought just occurred to me that the problem could be my battery. I don't know enough to know if I need an additional software upgrade or not. Advice is appreciated. I am afraid of upgrading to WM5 because of the bugs that people have complained about.
I love my PDA phone. It keeps me more organized than I've ever been. Unfortunately, the recent problems have caused more problems than they solve.
Best Regards,
ArtisticStain

Thia ia why I upgraded to WM5, but...
The problem is probably a loose battery connector, using a case helped my phone a lot (kept the battery from coming loose), however, you really might want to go with a WM5 install, the worst of the WM5 issues are:
1. Slow phone ringing (there are patches that are supposed to fix this)
2. Some software won't let you become a "registered user" because they do goofy stuff with the registry and your system doesn't respond in their goofy expected way anymore
3. Some people have issues with Blue Tooth, I just wanted features that didn't work in 2003 either, so this is really a non issue (IMO).
Good luck, I still think that you should really consider WM5.
umm... i actually had this problem at one point, but i honestly doubt i had the same one you do. With mine, all the screws under the battery were loose, and everytime i would shake the phone, or anything like that, it would hard reset. I doubt thats it, but check the screws under the battery... maybe some of them are loose?

try to reflash to win2003se or pick a snazzy wm5 from our boys here, I have the same model.
we had extra 2400mAh batteries laying around so we popped them in these models, definitely a must.
I suggest an aluminum alloy/magnesium case they sell online for about $20US if you can find it, lined with neoprene

Thanks for the info. I contacted cingular and they said they were having technical issues with converting or upgrading stuff.
I'll let you know if I change my mind about upgrading to WM5 but for now, I'll stay put. Upgrading will be my last resort.
I received my V1615 the other day and was initially chuffed to bits, the phone looks great, most of the functions you could ever need but my delight was sort lived.
I have loads of issues with the device and have called Vodafone to ask if they had any ROM updates, the man on the end of the phone tells me that the phone comes with WM5 and that no updates were available for the unit!! I said it cam with WM6 and he told me mine must have slipped through somehow.
The problems I have are mainly
Unusable camera
Phone Lockup
Wifi Poor and will not work with any Netgear wifi points
Can not turn on TouchFlo (can’t find how!)
Are these common issues with the Kaiser or should I be looking to get the unit replaced? I don’t mind holding on for a updated ROM
My current Rom version is 1.56.161.4
Any suggestions would be great
Hi,
i have had the V1615 since launch day and have none of the problems you mention.
WIFI connects to just about every make of WIFI i come across, i am computer engineer so use it on may types, so far DLINK, Belkin, Netgear, Zyxel and a few cheapo non name brand ones, with and without security and all work fine.
Camera works brilliant on mine, takes good pictures and unlike my old Vodafone 1605 does it in just about any condition, video is good as well.
Phone had never locked on me, had one problem after doing a Tom Tom install but they was fixed by a reload.
When you say touchflow assume you mean on the contacts and Ie scrolling around page ?.
Sounds like a duff one, have you tried a hard reset and reload ?
I have a 1 week old v1615 and it works fine. recommend you send it back to vodafone and ask for a replacement
mine is also running well...
I've had mine for about 2 weeks and I'm absolutely delighted with it. For a change, I think Vodafone have been thoughtful with the software they bundled onto it (Sprite Backup and TomTom 6 being just two).
Same here. HAd mine for a week or so and it's doing great. And it seems that guy you talked to doesnt know anything. The phone shouldnt come with WM5 but with WM6 as everyone elses.

Hi there,
For some time now I these weird symptoms if I place my Kaiser in my backpack next to my Blackberry...
- It won't come back when pressing the power button
- But status LED is still blinking the usual way
- Trying to call it will just reach the voicemail

I tried different ROMs (initially 6.0, and now 6.1)
Any idea or comments?
Thanks

Usually they give a refurb model (and not as "nice" as mine)
i agree with you - i dont like taking my new toys to repairs i always get the paranoia against them
dude ur phone is well - i experienced this in the past with several phones... keep an open eye if it happened in another situation that does not involve another device - then its time to call the bad repair guys

Yeah, it's really a weird thing ...
Problem is I have to keep both device in my backpack (BB8820 work device, and TyTN II personal device)
The most weird point is that the Kaiser was able to work smoothly for months in the same situation... Don't know if it's since I install the HardSPL, or a different radio than the stock one (WM6.0 versions)
I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM + AUTO) depending on your requirements.
Also read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2 where the resolution was to get a new SIM.
Obviously this only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.
Here are some of my personal experiences with the HTC S730 (Wings) smartphone that I bought almost two years ago and have been using ever since every day:
To start off I got it as a 2-year contract for a reasonable price. It had all the necessary abilities I could ever ask for from a phone (push-email, WiFi, qwerty slideout), highly customazible with 3rd party software and it wasn't even sim locked when I got it. In the first week or so however I started to notice it slowing down periodically and being unable to launch new programs. I ran out of RAM in awkward situations, having to use the task manager or restart my phone as it became unresponsive. I found ways to overcome this problem by limiting my open programs with Oxios Closeapps or switching to 3rd party applications such as the Opera Browser that can be shut down instead of leaving it on the background.
A word of warning: The first phone bill was a bit of a shock (~200€) for gprs data transfer. Windows Mobile prefers 3G connectivity over WiFi it seems. Remove the gprs settings if you don't use them, or get an unlimited dataplan like I did. It only costs 9€ where I live.
After the first month I started to notice tiny scratches and cracks in my phone's housing even though I'd been super gentle with it. I even bought a cushioned leather case for it to keep my phone from more harm. The cracks have become more noticeable over time and I must say the building materials are very sketchy, unlike the aluminium case my Nokia E-series phone used to have.
One major applaude for HTC is it's durability and ability to resist WATER(!). I submerged the phone into a lake while fishing, picked it up and instantly removed the battery (this is horrible!). I let it dry in peace for two weeks, left alone in a bowl of rice to get the humidity out of the circuits. The water indicator sticker below the battery got wet and colored (barely) so that's a bad thing for warranty if it decides to stop working some day soon.
I've had some trouble with the D-pad taking multiple keypresses from just one click, and got it solved by using the keyboard fixing "tool" found on this forum, decreasing the response time of D-pad's keypresses to 200ms.
Regarding to the GPS "rumors" found on this site whether or not it functions with the right rom/settings/registry entries my word is: YES. There is a gps chip in this phone. YES. It does work. Sluggishly without an antenna, but I got it to work with 100% accuracy inside our office building. I've done no additional tweaks to my phone other than flash the Alcaline 6.1 ROM using guides found on this forum. I used Google Maps with GPS strolling down the streets and checking my location periodically on a Tom-Tom, comparing the results. Hope you can get it working too.
Please, share your own experiences about HTC S730 or ask questions that I might answer from this phone as I believe I have a fair amount of experience with it.
GPS?

Hay ignatiuscheese,
Are you serieus? do you have an preproduction or an regular wings? I have a wings with xuque's rom. can you give me a link to a tutorial for enabling my GPS, or make an own one. Can you remember how you did it?
I hope you can help me enabling GPS.
Greets,
Niels
Hey Niels, thanks for replying.
I have a regular wings, bought from Finland as a 2-year contract with a local operator so definately not a pre-production model. I do believe there is variation between different operators and their phones, some phones might have different chipsets but mine just so happened to be GPS-enabled.
As mentioned before I used the Alcaline 6.1 rom found on this site (it's a sticky thread) and installed Google Maps. I checked the "Use GPS" box and vóila: working gps. As mentioned it's very sluggish, only 1-3 satellites at a time at chosen locations but works. Haven't tried any secret registry tweaks or additional flashing.
GPS
Hi,
Could you please test the gps/googlemap without the sim card? In order to discard that the software is using your gsm data instead the gps data.
Many thanks in advance,
hi Guys,
i have been scouring the site and i have found lots of info on getting a quick fix on the GPS and which radios work best, i have downloaded lots of radios, tried different roms but no matter what i try, I cant get a fix PERIOD. i have also googled to try and find out if the GPS itself is a replaceable part on the tilt but no info seems to be available, having said that I would definately appreciate any input, i have tried stuff like GPSgate, GPSproxy, HTC GPS tool, GPSTest, VisualGPSce, QuickGPS, QuickPosition and NONE of those tools has shown me what a GPS fix looks like, I have seen up to 8 satellites on the HTC tool, they show up and dance around for about 1 or 2 minutes and then dissapear never to be seen again until after a reboot of the phone.
i have also borrowed a friends Tilt, and placed them side by side, and watched his phone get a fix in about 1 minute, and then stuck around for about 20 more minutes and then finally end the test in frustration.
is the GPS a replaceable part?
any input would be greatly appreciated
Phone: AT&T branded TILT
ROM:Ultimate-X2.V11.Premium (wm6.5)
RADIO:1.71.09.01
Protocol:25.75.40.02.eMoH
My advice to you would be to just keep trying to find a radio ROM that works for you. I recently got a Tilt, and I flashed some odd 5 or 6 radios before I found one that enabled WiFi and GPS for me. Ironically, its the one you are currently using xD.

No but the antenna sticker (with fragile embedded tracks) is. That said, you mentioned you still get greyed out satelite details showing and changing in your nav software so that may not be an issue (you've not mentioned if this sticker above the battery bay has been disturbed at all). If you are worried about whether your new setup has contributed to the problem, the answer is simple, was it working OK before you changed the ROM/Radio or SPL from original WM 6.0?
Oh and welcome to the forum illspamu - I hope you don't live up to your name

@ashakur
thank you, havent given up I know there is a radio out there for me.
@Flying Kiwi
thanks
I am a total newb to this, so this info about the antena is something i need to check, it is worth mentioning that i did buy this tilt with a broken screen so someone probably used it for a hockey puck, its been a great phone minus the GPS but I recently became demanding and want to see it working.
the GPS has never worked beyond showing me some satelites for a couple of minutes and its been the same regardless of ROM/Radio.
about the handle, worry not, its amazing how an email address like that can keep spammers off
