I got some water on my G1 (possibly crept in through the slide mechanism) and I have this (unique) problem.
After the water damage the phone did continue working for a few hours before it became unstable and just hung. The "home" key became intermittently unresponsive.
Now, after some time it has gotten into an infinite loop to "recovery mode" screen when rebooting, Alt+L gets me the prompt but Home+power does not reboot, popping the battery brings me back to this screen after the bootup.
Now if we assume that home button is stuck in "on" state this would result in this loop (that is my guess).
I have already attempted reflashing with cupcake (completes successfully and prompt for reboot but I end up again at the recovery screen). I tried getting to RC29 (to ultimately move to Haykuro) with the steps elsewhere in this forum (and many other places on the net) but I cannot get to the boot loader always the recovery screen (camera + power button).
Also attempted wipe several times, the loop persists.
I dont know if the camera button is working, so its possible the the key combo is not getting registered for my bootloader attempt.
Any help on possible things to do is appreciated.
Going to t-mobile is not an option, my friend brought it back from the US and I unlocked it with the intention of development on that platform. I cannot send it back to the US even though it is under warranty, just don't think they'll entertain water-damage.
Hey, I have this same prob. I bought a phone that had been dropped in water for about $50 thinking that since it did get to the T-mobile g1 screen i would be able to get to the recovery utility ( and recover). I could get to the utility but no amount of wiping or flashing worked. I also tried flashing every ota official rom i could get my hands on (since this phone didnt have root). But nothing worked.
At one point i found the official HTC Dream repair manual and posted it in the Dev forum, but who knows if its still there or much like this post, has been moved. Inside the repair manual pdf there is a link that will take you to the HTC RMA III login page. If you can get a user/pass you can prob log in and find the diagnosic prog HTC uses to troubleshoot. I have searched high and low for one of the user/pass but only found a couple that had already been closed. So maybe you could try to find a user/pass, get the diagnostic prog, make a G1/Dream gold card sd, fix your phone and help the whole forum. I dont think anyone has a copy of the diagnostic yet, or at least i havent seen it.
Let me know if you are able to find a work around. I have already completely taken the phone apart to use as spare parts, but I can always reassemble!
Went through the service manual, I tried to do a soft reset (never got to the prompt). Next, I attempted hard reset (home + back + power) and I reach the prompt that says "press send to start factory reset", but nothing happens when I press the "call" button (assuming "send" is same as "call").
I will attempt to look through the net a bit more and if nothing comes up I am thinking of opening up the phone and see if I can do something to the buttons in case they are internally jammed.
Thanks for your help though!
I need help with this as well!

I have this same problem!
Is there a way we can remove Recovery mode
or disable the home key somehow?
on a water damaged phone you have ONE and ONLY ONE choice. you have to take the phone apart.
first make sure to get the service manual and it will show you how to take the phone apart properly, then you'll need a large bowl of rubbung alcohol(or some other volatile solvent)
take each piece of the phone apart and dip in the alcohol for several seconds completely submerging it, then take 10-15 minutes SCRUBBING the piece from every possible angle with a toothbrush. when you have finished each piece set on a clean towel or dry rag. repeat for all pieces of the phone.
then take a hair dryer and set it to low and dry the pieces of the phone for about an hour(or you can let sit for a day) and be sure to flip the pieces over halfway to ensure full drying. i have used this approach on many phones(one of which being a phone i found at the bottom of a lake). i am not promising that this will fix your phone as you probably shorted out a few circuits when you continued to use the phone, but it will help as long as nothing has short circuited
Same problem..
I'm also having the same problem... Any Solution ??
Hope is always an option. Testing is a SOLUTION!!!
I have the same problem with the home key being stuck after humidity entered my phone. Which boots me straight to recovery mode. I have managed to recover my phone with the following steps:
YOU MUST HAVE ADB AND FASTBOOT INSTALLED IN YOUR PC!!!
1) If your phone has the home button stuck, you can't update or confirm anything with the Cyanogen Recovery! Because you need the Home button to confirm. So you must revert your Recovery back to JF's Recovery to use the recovery properly in this case.
2) I have tried for weeks to make the system bypass the recovery and have succeeded. YOU MUST REBOOT YOUR PHONE FROM RECOVERY TO BOOTLOADER. So use ADB to reboot in to Bootloader mode ( adb shell reboot bootloader ). Now that your in Bootloader mode, use the FASTBOOT commands ( fastboot reboot ) and voila, it bypasses the recovery.Make a script on your Winbows or Linux to make it as easy as one click!
Before you disassemble try this.
Take off the back and remove the battery. Take out the sdcard. Put the phone, all opened up, in a ziplock bag full of uncooked rice. Leave it in there for 24 hours. Put it back together and 99 times out of 100 this will fix your problem. The rice is dry, like really dry and will suck the moisture right out of there. It is also dirt cheap.
Good luck.
Thanks, But Unfortunately my message got noticed a bit too late
My phone is working fine since the last month ..
@RichiDaze
Unfortunately m my phone was unrooted , without terminal in the stock recovery console, so i could not use ADB...
@Billquinn1
Would have helped if moisture had not corroded my connectors....
But Thanks for your replies...Hope it helps people having similar problems ..
What i ended up doing was taking a safety pin and started scraping(gently) the non shiny parts of the connector ( daughter board to main board) .
I think it was previously shorted near that area , so by scraping removed the shorted metal joints ..
The Recovery problem did not reoccur since then

I'd suggest you make a full backup and hard reset the device in order to make sure its not a hardware problem. If it works fine after a hard reset, you'll know its something you installed relatively recently.
I did a hard reset.nothing changed.then i flashed a different ROM.But still i am facing the problem.
Try the following:
Get a can of canned Air and blow it on the button as it might move any debris that are there. Just make sure that the phone is off and the battery is out. KEEP THE AIR STREAM AWAY FROM THE SCREEN! If any of the propellant escapes while you spray, it can freeze the LCD. Just slide it open and stick some paper on top of the screen. Wait a few moments before you switch the device back on
If this doesn't work, flash the Kaiser with its original ROM and SPL just in case there is an odd interaction somewhere. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=418375
If nothing of the above work, you have two options:
a. If the device is in warranty, return it and get it fixed or replaced. Make sure is has its original ROM/SPL loaded before you do.
b. If the device is out of warranty/you don't care about the warranty, you can try to open it up and see if something is blocking the switch. There are instructions floating around here somewhere.
EDIT: Added warning regarding the propelant and the LCD
Any update here? My tilt is doing the exact same thing
alt236 pretty much said all there was to it. Hard reset, restore stock ROM, try blowing the switch, if all fails send for repair.
Did all of the above and the cost of repair is not worth it. Time to toss my kaiser I guess
yesterday my tytn2 started to act crazy, i didn't drop it or installed any new software.
the screen started to turn on on his own, front buttons stopped working accept the center button witch now opens the start menu.
when i open the keyboard the fn light is on and the keyboard doesn't work.
when i write the sms message trough touchscreen the backspace isn't working so i can't delete misspelled words.
the photo button and power button on left side still working fine.
all the applications work fine, and i can make calls trough touch screen.
i can't make hard reset because front buttons wont respond.
is anybody had similar problems or have the solution.
my guarantee is gone so i hope this is software problem.
Try doing a battery pull and letting your phone sit like that for a minute, put the battery back in, and see what happens...
It sounds like you have water damage to your phone, though. Every take it in the bathroom with you while you shower? The steam in the air is a sure fire way to get water damage, and it will take time to show, but eventually circuits rust and stop working and you end up with a lot of random problems, and usually all of a sudden you have a lot of major problems.
well, i can't remmeber that i had carry it in the bathroom while showering.
i pulled out the battery, waited for about 5 mins and when i put it back nothing has changed. thanks for the tip.
is there a way to do a hard reset without pushing the front buttons?

look in the wiki for a detail of all the ways you can perform a hard reset (i believe there are at least THREE ways)
METHOD 1: the one you are looking for (because your buttons don't work) can be triggered by going to Settings->System->Clear Storage (assuming your phone still boots up and the touchscreen is usable)
METHOD 2: when the phone is POWERED OFF:
1. stick the stylus in the soft reset hole and hold it there
2. hold down the two soft keys
3. press the power button
if you try METHOD 2 and if it works, then you can safely assume that your soft keys are working and that it is indeed a software issue.
i used METHOD 1 and did a hard reset.
nothing has changed, front buttons and keyboard still refuses to work.
unfortunatly it seems it is a hardwer problem so i'm going to take it to the service.
thank you for helping me.
Hello
I've got my greedy hands on G1. Phone was free so I can't loose on that lol. Gal who gave it to me said that all it does for her when she powers it up is going into Hboot screen I applied dreaimg.nbh, got it to boot into rc29 and realized that I had no simcard in it. I powered it off, put sim in it and powered it back on and now I'm looking at Hboot screen again. I can boot into recovery just fine though but selecting reboot from that menu takes me back to rainbow. I can also reboot with 3-finger salute but again, it takes me to Hboot.
I have a feeling that this is a problem with camera button rather then software, did anyone fix this successfuly? Is there a way to physicaly disconnect camera button from main motherboard? Any insight is appreciated.
I'm not a noob, I can troubleshoot software issues but i've never taken this phone apart so I'm clueless.
Thanks in advance.
Ok, so I found this thread and I guess there's no easy way to just disconnect camera button. I still would like to know if anyone recovered from such a problem. Thank you in advance.
I have not taken the G1 apart, but I was a hardware troubleshooter for much of my professional career. My first guess is that the button is stuck not shorted. Always try the simple things first. Look at the button cover, does it protrude from the case slightly, or does it look pressed in. Even if the button cover is not pressed it, it is possible the button itself is stuck. in this case, tap it against a hard surface a few times. Hey it was a free (broken) phone, what have you got to loose. You can probably tap what would seem to be a little too hard without hurting it. If that doesn't work, then you may need to take the phone apart and check the button state. Does it push in, pop back out. If not you may be able to physically pull the button back out. If it does, then it's possible the button is messed up/shorted inside. By the looks of the pictures, the only fix is to unsolder the button.
Those are the steps I would take. Always start simple and work up from there. And always be open to something that seems unrelated that you may find along the path but ends up being the problem.
Hope it helps

I don't have t5/t6 screwdrivers handy so I did not quite take it apart. I did nowever pry the camera button (plastic part of it) out slightly, enough to see inside. I found that the actual button does work, i.e. it goes in and pops out on it's own. I tried tapping it as well, harder then most people would probably. Still the same problem. Oh well, I have one more trick up my sleeve. When I got the phone it was super cold because it was left in the car overnight (way below freezing temps, those MN winters you know) so may be I can do it again... who knows, like you said, what do I have to loose?
Thank you for your opinion.
This is a somewhat strange problem that I have, I've got a G1 which has none of the front keys working, other than the trackball. No talk, home, back, or end keys. The only way I've gotten it to boot is to plug it in and insert the battery, which causes it to power on. I got it from a friend who replaced it with a MyTouch3G.
I've been using this phone for the last few days, it is my backup (other than a RAZR...). It was still on 1.6, with a build of DRC83. It was kind of difficult to use without those buttons, but I could use the keyboard search button to just search for whatever app I wanted to run and switch apps that way. I previously had a B&N Nook, and I remembered that SoftKeys worked on it since it had a lack of hardware buttons, so I started using it, although only the home button worked without root. All of the tutorials I could find stated that I needed RC29 or lower to root (I assume they're all old) but I finally figured out that UniversalAndroot would do the trick.
I should have just been happy with that, but the phone had no more room for apps, and I was hoping to use Apps2SD, so I flashed ClockworkRecovery, downloaded CM6.1, and attempted to flash it, which now has me stuck in a boot loop at the 'ANDROID' text logo. I can get into fastboot (the camera button works). But since the home button is inop, that's my only option. Is there anyway to reset or restore the phone via fastboot? I've read that I can restore a nandroid backup that way, but for some reason the nandroid backup I made didn't save on my SD card (it must've crashed or failed to write or something). Is there any way to get another image to flash via fastboot? I couldn't find a stock image or anything. Am I just stuck? I thought about getting a broken phone off of eBay and replacing the buttons, is that my only option?
Thanks for everything you guys do on here, you all are the best!
is the button completely inop? what is your phone stats? radio, hboot etc...? i have a un-root method but you need recovery so i guess you cant do that... im not to sure about fastboot i will check for you though...

Yes, all the buttons are completely inop. I disassembled the phone earlier and found the culprit.... the connection port on the daughter board which the input module plugs into has been sheared off of the daughter board (the board which houses the micro sd card port, the USB port, and connects to the input module, and which sits underneath the button assembly). Before disassembling it, I ordered a new input module membrane off of eBay, but it now seems likely that I won't need it. I'm not sure if there is a way to re-solder the port back onto the board, but I doubt it would work and my soldering skills aren't exactly the greatest. This of course makes perfect sense, since the trackball was the only part working; it connects directly to the daughter board, bypassing that broken port. So, in the meantime, I'll work on getting a broken G1 off of eBay and hope that it doesn't have a messed up daughter board.
Basically, if there was a way that I could get into recovery, I'd be good to go, but I can't. A few other things I've found by searching: apparently fastboot is accessed by holding the back key while booting? I was booting while holding the camera button, I had just tried it and assumed that it was the same thing. I noticed that it didn't seem to actually be in fastboot when I connected it to my computer (fastboot devices didn't show anything). So I might just be 100% stuck until I get the buttons fixed. I did see a version of Amon_Ra recovery that used the Menu button as an alternative to the Home button for confirmation, which was made for somebody with a broken Home button, however, even if I could manage to flash that recovery, I don't think it's possible to boot into the recovery with the keyboard Menu button.
I'll post the phone stats I get on Camera+Power On once I put the phone back together tomorrow. Thanks for the help!
My wife Nokia 7 Plus was found in download mode (white screen with Android One logo) and is stuck in this mode. I've never done any unlock bootloader or root or anything on it (thus I did on other phones so I'm not totally stranger to it) and I'm 100% sure she didn't tried anything strange either. The phone is completely stock and probably with the last update as it went back new from repair a few months ago (for screen brightness issue) and I did update everything possible before she used it again.
The phone start automatically and immediately I see the white screen with AndroidOne logo and after a few ms it refresh and it's the same screen with the back text "Download mode" at the top.
I've tried to force shutdown and reboot by long pressing power. I cannot keep it shutdown, it goes back to Download Mode screen.
I've tried to restart start with power + vol up or power + vol down, power + vol up + vol down. Same.
I've tried to let it die on battery, charge it, and here it's a black screen with the large battery logo and a white text at the top saying: Download mode. After a few minute I try to boot and it's back to the white screen.
What can I tried next before I send it back for repair and it will be probably wiped again...
Side story, I've almost force her to switch from iPhone to Android because of price of the devices, and so far she is not converted at all with all the trouble we got with this Nokia.
As last before send to service try wipe in recovery, if not boot to recovery via buttons, try if your download mode is recognised by fastboot and reboot to recovery using: fastboot reboot AND IMMEDIATELY HOLD BUTTONS POWER and VOLUP until show "green android icon with no command

I'm having the same problem. Exactly what you said. I didn't root my device or even attempt to do anything. I bought Nokia because they were purely stock and delivered some quality mobile phones. I've got only this phone as my daily driver. So tell me if you have got the issue fixed and how much did it cost and how long it took. It's been stuck with that 'android one' logo and a small message that reads 'Download mode' on top. I've tried everything. And what I'm worried about is, my phone's out of warranty and I'm a student. I hope you got it fixed for some reasonable cost. Please reply to me ASAP.
My wife's phone also has had this exact same problem.
I have tried all the tricks mentioned above including ADB mode (it could not find the phone).
The phone is supposed to be under warranty. So I took it back to the place of purchase.
However, the phone has a tiny crack in the corner of the screen which my wife and I were not aware of. So Nokia have indicated that unless I get the crack fixed, the warranty is voided and they will not fix the boot problem.
Because the broken crack is not covered by warranty, Nokia want $270 for a new screen before they will look at the software problem caused by the pie update.
I took it to a third party repair shop to see if there is a cheaper option. They cannot fix it either.
So the 5 month old Nokia phone is now useless.
But if anyone can comes across a solution for this, can they please post it here.
Thanks.
Same here. I told the guy on the phone about the crack. But he told me it should not be a problem. Now I got an email that I needed to pay 185 euro's to repair the screen.
Because of their FW-update, my phone became unuseful.
When I get it back (not repaired) I will try a OST on it.
I solved my issue via this procedure:

My Nokia 7 Plus got stuck in download mode after accidently pressing all buttons simu
Yes I know that sounds like a weird title and maybe you are wondering why did I do that? notice the word accidently.
I was just trying to fly my newly bought drone x pro for the first time and the controller has a little pull out extendable cradle to hold the phone in
if you want to view what the FPV camera is viewing while in flight and because of the bad design with all buttons on the same side of the Nokia 7 plus, unbeknownst to me all 3 buttons were being pressed at the same time and before I knew it my phone was shutting down and rebooting to this ridiculous download mode and the rest is history!
So I just thought I would mention this to anyone who happened to or happens to land in the same situation as me to be aware that you should probably put a little bit of sponge taped to the side of your phone over the volume buttons to possibly prevent it from being pressed simultaneously when flying your fpv drone.
If all else fails you could always connect the drone to your phone and then just put your phone in your pocket and fly blind by simply walking with the drone or rather running since they are pretty nippy. I am a bit bummed as this would have been a very convenient way of checking how full my guttering is of leaves without having to climb a ladder every time to check!?
Anyway I also used the fix here: https://www.techmesto.com/possible-fix-nokia-smartphone-stuck-on-download-mode-after-ota-update/
after downloading the nokia phone drivers from github.
If you are on windows 10 pro you may get a screen protector warning not to proceed further?
Ignore it and continue installing the drivers!
So far I got the Nokia Logo back and then it just hung there for several minutes without being recognised by the pc.
So I simply disconnected the phone from the pc and suddenly got the familiar nokia tone start up but then black screen again.
I realised it had been on the download mode so long it had completely drained the battery so now I am charging it.
Fingers crossed when I power up again I will at least have my phone back, sadly minus the data. (I will of course at least have all my google notes and contacts etc backed up to google servers at least they are useful for something!!)
I can't recall the last time I used it but I am pretty sure I had the SD card set as the main download so hopefully fingers crossed that data should have remained untouched, not sure how Android sets this up anymore?
Long time since gingerbread when you could still install and run apps as a completely separate partition.
All became a bit confusing after that so rooting became something I did hesitantly and as a definite last resort!
Anyway I am rambling on. If I find the fix works I will let you know.
Thanks for reading and thanks in advance if the fix works !!:good::good:

So it worked, I have my phone back! Thank you so much for this solution!
Sadly my SD card was wiped too!!!!! super pissed off about this, many photos and notes and other files that I will never get back unless if I recall I may have made a manual backup of at least some of the earlier stuff I put on here a few months back on my pc?
Nokia will be hearing from me for sure!!!!! I want a 50% refund for messing with my life and my time. How can they send an update that essentially breaks a phone for a bit!???!!!!!!
