FAQ: X1 RADIOs - XPERIA X1 ROM Development

Good afternoon, people!
Yesterday I wanted to renew my Radio firmware in my X1 and found a thread about new 1.14 radio. But I've got a lot of questions about how to do it and do I need to patch something, why do I need some dll's, what NK.exe patching is, etc. I've asked fards and he kindly explained everything(thank you again, dear fards!)
So now I just want to share the experience. Just to make some people's life a bit easier
Here it comes, the FAQ. It's 50% consists of fards answers and 50% of my knowledge. But my knowledge definitely owes this forum and fards
Q: What do I need to upgrade my Radio to the latest one? (it's for those who doesn't want to know technical details and wants just newer X1 radio, nothing more)
A:1. HardSPL your X1.
2. Go here and get whatever radio you want, but ONLY from "XPERIA X1 RADIOS" section.
3. Remember three things:
- FLASHING A RADIO SHOULD NOT DELETE/RESET YOUR PHONE INFO
- FLASHING A RADIO LASTS APROX. 1 OR 2 MINUTES ONLY
- YOU ARE FLASHING THIS RADIO AT YOUR OWN RISK4. Go through one of methods below:
1) MICRO SD FLASH METHOD
FIRST:
- Charge Xperia X1 > 50% (100% if possible)
- Prepare a micro SD card: format to FAT32 with default block size
- USB cable must be disconnected from PC or power outlet (mains)
STEPS:
- Rename the radio file to KOVSimg.nbh
- Copy to micro SD card's root directory
- Insert micro SD card in the phone
- Remove and reinsert phone battery
- Go to bootloader mode (hold vol key + power key)
- Follow on-screen instructions
- When flash finishes remove/insert batter and power on
Not flashing?
a) Format another micro SD card (FTA32, default block size) and try again
b) Use the RUU method from PC
2) RADIO UPDATE UTILITY (RUU) FLASH METHOD
FIRST:
- Charge Xperia X1 > 50% (100% if possible)
- Be sure your phone is connected to PC
(XP: activesync, Vista: Windows Mobile Device Center)
- Win Vista: install latests .NET frameworks and WMDC 6.1
STEPS:
- Download the RUU FOR XPERIA X1
- Extract the RUU files to a folder
- Copy only one radio file to that folder
(renaming the *.nbh file is not required)
- Run Xperia X1 RUU app
- Follow on-screen instructions
- When flash finishes disconnect USB, reinsert batter and power on
Q: Where can I view current radio version?
A: In Start->Settings->System->Device Information->Radio version.
Q: Where can I check and get latest radios for my Xperia?
A: In our forum's Xperia library at "III - TRANSMITTER RADIOS" section.
Q: What's the difference between "Xperia X1 Radios" and "RADIOS FROM OTHER HTC DEVICES", can I use it?
A: Just to make things clear: "Xperia X1 Radios" are taken from different X1 ROMs(so it's X1-compatible by default), "RADIOS FROM OTHER HTC DEVICES" are correspondingly from other HTC devices(so generally it needs things to be done with it to be X1-compatible). BUT there are already done those "things" with radios from different HTC devices(Hex-edited, adapted and tested on a security-unlocked Xperia X1) in our Xperia library, so those radios are already X1-compatible too.
Q: What radios can I practically(with or without damage) flash into my Xperia?
A: You always can flash your original(ROMs) radio. But to flash another radio(not from your current ROM) you need to change HardSPL on your X1 once. Then you can flash any radio you want, but with risk of doing much damage.
Q: Where 1.14 radio came from? Is this radio custom or "handmade"? Or it came from R3A? Where is it from and why SE isn't updating it?
A: Its from lantin american R2AA015 rom... Id expect a newer one with r3 when its released.
Q: What radio is the best one so far?
A: I think the 1.14 is the best radio so far, it is a bit battery greedy, but it does work very well.
Q: After I flash this radio(or the previous one - 1.11.25.76), do I need rilphone.dll to copy to my phone with R2A010?
A: Its not essential but as newer radios are released then different commands seem to added to the RadioInterfaceLevel hence RILphone so ireckon its a good idea.
Q: As I've understood, this rilphone.dll is not the same as patching radio and doing some magic with mysterious NK.exe, right? So even if I want to flash radio version 1.11.25.76, having version 1.06.25.29, I should change this dll? Where should I find it for any listed there Xperia Radios?
A: The rilphone is an translator from the standard windows RIL.dll to the new radio part.
as new radios come out they can (but not always) contain new commands, so it makes sense to use the new rilphone from the same rom as it has those new commands in it, so that the OS can make use of them.
This is why it seems it's best to use the same rilphone as the radio version. I'd imagine the rilphone would come with the rom that the radio was originally taken from.
For example the R2 roms have a new radio attached, so if you flash that rom you'll automatically get the correct rilphone.
Q: Do I need to make a hardreset after I flash the radio?
A: No, hard reset is only for full ROM not radio.
Q: I saw some info about mysterious NK.exe and some radio patching. Why do I need it? Only for making radios from another phones working with mine? For example, if I have Raphael radio and I want it to work on my X1 - I should patch it, am I right? But what if I have XPERIA X1 RADIO from this link? Should I patch it?
A: Patching the NK.exe is really for running unsigned Dll files and exes (from startup or during boot at least) as NK checks the intergrity of core system files I think.. It is just ones loaded during startup I think as When you're in windows the registry settings or certifcates (such as the ones skcert.cab installs) take over.
So you don't need it for just the radio part, but really for the rilphone.dll this stops it from being overwritten by the signed exisiting one in the rom. HOWEVER. using driverwiz (from chainfire) gets around this, as that prog signs the files with a "dummy" certificate, so windows recognises it's signed and uses it..
Most of the custom roms (even the ones that are done by people who don't know what they're doing and just press a button) should contain a patched NK as it's part of the kitchens. It's pretty much essential on a custom rom otherwise you couldn't add anything to it!

If you still have some questions and want more info, take a look at this Radio thread, it's "full of useful info" (c) fards.
And I think anyone can ask radio questions in this thread. And if anybody helps you - I'll edit the first thread and add there his answer.
P.S.: This is post is owned for emergency info

Nice one, thanks!

A: Its from lantin american r2 rom... Id expect a newer one with r3 when its released.
You shouldt edit this the radio came from LatinAmerica LAM R2AA015

have any of you heard of whats a better Radio ROM for use in South east asia or maybe probably china. the new 1.14 ROM is fine on its gps lock. but i still experience signal drops which is extremely annoying. i would send a text only to find out the sending failed bec the signal dropped again. i think this is due to the fact that the x1 never really officially got into China. any suggestions?

hi..i have a question..could you please define first rilphone.dll, and what does it do?where can i download it?i have installed the latest radio (as of now) 1.14,where could i download the appropriate rilphone.dll for it..thanx,this thread i hope could answer most of newbies having their x1..

In 1.14 thread.

my bad, i missed that part, hehe. thanx bro 4 the answers

Correct me if i am wrong
But i think that you must have hard-spl your phone to flash any radio this include original xperia radios...
Actually you can only flash without hard-spl only if you flash the full original rom image that include the radio, os, splash1, splash2 and of course the corresponding original spl inside....

he meant "without much damage" it's a typo
However
if you install a bad radio then there's lots of things that can go wrong..

I think it wasn't a typo. I wrote 'any' radio, so the risk does exist if it will be 'bad' radio, like fards said.
There is written which radios are good to flash, but somebody may get radio from iphone for instance(i know it may be impossible, but just for you to understand) and flash it in X1 without any chance for it to work. That's the damage. Flash only checked radios to prevent any damage. And as usual, you do it on your own risk.

WTF... when following your guide how to flash via RUU Update, my phone made a hard reset. But the newer radio is installed. Weird...

This seems to be a few stupid question that i cannot find answers to.
Why flash one radio over another? What does updating my radio do for me?
Also I live in the US and if i flash a radio will it change the 3g bands available to me?
Thanks.

well, this might be the singel most dumb Q but ayway; what does a new radio do? im new to this.

Well, so far as I know it affects the whole recieve/transmitter section of the phone. As in, phone, 3g/hsdpa, bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, etc.
I am still running 1.10.25.18. I don't have any issues atm, but are people experience any improvements in later radios?

ty for that info. sonds like it would ock my world.
currently i have like the worse reseption/no reseption at my appartment and i live in the middle of a big city.

please upload radio update utility

sooooo where do i find the radio that i just flashed?

SIM Unlock help...

Hi all,
I had an O2 XDA Stellar which I believe is the HTC TYTN II. However, this phone was stolen a couple of weeks back. I purchased a second hand one today which is sim locked to the orange network. I managed to break the lock by following the instructions on this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835. I followed the instructions word for word till step 5.
The problem is now though it accepts the SIM and I can dial out, I don't have any audio on the calls So I can call and my phone also rings when I receive a call but I can't hear the caller nor can I be heard at the other end
Also, I hate the orange rom (and I used to complain about the O2 rom) and I wish to use the default HTC WM 6.1 professional upgrade the problem again is that it asks for a serial number and my serial number starts with DCOxxxxxxxxxxx and it says that this is not a valid serial number
What do I do now? Has my phone become a brick Please do help I can't bear the thought of having one stolen and the other toasted by me
All help will be greatly appreciated

Did you actually read anything or did you just start hacking away ? I will cut and paste a few items out of that thread, so that you don't have to actually read it .
PLEASE READ THE *FAQ* BEFORE FLASHING OR ASKING QUESTIONS!!!
* IF YOU DONT NEED TO FLASH A NEW ROM THEN PROCEED TO STEP 6 TO PUT YOUR DESIRED RADIO BACK*
7. After I flash a Rom I dont have any sound in calls and the camera is black
The Radio has to match the version of Rom you flash i.e. WM6.1, an incorrect Radio will give sound and camera problems. Read The Ultimate Radio Thread to find a Radio that matches the Rom there are lots to try on there if one doesnt work then try another.
3. What are the different types of Unlock?[/B] (answer by DaveShaw)
The three stages of unlock are:
SIM: Allows you to use SIM's from another carrier. Can be done using codes or unlocker programs on xda-devs.
Security: Allows you to flash radios from another device - It does other stuff, but this is all the casual user will use it for
CID: CID unlocking is an old concept, nowadays you flash HardSPL instead. This lets you flash any ROM, Splash or Radio (depending on sec unlock) to your device. N.B. the CID is the carrier ID (e.g. HTC__001). The stock SPL's only let you flash ROM's that match the CID in the ROM image with the CID on your device.
Obviously you did not unlock your phone if a serial number is needed to flash a new rom. I would re read everything and do it again
Thanks for the reply

As you can see I'm a bit of a newbie here, so wasn't too sure if I did need to flash to a new rom. But I did anyway. And the call problems still remain

I've been through this link as well and I was contemplating installing the latest version of the HTC WM6.1 ROMS (version 3.34.721.2, radio version 1.70.19.09) available at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_ROMs However I was not sure if this would be ok and (at the risk of sounding extremely dumb) I was not sure what WWE stood for

I maintained the default that was given by the unlocker for the CID (I think all zeros). Do I have to change this as per the ROM image? I don't mind re-doing this again it's a relief that my device isn't busted
No your phone isn't busted. Go into bootloader and check what it says next to spl, if you followed Mark's steps, it should say 3.29 Hard. If that is what it says ,then you can flash any Kaiser rom you want. If it doesn't then start over again.
WWE stands for World Wide English and those roms are all in English. That rom you picked will be fine, if you do not wish to explore the fine world of custom roms ? Maybe later.
You only have to CID unlock once by following the steps, not at every rom flash.
No sound means wrong radio, 6.0 roms need 6.0 radios and 6.1 roms need 6.1 radios. If the rom has a radio in it already then flash away.
Thanks Denco Flashed the ones I mentioned and it works perfect. Can't believe I actually have a working device Thanks for all your help, really great.
Now to sync my data to my new (second hand) htc and I'm good to go
Another question, the device works fine, however since it is a HK rom, it seems to have localised to HK. I've changed this as much as possible to UK. However, I'm wondering if this will affect anything else? For example the gps? Is there any quicker way to configure this globally so all settings use UK instead of HK?
Why didn't you flash the latest UK ROM.
Use this code: HT750GB02264 to download from HTC's site.

Once you are unlocked and HardSpl'd you can flash any rom you want. Pick a UK one another WWE rom or a custom rom. Test a bunch until you have one you like. Your only restriction is it has to be a Kaiser rom. And with all the Kaiser roms available, it is not a restriction at all.

Wow, thanks for that, I was looking for a valid serial through which I can download from the htc uk site One question I had is do I install the radio which I download from htc? Or do I keep the one I have already flashed? The one I have flashed yesterday seems to be a later version than what I've downloaded from htc

1. I keep hearing on this forum about Hard SPL, I'm not sure what this is used for or why it is required but I followed the instructions and it seems I had installed JumpSPL1.56-KAIS.exe. Now, since then I had flashed the rom, so do I need to reinstall this again? Is there some other one I should be using? I come across different versions on some threads. Also, how can I check the version of HardSPL I have?
2. When I view the memory (under settings) it shows me Storage and Program. However, I can't seem to see any storage area in file explorer. I know in my old xda 2i, there used to be a separate storage area. The reason is because some of the apps I install are quite bulky for example lexisgoo english dictionary (the dictionary files themselves are about 18mb) and this fills up the main memory. How can I install this in the storage memory? (not storage card since I sometimes swap storage cards)
Sorry lot of questions I know, but I'm a newbie and all help will be greatly appreciated
The UK downloaded ROM will install the radio too.
I would do a bit of testing with your current set-up, then flash the UK ROM.
Test the new UK ROM & radio & then reflash the radio only if you want (do some searching on Radio versions)
Newer versions are not always best, chasing the latest builds normally bites you in the ass at the end of the day.
Check HardSPL by going into bootloader:
* Using a stylus, press and hold the soft reset button at the bottom of the phone along with the camera button
* Release both buttons once the bootloader screen appears
* Exit bootloader by pressing soft reset button
Once you have installed HardSPL thats it, job done (you installed it during unlocking)
What you see in file explorer regarding storage is correct: 128MB RAM for running software ect & 256MB ROM for storing your programs ect (WM2003SE was different)
ROM can be increased by using one of the cooked lite ROMs if storage space is a concern.

Will do, the HK version seems very stable, the only thing that bothers me is the region settings. Anyway, I think I'll give the UK Rom a go and if that works well I'll stick with it

I've attached a screenshot of my memory screen. The bit that puzzles me is that the storage area apparently has a lot more storage but I do not have an option to install all my applications on that area or atleast the bulky ones. I don't think I need a lite one since I do have 112MB free in the storage area which is more than sufficient for all the apps I usually install. Can you advise how I can install apps to the storage area as well?
Lastly, I was wondering if it is possible for me install my apps on the rom and then kind of take an image of my setup and flash the rom with this setup. That way when I do a hard reset, all my apps are installed again. Which will save me the trouble I know sprite backup does something like this but I'd prefer if it was in the rom
Thanks for all your help, it has given me a lot of confidence in these matters. Something I probably wouldn't have attempted

I agree 101% and it appears fewer resources are put into ironing out bugs in the WM 6.1 ROMs than the WM 6.0 ones. I replied to fmervin's post in the ROM forums along these lines.
If all is running OK I would stick with your current HardSPL.
When installing your applications choose the option of installing to "Device"
You could install all your apps into a ROM, this would be cooking a ROM & is a complex process.
I would suggest a backup via Sprite or SPB. I use SPB v2.0 build3065 & it works well for me, preference of backup software is a bit of a Marmite scenario, you either love it or hate it.

You can't do that, it is flash memory. It's not like you can partition the hard drive.
But this is the easiest way to get your Apps and settings back after a flash.
Try this Sashimi Auto installer by a former XDA member. It is a nice little program that installs all your apps after a flash

Hey Denco..Than'x for considering my thread & giving out suggestion towards the link to check the info. But i m really nt that techy afterall so i can burn a ROM on my Tytn II. Even though i tried to burn a RUU rom that supports TyTN II ..Its just gets disconnected from USB mode..So i was looking forward to start it initially with some comparatively easier to install .cab files..Can't these RUU files be transformed into .cab files or maybe some other version of Manila 3D cab file that is completely fixed...I seriously have done a lot of research upon this but nothing looks like working. So please if you have some links to .cab files that can give a better & different look to my Kaiser running Windows 6.1...It'l be a great help !!

I think you need to decide what it is that you want to accomplish. Unless you cook your own rom, there is no way to add apps to the rom ( so that they will remain after a hard reset) Your rom is wyour phone's base operating system, it contains your OS (WM 6.1 ) and can only be replaced after completely erasing and replacing all files from the previous rom.
If it is a new rom you want, pick a rom that interests you and follow these instructions verbatim .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835
Your phone will go to the bootloader screen ( three color) and it will disconnect from usb during the process, but be patient until the end. When it says it takes ten minutes, it takes ten minutes. Leave the room if you have to , to keep from getting impatient.
If you just want to keep your OEM WM 6.1 and keep it simple, but change the look of your phone try this,
http://www.htcwiki.com/page/Manila+2D+and+M2D+Themes
This will change the look and feel of your phone with uninstallable .cab files and will not affect the rom or brick your phone by accident.

the dialer is still tf3d, so are the notifications, as well as comm manager and im not sure what else
i dont want to hard reset because of all the other settings i put on widows mobile
i guess i probably need to remove tf3d and its cronies, re establish the original xperia user interface (touch-it xperiance 6.1 still shows up on startup), and put in the original spl which i can kind of figure out from previous threads but i need help with tf3d cause i dont want to screw up my phone!!!
thank you....

Please look around in this subforum or use the search. I think you're the third person in two weeks who asks this question.
To help answer your question:
If you can connect to SE update service and update from there, you will flash the latest official rom. That means that all stuff on the device (not on the sd-card) will be gone anyway. You can do a hard reset, which has the same effect but will restore the rom that was last flashed.
If you want to use an official rom, you have to flash stock spl. You can find that in the hard-spl thread (one of the sticky topics in the top of this forum).
Another way to obtain an official rom is to look in the rom library (also a sticky in this subforum), and look for the R3A rom you want. You probably want one with a specific language and maybe even a provider. Just look around in the R3A rom list to see which suits you best.
having the touch it xperience means you do not hav a stock rom
so you must flash a stock rom if you want it stock
look in the official rom thread, don't waste your time with SE update!
also if you flash a rom you must hard-reset anyway!
To go back to original, you need to follow these steps:
1) Download the stock rom for your country from the same forum, usually it's the Generic_UK.
2) Flash this stock rom to your mobile (this will clear all your settings and remove all data). IMPORTANT: Before doing this step, download PPCPIMBackup tool and backup all your data using this tool.
Additionally, you may have to restore your stock radio(not FM radio) BEFORE proceeding to Step 3 if it has been modified, search the forum on how to identify and do this.
3) Download the Hardspl utility and the stock rom's "ruu_signed.nbh". You'll find both in the Hardspl sticky post here. Connect your phone and run Hardspl, but before clicking "Next" in the first step, replace the "ruu_signed.nbh" in Hardspl's folder with the stock one you downloaded. Now continue hardspl and your stock SPL will be restored. IMPORTANT: Make sure you don't have a file named "Kovsimg.nbh" in your memory card before you do this or else it may not work.
Now you're done restoring everything to original. If you just want the stock OS, but wanna keep the hard spl for later modification to rom then you can skip Step 3. But unless you do Step 3, you will not be able to use the SE update service and any remaining warranty you have is still void.
NOTE: Make sure you restore stock OS and stock radio(not FM radio) before stock SPL, that is do Step2 before Step3.
Summary of things you need:
1) PPCPIMBackup tool to backup all your data.
2) Stock ROM(OS) for your mobile, additionaly the stock radio.
3) Hardspl utility and the stock spl file - you can skip this if not needed.
stock radio is included with stock roms!

Glad it helped you. When I first came to this forum, I was confused too. Then I figured it out. Well.. I think the radio here refers to the transmitter. Radios might differ based on country as different countries have different bands on which the mobile operators work. I think the radio referred here is just the driver file which makes the transmitter in the phone work.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I searched but never found any topic that explains what an xperia radio is. I'm assuming what I thought is correct.

To further clarify, it's the PHONE transmitter, the one that lets you call and send messages and go on the internet. It is not an FM transmitter or receiver.
Is there any difference if you have a X1i or X1a when flashing any of the original ROMs in the sticky topics here?

Nope, you use the same method either way.

[Q] About ROM upgrade.

Hi all,
Excuse me if apparentely it's can seems I repeat old and answred question, but sincerely I have not yet sufficentely clear ideas on how I can flash my blackstone with an updated Rom.
I want remark that I have a decent knowledge on developing a program for W.M., but I confess that after read various threads and articles about, I remained in a great confusion yet!
The question:
I have a branded (Tim) Blackstone:
BLAC100 32M
SPL-1.13.0000
MicroP-BlackStone (Led) v6
Device Info:
ROM Version 1.13.401.0 (20428)ITA
ROM Date 10/25/08
Radio Version 1.09.25.14
Protocol Version: 52.49a.25.26W
This device ABSOLUTELY need to be upgraded to the Rom 1.56 (but first of all I WANT TO UNBRAND it).
After an initial problem (caused by the unricognized S/N), I dowloaded (using another S/N) from Htc the File:
RUU_BlackStone_HTC_ITA_1.56.408.0_Radio_52.62.25.34_1.13.25.24_Ship.exe
To upgrade my device, I want to preserve only the country and the language, because I read that it is necessary to preserve the A-Gps funtionalities (data changes country by coutry). Is it thrue?
I understood that I can't use it, cause the Tim brand of my device.
In my case only the brand is not matching, while the language and country are apparentely matching.
(But, why the "401" of my device is not matching with the "408" of file I downloaded? Can I use the file with this unmatching country code?)
1) - I have a great confusion on SPL, HSPL, SSPL, USPL.
2) - I have a great confusion because I not understood if Radio Rom upgrade and Rom upgrade are 2 different processes or not.
3) - Is the Rom version related (developed) for a specific Hardware version (as it is logical to think)?
4) - Is the Radio rom "country sensitive"? (As I think that each country have a different GSM Net).
5) - If want upgrade both radio and rom, what instrument exactely I need?
Please can you clear my ideas.... and doubts?
Thanks
Ignazio
Ok, you have managed to get an official HTC rom, you can also find some more here
If you use HSPL or USPL, this will allow you to flash the new rom. If you are intending on staying on the official rom, uspl will probably be the best option for you to use.
In response to your questions:
1) SPL - Second Program Loader is a boot loader after IPL (Initial Program Loader) often seen on smart phones and PDA's. SPL is similar to a BIOS in a computer and can be flashed and updated.
The difference between USPL and HSPL:
* HSPL is an user-modified SPL that you have to flash to your phone. It overwrites the existing SPL on your device with a "hacked" one so to say. It allows you to bypass the HTC certificate check and flash unsigned or CID-mismatching roms to your phone. You only have to flash it once and then you can flash roms anytime.
* USPL is a temporary solution. It takes advantage of an exploit in the existing SPL and then loads a modified one to memory, effectively allowing the same thing as HSPL. However, since this is only memory-resident you have to do it each time you want to flash unsigned or CID-mismatching roms to your phone, because this exploited state is lost upon reboot. With USPL you must still have the right version of the HTC SPL that is compatible with the rom you want to use.
* SSPL is just another method of getting to change the spl and is only really needed if you experience problems using one of the other methods.
Hopefully this makes it a little clearer for you.
2) It depends. The radio is in most cases included in the rom. The rom you are looking to use included a radio. This is shown by the 1.13.25.24 in the name of your rom, so if you install that rom it will also update the radio in a single process. You can however also only upgrade the radio and then it is done as a separate process and will not affect the rom.
3) All the roms are initially developed for a particular hardware configuration I would imagine, but there are many fantastic chefs here on xda who take roms meant for other devices and are able to port some of the components to a cooked rom which can then be used on a number of different devices.
4) Yes, radios are country and area sensitive, so what works well for one person in a particular area would possibly not work as well for you.
5) You will need to use either hspl or uspl in order to upgrade your radio (if you are using one intended for an HTC). Some people have taken radios from other devices such as the Omnia, but in order to flash these radios you need to do a security unlock of your device and there are special tools that allow you to do this, but this is really only a last resort if you can't find an HTC radio that works for you.
The steps to follow in order to flash are described in the Dummies Guide to Flashing (see link in my signature) and if you have any further questions, please ask them in that thread.
Thanks for reply,
You cleared at least 70% of my doubts.

Read the Dummies Guide (link in my signature). If you have any more queries please post them in that thread as this one is likely to be closed down soon.
ROMS are a personal thing, so have a look at a few and read some of the more popular threads (ie the ones that keep popping to the top) and depending on the feedback received from users make a choice. Once you've flashed once it becomes addictive and you'll try a few before you find one that suits you.
another thing
after i follow all the steps from there all roms should work..after that finnishing them i start that rom update launcher that comes with every rom?
Continuing on Dummies Guide thread.......
As above, continue on dummies guide

Another scream for help...

Hi,
I have my HD from march and being interested in WM6.5 and disappointed by HTC because they do not release an upgrade I decided to try some cooked roms.
I used USPL so that I can keep my original SPL.
I tried:
* Duttys WM6.5 Sense 2.1 Holy Grail
* Duttys WM6.5 Leo Holy Grail
* Topix HD
From the first boot I have noisy screen image with 4 colours or something .... but after entering in sleep mode and restore it recovers to normal "true color" until I reset the device. I can live with that but the real issue is that I cannot start my phone using the original radio neither with the latest versions I found for HTC HD. No error there, it simply stays off after I confirm that I want to enable the phone.
Also the device is hanging for very long time now and then and I have exactly the same problem/behaviour with all the above roms. I tried some fixes found in the forum but nothing works and I did not found anybody with the same weird behaviour.
I wand to recover my stock firmware but I found that even I brought mine from Romania it has a Czech S/N and HTC does not provide a stock ROM for this "v1.56.402 - Czech republic - not supported".
What can I do. do you guys know if I can get the original firmware from somewhere?
Thanks.
Obviously you havent bothered to read anything let alone the guidelines of starting new threads.
The answers are in the forum I suggest you take time to read and start by reading the forum guidelines and the sticky threads.
If you dont understand what you're doing then stick to a stock ROM until you do or you might brick your phone.
You say that you used uspl. Are you sure that it was successful as the symptoms you describe are typical when you have the incorrect spl for the rom you are using. After using uspl, what spl is showing in the bootloader screen?
Follow the steps in the Dummies Guide to Flashing and your problems should be sorted out.
If you still have further questions, post them in that thread as the mods will close this one as soon as they come across it (as explained by homer285)
you're ok as long as you can still go to bootloader mode, then go back to the uspl 2.5 guide here, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS STEP BY STEP
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505377
and here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=462347
format your sd card using fat32 (full format) (if you are a frequent flasher I suggest you get a small capacity sd card – 1Gb - and devote this only for flashing)
rename the RUU_signed.nbh to BLACIMG.nbh and pair this with ROMUpdateUtility -(application file) OR BlackstoneRUUWrapper (whichever the ROM cook presents) copy these TWO files in your formatted sd card.
then using Digital Outcast's USPL GUI: look here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=508361
if you're using Vista see this to update your sync driver
http://www.modaco.com/content/windo...u-on-vista-it-can-be-done-the-ultimate-guide/
flash the ROM.
I hope I make the above clear to you.
suggestion: Read the howtos!
If I was you I would do like this:
- flash hspl.
- flash latest radio from memorystick
- flash any 23xxx-rom from memstick (miri or phamQ can I recommend).
Cant understand why you are doing it the complicated way... there are ways to recover to original-spl if needed. This is the easyest way to flash 6.5 and it is almost fail-safe.
good luck!

dont add to the confusion, he is already using USPL, the SAFEST METHOD as stated by Dutty Throy, he even advocates this in all of his cooked ROMs
all he needs to do is to redo the steps again as i posted above.
Sorry for my panic post
Yes, after 8 hours of trying stuff I did not read post guide-lines but I searched all the internet and xda forums, tried all the dumb fixes for my weird behaviours without any success.
I am sure that my original rom it is not available and I call for help from people that have Czech S/N English version to extract the flash and the radio if it is no so complicated or if they have it as backup.
Actually I read every "flashing for dummies" posts and only when I thought I got everything I started to flash it.
I used the latest 2.5 USPL, the GUI one and also the command line from the cmd prompt so I saw all the output lines and there was no error at all. It is clear that the device was successfully flashed and I respected all the version requirements stated in description of the packages. The problem comes from some sort of incompatibility. The versions at boot is the right one.
The only wrong thing I did was after seeing USPL 2.5 coloured boot loader I go on with the tutorial which said to read on screen RUU instructions which said to connect with activesync and I did as they said and restart the device, cradle and continue flashing in which case the original SPL started and I got a flashing error on the desktop client but after restarting the device everything run normally with the stock firmware and I think I have a good understanding on how it work and I can say that that error does not hurt a bit.
I finally succeed, in the morning, to flash 6.1 vanilla topaz and almost everything works except the GPS module and I am investigating this issue.
It is clear that you cannot help me an my device issue related to WM6.5 roms are unique and I will investigate this on my own.
Sorry to everybody, again, for my wrong located post and have a nice day.

[Q] Please explain to me...

Hello everyone and sorry for starting a new thread with so many threads already about installing custom ROMs. So sorry again....
First of all I want to say that I have installed Saturday my first custom ROM.
1. I installed HardSPL
2. I installed ROM (I got an error first time because my usb got diconnected - tricolour boot screen and an error code - could not see it; second time everything worked fine and I have now a new great looking ROM
3. I did not installed Radio.
1st question: Do I have to install Radio everytime I install a new ROM or is it ok if I keep my old Radio? - the phone works just fine.
Second question: Do I have to HardSPL everytime I install a new ROM?
Please be kind and reply to my questions even if it must have been already posted in some thread.
rarely can i answer a question but yours are easy LOL
You don't need to do your radio because the radio you have is untouched by roms.
Likewise if you do a radio it wont change your rom.
Radio's probably will not make much diffrence.
Once you have Hard spl it is done.
You can then flash as many roms as you want , but Hard Spl is just once
No and No.
Thank you guys.
The radio is stored on a different part of the memory then the ROM, so it doesn't get replaced when you flash a ROM (unless the ROM specifically includes it, like the new "official leaked" ATT ROM). And custom ROMs will never include the radio, that I know of.
A newer radio version MAY get you better battery life or GPS reception. But it can be very specific to your geographic location. It your choice whether to update your radio or not, its certainly not required. If you want, you are free to experiment, as you can always go back to the old radio if the new one doesn't work out. The process for flashing a new radio is essentially the same as flashing a ROM, except the actual process if done very fast.
As already mentioned, you only need to HardSPL once. The only way phone will become SPL locked back to factory condition is if you specifically do so using the provided relocker program on the SPL thread (for instance, to return the phone for warranty repair).
