Did i brick it ? - Touch HD Windows Mobile ROM Development

OK i think i ****ed up bigtime.
I was on HSPL, and at first i flashed a stock rom.
After that i flashed DUtty's rom and it went ok.
It booted up with green screen problem and loads of locks and really really slow. After that i tried to use uspl but i was getting connection problems. After that i thought i should go to 1.15 stock spl and so i flashed that one, in order to use uspl. But the problems still persist, and now i cant revert back to a previous cooked rom.
Any suggestions ?

Use Manually Bootloader
Go back to stock spl, first flash stock rom, use sspl manual turn olinex and flash stock spl and then u can hspl again.
Hope it solves the prob. Just take a look at my Grafik Problem thread!

Hi,
Why, Windows 7 has the same drivers like Vista???
Can You express more crearly?

i flashed on Win 7 (build 7077)... i had to roll back the HTC USB Sync driver as explained in many threads about flashing the latest HD ROM v 1.56. i think some of our fellow members are not following all the steps to flash with the new ROM/SPL.

Read the instructions thorougly. If you cannot say that you understand 100 % of what the instructions tells you, read them again or do some research.
After following these steps you will almost certainly have a much better experience with custom ROMs.

i tried reverting the drivers but it is simply not working. i am thorough and i do read the details.

I had no problems with the drivers. I just followed the correct procedures mentioned in the wiki and post#6 of Duttys v2.8 rom
Have you tried rebooting pc afterwards and pressing F8 as per the instructions to help load them?

i flash on windows 7 7068 almost 10+ times already with no issue , using custom ruu.

Same here. Use Windows 7 (7068) as my only OS and I've been flashing 20+ roms without any problems.

The instructions for all the different flashing methods are a big mess if you ask me.
There is no red thread, they all just blend together in a big mess and leave out answeres to simple questions that would clearify stuff for newbies.
The more i read the long pages of instructions the more confused i get.

I agree, they can be confusing, but once you have mastered it, you'll wonder what the problem was!
What exactly are you confused with? What steps have you taken? Where are you now in the process?

Don't worry about the phone it will be ok.
The steps are as follow:
1). Flash hardspl
2). Flash a stockrom
3). Flash USPL 2.5
4). With USPL on your phone flash to Dutty
To revert back to previous roms:
1). Flash hardspl
2). Flash your previous rom.

Im fine, thanx, I have flashed my phone twice without big problems.
But the second time I got really confused when i tried to really understand it and followed the instructions step by step, it just sent me in a loop between all the different pages.
A simple question and a simple answere in the ROM-thread solved my confusion then, and now I just ignore the ramblings in the instruction pages.

I have a question about this. As my HD was replaced (warranty) I don't know which version I have (O2 or HTC). My first HD was a O2 branded with 1.14.207 ROM, the replaced one (from the same supplier) came with the 1.14.407 ROM which is the official German HTC ROM. I've just tried to download the newly released ROM by HTC, but the site states that the new ROM is not available for my device (but I could at least register the device). Could be that this is because it's an O2 device or probably because the new ROM wasn't yet released in German?
So is it really important to flash exactly the stock ROM (as the CID has to fit) or is it okay - like Laurentius said - to flash any stock ROM? Don't wanna brick my device when upgrading to 1.54/1.56...btw...why one has to go to a stock ROM when upgrading to 1.5x afterwards? Is there a difference when upgrading from 1.14 to 1.5x instead of 1.19 to 1.5x? I didn't get it yet...
Thanks in advance,

Any stock rom should do it as Laurentius said

A lot of confusion has come about from these newer cooked 1.56 roms so I wrote a guide. If you still have confusion please read the guide in my signature
Windows 7 is also most definitely not an issue. Several of us here are using it successfully.

What exactly is hardSPL? USPL vs hardSPL

I apologize in advance if my questions are trivial and I am just dense.
I am pretty sure I've read through all the threads for "n00bs" but I still can't get a grasp of what exactly hardSPL does or is. I ran the search function and found that I don't NEED it per say and has claimed that it actually is "safer" to use USPL.
I own a Tmobile Wing (IPL > 4.xxx)
1. What exactly is the difference between USPL and hardSPL?
2. What are the limitations of either one.. will flashing a cooked rom without hardSPL cause problems?
3. I currently have flashed the newest Open Touch 4.0 and haven't had any problems at all (USPL), but I noticed in the thread for Touch-IT, it says that hardSPL is required. What does that mean exactly? If I flashed it w/o hardSPL.. will my wing crash/brick?
4. At some point, I'd like to sell the phone, so I don't want to do anything that is irreversible. My understanding was USPL is reversible, hardSPL is not?
5. I was on the verge of flashing the hardSPL but chickened out.
I installed the three cab files (canonyang.cab aserpolicy.cab disablesecurity.cab) but decided I wasn't ready to flash.
Will that cause any problems (installing the .cabs but not flashing)?
any help/input would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for all the n00b questions. Thanks
Essentially what you are doing is changing the Bootloader so you can install a different ROM regardless if it's signed.
USPL and HardSPL is a matter of having it done temporarely or permenantly.
USPL (temporary), is the safe route. This will allow you to Install one USPL capable ROMs per USPL. So if you're not a big flasher, and thinking about selling your phone in the near future, then you might want to stick to this method.
HardSPL (permenant), is the only TRUE way of bricking your phone. You will flash the bootloader for good so that you can constantly flash new ROMs without having to worry about flashing your bootloader of making sure it's a signed ROM. For heavy flashers, like myself, this is the ideal route.
HardSPL is reversible, there are some threads on how to do that. If I remember correctly, you have to flash back to a Stock T-Mo ROM.
Some ROMs require HardSPL because sometimes the cooks use different methods to flash ROMs onto devices other than ActiveSync (which is needed for flashing via USPL).
For example, ttran001's Open Touch V4.0 Micro ROM flashes onto your device using your SDCard, the phone is never connected to you PC so no opertunity to USPL. If it was not HardSPL'd, the ROM would be rejected. If it was, the flash would continue flawlessly.
I hope this answers your questions, and please, if I got anything wrong, correct me.

Oh and from what I understand, installing those cabs wont hurt your device if you dont HardSPL. I believe you can uninstall them from the "remove program" which can be found under Settings/System/Remove Programs.

what does that mean exactly?
perhaps I should start by asking the USPL acronym stands for - I've googled it and I couldn't find the right acronym.
From my understanding.. the only real difference (besides one uspl rom per uspl vs infinite - i'm still a little hazy on that) is that hardSPL allows for flashing outside of activesync?
thanks again... I swear I tried my best using the search function and reading
Well, correct me if i'm wrong, if you do not HardSPL, then you must USPL your device everytime you wish to flash your device. This will temporarely change your bootloader so it will allow you to flash a non signed ROM, a.k.a. an "outside" ROM. USPL capable ROMs, are ROMs that you can flash using USPL, therefore, ActiveSync.
Well there are two differences I guess... HardSPL, basically, allows for flashing outside of ActiveSync; and will allow you to flash any ROM as many times as you would like, once HardSPL'd.
As far as the acronym goes, I have NO clue lol. Never bothered to find out, I guess it would be helpful to know .

Technically then.. I could also flash any rom as many times as I want using USPL as long as I run USPL.exe? I read the flashing guide several times. The only difference I found was that you run USPL.exe and it goes through a loader instead of just running the RUU flaser. Is that right?
i apologize once again if I am being incredibly dense.
thanks again for putting up with my n00bness
there ya go! you got it. As you become more experienced you'll start to understand the need of HardSPL.
I was once a noob myself, so i understand where u coming from . Just glad I can help.

You have been a great help. I really appreciate it.
Wow I think this is the coolest thread I have read ...it is just awesome what the WWW has done for all of us and thanks for the info
Glad I can help
I can understnad the use of USPL but I would recommend the use of hard SPL if you are planning to flash multiple roms. Either way I think it is just a matter of whether or not you actually want to run the USPL everytime you want to flash a rom... Don't quote me on that.
Just to doublecheck myself....
If I use USPL method and hard reset my phone - will I have the stock rom or the flashed one?
if I understand correctly USPL will bring back the stock one after hard reset and HSPL the new one.
very sorry to ask this now..from what i get is there are 3 ways of turning ur phone from phone to super phone:
1. install .cabs
2.soft flashing
3.hard flashing???
am i rite??

Hi Brother,
Same problem with me i have also search every where but failed... no answer about Hard spl.Every body say do hard spl and search in fourm and so on. There was no proper guide what it is and how to do. i was really puzzel. Now i have come to know that axect what it is Hard Spl.
Hard Spl mean CID unlock. If you unlock CId of the phone its mean you have done Hard SPl. Without CID unlock you can not write ROM.
Thanks

I have a T-Mobile Wing. I hardSPL'd it, installed a custom ROM, then I used the RUU to flash the original ROM back to it. It doesn't show the CanonYang startup screen, but the SPL version is still 4.70.Yang. Is it still HardSPL'd?

You can always check in the bootloader screen (the RGB screen).
Even if you have a 4.70.Yang you still need the IPL to be higher than 4 to flash custom ROMs. That is what is important.
If you ever see any of these number's change, Run the HardSPL folder again.

USPL and HSPL do this for you so you are able to flash a rom or radio. Read this page from wiki. It'll help you understand
Follow cRaCKwHoRe's guide on how to flash (can be found in my signature). If you intend to do a lot of flashing I'd flash HSPL as its permanent whilst USPL is temporary and you'd need to re-use it before every flash to new rom or radio
Latest HSPL can also be found in my signature
Ah excellent thank you so much.
So can I flash straight to the newest 1.56 rom from my current version which is 1.19.61.1WWE on orange?
Or is there a stage in between I would have to do.
Thanks again.

Flashing from one HTC stock rom to another you don't need to use USPL or HSPL. But going to a cooked rom you do.
Answer to your query is it depends on route you take. If you go down the USPL route you'll need to follow cRaCKwHoRe's guide. Would take to long to explain and he as already done a very good tutorial on the subject. If you go down HSPL route, all you need to do is flash latest HSPL then 1.56 rom
That clears everything up. one last thing, which rom would you reccomend? I like the look of the enwer roms with WM6.
Thanks again much appreciated.

I'm currently testing Dutty's V3.4. His V3.3 is already released but I'd wait for the new release hopefully in a few days. Both are based on WM6.1. Alternatively their is so many good roms out there. I'd also recommend Davideuck, EnergyROM & L26_THDV2.2 (Laurentius26). All very good roms by very good cooks. Best thing would be to try each of them and make your own opinion

There are a few forms of unlocking but the bottom line is that you need to bypass the checking which is done in the flash process.
One way is permanat as done once no issues anymore - HSPL
Another is as and when you need - USPL.
Wiki has a walk through that needs to be upated but I thought still was useable.
Flash the new 1.56 shipped rom and then move on to cooked roms. (will help you by pass the greenscreen issue)

Sorry to hijack your thread futurama but I am having the same problem. Could you let me know how you did it
Thanks HDuser. Not sure if you know where I`m up to but originally I flashed my Orange 1.19.61.1 ROM with USPL and then flashed Duttys 2.7 1.56 based ROM which has given me the green screen problem. An earlier poster suggested I flash Olinex HSPL 1.54 to cure the problem. The problem I am having now is the phone refuses to sync with the PC. I have tried Vista and XP, the PC does not hibernate or sleep or anything, the phone is set to not switch off. It will usually sync on first connection but after a few seconds it will disconnect and therefore HSPL is reporting as being disconnected.
I have tried the earlier HSPL and HSPL 1.56 (as the ROM in bootloader screen is reported as being 1.56 and SPL is 1.14). I feel I`m going round in circles and its only a matter of time before I brick the phone.
I have read and re-read the wikis but I am now just getting more and more confused.
davemazo
Look the best way to approach any problem is to go back to the roots.
Flash a stock rom, find your own stock rom and refalsh it, then take it from there.
Your post is missleading and I have no idea were to sart. One issue is your PC ist does not Hibanate, not or go into sleep mode, at the saem time you are saying that you can't sync. Sounds like you have other problems and those other problems are making you have problems with your device.
Thanks HDuser. Sorry for confusing you, but I am now totally confused myself, Basically though the phone does not sync with the PC, I have tried 2 PC`s, with Vista and XP.
But back to your point about flashing stock ROM, I have tried a link in the wiki to download the one I need which is Orange 1.19.61.1 but the link seems to be broken and I don`t know where else I can get it. It doesn`t seem to be on the Orange website or HTC.

There is a part on the black stone wiki that mentions I need to CID unlock my phone. It says you need to do this before you can flash roms, I felt it wasn't clear that, all I needed to do was flash HSPL in order to allow me to put new roms on.
This is what I did.
1:Flashed HSPL olinex 1.14.
2:Flashed HSPL Olinex1.56
3:Flashed MIRI WM6.5 10.0WWE
only part I had trouble with, my phone wouldnt let me flash the HSPL at first, I had to use a manual thing that you launch on the device the it lets you flash the HSPL.

Some problems after I have flashed

Hi!
Today I've decided, after many reads to update my HTC Touch HD to a cooked ROM.
So I've followed this procedure and all was ok:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3625567&postcount=272
I choosed the EnergyRom Leo Standard M2.5.
So first thing, my screen is blue since the start, but it became ok if I just turn off and up the screen.
Second problem, after 1-2 minute of use, the screen doesn't respond anymore.
I said ok, and I tried another rom, the XannyTechROM Grid Leo, and same problems! What is wrong?
Can you help me?
Thank you!
Your problem is classic for not having the correct SPL. You need to flash 1.56 or greater. Please refer to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505377, and in the future post all questions there. Good luck!

Okay, so if I understand good, I must use HSPL instead of USPL?
You can also flash an official ROM with 1.56SPL and use USPL.
If I want to update to one in french, I absolutely need to use this one:
RUU_BlackStone_HTC_FRA_1.56.406.1_Radio_52.62.25.34_1.13.25.24_Ship.exe?
Because the download is very slow :S
I just finish to download and install the previous ROM, but it's written now SPL-1.54 in the boot loader, will it be enough?

Before flashing any rom based on 1.56+ you need to have either SPL 1.56.Olinex (using HSPL) or SPL v 1.15.USPL (Using USPL)
All this info can be found in dummies guide thread. No need for another.

Potentially Broken T.HD - Need help!

Hi All,
I have used the search function - but ended up getting confused.
I have a Touch HD that I bought in January of this year (2009) from Mobiles.co.uk (Carphone Warehouse) and is on the O2 network (UK).
I have been using Dutty's ROMs (both 6.1 and 6.5) for months now - and have always used USPL when flashing, using the SD card method.
Over the past 3 days, my HD has been playing up.
When it started, I was using Dutty's R7. The radio was 1.14.something.something. The device was working perfectly, and I was really happy with the ROM and the way the phone was working. I had installed NO other applications with the exception of a different taskbar and obviously SDKCerts.cab
First of all, HTC Sense stopped working - it would cycle between "Loading HTC Sense" and "Tap here to launch HTC Sense"
Then, when rebooting the device, it just hung on the "Smart Mobility" screen. I left it in case it just needed a while to boot, but nothing.
I had no other option than to hard reset.
It worked OK for a few hours, but then HTC Sense started to crash again. So I flashed a new ROM - Lost in Asia or whatever it is called.
Same symptoms.
I flashed Dutty's R7 back and also the new 1.17 radio.
No joy.
The phone also hangs for ages on the Smart Mobility screen - perhaps a full minute where as before, it used to be no more than 15 seconds or so.
The following is displayed on the "Smart Mobility Screen"
1.17.25.09
52.69.25.37H
1.59.Dutty
The bootloader screen (before running USPL) shows the following:
BLAC100 32M
SPL-1.54.0000
MicroP-BlackStone (LED) V6
So the question I'm asking - is... Is my phone suffering some kind of hardware malfunction, or is this a known and fixable fault that I somehow have caused?
If the phone looks like it is malfunctioning, how would I go about returning it to stock so that the CPWH repair centre do not know it's had an unofficial ROM installed?
I'd like to add that whilst I'm very PC literate, I'm no programmer and a lot of the stuff here is alien to me hence my confusion - I just know how to flash a new ROM etc.
Thanks to anyone that takes the time to help me - I'd be really thankful to anyone that helps me sort this - be it tell me how to fix the device, or tells me to take it back!
Thanks in advance & Regards,
Chris.
Will D/L and flash Dutty's R0 Holy Grail ROM and see if that makes a difference...
If you've been using uspl than it will still be the stock spl and thus you could try to load the stock rom from htc.com specially designed for the touch hd(blackstone). I've read and heard from a lot of people that after flashing several roms and even hard resetting afterwards, some bits and pieces stay behind and flashing an original stock rom will undo this. I don't think it's a radio issue. And another big thing if you use dutty R7 that's a 1.56+ rom so you should have the right uspl olinex software to load these roms, if you used older software then problems with colouring and other things will appear.

Thanks for the quick reply.
So is it perhaps better to revert to the original ROM before flashing a cooked ROM? I always Hard Reset twice after flashing as understand this helps.
OK - so the 1.56+ situation - I was under the impression that using the latest USPL (2.5) when flashing was OK? I have never had the colour problem... but perhaps if I'm flashing wrong then these problems could be to do with this?
Thanks again...
Chris
The Sense Manila has known bug that you need to press home to load it (sometimes).
For you case, I would suggest you to clean up your SD Card.
there may be several file that cause your system to freeze.
So, format your SD, hard reset.. and cross fingers.
Yes, It is better to revert to the original rom once in a while before flashing a new rom, if u used the latest uspl and the colours are ok, then you've done that right and it will probably be bits and pieces of old flashed roms floating around on the device.
Best to revert to stock rom and hard reset twice.
Afterwards flash the rom u want. If everything works again. U could hspl instead of uspl, hspl is more stable if u ask me. And you can go back to stock spl if you have waranty issues. there's a tut on that to in the rom section.

I forgot to mention - that was one of the things I did. Previously, I had loads of email folders from all the ROM installs.
Now I have a folder containing the useful CAB files that I need, and the ROM image file. Thats it.
It's only a 1gb card as my 8gb card gave up the ghost.
Thanks for the suggestion though and my apologies for not mentioning this in the initial post.
From reading the Dummies guide, am I right in thinking that in order to use a 1.55+ ROM (such as Dutty's Holy Grail R0) I only need to run USPL and then flash (as opposed to flash a newer SPL) as my stock SPL is already 1.54?

Thanks for this - I didnt realise the device would retain bits and bobs, and you may well be right in that things are getting corrupted in there!
Which is the best stock ROM to flash - is there a link to one? I looked on the Wiki and there seem to be loads... which will work on a UK T8282?!
Thanks again!

what do you mean hang for age?
1 minute is nothing if it turns out boot up.
There are chances that the nand flash needs to refresh and wasted some times. But it won't be forever.

there's an original rom on htc.com for blackstone just use that one.
hope it will turn out right for you
I thought I'm the only one who had this problem. Last Sunday my blackstone started to freeze on the smart mobility screen too. I flash 3 different roms because I thought its an rom issue with no luck. On Monday it even managed to hardreset itself after I waited for about 15 min in the smart mobility screen.
After that I flashed a stock rom and it seem to be fine by now.
But now I will flash a custom again, the stock one is so 6.1

Help!My Blackstone fails to accept a WM6.5 rom, as it used to the past!

Hi guys, I've been using the Energy roms quite often and I can say I did not fail to upgrade any of the updates. Today, my Blackstone "freezed" while I was surfing on the internet using opera, I took off the battery and I turned it on again but no success, so I decided to upgrade the rom (I was using the 25th Dec Rom). I followed the same procedure as always and when the installation ended the phone failed to boot. It reached at the stage where you are asked to enter the pin code, I typed it and then "nothing"! It kept frozen no matter what I was trying to do. I did several hard resets, I re-installed the latest rom (both versions) but nothing
Anyone knows how to fix this issue????
I need to say that in trying to fix this issue, I installed an old rom which was based on Windows 6.1 and the phone worked just fine, but the whole rom was so old, so I could not stay with that one. This means that the phone is not broken, right?
I also followed someone's here suggestion to go back to the original stock rom, hard reset and then install again the WM 6.5 roms. But again, this did not change anything. Is there a way to make the phone "accept" the WM 6.5 roms, as it used to accept them before???
Please help me cause I cannot live without this phone!!!
Thanks in advance for all those experts who are willing to share their suggestions with me!

Have you tried various wm6.5 roms, possibly as bad download? Obviously I'm assuming you have either HSPL on device or you re-used USPL before flashing rom?
Did you flash back to original stock rom & SPL? i.e. rom and SPL which was on device when you bought it?
I had the same problem on the same rom, flashed stock rom then back to energy's. Been working fine ever since
Did you do a hard reset after installing energy rom too?

Thank you very much for your response! I followed your suggestion to go back to the stock rom and spl and then flash cooked rom, although Energy roms still refused to install after all this procedure! I don't know why, because they have been working and installed just fine in the past. I suceed on flashing a Miris rom, not the latest one but an old one I had in my computer and fortunately it worked! So, according to the results of my experiment, my phone accepts WM6.5 roms, but not Energy roms! I will be waiting for an update of Energy roms to see if the new version will be accepted by my phone!!!
Thanks again for the assistance!

Thanks for the response, read what I wrote in my response to the other friend!
I got similar issues before, the phone just couldn't boot or hard reset itself after one or two days with many different 6.5 ROMs. Did an mtty task 29 then it looks good now for a week. If it still failed I would follow Fallen Spartan's suggestion to flash stock ROM+SPL.

hmmm, after returning to stock rom & SPL. What was your SPL in bootloader? Did you follow dummies guide afterwards and use USPL or HSPL before trying to flash NRG rom? Did you try a different rom? Whats your current SPL?
