Now, our BlackStone've got Windows Mobile 6.1, 6.5, (maybe) 7, Android (Linux), iPhone themes and etc.
So, can anyone who being the top developer in XDA-Dev will try to run symbian from Nokia 5800?
I think that if this idea come true, it's maybe make BlackStone to be the Guiness World of Record that can install (almost) operating system for mobile device in the world.
Please share your idea...
from a pure hardweae point of view the blackstone should be able to run symbian (directky/as primary OS) on a softwear point of view the current spl probably will not permit it if that is the case that can be resolved but would require quite extensive modification of the code in the spl. akternitivly the othere approach is to run as a secondary or emulated os. but then if the spl dose allow symbian the os will need to be ported all options requre a fair deal of work on the soft wear, im a heardwear guy no coder or softwear writer/developer i can do some basics but if the project starts ill be happy to do what i can.
this would be akin to putting a fiat engine in a ferarri, no?

ya i thnk ur right...but having symbian as an emulated os will shut up every other idiot who'll claim that our phone is **** because it doesnt run symbian (like n97) so..will be a BIG plus point ...n can also put our dear phone in guiness world records.

Not quite! Let's not forget that Ferarri is owned by FIAT !!
So symbian on the HD will be more complicated!
Hi,
Don't take this the wrong way, but if you like the symbian software that much (And believe me, I do love it to) why don't you just buy the Nokia 5800... the device is developed for the soft so it will run perfect on that one...

Just be the idea because if anyone (I mean to XDA-Dev's intelligent developers) can ported and modified ROM for install Symbian OS, it's will be the really good thing.
I like the WM very much, but still want to know that is it possible to run other OS? I think that it will really good sound as if we can run almost OS in the world.

Iphone OS is possible on Touch HD i think
hi Guys
i think this is a great idea and i dont think it is impossible..might just be a lot of work though.. wish i could help do it.. have friends with iphone and would luv to port it to my touch HD.
heres my ideas.
in essence Iphone OS is linux .. correct? unless immistaken it has its roots in Linux and we already have Android running on a touch HD what would be the difference in the code between Android and iphone OS.. can someone perhaps look into this
i would luv to get some feedback from other users see if it is possible..
thank you

Best allround solution I think:
Don't 'copy', 'clone' or 'port' the OS X as a whole. Instead, take aspects of it say ... I dunno ... user-friendliness and adapt it into what Windows Mobile does best. So instead of using a dead ugly IE 6 checkbox on your application (it's depressing to see when I'm using manilla or 6.5 today) use a nice image or bloody skin the thing.
Apple has always had it's sex-appeal over Windows (objectively speaking) BUT Windows has always found a way to kick it were it hurts and still impress. Sadly I don't think the mobile war is moving quick enough on out end so lets give them a helping hand rather than jump ship!

you certain bout that? actually, osx is the os from the flopped NEXT system that steve jobs came up with more than a decade ago, and osx, even though its had some face lifts, and iphone os and apps are still coded in Objective-C, a long dead language that predates C++. it isnt even really object oriented. not deep down at the core anyway. its regular C wrapped in some pityfull object oriention extention. anyway, freebsd wasnt around when the next system or objective-c were developed, so that theory is a no-go.. sorry...
i for one would like to see winmo ported to the iphone hardware, but who would write the drivers? not apple, i assure you, but it would be fun!
on another note, from time to time, i pass off my hd as a new prototype iphone black, or the iBlack. put an apple icon as your start icon, go with a black theme, and watch those media-head teenagers drool... its worth every penny hahahaha....

As far as I know, OSX (and iPhone OS) is based on Darwin, a full open-source FreeBSD derivative developed by Apple... And I guess that Objective-C was chosed for "application developers" to ease the porting of pre-OSX apps to the new OS. And of course, because it seems that using a language no other one uses must be "iCool"
+1 why one earth would someone want to poison HD with such bad OS?
Yes it has fluid graphics and chicks like it, but it sucks at everything else!
Buy SPB mobile shell and make it look like iphone if you so much want it + it is 100x better.
New version 3 is nice competition for even touchflo 3 and x1 panels!
im all for the Touch HD that is why i got myself it and not the iphone... looks much nicer in terms of screen and feel.. much better.. i just want to get OSx on there to proof to someone that the WM platform is much better than apples because you can do ANY thing with it.. even port your competitions OS to it
so its more getting bragging rights than anything else.. i agree that we need to get WM to a point where it can compete with Iphone in a way.. Touch HD doesnt have any hardware keys anymore.. but the OS not completely finger friendly like Iphone.. much to learn from Apple in that regard.. WM is going to have to shape up..
one other thing.. how amazing wont the Apple OS look on the AWESOME HD screen .
other point WM lacks in a lot of software that the iphone has.. not saying i would use everything on the market.. but its kinda nice having the option.. and not seeing something cool on the iphone and then wondering.. hey where is the WM version.. so either the developers need to wakeup and develop for WM and Iphone or we need to port the OS to the HD.. or i need to get an iphone latter option not really an option .. i wont go to the darkside
To support the different hardware one need to write a HAL and so forth. Not a job feasible for individuals (Time, man power and money). Besides this IMAO why would one like to poison such a beautiful device..
The iphone OS is a severly locked down piece of [email protected] in my opinion. You can't change anything, you are in jail with it. The apps are a joke, I never saw such useless applications. The only good thing the OS has is a good on screen keyboard and good web browsing capabilities. Besides that it's garbage. There has been allot of progress with the Windows mobile OS and I think we are getting close to having everything we need/want (allot of good apps, good web browsing and good on screen keyboard). Just my opinion. I used the Iphone 3g for several months. I have a brand new one sitting inside the box sealed that apple replaced for me. BTW, if anybody wants it it's for sale (Black Iphone3G 16GB). Just my opinion.

So we've seen the projects to create a ROM for Android on the Rhodium... Well now that the Symbian Foundation has released their open source code I think our handy dandy developers have an even greater challenge on their hands!

Hey fellow XDA-ers. I thank you for your thoughts thus far. Android is only a part of the next wave in Mobile Computing. Honestly I've found the MyTouch I owned from T-Mo too be toooooo slow and toooooo consumerish. I like a phone that has both lifestyle and professional all in its mix. This makes me a big fan of WinMo and Symbian. Seeing that Windows Mobile and Symbians *NEW* operating system both run C++ and .NET it may be much easier, practical and cooler than we think.
Yea...
Theoretically it should be a pretty fast and stable alternative. It would be dope, but there wouldhave to be some major UI changes for me to try it out....but maybe I'm unsure on how far Symbian has come...
I personally don't see the need for another proprietary operating system with its origins 20+ years old, windows mobile is enough of that for me.
Android was developed from the ground up with modern mobile devices in mind and in my opinion anyways is the most promising mobile os on the market right now.

No need for that man. Even though Symbian has the highest exposure worldwide Android is the next wave, plus Nokia has Maemo to push as it is. Dual OS is more than enough for HTC user, such as myself. Just imagine triple boot Gen.Y where are you? LOL
just buy yourself a damn nokia ...
Android is crap i had a few device, and simbian is just fallin in darkness...
why would you want symbian? i could see android and iphone os for the apps and winmo for the customization and community support, even palm and webos... for reasons. but symbian isnt pretty, or userfriendly, customizable, or have alot of apps. its a slightly uglier version of blackberrys os. besides does it even support wvga resolutions? i think the only other os to do that is android.
... what a weird discussion, I do understand to have Symbian a lot more than Android here are my point against android:
- everybody says it is open source, the core is but nothing else that is why there are so few aternative ROMS
- No real GPS software, dont even star to compare with solutions available on Symbian or WM
- No tethering without hack!!!!! I am dreaming here, I was about to by the Moto-Droid, when I saw that I went back to my good TP2
- Google is as close as Apple when it come to app available on its store.
a nice GUI is NOT all, and software and functions make the difference, people can complain as much as they want about the "old" WM is it so far the OS which give the more flexibility and Symbian cones just behind, use a N97 and you'll see how smooth it is.
Now this will probably lead to a troll discussion but for me trying to adapt Android to some other device or symbian is perfect for fan who want to play but not for "production" phone, and for that I clearly keep WM so far. waiting for WM7
Best
OP: Have you ever even used Symbian? I have, and I have to say it's the most god awful mobile OS I've ever used. I returned the Nokia I bought within a week because Symbian was truly terrible. I can't honestly imagine why anyone would want to run Symbian, by choice, when you have other options like Android, Maemo/Mer, Windows Mobile, or anything other than Symbian. I wouldn't ever want the capable developers who could port Symbian actually waste their time on such a terrible OS. Porting Symbian to the Pro2 would be a downgrade; it would be like trading in a premium, business class smartphone for a $10 feature phone. IMO, not worth it. [/my 2 cents]

i've used the N97 before. in fact, I came to the TP2 from an N97. symbian is, IMO, one of the most brilliantly designed mobile OSes in existence but it's implementation on the N97 was flawed, to put it mildly. don't get me wrong--I love Symbian and the N97 but there was too much wrong for me to overlook. For one, the v. 12 firmware(and, to a lesser extent, the v. 20 firmware) was too buggy for me and the N97 was all but smooth even with theme effects turned off. This may have been remedied with more RAM and a MUCH faster CPU(OMAP 3, anyone?). For what was to be a flagship the N97 was a great disappointment.
As for Symbian on the TP2, I would wait until later in the year to see what Symbian^3 has to offer before considering porting it.
Just my $.02...
@jaekidd1012
You get the point and understand.
I think most of the people are thinking of the old S40 OS which was garbage. But S60v5 which will now become the revamped Symbian^3, ^4 and ^5 will be an amazing piece of ROM and feature rich capabilities.
Because Symbian and WM are both written in Windows codes this should be a much easier project than Android. Android is great for those who want to use it but it's going to be overshadowed in years to come by Apple, Nokia and Windows.

i would love to see sense on wvga. i hope htc isnt giving up on that. i think android has the customization of windows mobile with the app store and prettyness of iphone os. just dont expect any other os's to run. linux has a way of working on any device.

That where I disagree. the Operating system is the base of a platform and so far Android is as stuck as the iPhone, WM offer a lot more "playability" let see if WM7 will be as good for that. the important part is also the software and Android/Google as iPhone/Apple want to control all of this so refuse software allowing tethering and have the right of life and death on any application. I HATE this,
I bought the phone, it is MINE, if I want to void the warranty it is my problem, if I want to install an illegal application in my country I take responsability and refuse that google or Apple guide me like if I was a kid, I mean look at that: http://www.androidguys.com/2010/01/25/nexus-censoring-swear-words/ I really can't stand that you buy a piece of equipment for so much and companies want to force you to use it there way. Plus privacy!!! GOOGLE STORES EVERYTHING YOU DO WITH YOUR (???) PHONE!!! And nobody complains, everybody loves it. a nice GUI is not enough to make a good OS, I am not even talking about the iphone and the multitasking...

I was wondering why other posters were making it sound like this was the worst idea anyone's ever read...it didn't sound too bad to me, hah. S60v5 doesn't look as awful as the posts are making it seem.
I don't really care too much either way on this topic. If there was a working rom out there I'd flash to it just to tinker around with since I've never used symbian. That said, I'm more excited about android progress (Even more so about W7, fingers crossed that we aren't disappointed), and totally fine with wm6.5.3 for day to day use until my next device.
android lets you customize the look and feel as much if not more than windows mobile, supports multiple devices and different resolutions, and lets you install programs outside the app store. thats why i think its most like windows mobile. it has the bonus of looking good and having lots of apps like iphone os. which is all why im most excited about it. i think it still feels a little bare but its getting developed fast.
The last time i really liked Symbian, it was called EPOC on my good old Psion Series 5mx, it had great community and support, nowadays symbian is just a crippled platform that mostly Nokia uses. I think its too late for them to go open source, it should have happened years ago...
I just hope that WM7 will be as good as Win7 after the good old matured XP

Win6.5 is way to buggy. This is what almost kept me from getting a new Windows Phone. Plus the market place is closed. I have been using a windows based phone for years and you really have to be a guy that loves to tinker with programming on the regular.

Exactly. You have to tinker with WM a lot, but once you do, and if oyu do it right, you have a powerful and snappy smartphone for a nice price nowdays. Mine is not buggy at all. Far less then some Android phones.

WP7 is rally fast in the HD2 & it runs really well, i hope the same can be said for wp8.

why did u say that? hd2 is a legend. born as wp6.5 device, got android port and now upto 4.0.4, lol it is one of the device that actually run 4.0.4 before any other official updates. and it have fully working wp7.5 tango running on it. and is 8779.8 version update( lol i m not sure if any official updates have gone so far). and i am not planning to mention other os's that runs on hd2.
the only thing that hd2 lacks is current dual/quad cores and gpu's. any how it have a descent cpu of 1ghz single core ( functions flawless upto 1.5 ghz oc) and enough gpu to run wp7.5 pretty fast( even hd7 wont run that much fast).
and i am dam sure hd2 will be running wp8 pretty soon.. ( may be before any official wp8 device!!!!!!!)
+1
I seriously doubt it. The devs have moved on to new devices.
Maybe they'll try to port it but it would be a ton of hard work because they switched from Windows CE to Windows 8 kernel. Also, WP7 only got ported because some drivers from Microsoft got "leaked" since Microsoft were using the HD2 to develop WP7 anyway.
But hey, never say never!
hd2 wp8
I personally think there will be Windows phone 8 interface to HD2
Thread cleaned.
Watch the attitude...
We won't see WP8 for the venerable HD2 because of the simple fact that WP8 has a new kernel. So you would have to rewrite every driver of each hardware component like CPU, Radio, GPU, Wifi, Bluetooth etc. And I really doubt someone will accomplish that.
Guys Just relax,There's DFT
I belive there will be a new MAGLDR version when wp8 is on the way of HD2.
Lets see. How it goes

Yes the HD2 has been seen running test versions of WP8.
The important question is whether it will be possible to flash it in such a way to make it run on the HD2 once WP8 is out.
MS is very keen on the secure boot feature of the new snapdragon chips which is partly why we won't see WP8 for our current devices.
I hope someone with more knowledge can elaborate on this´.
The chip is called TPM which will be responsible for the secure boot procedure.
http://wmpoweruser.com/trusted-platform-modulethe-secret-of-microsofts-attack-on-rim/
Despite all aspects, if look on new HTC devices specification, clearly HD2 if good enough to run WP8. Spec is same like low new model.
It is just up to guys from Dark Force and others.
Hey guys, as my colleague has already stated above, please watch the attitude and show each other some respsect.

Hey guys, do you think it is worth to buy a HD2 now? I really miss the WM, but I like the WP too, mostly because I already got used with it.
Can the HD2 dual-boot WM and WP? Would not be kinda late to buy one?
Since my 200Mhz Gene is almost useless, and my Lumia won't be upgraded to WP8 anyway, I thought it is a good ideia. What you think?
Thanks.

Since my 200Mhz Gene is almost useless, and my Lumia won't be upgraded to WP8 anyway, I thought it is a good ideia. What you think?
Thanks.

Absolutely. It's one of the best Windows mobile 6 devices, and it also runs Android (as a joke, you can even run WM7 on it, but the worst part of censorship is *******************).

And it actually shipped with WM5.x... At least my Telstra HD2 I bought for AT&T did. It's probably the most versatile phone ever made.

The OP asks if the HD2 can possibly run WP8. In case you weren't paying attention before launching your tirade, the HD2 is a Windows MOBILE device. As in, started life as a WM6.1 phone and is the only device that has been modified to run Android AND WP7 successfully. It is not a stretch to think that some clever devs will try to do it, purely for ****s and giggles. Forget about different kernels and any other obstacles, that is irrelevant. Being able to proclaim "I did it!" is satisfaction enough.
Good thing hackers don't all think like you, there would never have been an xda.
i remember that when WP7 launched,,some ppl said "WP7 wont work on HD2 cuz hardware stuck, new file structure bla bla bla,,, " ,, now when i see ppl talking about WP8 wont work on HD2 cuz new kernel and bla bla,, its being funny... This is XDA,, dont be precise when you talking about "hacking"... i am sure if XDA devs want to make it works on HD2 they will do it,, remember Android and WP7 on HD2 process.. yes devs move to new devices,, yes HD2 is pretty old,, but HD2 is a legend,, i can tell that some devs gonna try just because its HD2... wm6.5 wp7 and android,, why not WP8??
Because WP8 is a completely different OS, altogether.
Giving it to current devices as a scaled version as 7.8 is the most they could do.
Now, its a OS, proper modding and changes could get it to the HD2 or even the current devices, except the GPU rendering, its too much for a single core.
The most you will get is the HS and integrated stuff, you wont be able to play the games WP8 devices can play!
this is still a 50:50 thought.
Wp8 HD2
Can't wait to see new WP8 on the history making HD2! Hopefully..

Hey all is it just me or are the Microsoft apps getting much better now (i do mean android versions and i dont mean windows os)
They look and run so nice on my nexus.... i know can not believe i just said that myself
what u guys think ?
Why does your subject line read "Windows"? It should just say Microsoft. MS does make software for many different operating systems.

Its one of the best and the most stable OS around, the trouble is that nobody wants it (or MS can`t sell it)
Got their mail app, onenote and onedrive.... they work great and look great on android i have never used a newer windows phone (or os or whatever u want to call it, still windows in my eyes) so i wonder if they look and feel like that on their own os.

I had some windows phones and the OS is very efficient and works fluid and fast even with a 2 cored cpu. Android is much more power and RAM hungry then WP8.1 or iOS.
thanks for the feedback mate
