Phone keeps turning off during calls - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

As title says, my phone randomly turns off during calls. Usually the long ones that go for around 10 minutes, the phone will power off. The battery isn't dying either. It lasted a while when I used a bluetooth headset but it happens frequently when using the phone as a handset to my ear.
More info that might help:
Radio: 1.71.09.01
ROM: NGY Professional 1.1
SPL: HardSPL 3.56
Anyone know a solution?

But its connection through the terminals may be. Time to use a cotton bud soaked in contact cleaner or IPA on the little gold battery terminals and the spring pins that connect with them. Do you get the same powering off problem if the phone is being powered through the USB port during the call?

I don't think so, i will have to try that but I might need a longer USB cord haha.. when i have my phone connected to the handsfree via USB it works fine, when connected to my bluetooth handsfree it also works fine. Just when it's in my hand it stops working fine and will cut out. Happens quite often after 5 minutes and almost surely in a 10 minute call.

If it works ok when powered via usb but not the battery, look at the battery

So it's a power supply problem when being powered from the battery, rather than the usb port. FWIW I quite often make calls on my TyTN II while it's powered through the USB port via a mains charger - on the train, even at home as it's a way to use up remaining 'free' minutes. Good luck with your battery terminal cleaning.

Hmmmm... are you sure it's powering off? Or is it just blanking the screen (i.e. going to sleep). Is the call getting cut off? You said yes in your note. You also imply that it's happening at roughly the same time (e.g. 5 mins OK, but 10 mins its cut off)
If it works OK when you're on BT, then it's most likely not a battery problem, but it could be a setting on your phone related to the screen.
Do you have Advanced Config installed? Have you used it to shut off the sleep modes during a phone call?

I interpreted BT Handsfree to mean the phone is being powered eg in a car cradle, while the BT headset is being used but I understan this is ambiguous. Yes if the phone is NOT being powered while BT is being used, this throws a whole new light on things. The simplest way to get to the bottom of things is for seefu to make a long call while the phone is plugged into the mains charger and see if it cuts off. If so, the problem is likely down a path other than the battery and a search in the custom ROM thread may come up with results (assuming the problem isn't also evident under the original OEM ROM).

You're pretty much describing the same exact problem that I experienced recently.
My calls would always just die randomly and then I would have to power back up and go through the whole bootup and whatnot. It was such a pain.
I researched it and came to the conclusion that it was a battery issue and ordered a replacement OEM type one on ebay for ~$10 w/ shipping.
Replaced the battery, got in a full charge and the problem is fixed.. It no longer shuts off.
I'm pretty sure that this would solve your problem. It is worth a shot, and even if it doesn't work you're only out $10!
Good luck

If the problem was simply that the terminals weren't spotless, a terminal clean may have been all that was required but it never hurts to have a spare battery. If you still have the old one you can try cleaning the terminals to see if it goes back to performing reliably. I had the same problem on my old Nokia 5110.

I will try the terminal cleaning although it appears to work ok when i used the wired handsfree which means it is not charging through USB while in the call..
And yes, it was run off USB while the BT headset was used. So I'll clean the terminals and tell you how it goes.
Thanks for your input

Isopropyl Alcohol - click the link to read more at wikipedia. If you go into an electronics shop and tell them what you want to do, they should be able to provide the right product just for the purpose (here in the UK Maplin do a fine tin of contact cleaner, perfect for the job). Ensure you don't spray or apply it directly but use a cotton bud.

Have you looked up in the ROM tread for simulare cases? Could be ROM sickness, by that I mean something is causing the phone to hang. If you are really unsure about this, whether it is the BT or phone you should reflash to stock (whit all the given instruction) give it a good 2 weeks try. A custom ROM can work flawless on installation but after a certain time it can start to cause hickups and other problems.

I am having this same issue. It originally started happening after upgrading to an AthineOS ROM (I can't remember which). It worked fine for a while then suddenly started doing the same thing with cutting off phone calls (however my phone wouldn't restart unless plugged in). I upgraded later to HyperDragon IV Lite. The problem is *partially* fixed. I still get the phone randomly shutting off during a call, however I can restart it without being plugged into the wall now. Also, when the phone is going to shut off, it starts to get a lot of static like I don't have good service (I have max service where I live) right before shutting off. Also, when shutting off, the screen tends to flash a couple times before it powers down.
Long story short, I have the same issue and I'm going to try pulling the battery and cleaning it. I'll let you know the results.

What radio are you guys on? And what country? Sometimes that is the problem. I am a flashing machine theese days (trying to catch up on the new stuff), I gladly take the problem for a spin

as in first post, the eMo radio 1.71.09.01 but sometimes on 1.59.44.02 or the 1.59.46.12 and it still happens in each. those are the best for my area that i have found so far hence using those 3.
Also, i just changed to AthineOS 22 jan rom just now. see if the problem keeps happening, as also stated in first post, i am changing from NGY Pro 1.1

SoftKeys, Sound, Keyboard... ALL DONT WORK

So, I just started having this problem as of a few days ago.
I was driving to San Jose using TomTom on my Tilt and everything was good until all of a sudden it lost signal. It happens time to time and I usually just quit out of TomTom and go back into and it works again.
This time I quit out of TomTom and was back at the home screen (I'm using the Dutty Series). After that, the backlight seemed to dim and the phone wasnt working correctly.
1) Back light was on
2) The soft keys weren't working
3) The power button would put the screen to sleep but wouldnt wake it up or turn it off, i have to reset the phone or take the battery out
4) When sliding the keyboard, no sound works like normally
5) The keyboard doesnt work
6) I can't receive phone calls or texts
It did this for about 5 hours and went back to normal. And now its doing it again. Anybody have any suggestions. I've already tried taking out my memory card in hopes of deactivating TomTom but no luck. Anything helps Thanks.

just a basic suggestion, try reflashing your radio or rom.
Well did a hard reset on the phone and everything works now. The only thing is that it no longer charges.
the phone has been dead for the whole day and has been on the charger but the battery isnt charging. i dont know if its the charger itself, the battery or the phone.
Could be a damaged usb port.
Please note that most of the USB car chargers will brick the tilt. Mainly because they don't have sufficient power regulation (and the phone has none) so spike voltages from your alternator brick your phone.
We've seen user after user who has bricked phones using USB chargers. There's only a very select few that don't put the phone at risk.
It's entirely possible you've fried the charging circuitry of your phone. Although swapping a new battery in may save you, if it is simply a dead battery or a fried battery.
Good luck!

wow, thanks, looks like I will never use a car charger.
i guess there is some advice for this:
1) Do not have your Kaiser plugged in to the dc outlet before you start/turn off your autmobile
2) If you have an older vehicle, make sure you unplug the tilt from the charger before using your power windows or high beams
3) If you power anything else through a dc outlet make sure you don't start it or turn it off while the tilt is plugged in as well
normal spikes of electricity in automobiles
I never use a car charger. I don't even own one for my Tilt.
It was charging fine prior to Sunday night. I had actually charged it to about 80% before I left my hotel to make the drive back from San Jose to LA. During that trip is when many of my problems started.
When I got back to LA i tried charging it and nothing was working.
WOW thanks guys for the warning, i used a car charger alot and well now i'm not going to. this phone is like my child(if my child was a super smart machine that had GPS, ran like a computer and could call people when i say call *name*) i'd never do anything that i thought could hurt her

Tilt Randomly Turns Off

I've had my Tilt for about a year now. I just had to replace a cracked screen about a week ago. It now randomly turns offs, usually when there is some sort of data connection like surfing the web or talking on the phone. It seems if I'm just messing around w/basic features on the phone it stays on just fine. The battery is at a good charge. I've noticed that when I have the phone plugged in it works fine, but as I said the battery is showing a charge of 50%+ when this happens. Anyone know what this could be? Thanks.
Hmmm,
My guess would be that you did not 'stick it together' correctly after changing the screen - seems like a hardware part is in contact with another where they shouldn't! When turning on your wifi or other hw modules, your device might experience a power leak or overload through that - can finally also be the screen. Was it an original HTC KAISER part?

This has been happening to my Tilt as well. While unplugged on a phone or internet connection it just shuts off. Sometimes it take several attempts to get it to boot again or I need to plug it in to get it to boot at all. I was wondering if it was a faulty battery but I haven't tried replacing it yet.

Dirty battery contacts, or contacts not making sufficient contact because they're too low, might cause that.
I had this problem two ways- WM 6.0 with spbshell would just lock up and turn off, could never figure out why. Removed spbshell and it was good.
Lately I had a problem where a 6-month old Seido extended battery was shorting itself out when I would grab the phone or twist it a certain way. Dropped old battery back in it, no issues.

This is exactly what mine does. The battery fits a little lose on the left side, but the contacts on the right side are touching and intact.
randomly turns off
im having the same problem. my phone just turns off when im on the phone or if im texting someone. It even turns off when i push my power save bottom on. I need help.
I have the same problem. What I've noticed is that it doesn't do it when it's plugged to the charger, but it turns off when it's running with the battery only.
My findings:
- Using it like a PDA no problems running on battery (no using any phone function)
- On a call, when it's running on the battery it turns off
- Using a Data conection or Wi-Fi when it's running on the battery it turns off
* On a call w/charger plugged in no problems
* Using Data or Wi-Fi w/charger plugged in no problems
I hope that's a battery related issue. I'm going to try to replace the battery and let's see if it fixes the problem.
Problem solved. New Battery
Tilt Battery
I'm having the exact same problem as jqman, I've had my Tytn II for more than a year now, and it has been great. For the past month it has started turning off randomly with no forewarning. I can charge it all day, the second I take it off external power and try to do anything from surfing the web to taking a call it just randomly shuts off. It may be a battery problem, because it sometimes shows low battery power immediately after disconnecting from the charger, but there was nothing that led up to this. The battery was fine one day, and then the next completely gone. Also, there is no oxidation on the battery contacts, and it seems in tightly (not loose at all). The back cover is also very steady, as I've had a plastic casing for the past year, and only recently took it off because of this problem.
I find it hard to be believe that it's a software or hardware problem - just suddenly after a year. I hard reset the phone and updated the ROM and it's still happening.
Any ideas/suggestions? Should I buy a new battery (is one year a al battery life)? Are generic batteries as good as the originals or should I only get the original Dynapack?

Phone freezes after being charged all night?

99% of the time, i charge my phone over night when im sleeping, however everytime i do this i wake to find my phone has frozen. This means anyone who has tried to call or txt me during the night hasnt gotten through. The phone rings for them, but at my end the phone just stays blank.
This is the only time my phone freezes (within limits) and the fact it happens every night without fail seems a tad odd.
My old kaiser did the same but iv started to get a tad fed up of this, does it do the same for anyone else? Or does anyone know a way around it?
Im running Dutty's 6.1 hybrid, on UK t-mobile.
cheers guys

Is it plugged into a PCs USB port, using a mains charger (if so is it the official one supplied with the device)? Have you tried swapping charging methods (or chargers if you have a spare) to see if the problem goes away? Do you have a spare battery you can swap in?
thanks for the response!
Its an offical HTC charger plugged into the wall, and as far as i can tell charging it via the computer is fine, but then again i dont leave it plugged into the computer for 12 hours.
I dont have second battery to try but the fact that this is a totally new phone & battery and i had this problem with my old phone aswell. iv also swopped the chargers around and it still happens.
are you in wifi mode
Sometimes when I leave the wifi mode on it will freeze, make sure the wifi is off at night. Hope this helps.
Cheers
cheers, wifi is always off though!
Kind of bugging me, especially is id like to use the alarm on my phone, but im too hesitant incase phone freezes & it doesnt go off.
Time to give it an overnight charge from the PC and other tests

The next step then is to restore the phone to an 'as new' state in terms of software/ROM/Radio/spl etc (unless others with the same setup can verify this problem never happens for them) and charge it for the normal period solely via USB from a PC. You mentioned you don't normally recharge the phone this way for long periods but try it for a night or two just to see if this makes a difference. It would also help to rule out power fluctuations as a contributing factor if you could power the PC via a UPS. As this has happened now with 2 phones and 2 mains adapters, its extremely unlikely to be a hardware fault and more likely something associated with the configuration or your neigbourhood power supply. If it locks up most nights, take a note of the time displayed on the phone when that happens - is it the same time on each occasion?
What happens if you leave it on charge while in flight mode with all 'options' such as wifi, bluetooth etc turned off (just for diagnostic purposes)? If you can get it to charge properly without locking up in a basic state, then if you reintroduce any differences one by one and test after each change, you'll find the culprit.

Reboots after I remove the batter

What the heck is going on?
I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with the ROM, because it did this with the factory ROM, Manila 2d and now WM6.5.
I turned the phone off, unplugged it, removed the battery. I put the battery back in, replace the cover and press the power button. Nothing happens. I plug the phone back in to the wall charger and put power, it turns on....for about 3 seconds then reboots and it would seem that it will do this for as long as I let it go. If I unplug the phone while this is going on, it will die.
The last time this happened, it took it about a day and a half to sort itself out. It almost seems like its a battery issue.
Any thoughts or ideas?
UPDATE!
I took the sim card out of the phone for a few seconds and the phone seems to be working now.... But its been up and running for about 20 minute now with no sings of acting up.

tried to charge the pda all night the light stayed orange and never turned green indicating full charge. tried hard reset and when it goes in to prepare rom it shuts off like dead battery. when i plug in the pda to charge battery and then turn on the phone it freezes on splash screen. if i turn on phone then plug in to charge it acts like i havn't pluged in charger. is it the pda or battery?
I am not 100% sure on this, but to me it sounds like the battery.. and that is a MUICH cheaper option to test out... unfortunatly you ahveto wait for shippng typicalyl unless you have a friend who has the same phone.. I got 2 backups and a stand alone charger now... The other option could be your USB port... I have not heard this specific problem with them.... but I am a PC tech and have seen very simmilar problems with laptops... Usually the first think to for is the power port... Just like out phone, if the device is not on a flat surface and such when it is plugging it, it tweaks the port and it eventualyl breaks... on laptops it is not uncommon that when plugged in, the LEF wil light up saying it is getting power to charge, but it enver charges the battery, and even sometimes can;t power up the full system.. .It sort of sounds like this is what you phone is doing as well.. .If that is the problem the stand alone charger would work (my son broke off his usb all together and now syncs via bluetooth and jsut changes batteries.. he has 3 himself as well) If you search online, you can usualyl find a kti with a battery or 2 and a charger/dockign station for under $20US total. Good luck!

tried bootloader and installed official att rom and never shut off. when it was finished with install same issues appeared. help
For anyone facing this issue I would not recommend wasting money on a new battery as this issue has been around with few users since the Kaiser "Tilt" first came out and I've never seen ANY reports that a new battery fixes this. People have bought new batteries, fully charged their battery from a docking station, tried their friends fully charged battery all with the same result. I had this power down issue a Looong time ago my first week in with the Kaiser and managed a fix and am using the same battery now. Although it seems the battery is not being fully charged it's important to leave it charging until you'd assume it's fully charged and get into bootloader mode and flash an official htc Tytn 2 rom. It should flash completely, and the fact that it does not die immediately as on normal boot indicates it is not the battery but the rom. It did take me the whole afternoon of Flashing, recharging and repeating before it finally kicked in. Also, from reading older posts, it seems most if not all users like myself fixed this by flashing the older official htc wm 6.0; worth a shot at least.

Yup, that is what I had to today (I hard reset, actually), with barely enough battery life to do this.
Then the bloody unit came up and was charging - amazing, really!
(Was using the official HTC 6.1 upgraded WindowsMobile OS)
here is my 2 cents....
I owned five Tilts, replaced four of them with warranty issues ... so i have faced this dilemma on at least two of them.
First see if the USB tongue is loose. To do this try to gently tap it with the stylus. If the tongue inside the USB port is loose then you will be facing rebooting and other issues and troubles in the future. The USB tongue gets used and jerked every time you connect your device to your PC or wired headset. If you are still under warranty and the USB connector tongue is loose I recommend returning the phone ( if you still can) and getting a replacement. There is no easy fix for a loose USB connection tongue as i have taken one apart and it is very difficult to repair or replace and very easy to mess it up further.
So, my advice to all Kaiser owners... be careful when plugging and unplugging your phones through the USB. Do it gently as the connectors are very fragile.
For those that have the above issues, I recommend using a separate battery charger tray, avoid plugging the USB as much as you can, and if you must, then administer extra care. The rebooting will stop if you plug the USB cable to the device and move it up and down a hair then holding steady. And most likely you will not get a full charge or even a partial charge. The biggest culprit to this problem is car chargers, and second, is inserting the stylus by mistake (when it is dark and hard to see) in the USB port instead of the Reset hole by accident.

Really Odd Issue

Alright, I noticed about 3-4 days ago that I was waking up in the morning to almost no charge gained on my phone. I figured my computer turned off or something and my phone just didn't get charged via the USB port. I've now realized that when using specific USB cords (Only one out of 5 that I have works without this issue at the moment), my phone charges for about 5 minutes and then goes into this weird mode where it displays the clock time as a screensaver sort of screen and it stops charging my phone WHILE being plugged in.
As soon as I unlock my phone, I see a steering wheel icon at the top left in my notifications that says my phone is in car mode. Before I can pull down to see what it is or go into the menu settings to see if I can disable it, it turns off and disables again. I went through my ROM toolbox and found no signs of "Car" or "Car Mode" applications installed since I remember seeing "Car" in most rom installations.
It's becoming very frustrating because most times, I plug in my USB cord and my phone begins to charge and then 2-3 minutes later it just stops and goes into that mode. Sometimes it's instant and sometimes it won't work at all. I don't think it's an internal phone problem though because I have a cheap USB cord I found in my closet that is flawless and doesn't bring me this issue.
What could this be? Is my HTC One on it's last legs or what? I don't have my upgrade for another year so I'm really hoping this isn't too serious. The USB cords I do own are in great condition and wouldn't all suddenly stop working at once, so I see no reason to blame those. If anyone is wondering, I'm using CyanogenMod 11 right now, but this is a fresh installation and previously was using a very stable ARHD 6.1 GPe ROM. I also don't think the rom's I'm using have anything to do with it.
I don't know much about this stuff so I'll just leave some other information if it's needed. I have the SuperCID thing done, my phone is rooted and my bootloader is unlocked obviously along with having S-Off. I'm also using TWRP's latest version.
Any help would be really, really appreciated...
Also, to add onto what I said about the screensaver/car mode:
When I unlock my phone while being plugged in and the car mode turns off, my phone doesn't go back to charging unless I un-plug the USB cord and re-plug it in. This is when it usually begins to stop charging seconds after putting it in.

It may be a kernel problem, try a different ROM.
Also try cleaning the USB port with compressed air.

I've been researching it and found a few similar issues and apparently there's no fixes for it. I'm more or less stuck with this for another year until my upgrade. There's a small fix for it but it's a pain in butt to remember:
I have to turn my HTC One off, plug it into the USB for charging and then turn it on and it'll charge correctly.
I've also noticed a major decline in battery life as well. I went from 78% to 71% in 10 minutes a bit ago. Really disappointing seeing as how I've already done so much to this phone I probably couldn't even sell it let alone have a conversation with HTC about it since I've killed any kind of warranty for it so badly.
Damn damn damn damn damn.

Well, if u still got warrany and the phone is working, u can still claim warranty by going back to full stock.

I've had the phone for over a year and I don't have warranty. Would there be a manufacturer warranty for this?
I guess this issue isn't fixable and I'm just screwed. Any suggestions how I could get a new phone without an upgrade for a good deal or something? God damn it.
