Paid apps in Canada - G1 Apps and Games

So it seems like the Android Market paid apps will be a while until it comes to canada, so I was wondering if there is anyone out there (using a g1 in the US on T Mobile) whom I could pay the price of an app, and would be willing to purchase the app, and pass the apk onto me.
Has anyone done this?

Anyone in Canada get this "Market Enabler" to work?

yes i have .....and it works perfectly

Yea... didn't work. It says "doing root stuff" briefly then it says "huston we have a problem" then says "done! "
ARRRRRRRRGH! Yet another reason why our candian devices need ROOT.

Hold on...Don't you need root first of all to even use the Market Enabler application?

is there an option out there for market-enabler for non-root users?

NO there is not Why not just root your phone? Come on it's loads of fun!

Canadian users that got their HTC devices from Rogers (canadian network) cannot as of yet root their htc devices.
Rooting is being worked on at the moment.

Root apps in market

Ok so I don't have root access because I accidentally hit yes one day but oh well. I'm seeing all these apps coming out for users with root access when i started thinking why if google doesn't want us to have root access do they allow apps in the market specifically for root access users? It makes no sense and is a complete contradiction!
google doesn't mind us having root access, t-mobile minds it, so together with google, they prevent it on the G1... dont link google android with the g1 like that.. google wants us to have root on android to make things better (thats what linux is all about) tmobile wants to block that access.
Not allowing root access prevents people who don't understand linux commands from entering the wrong command thus rendering their phone unusable. These are the people that have the potential to create a nightmare for Tmobile. If you have root access and you know how to use it, then it is not a problem.
We are screwed if we patched our phones basically.
Hopefully these programs will come soon for non-root phones.

Just putting this out there, when i first got my G1 i rooted it. When t-mobiles app "MyAccount" came out i installed it but it would not load it said this android ver not supported. so i called up tmo for basic support thinking maybe its my account or something. So the rep asked me if i was rooted, i figured what the hell, so i said yes i was rooted and running a hacked rom, they said "ok we would like to support rooted phones as well" they also asked where i got the rom or which one was it, i played dumb on this i just said some made up rom name. so long story short, sure enough a couple weeks later there was an update and the myaccount app worked. I gotta give them credit for that. I was tempted to ask how they feel about wifi tether for root users, lol. i didn't wanna rock the boat.
Root is meant for people who know what they are doing and for developers.

Why did the phone come from? Is it stock, unaltered from a phone company or retail store or what?
I have never heard of a stock phone without the market app. However, you should be able to flash an appropriate dev ROM for your phone (need to figure out if it is 32A or 32B), or flash a standard ROM.
You could just load the market apk but if that is missing I would really wonder what else is missing.
If your carrier does not have paid apps, then you can use Market Enabler to access them.
I have the same problem. Just received it as a gift that was purchased from www.blueflymobile.com and it seems that the Android Market is the only app that is missing. Why would they take it out???
Yeah my phone was the same, and the android market app is closed source and isn't readily available for download either. The dev guys may know how to inject one into your existing install, but it's probably easier to just flash your phone with one of the ROMs in development forum.

Had the same frustration about the missing market on my mobile. Seems like the missing market on the first non-google-branded HTC android mobiles is mainly caused by a missundestanding between google and HTC. Hopefully they set things straight and updates will be available soon which include the market. But then its good that we got some elite hackers/developers here on XDA
I had the same problem.
I flashed my phone last week to the newest rom update of cyanogen.
All works perfect now!!!!!
Sorry if i keep repeating the same problem as previous user. Im actually having the missing android market application aswell. I bought this from eBay UK from company called Elcell(www.elcell.co.uk). Turned out that it doesnt have any market, not even a single google application installed - just a plain htc phone with basic stuff. I'm just hoping someone would actually guide me a step by step on how to get Android Market manually because I've been looking for this for long time. I really really need help, please any expert people from this forum.
Airtel India Magics have no google apps either
I bought my Magic 32A from India Airtel. Guess what? No google apps there either and a perfected SPL which meant I had no way of flashing a replacement. I ordered a second HTC Magic 32A from the states and it had no google apps either.
Only way I have found to get the market on the phone is to reflash stuff. I don't believe the market can be packaged up like many of the other apps. There are alternatives like slideme.org which offers a "market-like" experience. They even have a agent you can install to quickly download and install apps.
But as nice as slideme could become; its nothing like the market. For the airtel India Magic phones, one is kinda stuck until getting the phone redone. There are some nice Hero ROMs out now.
For those who don't want to flash a cooked rom should get an official update from HTC soon if not already out. Seems like HTC and google cleared out the misunderstandings and future Android mobiles from HTC should ALL have the market installed. So the 32A models will be able to enjoy the google apps as well as exchange

Rooted Android phones missing some paid apps in market

I was researching a problem I have been having installing an app I paid for on Google Market after flashing my G1 to Eclair. At first I thought it had to do with comparability but after checking out the apps site I founf out it was compatible. Then I found this on Google's support forum.
Hi All,
As a follow-up to Rajesh's post, rooted devices are different from unlocked devices. Rooted devices should not expect to see forward locked applications. Unlocked devices (meaning not linked to a mobile service provider) should have access to these applications. We're very much aware of issues around the Motorola Milestone and I'll be certain to share updates once they are available.

Dontae

It seems that Forward locked apps will not be available to rooted phones. Anyone know a work around or even how to tell if an app you have is forward locked?
thanks,
-tj
You need the right stuff in the build.prop file so the phone identifies itself as one that has full paid app access.
You could probably do a google search for something like "adp1 protected apps" or "adp1 paid apps" and you'll find a lot of reference to the same phenomenon.

Will Amazon Android Market work without root?

Has anyone seen an indication as to whether the new Amazon download market is going to work on an AT&T Captivate without a root and sideloading enabled/.
Would like to know this as well... my guess is we'll have to wait until it's live to know for sure.

The state of Android Market for International users

I currently have a Xoom Wi-fi being used here in the Caribbean (Netherlands Antilles) and the state of Android Market simply makes it unusable, even when using USA VPN Connection.
I did find a solution here in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065698 (a combination of root + build.prop of a verizon xoom)
But what about using the Xoom without root? For the normal user. Let's say I decide I want to sell the Xoom, for a normal user it would appear to be simply unusable, unable to buy or download a good junk of apps. Without all this tinkering I would constantly get: "The requested app could not be found" or cannot be installed on your device to cannot be installed on your carrier. My country seems to be supported: http://www.google.com/support/androidmarket/developer/bin/answer.py?answer=138294 , but after asking some devs to enable an app in my market, most tell you that they made it available to ALL markets already. Especially this part I find particularly troubling as the devs clearly want to maximize their sales and make it available in as many countries as possible, yet for my country (and many others) where supposedly even paid apps are enabled, we cannot download/pay for them.
My question is basically isn't there an easy way around all of this, without root, basically in an out-of-box state? I guess this is also a cautionary tale that without all this tinkering/rooting....a wifi Xoom is pretty much usless in certain markets.
I Hear u on this! I Wrote to google asking about this situation, but havent got any replies yet!.
They have a form to contact them in the market help!.
(Venezuela here)
THe list of countries we are given to deploy to as a dev is not exhaustive, if it's not in the list, there is nothing we can do about deploying there (as developers) it's up to google to sort out whatever problem it is thats keeps your country off the list.

According to the list my country falls in "Rest of the world" and has support for both free and paid apps. So I don't understand what's the problem.
Also as a dev, i think it's important for you guys, as I know many international users would like to buy certain apps, which is a huge untapped market, all potential sales going to waste.

yes, it's very true, so which country are you in? I don't know which list you are looking at, but I'm looking at the list that is presented to me when I upload an application for sale on the market, I have to select countries and prices, with, by default, every country is selected.
Im located in Netherlands Antilles (Not Netherlands) I'm looking at this list: http://www.google.com/support/androidmarket/developer/bin/answer.py?answer=138294
Venezuela is Also in the List! so i dont know what its the problem =S

Well, I just checked the market dev account for hte company I work for and our product is currently available in Netherlands Antilles, tell me if you see anyhting on the market from "Zubadoo", if not, then it's a Google problem, because you are certainly listed in one of the countries that can purchase our products.

Yup, they allow me to purchase your content. But like you said, it's a problem with Google, especially when the dev has enabled the apps in all markets and the market allows for paid apps, yet you can't download or buy them. Very frustrating.

So are you saying that even though you can see our apps, and others, you can't download/buy them? Including ours that you can see?
Actually its not such a big issue. I bought a Xoom wifi from the US. I live in the UAE and initially I had the same issues though Market access worked fine. Now though after using the update and getting to 3.1 even that isn't needed my Xoom is recognized a Verizon Xoom (since I used the US wifi files).
PS: UAE isn't on any of the lists :0) there might not be an official solution but there sure is a work around.
Cheers.

Yours works, but in some cases of games like riptide it simply didnt allow it.
I had to root and do some stuff to allow it. Which means Google/Market has a few problems

How come your Xoom is seen as a verizon? Isn't it a WIFI unit? Did you do anything special?
Just used BRD's method and I am guessing those files were specifically for the Verizion wifi device.

Link? Does it require root?
Yes, even market access requires root.
