Cool ways to use the GPS in the Kaiser

There are two apps that I have used that I must say make the GPS built into the Kaiser along with its data connectivity pretty cool. Of course, the GPS is a great tool for mapping software such as TomTom, iGuidance, Google Maps, MS Live Search, and others... but the possibilities of GPS in a connected device like the Kaiser can lead to many other great things. Two that I have found useful are Mobile Justice and 3d Tracking. Here is a quick description of what they are.
First, I have installed Mobile Justice which alerts you when a SIM card is changed and will send a text message to a number of your choosing when it is changed... for example it was stolen and a card was sent in. It can also send the current GPS location. In addition, you can send the device a text message with a keyword and request at any time, the current GPS location. You can also put a message on the device screen. I know people often cook this application into ROMs. I hope that someone does this for a future Kaiser kitchen. The other app that I have used that is kind of nifty is 3d tracking. It updates your GPS location in near real time to a website that you can use a PC to monitor. The mapping is done using Google maps. Very cool way to keep track of valuables such as your teenagers. ;-)

I think the latest is the GPS photo functionality that was discovered to be built in. We were talking about this functionality at work but in an actual camera. Little did I know that i would discover this same function active in my TyTn II

I did see that in the forums which just made the camera in the phone that much more useful. Very useful when on hikes or vacationing to take a quick snapshot. Sure, the camera on the phone is not a replacement for a high quality digital camera, but it is convenient and in outdoor light, does a pretty good job. Combined with the GPS tagging, it is fun too. I hope we get to see even more uses for the integrated GPS.

I am using Nokia's smart2go gps software in my Tytn-II and its working gr8, with Nokia's maploader u can download very detailed maps with very good databases particularly for middle-east.

Similar to your Mobile Justice product, here's one I saw the other day. Its kind of like LoJack for your phone:

The company I work for does gps tracking for sports (running, skiing etc). I won't post the link, as i dont want to be seen as advertising.
But its pretty cool to be able to see how fast you ski (57.2mph is my fastest so far).

Someone sent me a note on this site that does something similar to 3d tracking. I will try it out now to see how it works.

Here is another tool that has a description with features similar to WIMP (Where Is My Phone) and Mobile Justice. Has anyone heard of it or tested it before? It is called Ultimate Theft Alert and has GPS as an add-on option.

Basic use would be if you wanted to add pictures to a map (google earth i believe supports this) you take a picture and in geomarks your pic.
It is basically done by regedit - you can read more on this in this exact forum (should be on page one or two -- easy for us to say this while the kaiser forum is still fresh)

This is free for now it seems. I will try it out. Do you know if it is any different than 3d tracking? That one is free too.

Had a quick look t 3d tracking, reprion looks to do asimilar thing.
Both seem pretty cool anyway

Personal observation: There should be a standard for SMS messages whereby the GPS coordinates of the sender can be sent along with text or mms messages. This would be handy for location based services and when chatting with friends.

Somthing wrong with the GPS
Hi
There's something definitely wrong with the GPS happening from time to time.
Today, TomTom was off by nearly 1 kilometre using the internal GPS. Using BT GPS everything was fine.
After a restart: the location was spot on again.
It has happened to me 3-4 times now that the GPS is completely off the charts.
Wonder if this could be fixed with a Radio ROM update ..

Sorry to maybe possible hijack this threat a little. I am also using smart2go. But I can't download any maps to my MicroSD with the Maploader. It always complaint that there is no space in my card (which has 3.7GB free). How were you able to download the maps to your card?

PS. Never mind. I found out that Smart2Go probably has a problem with storage cards larger than 2GB as if I use smaller MicroSD cards, the Map Loader works fine. So the solution is to run Smart2Go with a blank 2G or smaller card, then copy the files to the 4G MicroSDHC. Then Map Loader works (with a size limit of 1.8G for map data).....

Some programs don't instal for me, WIMP did install however (haven't tested it yet) so my assumption would be some kind of security setting that is on when installing cabs, do you guys turn it off? (i remember there was a way to do this with the Hermes) or do these apps just install out of the box (per se)?
EDIT:
Looks like its some kind of problem when i transfer the file over via activesync to the card. I put it on via straight pc to another card and it installs fine.

Any personal GPS tracking programs to view on on the internet?

Hello, since most of us have a new found GPS, I would like to use those programs that allows you people to go to a certain website to see where you are, and find friends that are close by, etc. This is specially useful to use it with family and friends or kids, when we want to know where are they located.
so far I have found out 2 programs, (FREE)

I was wondering if anybody found any others besides of these programs, because both seems to be very buggy and/or not so accurate. (mologogo showed like I was somewhere in the Atlantic ocean close to Nigeria!!!!)
Anybody had successful results with these?. Are there any other programs that anybody uses, free or paid?

Next version of commmgrpro will include the posibility to send to CMP server Cell ID, operator and GPS coordenates (if available). In this way, with some weeks/months, the server will host a map of Cells (and operator) and GPS position in the world. So when the map is big then It wont be necessary to connect the gps. It will be enought to turn on the device. Then It will send the current Cell/Lac to the server and the server will convert it to geographical position. Then I will add buddy support, etc, etc and of course, posibility to see it using a web browser and google maps.

GPS mapping...

I would like to use the GPS on my phone to map my position on a static map or a jpeg. I don't want to use the web at all, I want to store my maps in static images and pull up the appropriate map and be able to find my position on that map
Does anyone know if this is possible and how it would be done?

I realize you want to be able to import maps, something you cannot do with BeeLineGPS (http://www.visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/BeeLineGPS), but I'd still strongly recommend the program. It does not do anything over the Internet but it does do just about everything one could do with GPS data. As far as getting some kind of reference of where things are on a blank map, you can import waypoints or mark them on your phone and you can export the movement you've tracked into KML (Google Earth).

i'm newbie on gps stuff so i would like a software that i can track my phone for an example... in every 30minutes the phone autorun gps send the coords to some place on internet or something and then turn off gps again... this on background and i can track on my pc at home or something... this is usefull in a robbery... can this be done? thx in advance ;P

I think you should take a look at GPStuner. It does a lot of things
- Maps can be downloaded from the phone, or from a computer and stored on memory card. (i currently have 50 JPG covering 200 sq km)
- It records your track, gives information about your current speed, altitude, average speed...
- You set up points aywhere on the map and it will lead you to them, or search nearby points. I use it for things that do not come on Tomtom, like bus stops, libraries or free WiFi hotspots
- You can save your track and open it on Google Earth
Another similar software is tracky, but I like GPSTuner more

chinomoreno, it's not polite to hi-jack a thread... start another with your question.

You can also use LEM's TrackMe, using it off-line it will store your data on your device until you decide to upload it (by example when connected with Wifi or ActiveSync). It also stores .kml files you can use in Google Earth.

We've kind of moved off topic to tracking software as opposed to being able to find a point on a static map or image... is it really that difficult to do???

PathAway, but it's way more than what you're asking for. You can create a map, calibrate it, then upload it. You can do large maps, small maps, etc.. And you can pull in topo or sat maps in on the fly over the data connection too if you don't happen to have a map already made.

TomTom 7 on Diamond and cspeech files

Does anyone know what files like "cspeech_NLD.dat" are for?
There are with the 7.20 maps of Western & Central Europe.
Is it perhaps part of the TomTom text-to-speech? Does that work with Navigator when you use one of Loquendo computer voices from e.g. the GO 910?

These files are for the text-to-speech (TTS) part indeed. However, it doesn't seem to work in TT7 for PDA. I would like it to too...

About the cspeech File in TomTom maps
I have searched the Internet quite a bit because I thought about the very same question, but certain information about this topic is very rare - few people know it exactly.
But since this has been always a splinter in my mind I searched for it and found out the following:
the cspeech files are for a text-to-speech feature, which reads street names for example. You can watch a demo at YouTube here.
However, despite some assumptions it works definitely NOT with TomTom Navigator 7, which is the latest Software for PDA (Smartphone, Windows Mobile, etc.). Probably TomTom 8 will do it when it is available for PDAs.
So you might think about deleting these files to safe the ~250 MB (For Western- & Central Europe map) of space.
However many users report crashs without the files so I suggest you to replace them with 0 kB dummy files instead of just deleting them. This seems to work very good.
I uploaded a pack below which contains dummies for all countries. Just pick the ones for the files you have and override your originals. (However you also could make dummies on your own)

GPS Altitude offset

My Diamond shows a GPS altitude offset of about 50 m plus to actual hight. I´ve tried different GPS applications and also cleared GPS memory without any success.
Is there a possibility to correct the offset?
Do other users face similar problems?

I believe the HTC touch diamond has a well known GPS issue... It's always 50m wrong, either in directions via GPS software of regarding altitude...

This is the divergence of the real world (geoide) from the idealized ellipsoidal model that the GPS system uses. Some GPS receivers have an internal data table with correction values for this offset. But our beloved internal GPS doesn't seem to have such.
The offset here in Germany (and probably in Swizerland) is about 42 meters lower.
Some programs do allow to enter a manual offset. Pathaway for example. IGo and TomTom don't.

Thanks for the tip, geoide was exactly the right keyword. I´ve now found more details in internet about it and even my software (noniGps) is able to correct it

With noniGPS you can specify a Geoide correction at Advanced Setup/GPS. Note that you have to suppress "Upd auto" (same setup page) otherwise the software ignores the correction. More details here >>

Nasty thing is that the software has to correct the offset and that I have to adapt the correction manually depending my current location.

I'm not a GPS expert but shouldn't the GPS HW and/or driver do this correction automatically? At least my car GPS is able to give the right altitude without manual intervention.
So let me raise the question again:
Is there a possibility to do the GEOID correction within HTC Diamond for all GPS application (e.g. Tom Tom) ???
