Hi all,
I just migrated from Hermes to Tilt. I've upgraded to HardSPL 3.56 and installed the latest AT&T official rom for tilt. Everything seems to be working fine except for the soft reset or hard reset procedure.
In the manual it states to simply push the stylus in the reset button hole. For hard reset "hold down left and right soft keys and push stylus, then release stylus and wait till the confirmation msg appears then release soft keys, finally pressing send button for confirmation". None of these procedures work. I've tried it several times, but nothing happens, as if there is no button in the reset hole.
A friend of mine bought a tilt a few months back and he reports the same thing, though he is not the type who will play around with his phone so he doesn't bother with it. But to me this seems to be a big issue, I tried searching for this isue on AT&T forums but no succes. So now I ask here, is this a common issue with TILT? (I know HTC TytnII reset works fine). Is there a remedy for this problem? should I return it or should I just live with it ?
Thanks

no this is not a reported problem as the procedure is pretty striaght forward.
just simply insert stylus into the hole next to the chargin usb port on bottom of phone (not the small hole but the slightly bigger and round one on the top right side of charging port).
hard reset hold both soft keys and while holding them insert stylus into soft reset hole, maintain this position until you see the warning about hard reset and than proceed. Make sure you are not fat thumbing the keys i.e. not pressing two different keys (hitting the ie key while keeping the soft key pressed).
Hope this helps.

Well as i wrote in my initial post, I've tried the proper procedure, and believe me I was inserting in the right hole ! But nothing seems to happen. I can go into boot loader mode when the tilt is off by pressing the camera and power button, and releasing the power button while still holding the camera button but can't do anything with the reset button. Its working alright otherwise no hangups no nothing. Should I hold on to it or return it? btw Its secondhand not new !
Before you return it, is your stylus the original one? Maybe its an aftermarket stylus that is too fat to go in all the way. Try with a safety needle and see if that reaches it.
If not, i'd go ahead and return it, i've been through 4 kaisers and not had this issue.

Nope doesn't work. Stylus is small enough to go all the way in. I checked with a bright flash light and there is no black push button switch as all other devices have for a reset switch. Its all black plastic. Should I open the casing to check it ?

Hi,
Just last friday I got my new Tytn II and yesterday I discovered that the Backspace button on my soft keyboard didn't do anything anymore. All other soft buttons where working fine. Then opening the slider key board and trying the back button it didn't work either. Same goes for all (!) keyboard buttons. Then tried the green and red buttons, the tilt wheel and finally all hard buttons on the device. Only the power on/off button works.
The phone can be operated using the stylus. No problems there . I only installed Tom Tom, Remote Desktop and Google Maps. I am thinking of returning the phone to the shop, but my personal data and settings will be gone I think.
It seems like the driver that triggers hard button functions in windows is missing, broken or just plain ignorant. Anybody any ideas on how to troubleshoot and repair this?
Thanks for the trouble.
Cheers,
Donald

OK - obvious things first, this is either going to be a hardware or a software problem. If it's hardware, you need to return it to the shop as it will still be under warranty. If it's software, we'll be able to fix it with a Hard Reset.
Although a Hard Reset will remove all your settings and personal data, it will put the phone back into the state it was when you bought it. Seeing as the keys worked when you bought it, they should go back to working too!
My advice would be firstly to backup everything you need (contacts, e-mails, etc) onto your PC or your Exchange server. Then press and hold both softkeys and press the reset button with the stylus. Keep the softkeys pressed until you see a white screen warning about doing a reset, then release the softkeys. Press the green pickup button to start the reset, then the green button again when prompted to restart the phone. It will take a while to reboot first time, and then it'll go through the same screens it did when you first opened the box. Re-sync all your contacts/e-mails and you're sorted.
If the phone won't respond to the softkeys when you reset, and instead begins a normal reset, then it's definitely hardware. It could simply be a connector that's come loose, but opening the phone up will invalidate your warranty - so in your case, as it's so new, I'd say return it back to the shop and get a working one.
Good luck.
Perform a Hard Reset. That will rule out and correct any software issues. If it works after that it was the software that was messed up. If it doesn't work after that then its more likely a hardware issue and will need to be exchanged.

Where is "the reset buton" that can be pressed with stylus? I have read that on the XDA-Wiki page too, ...but I can't understand what is "the reset buton" (maybe is the power buton ...but I don't need the stylus for press it )

OK for a soft reset there is a small hole to the left of the usb input on your device. Just simply insert the stylus into that hole and push
For a hard reset hold down both soft keys (first softkey to the right of the green button and the second soft key to the left of the "end" button or red button). At the same time insert the stylus into that little hole and give it a gentle push.
If you actually read wiki there would be a nice diagram there for you.
Oh ...I understand now ... Thank you!
This has happened to me twice. I'm not sure what led to it and I've not been able to reproduce it. I think it's a driver issue. A soft reset fixes it.

this has happened on my wifes tilt/8925......worked fine on the way home then after she got home the green pickup button the end call button the windows button and the ok button have all stopped working. I thought it would be hardware but flashed anyway. remapped a couple of other buttons to bring up dialer.............do you think this may be a connector also.......or something more detrimental?
Thanks

yes..........soft rest many times.......powered off and back on.........removed battery........attempted hard rest, but buttons did not work..........re-flashed phone....still doing it.
I installed the official WM 6.1 update on my Kaiser, and now it won't boot - it just hangs on the HTC splash screen. The bigger problem is that hard reset doesn't seem to work - I press and hold the 2 soft keys, press the reset button, and then it just does a soft resetback to the splash screen.
Can anyone help? Please?

thats because you are not properly pressing the two soft screens. Do you have big figures? if so you might be hitting the keys next to them accidently and the phone just soft resets when you put style in to hole.
Make sure you don't touch the other keys except the 2 soft keys together at same time and while keeping them depressed insert stylus and than keep this for a second and the restore will come up.
p.s. use chop sticks or something else or grow your nails a little lol so you can press the keys easily
Also make sure the USB cable is not plugged in as the phone will NOT hard reset if it is.
Thanks for the ideas guys, but still no luck. Fairly sure I was pressing the buttons right anyway, but I've tried with a couple of pens, and no USB cable in sight, and it's not done anything different. Any other suggestions?
Will the phone go into the bootloader (hold Camera button while soft reseting)? If so, then just flash a different ROM.
Thank you, that's sorted it!
Good to hear that worked. There have been some isolated reports on the site regarding certain OEM ROMs preventing the traditional hard reset from working. Look like you found one of them!
I have tried several times to hard reset using proceedure described, but the phone just restarts.
Help!

Cannot hard reset as shown.
The phone does not show reset message & justs restarts, like a soft reset.
it happened to me also. i thought i can not hardreset but the problem was i was doing it wrong.
my recommendation to you:
try and do it without the back cover. to push the reset you need to enter yr stylus in an angle. that together with the use of the other hand (two fingers) make it hard to hard reset (pun intended). i found that i can do it much easier without the back cover or (also highly recommended for ppl with small hands) ask somebody to help you (three hands method ).
make sure you are pressing the volume down button.
also: keep pressing all three points for 1 sec then first release the reset button and keep the other two pressed for 1 second more before releasing and for god's sake do it over and close to a soft surface..., just in case.
i gave up. my phone is about to snap in half from me holding it down so hard. my hands are ****ing numb. what i think i'm doing is i move either slightly up or down while holding down the enter key and it becomes up or down instead of enter.
i did the settings-clear memory-1234 method but is that really the same as a physical hard reset.
i think i did **** up the phone, the usb connector interferes a little as it goes in the phone and activesync doesn't work anymore.
Try this procedure as another method.
Soft reset and the immediately press the volume down + round center button. Then follow procedure in grey menu to reset device back to manufacture settings. This is the same as a Hard Reset.
Good Luck and try not snap things, especially your device, lol
today's my first day with the phone, i really don't think i should ever try a physical hard reset again if i don't want to break the phone. activesync still works, whew...

i wasn't talking about bricking the phone, but literally snapping the phone in half or something similar from pushing or bending the phone too hard.
anyway, i had a breakthrough today. previously, i was so intent on keeping the buttons pressed (especially the enter button) that i was pushing incredibly hard on the phone, making me feel like i was bending it too much.
and what was happening was that pushing it hard doesn't really help but rather hurt me because it was either being pushed as up or down (or even left or right) while pushing so hard.
the key for me was before pushing reset, to press it not crazy hard but press in directly straight and move up and down to make sure i'm not pushing up or down, and practice keeping it pressed in straight, then when i'm comfortable with that, (while keeping volume down pressed of course) then press the reset button.
and the grey hard reset screen should come up within a couple of seconds of resetting. so if it doesn't appear within a few seconds, let go of the poor phone and try again. previously, i had no idea how quickly that screen was to appear so i would hold it for 1-2 minutes while the phone was going through its booting process. hopefully this helps save some wear on your hands and fingers.

yesterday my tytn2 started to act crazy, i didn't drop it or installed any new software.
the screen started to turn on on his own, front buttons stopped working accept the center button witch now opens the start menu.
when i open the keyboard the fn light is on and the keyboard doesn't work.
when i write the sms message trough touchscreen the backspace isn't working so i can't delete misspelled words.
the photo button and power button on left side still working fine.
all the applications work fine, and i can make calls trough touch screen.
i can't make hard reset because front buttons wont respond.
is anybody had similar problems or have the solution.
my guarantee is gone so i hope this is software problem.
Try doing a battery pull and letting your phone sit like that for a minute, put the battery back in, and see what happens...
It sounds like you have water damage to your phone, though. Every take it in the bathroom with you while you shower? The steam in the air is a sure fire way to get water damage, and it will take time to show, but eventually circuits rust and stop working and you end up with a lot of random problems, and usually all of a sudden you have a lot of major problems.
well, i can't remmeber that i had carry it in the bathroom while showering.
i pulled out the battery, waited for about 5 mins and when i put it back nothing has changed. thanks for the tip.
is there a way to do a hard reset without pushing the front buttons?

look in the wiki for a detail of all the ways you can perform a hard reset (i believe there are at least THREE ways)
METHOD 1: the one you are looking for (because your buttons don't work) can be triggered by going to Settings->System->Clear Storage (assuming your phone still boots up and the touchscreen is usable)
METHOD 2: when the phone is POWERED OFF:
1. stick the stylus in the soft reset hole and hold it there
2. hold down the two soft keys
3. press the power button
if you try METHOD 2 and if it works, then you can safely assume that your soft keys are working and that it is indeed a software issue.
i used METHOD 1 and did a hard reset.
nothing has changed, front buttons and keyboard still refuses to work.
unfortunatly it seems it is a hardwer problem so i'm going to take it to the service.
thank you for helping me.
I can't find any info about hard resetting X2 anywhere... Isn't it possible on this phone? I need to reset the user code...
Edit: Solution was to update the phone with SEUS. It lets you reinstall firmware even though you already have the latest (unlike normal SE phones).
While the phone is powered down:
- Push the two front skinny buttons down simultaneously
- While doing that, *briefly* press the power button (ie don't press and hold it)
- When the screen with instructions comes up, you can stop pressing the skinny buttons
- Follow instructions - basically press 'r' on the keyboard when it asks
EDIT: My bad -- thought question was about X1
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, that does not work - it just boots up normally.
Have you tested this yourself? Is the SE logo supposed to show up?
And the "skinny buttons" - are those the call/hang up buttons? Are there four buttons on the front, or only two? (i mean, is there a button both above and below the short line sticking out, or are they just one button?)

theres a small pin hole on the back under the battery cover. top left just under the camera. seem to remember reading in the instructions that its some kind of hard reset. not sure if it will do what you require. youll need a pin or tiny screwdriver...

I've already tried holding the two buttons while pressing it (like on X1), but that doesn't work. And the instructions manual says nothing about hard reset - only soft reseting using this hole.
The closest thing i have found is this article about hard reset:
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/phones/detailed/toperformahardreset/x2/xperiax2?lc=en&cc=en
But the problem is that it misses the only essential thing: how to do it...
I think the only known way is: settings\system\clear phone memory. It resets the phone to factory default. The button in the whole is only a soft reset button like in case of X1.

But my problem is that i can't start up the phone. When booted, it just brings up a numberpad. I assume it's asking for a personal code, but it doesn't say anything (that must be a bug!), and there's nothing happening when entering a code and hitting OK. So it's hard to know what it really expects me to do...
I'll try to update the software using SEUS, if that's available for this phone model.

clear phone memory definately restores to factory default. i bought my phone on ebay so used that setting when i first got it. took about half an hour while it reset everything and completely re-installed all the software.
doesnt really help in this situation though. yes you can update via SEUS, the X2 is one of the first ones that come up on the sony update software. but if youve got the latest firmware update i dont think it will let you do anything. it will just say no newer update found and exit.
have you tried starting it with and without a simcard? daft question but is it unlocked? maybe you have wrong network simcard. that can sometimes bring up a keypad on some phones.
if its definately unlocked to any network did you try the standard lock codes?
i.e 1111 or 111111 or 1234 or 123456
I downloaded SEUS, and it let me update the phone even though it already had the latest firmware. Now everything works fine!
