Sorry but I think your phone is bricked =[ Try calling T-mobile and tell them you dropped your phone and broke it. (You might actually want to do this, lol) They'll send you a replacement if you still have the warranty

thanks you for your rapid ask, but i sure , exist a solution for the brick.
my phoneis not guaranteed because I bought it used
SNIFFF
There's no current solution for a brick. A brick is a brick and you're done. Sorry
I had the same issued as you are having i was also stuck on the t-mobile logo screen because of the radio update, and yes my phone got brick. but since i had insurance on the phone i took it to my local t-mobile made up some excuse that my phone stop working and they gave me a brand new one in store for free. gotta love the extra at 5 dollars you pay for insurance saved me from buying a new one lol.
Yup, you've got a brick. Most common brick actually, downgrading radio 9/10 times seems to leed to a brick. Currently there are no working fixes. There are rumors that either a serial->USB cable might help fix a brick or wiring up a jtag setup. There's info about both on the interwebs but neither has been proven to work on the dream yet afaik.
Here is my question. What were you doing before the brick happened? By chance did you install the special spl?

This is horeible advice you never want to tell them you droped the phone, that's not covered under warranty. Just tell them the phone won't boot. But yeah sound like your phone is fubar.

How is it bad advice? Hardware problems are covered by warranty, software are not. the brick is a SOFTWARE problem. T-Mobile does not give replacement g1s that are screwed up because of something you installed that wasn't issued by T-Mobile themself. If you tell them you dropped it , its a HARDWARE problem and they provide replacements...

Telling them you dropped the phone and it no longer boots is your problem and they will say so. "Was it working before you dropped it?" Yes it was "Then it soulds like when "YOU" dropped the phone you messed it up" Hope you have the phone insurance that's the only way you are most likely going to get a new one but it's going to cost you.
While it's a software problem if you drop the phone and break it they do not have to replace it.

Oh god, fine then. You come up with a better story and post back I don't understand your last sentence...In the official tmobile g1 forums they state that they are not responsible for anything you do software wise to your phone ( root, ROMs, spl, brick, etc..)

simple The OTA got to you for cupcake and you went to install it when the phone rebooted it was stuck at the G1 screen. they will walk you through a few steps and confirm it's messed up. At that point they will send you out a replacement. You do not have to say anything about it being rooted. I just did this for my friends moms phone. He messed it up I called and got her a replacement sent. Now if you are not a T-mo customer you are out of luck though which sucks :/
Hell I had to do this for 2 phones. 1 G1 and 1 Shadow this past week (both phones were modded by me/friend) Shadow was a true hardware issue though and not the mods fault though.
just tell them your phone wont boot up if you cant get to recovery or android screen neither can they on your phone so they will never know what u did to it

Lol okay then. Still think that if you report a hardware issue like you broke it, T-Mobile will still replace it as long as you still have the 1 year warranty that came with it. Like Cyanogen's issue where his touchscreen was messedup. HARDWAREE issue and T-Mobile replaced it

I work for T-mobile and telling them you broke the hardware on the phone is NOT covered under warranty. The manufacture's warranty only covers phone defects not people dropping their phone. A touch screen going out is an example of hardware covered under warranty. Software is covered under warranty as well and all you have to say is the phone won't boot past the G1 screen. Thats all you have to say.
All right. I rest my case then O mighty T-Mobile worker. No sarcasm haha.
Yeah its true, you do have to be careful if you plan on using the warranty route if its not totally legit, but then I suppose it differs depending on region. Over here in the UK it covers quite a few things like accidental dropping of the mobile, water damage etc. Which reminds me, I need to add my mobile to my monthly insurance policy...
The insurance isn't really worth it =/ Even if you claim it you still have to pay 130$ here in NY
Blimey... I pay £6/m (thanks to my credit card policies) instead of the usual £9/m that covers the mobile phone over accidental damage, theft, water damage, software damage etc. However if I do make a claim I think its £30-£40 for a replacement G1.
HELP! Is my g1 bricked?
After reading a few other thread I believe my g1 is bricked.
I was trying to install Superhero G3. After installing the radio provided in this thread:
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f56/official-hero-g3-build-rom-18471/
My phone hung at the T-Mobile g1 boot logo.
I can't get into recovery or anything.
I bought the phone from craigslist, so I don't have a warranty or anything. My parents would kill me if they found out I have to buy myself a new phone.
PLEASE I hope there is something I can do to fix this.
Related
If this has been discussed, please pardon me.
If i purchased the G1 a few months ago, does it come with a 1 year warranty by default or was an insurance necessary?
I was told the latter by a friend of mine, but he seems to be a total newb at his g1, i cant trust him.
1yr through HTC, which TMo honors, I believe.

So if i call t-mobile and say.. I restarted my phone and an update notification came up, applied the update and phone didn't boot, would i get a replacement? I'm not a big fan of scratches and dents.

If you bought this phone through T-Mobile, then yes. This is commonly what people do when they have bricked their phone--I'm assuming you have.
Remember kids, it's Radio first then SPL!
And I would have to send the "bricked" phone back?
Comes with the warranty, but that only covers a faulty phone or parts I believe. With insurance you could purposely smash it with a hammer and it would be covered, after a deductible of course.

Well, duh. If they let you keep it every customer would call and say they had a broken phone just so they could get another one for free!
You will be sent what is called a 'shell' which is just the phone; No battery, back cover, sdcard, anything.
You replace your borked phone and ship them back the bricked 'shell'.
Why not call them now? Pop your fraudulently-bricked-phone-returned-under-warranty cherry.

LOL if I do call and have them send me the shell, I'll probably brick the thing on purpose.
Thanks all.
ok, to make it easier to explain, I made a video. Sorry for talking so low.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypQBEARaw9E
I recorded that with my G1, the "broken" G1 is my brothers.
We have a serious problem, we cannot exchange it, we bought it last week and since we bought it has been having problems. We were going to take it to the store and then yesterday morning, it was like that, it was working "fine" at night. The problem is that we took it to the store, and the "dot" behind the battery is red, which "means" it got wet... but it didn't, I'm not going to lie, it didn't get wet my brother has taken care of that phone more than anything, it still has all the plastic protectors, even if the phone was acting really weird...
Ok ok, to the point. It doesn't do anything, as you saw in the video, when you press the power button the buttons flash until I depress it, and then they just stay on. The same happens when I try going into recovery, or bootloader modes, nothing... I decided to leave it like that for a few hours, nothing.
Either the device is bricked, the screen is damaged, or the whole device is screwed.... What do you guys think??
Thanks in advance.

It could very well be all 3. Did you guys get this from T-Mobile?
The dot in the battery compartment of my phone is red (well, orange I supposed) and my phone has never been wet and is working fine. I'd argue the case if I were you.

Dave

Yes we did get it directly from a (official) T-Mobile store (not a 3rd party retailer).. we went there and they complained about the phone "getting wet"... the phone looks perfect and never gotten wet.

I am going to argue, I already started arguing by calling tmobile directly but they *****ed about why didnt i take the phone within the 14-day warranty if it was giving me issues and waited for this to happen....... they couldn't do anything, whatever, I'm going to try to take this further because, just like you, I can assure you my phone hasn't gotten wet.
Can you help me an send me a picture of your phone? So I could have some proof, my own phone's dot is white, and some other phones from friends/family are also white...
Thanks!
I've heard stories of that indicator turning red/pink when people have left the phone in the bathroom while showering... supposedly a lot of steam can turn it red.

Yeah they told me about this, and I actually *****ed my brother about this but he doesn't do this, I do, and my phone is fine. Anyways, he told me he just leaves the phone charging in the room while he showers...
So I had to get a new one by claiming the insurance ($130 deductible.....) there was no win for me here...... the only thing was that I was able to keep the damaged phone.
I called HTC to try and figure out how much it would be to fix it. The lady that answered the phone said the symptoms were like those of a bad motherboard, and she said it'd cost me around $475 to fix it, wait, what??.....
So, know, idk what to do with this crap. I might try to repair it.
Thanks anyways guys!

Ah, right. Tell you what... since I'm volunteering my time to trace the circuit and my phone works perfectly, there is nothing for me to gain out of this, so I'm not the one to be asking for money.
If you can't afford it yourself, might be a community thing, but hold off for a while, there is someone else I've been communicating with privately who may be sending a bricked board, if it works out, then I won't need yours.
Ill volunteer a bricked board

Find a broken G1 on eBay or CG and try repairing it yourself. Might run you under $100 to do this and it's probably a great learning experience...not to mention you could end up with another working G1.

there are only 2 radios for the g1 at this time. one of them starts with a one, and the other is the 2.22.19.26I that is required to run the new spl. if there is a link to this rom, and it is the dream forum i would like too see it. if it is not in the dream forums then you should've known better than to flash something to your phone that was not made for it or tested for it. Twisted bricked one of his phones flashing a hero radio.
I hope you still have insurance

Is my phone really broken? Like ill never ever be able to use it again? Is there any way to fix this? Someone told me to press Alt-L because the box with arrows pointing at the screen is the recovery mode screen but when I press Alt-L nothing happens
Those are combined radio and ROMs for the Hero, not Hero ported to the Dream. At the top in big red letters it says:
DO NOT FLASH THESE ON ANYTHING EXCEPT A HERO!

So you flashed a radio not written for your device. Yes, it's a brick, you deserve a brick for completely ignoring the warnings...
I would say take it back to tmo, but as it's not a full brick, but a radio brick, they will know it's not an over the air update that caused it.
What do I tell t-mobile? I bought my phone on ebay..I dont even know if it has insurance or anything and I do not use a data-plan im using a t-mobile prepaid sim.. theres noway for me to fix this?
call HTC and talk to them, they will fix it on your dime. Basically you call them, they will tell you there is a "$29 or less triage fee", and give you an RMA number. Basically what they are saying is, without your approval, the charge to look at it will be less than $29. That includes shipping back to you. I would think a reflash would be a fairly cheap procedure. I have used HTC for repairs before and they really went over and above for me.

Oh, you're not a tmo customer....then they won't replace it for you. Only if you bought it from them. Enjoy your brick.

this is getting a bit old, NO, there is no fix for what you did other than sending it in for repair. Nobody but HTC has the ability to fix your type of brick as of right now.
Ok..can you tell me what I should tell them? My phone is rooted, doesnt that mean they wont accept it?
Worst thing you can do is tell them the phone is rooted. If you've got a data plan and everything with T-Mobile, tell them that you installed an OTA update and that this problem happened.
Last time I had a brick, that's what I told HTC. They fixed it for free, all I had to pay for was the shipping.
I do not have a data plan though..thats the thing im used t-mobile prepaid, so your saying not to tell them that my phone is rooted? Wont they know though?
No, they can't tell. If you don't have a data plan with them, they won't help you. That's what they did to me since I just have a regular plan.
This is when you go to HTC. Find their support number on their website, and call them. They'll give you the address to send it to, and they'll repair it for 1-2 weeks. They pay for return shipping.
Also, tell them that there was an OTA update, you pressed "ok", and after that the phone would not reboot. DO NOT tell them anything related to you rooting it, flashing, etc.
Ok thanks... so since I dont have a data plan they wont help me fix it? I sent them an email anyways
No, but you can give them a call and see what they say.
I just know from experience that they've turned people down as well as myself in the past.

I think I briked my G1 and I need help
I want to root and updte the ROM of my RC29 G1.
I downloaded these;
Cyanogens Recovery Image 1.4
Radio Image (ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip)
SPL (spl-signep.zip)
JesusFreke 1.5 ADP
JACHero 2.7.3
DrizzyDrake 2.5
I downloaded root.apk to my phone from http://www.androidactivity.com/root/root.apk
I did the step1 in this apk (downloaded DREAIMG.nbh)
Than I fastboot by camera+power button.. It installed the update flawless.. I reboot and opened the root.apk and did the step 2.
so I did everything flawless (partition etc.. )till putting the spl-signed.zip to sd card.. as i did this it and rebooted in recovery mode the phone stucked at T-Mobile G1 screen.
Nothing happens.. I tried to fastboot again, I put the DREAIMG.nbh to sd card and push the cam+power.. the phone is not fastbooting also!
What shoudl I do? Is there any way to resolve this problem?
Thanks
if you cannot get into recovery (home and power) or bootloader (camera and power) then you have a brick, no if's and's or but's. i hope you have a warranty and a good lie. if you can get into either recovery or bootloader then wipe and flash a rom or use fastboot to restore a nandroid. tell your provider that you got an your phone said something about an update and you hit ok and that it would not get past the g1 (or whatever your start up screen is). try and sound as dumb as possible, i.e. no mention of xda, brick, root, anything even remotely technical.
spl-signed.zip sounds a lot like the 1.33.2005 spl or "doom bringer" that is what bricked your phone, if it is bricked. did you flash the radio (2.22.19.26I) first? if not, then that is definitely what bricked your phone. if you already had the radio, then your phone is a just a cruel play of statistics.
Seems so.. I put the radio first.. in tutorial it says;
"Now that you partioned your card, place SPL file on your SD card, go into recovery mode and hit the option to apple any update. Let it complete and reboot. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO get pass the G1 screen at this point. Pull the battery, delete the update on your SD card and NOW place the sd in a card reader and put the hero rom on it."
I exactly did this.. and it's still stucked on G1 screen.. I'm living in Turkey so no hope to bring the phone to a retailer or to service..
Just like david said if you can't get into recovery (home + power) or bootloader (cam + power) then you have a brick. Just make sure you are holding in home + power long enough to get into recovery. Did you check if you phone was able to have the "danger" spl installed?
...
What's "danger SPL"? .. I'm sure I'm holding the camera + power long enough..
Thanks for the reply
The "danger" spl is 1.33.2005, which just like me and david think is what you loaded on your phone. Not all phones are allowed to have that spl and will brick your phone. If you flash the "danger" spl before the radio it will brick your phone. If you interupt the flash while loading the "danger" spl you will get a brick. Once you flash the spl you have to reflash another rom cause it overwrites the existing. The only time you need that spl is if you are going to load a hero rom. But if your not able to get into recovery or bootloader then your phone is a brick. I would immediatly call HTC and have them repair it for you considering the phone is not quite a year old yet and still under warranty, I know the phone came out sometime last October. Just don't say anything about bricks, spl, roms, xda, or anything like that.
thanks for the info.. I did exactly what you say.. The issue is I live in Turkey, the phone is second hand.. no receipt, no warranty docs, nothing.. so I think HTC will not repair it or change it. HTC Android phones are not in the market officially yet in Turkey..
I bought a brand new unused HTC Hero insteaed 15 minutes ago.. It's a shame that I want to install Hero Rom.. at the end I came up with a new HTC Hero The most expensive rom in the history I guess..
Thanks for your help anyway.. I will sell the bricked G1 on an auction site. May be someone will buy for it's parts..

Well thats cool you got a hero. But if I were you I would still atempt to contact HTC to see if they will repair it, then you could sell it and recoup some money for the hero. If thats the case then they have no idea what they are talking about because tmobile is the ones that issue the OTA updates, it's no 3rd party. I would suggest calling back and talking to someone else, maybe it was just the person you were talking to. In my experience I dropped my phone a few months back and it wouldn't turn back on. So I called one store to see if they would replace it in the store and I told them I dropped it and they said since it's physical damage I would have to send it to asus (insurance) to have it fixed. So I called the next store up and told them I got an update and the phone wouldn't turn on after that and they said come in and we'll replace it. So I had a new phone about an hour after it broke. That might help for you, but I would really call back and see if you get a different response. I've never heard anyone say anything like the experience you just got.

If thats the case then they have no idea what they are talking about because tmobile is the ones that issue the OTA updates, it's no 3rd party. yea i found it weird too..i dont have my accout with tmobile so htc is my last hope..imma give em another call later today or tomorrow..they said that htc doesnt support the tmobile update so if a tmo update messes up your phone then u most likely have to pay for the repair

Sounds like they keep givin you the run around. This time when you call just be pissed off and don't take no for an answer. Say you want a supervisor or something, but yea that's f'd up.
for T-Mobile G1 if it's still been under a year since first purchase?
errrr once? I don't fully understand the question but if your phone breaks whilst it's under warranty you can get it replaced. I then imagine the replacement comes with a years warranty too.
That is, unless you voided the warranty, then you're screwed

I think he means that if he breaks it then breaks another one and so one, will he be able to get a new one. I would assume HTC would catch on and stop sending you replacements.
Well, do you pay for insurance?
T-Mobile will only replace your phone for certain things. If you drop and break your phone, physical damage, they will NOT replace it. This is why you pay for insurance through your Network Provider (T-Mobile in this case).
Now if you're having software issues, maybe your camera stopped working, or you bricked your phone, you can get T-Mobile to replace it for free, however you need to explain yourself correctly. If you brick your phone, tell them you received and OTA update, and now your phone won't boot up. Or if it is something legitimate like your Camera stopped working for w/e reason (I've had to replace x1 of my G1's because of this, and I received a new one, free of charge), explain that to them, "One day it stopped working, and hasn't worked sense", blah blah. They're probably try and instruct you over the phone to do a wipe/factory reset, just go along with it, and remember: ALWAYS PLAY DUMB.
Anyways, to answer your question:
-if pay for insurance, then yes, you can break your phone as many times as you want, however you have a co-pay to pay (It was $130, it might be less now).
-If you've broken your phone, and don't have insurance, either replace it yourself, or you're screwed.
-If you've bricked your phone, or have some kind of software issue, you can get it replaced for free, as long as you do it right.
Hope that answers your question.
