I am about to buy an 09 Ford Focus and am unsure about whether the G1 will work with it or not. I have been hearing that it will and will not work depending on which link in google you listen too. Anyone in here have any knowledge about it?
The G1 will work with every feature of sync excluding text messaging. I have looked and looked to find out why, or to find a work around, with no success. The phone book does sync properly, and phone calls can be made.
If you are seriously looking at the car, when you do a test drive, have them let you sync your phone. That is a significant feature they're selling you on, so there is no reason they should say no. I just purchased my 09 focus about a month ago, and that is one of the first things I did when we returned from the drive.
If you have any more Q's, feel free to PM me.
P.S. Love the car, got it w/ the Moon&Tune Package. Get the larger wheel size. 15" is an uncomfortable ride.
So as a follow up, I contacted Sync support. Here is the transcript:
Chat InformationPlease wait for a Sync Agent to respond.
Chat InformationThank you for contacting the Ford & Lincoln-Mercury Sync Support Center.
You are now chatting with 'Adam'
How may I assist you?
you: I have a T-mobile G1
you: and am able to use all features but text messaging
you: and wonder why that is
Adam: Unfortunately, few phones support the ability to forward text messages over Bluetooth, as is required to use that feature.
you: is there an sdk for sync?
Adam: Though T-Mobile allows that ability to be used on their network, it is unlikely that the messaging application on the G1 can be changed to send the messages over Bluetooth +AT commands. Those commands are how SYNC communicates with the phone for all features.
Adam: No, there is not an SDK available.
you: the +AT commands, are they lower level commands within the OS, or could an app be built (as it is open source) to do such.
Adam: The last time I had asked about the issue, I was told that there were no plans to make an SDK available in the future, either.
Adam: The +AT commands are part of the standard Bluetooth protocols.
Adam: It would be possible for an application to be built to send the messages, though I don't know about intercepting the messages from the typical G1 texting application.
Adam: You would also need to be sure that the feature is told to SYNC during the Service Discovery phase of the connection, so SYNC knows that the phone can be capable of that. I am not sure exactly what would need to be changed, but I believe that information is in the GSM specification for text messages.
you: are there any other elements that would need to be involved?
Adam: I am not aware of anything else, though I am not a SYNC engineer.
you: fair enough
Adam: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
you: well then thank you very much for the information, and hopefully we can make something work.
Going to post this to the dev forum and see whats possible.
Thanks for all the knowledge guys. I am having a blue 2009 focus shipped in friday so i will be testing it then. I understood the text messaging did not work as i was told that off the bat via google. I heard that the iPhone and Sync work perfectly together in all aspects so i am going to see if they can send texts over BT b/c its there is a iPhone app for it or if its built in then the G1 can sure do it.

Fist off, let me apologize for yet another IM thread. But I have looked and done research and am stuck. You all are the peeps with the answers, so I am asking this here. Again, sorry for another IM post....
I am looking for a Mobile IM client that works over the GPRS data network, not SMS, that has a way to inform users that I am on my mobile device. From what I have seen, the only IM clients that will do this are the SMS based mobile clients. Which does me no good as I need Gtalk (Jabber) as well as AIM etc...
So my next thought was to use a different buddy icon for the IM client on my phone as opposed to when I use Gaim/Pidgin. Only I cannot seem to find one that support buddy icons on the mobile device.
Am I simply SOL and need to deal with the fact that ppl will not be able to tell I am mobile unless I go with the SMS client?
Lastly, I use 2 AIM accounts, one personal and one for business. It seems as though no Mobile IM client will let you use more than one AIM profile at a time. Does anyone know if this is actually the case. I have tried Mundu and IM+.
Thanks for any help you can give.
SC
My understanding with mundu is that you can use multiple aim accounts with the paid version. While I can't verify this on WM6 yet, I was able to do this on my palm.
BTW, don't you wish Pidgin would port already.
Yeah Pidgin would be really nice
I do have a retail ver of mundu im. I got it from handango last friday on Free-App friday. I don't know it it's exactly the same as the paid version, but it did let me update it today when the newer version came out. Are you using the version for PalmOS or for WM5?
Are you running the PPC or the SP version? I was able to use my Free-App Friday code to unlock the PPC version available for download directly from Mundu.
Unfortuantely I have noticed that this IM app, as "pretty" as it is, uses about 4X as much memory as Octro/Agile and still lacks a today screen plugin.
FWIW, I also got Mundu on free-app friday. I wasn't clear on what version I was getting from them (smartphone or PPC), so I downloaded the PPC version directly from Mundu's site, then applied the registration key Handango had emailed me to that version. So what I have should be identical to the "paid" version, but I can't find a way to sign on to the same service twice with two different IDs.
The bigger problem I'm having is, I have a friend who just got a Treo Centro, which comes with some kind of AIM messenger built in. When he messages me, I can't see his message. I get the the line that shows his id and the timestamp, but the actual text of his message is blank. He gets my messages, I get messages from his phone if I'm logged in from a PC, I get messages in Mundu if he sends them from a PC, and I and another friend of his with (an unkown phone) also gets his messages if he sends from his phone to his friends phone. But Mundo seems to omit the message if the message came from another phone.
That was my experience as well. Oh well... looks like we sit and wait for a port of Pidgin.

Got to thinking... I dont own an iPhone and have never held one. From what I understand, the iPhone has a Visual Voice Mail feature that essentially stores voice mail on the phone.
Now, is this as simple as ATT sending the WAV file to the phone as an attachment and the phone storing it? Plus the iPhone having a built in app that "threads" the list of voice mails?
I was looking at this application:
http://www.motionapps.com/mvisualvoicemail/_otherppc.jsp
But, my provider, ATT, doesn't send me the WAV files so the above program will not work for me. I use Vonage and they DO send the voice mail attachment but I use TCMP to open and listed.
Just wondering how the iPhone did what it did and why the reset of us are missing out on this same feature.
Congratulations. On another thread you flame a noob for asking a question thats been asked before... and then you start a new thread about this
Sorry, I guess you misunderstood. I'm looking for carrier specific option. I mean, ATT already does it for ONE brand of phone, right? Why not all phones. Callwave, GrandCentral, etc are all 3rd party stuff. They might work, yes. But again, if ATT does it for one, why not all?
My point was that you could have discussed it on the existing thread about the issue... considering your post the microsd card threads...
In my past experience (using Treo / Palm) running 2-3-4 "inbound call programs" causes you to loose calls. For example, when an inbound call comes in, you start up Ringo, MagiCall and something else, by the time all 3 applications do their thing, the phone locks up or whatever and you miss 90% of your calls.
The thread you point to requires more modifications than I want to attempt to use. Replying on sooo many variables (3rd party apps, 3rd party answering machines, etc) I think you are bound to miss calls eventually.
In the end, I'd perfer not to miss calls or voice mails. I'd just like for my carrier, ATT, who already does it, to send me the voice mail as an attachment and then store it on my phone.
I think the program I point to in my post, MVisualVoiceMail is just for that, reading attached email voice mails, which I want from my carrier, ATT, the same provider that already does it for one brand of phone, the iPhone.
It's still the same question. Only the iPhone has visual voicemail. AT&T will not support it on other phones.
Full marks though for ignoring my point...
I used the search function but didn't get any definitive answers..
What are some good AIM clients that to some certainty don't end up counting as Text/IM by AT&T? Or, which clients use Text/IM so I can avoid them?
Also, which of the data-based clients allow you to click on links sent in messages? Neither the included AIM client on my Fuze nor the official AIM for Windows Mobile allow me to click or highlight text in the messages. Major flaw IMO.
I never text message, yet right now I see a 170 message usage under my phone number which I realize to be my AIM usage. At 20 cents each, I'm sure as hell going to stop that.
Any suggestions would be great, I just need a starting point.
EDIT:
Any other AT&T charges I should know about? :\
.. Alright so all the replies are gone, that's fine. The only unanswered question for me is..
Does anyone know if AOL's own AIM client, the one here:
http://mobile.aol.com/aolproducts/aim-for-windows-mobile
uses text/SMS or data? I'd really like to know for sure.
I use Palringo. Im not sure if its a txt deal, ive never cared i have unlimited, but the program is awesome. Just be aware that if you leave it on you battery with drop about 10% an hour.
Hi all,
I made a small android program that displays the Voice Mail Indicator when you receive a Voice Mail (it waits for the +18 sms). This is a simple proof-of-concept app. When I have time, I'll improve it by adding proper notification (Sound, Led, Vibrating...).
I am providing it as is, it works well on my phone. Feel free to post questions, comments, suggestions...
Might not hurt for you to explain what a "VM" is.
I'm assuming Voicemail.
He said it's a proof-of-concept app, like a more complex 'Hello World!' app. So probably not very useful, but just a skill test.
Interesting, so an icon or led when somebody leaves a message...
Seems to me that with phones the way they are now, that messages should be recorded on the phone itself rather than by the provider. I certainly wouldn't want private information stored on somebody's unknown server where they can mess with at their leisure.
To the OP:
How about counting (x configurable) rings, playing an outgoing message, and capturing incoming message for, (configurable) seconds? Then everybody can tell their provider's to f-off and save the $6/month that they're dumping into the answering service.
I apologize for the confusion, I should have been clearer. Fido users will understand what this app is for, but I can understand why others don't.
The situation is simple. With Fido, whenever someone leaves us a new VM (VoiceMail), we get an SMS from fido, with the source address being +18. I personally find this annoying and would much rather have the "normal" behaviour of having a status icon alerting me that I have a new voicemail. That way, I can quickly know if I received a new VM or a new SMS. With Fido, you actually have to check the SMS to see if it's a normal SMS or if it is the +18 notification that Fido sends.
So that's what my app does. It monitors incoming SMS and when it detects an SMS form +18, it gives the user a notification that a new VM has arrived, with the proper icon.
I hope that explains it better!
FYI: The acronym "VM" typically is used for "Virtual Machine".

I've always seen voicemail referred to as VM, just like callerid is referred to as CID. Anyways, that's just a detail and I made the modification in the first post.
Is it possible to have working this app. on HTC One S?
I installed it, but can't find nowhere!

I don't know why you'd need it, every Android system since 1.0 can display Voicemail notifications. I believe some carriers, in the early days, didn't do this properly, which is why this app was created. Still, it shouldn't be needed today, your HTC One S should have this capability built-in and your carrier should be able to use it just fine.

I have replied to your email. Expecting something really good from this app
I have just sent you an email. Hope to receive the beta invite soon
Two things, One you need to implement pinning of contacts and second It is not able to load conversation history, sends out errors.
Looking forward to try it out!
@wpxbox
Contact pinning added to our new features to be implemented for the final version.
About the second one I'm going to contact you to request more details.
@arkavat
Email us with the live id you used as primary in your windows phone.
The application is darn slow on my HTC Mozart (I had to kill it)
In most of the case it doesn't show the online contacts (it keeps saying that None of your contacts are online when there are more than 30 people online on PC version).
Sorry, I couldn't test it fully since my device got hanged dozens of time. I understand that this is a beta test, but you have to improve your application a lot.
Let me know if you need more information or video demonstration
It's pretty fast and responsive on my Titan.
- The application icon/tile is just plain sloppy looking. I don't know if that's final, but the blurry letters just don't look good.
- The spacing for each setting on the settings page is not properly aligned left-wise.
- The spacing for the text in the about page is also not properly aligned.
- It's not clearly obvious that I can tap on 'view all' or 'view only connected' text in the contacts pivot. Maybe simply underlining the text, or having it displayed in the user's accent color might make it more obvious that it can be tapped.
- I feel like updating my 'status' text should be easier. Maybe having it built into the 'status' page rather than the configuration page.
I'm sure there is more, but it's a great start to a very simple and fast Talk app. Great work!
Sent an email today. Hope to hear from you with an invite!
Drop My Comment on Load Conversation History. I was trying a similar app.
Till now I find it working perfectly fine though you need to work more on GUI. I will stay in touch with you over email.
There really needs to be a way to set "offline".
Away isn't enough, and "unlinking" requires that I retype my password when I want to log in again.
Sorry for that.
Added in the MUST BE DONE list.
I live in Canada. We can not get google voice phone numbers. As far as I can tell, we can only use it to place VoIP calles from the web interface to land lines (accessed through the gmail screen). Is there anyway to use this app to make calls in this way without having callback numbers etc.
Saw that the RC is coming out soon. Any idea yet when the emails will be sent out the the beta testers?
I'm Daniel, another developer of jiTalk.
We publish the application 2 days ago, but it has become accesible yesterday. Today we will send the email to our beta testers.
Greetings.
Looking for exact changes done in this version.
