Backup & Restore.. Contacts, SMS, PhoneCall List - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

hi , i need help ,
what can be used ? ...
for backup & restore .. the Full Contacts List ( each contact have phone+address info & notes ) , SMS (all sms inside inbox & sent-items) , Phone Call List (received/dialed/missed calls) ? along WITH date & time preserved & restored correctly .
my phone info : HTC Kaiser/Tilt : PocketPC, rom 1.62.502.0 01/17/08, radio 1.27.14.09, Qualcomm MSM7200 400Mhz, Ram 128MB, Flash 256MB, 32bit, Storage 124.91MB, External Stoarge Card SD 8 GB, 240x320px, 65K color, Win Mobile 6 Prof, CE OS 5.2.1622 (Build 18128.0.4.4) .
IF i can Backup those Perfectly, only Then, i want to try out some of the ROM stuff that i see here shared my many.
Others may also try out different roms & apps, if those things (contacts, sms, PhonceCall) can be bkup & restored accurately.
i would prefer 1st free software solution, but if thats not able to do those required functions properly , only then go for a trial/paid version .
many many thanks.

after searching on ... SMS Backup ... found out ...
according to user, 'lie_ui', quoting from here ... " You can use the backup utility in your XDA to perform full back up of your device into an SD card. Once you hard reset your device, then you load back your backup from your SD card. If you use Outlook to sync email, calendar, contact, etc, there is also a third party software that would extend your Outlook to include SMS tab. That might be the best way to keep a backup copy of your SMS always. Forgot the name of the app, but if you search the topic in the forum, you will find it, many ppl asked about this before. Cheers, lie_ui " ... 14th March 2006, 03:00 PM.
quoting lie_ui again ... " Here is the application I mentioned above. The trial version is 15 days.. may be you can use it to backup and load it back before it expires.. http://www.jeyo.com/extender.asp " ... 14th March 2006, 03:10 PM.
great .. found another solution here ...
PimBackup . thanks to user dotfred . it can backup & restore all of those ... excellent . and its FREE as well .

by using the PimBackup , i was able backup my stuff , and after upgrading the ROM from WM6 to WM6.1 , i was able to restore all as well ... excellent program . sms, contacts, phonecall log, appointments, speed-dials, etc .
but it did not backup email accounts or their settings . so did not restore either . but i didnt lost anything , as i was using emails in imap mode , so messages in 'inbox' & 'sent items' were fine on online email server . ~ Bry8Star .

PimBackup didnt backup the Favorites .. so backup those using some other way .
i got better result when i restored different options individually one by one .
ActiveSync :
if you are going to use ActiveSync after restoring by using the PimBackup ... ActiveSync will take you through new sync pairing process ... do that ... and quickly Stop the sync process , immediately when syncing starts ... since previously i've used the option of Replacing Mobile Device stuff on conflicting record/data , so i had to change that to Replace Desktop stuff on conflicting data/record .. or else i would have got everything Doubled up , after the sync .
* best is to ... keep PimBackup in the 'Storage Card' ... run PimBackup's backup process .. save the backup file(s) in your Storage Card .. and then set the ActiveSync option to "Replace Item on Desktop" ( ActiveSync -> Tools -> Options -> Options tab -> Settings button -> 'If there is a conflict:' ) . And then you can do ROM update or whatever else . And then restore 1st, using the PimBackup from the 'Storage card' , and then you may use ActiveSync . After the 1st time sync is done , then you can change that option back to "Replace Item on Device" .. if thats the way you want to keep/use it .

Restoring Backup to NTAF v6.0
I just installed NTAF's v6.0 ROM on my HTC Fuze and I'm having trouble restoring my info. I did a complete backup with Sprite to my SD card prior to flashing the ROM. After I flashed the ROM, I ran the Sprite .exe file and selected to restore everything but the systems files because I thought they might interfere with the new ROM. The only thing that I can find that has been restored are my notes. My favorites, contacts, texts, and e-mail are all still missing. How do I restore these things?

Backup SMS messages

Hi All,
I am considering upgrade from 1.6.7.1 to 2.16.9.101. The only think that still hold me is backup of my sms messages.
My question is - Is there are way to back up sms messages without any backup SW (e.g. spbBack etc.)?
I know from Outlook that it holds all its mails in single file, which I can just copy to DVD and after fresh install import. I suspect that it should be the case with Pocket Outlook as well. And as long as SMS are part of Pockect Outlook, they should be kept in the same file. Where is that file and can I replace it after new ROM installation?
Thanks in advance
helo there, brother.. am here with a solution for ur problem and yet, another question aswel..
u can use jeyo mobile companion 1.1 to backup all ur sms's.. i use this to backup my sms if i hardreset my fone or reflash my rom.. really useful software.. hope this helps..
now heres my question, jeyo mobile companion doesnt allow me to back up sms's in folders, ie, i have a specific folder in my inbox for the sms my girlfriend sends me.. but wen i do the backup with jeyo mobile companion, it does not backup the msgs in the folder.. i'l hav to move the msgs to the inbox folder b4 i backup and after i restore them, i hav to move them bak to folders.. so i wud like to kno an application that would backup sms and folders as well.. thanx in advance
Well,
Your proposal is solution, however not exactly into the direction I am looking for... jeyo usage means that I have to use third party SW to backup my SMS messages and restore them afterwards.
So let me repeat what I want to do:
1. Take from my PPC file where all my SMS are stored (using file explorer and Active Sync);
2. Save this file to my laptop;
3. Flash ROM;
4. Replace new, empty file created by fresh Pocket Outlook on PPC with mine.
If somebody can tell me how to perform that sequence it will be really appreciated,
Thanks in advance
I guess they are in the root of the mobile device.. one of those .vol files maybe? You could try these files. (After you've secured your sms-messages with a third-party program of course - as a temporary solution)
Yes, I thought the same. Unfortunately I am not able to copy any of those files (cemail for instance). I have got the message "Cannot copy "cemail". There has been sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use."
I suspect that this file is already locked by some system applications running. Any ideas are welcomed,
Regards

With spb backup you can backup only your contacts, E-mail and SMS messages if you want to, works great. I have mine backing these up every night in case of crash.
I found if you use the file explorer in the mda to copy everything to a mini sd card you overcome the "sharing violation" error.

for the guys that flash frequently, how2setup ur stuf fastr?

I want to try summiters new 2.3 rom, however, i have been flashin my cingular 8125 about 3 times a week, and im sick of setting it up from scratch each time. is there something out there or can you tell me what files i need to back-up to maintain settings for:
-what speed dials are assigned
-voice dials i have saved
-my tcpmp settings
-my browser cookies so i dont have to relog in to all my porn sites
-my settings for what alert tones to use and when to use them
is it possible to back any of that crap up and restore it after a new flash? thanks pimps!
Bah, no responses. I was hoping that there was a "backup my settings" app
WELL if you are using the same rom version each time which idont think you are. then spb backup is the way to go
i mean it costs a little and you can backup your sys data as well as your settings txt msgs and **** like that. Now if you upgrade to a different rom version everytime then its not likely that you will want to back up system data as it could screw up your wm5 and then you have to reflash again.
theres also sprite too but never tried it
tried spb and it doesnt work that great. it almost works perfectly but it doesnt hmm i might retry it tho cuz i think you can specify what **** to backup
http://www.spritesoftware.com/
I've got SPB too, but I've never reflashed. Under the Custom Backup you can choose 4 things-PIM, Tasks, Email & System Data. Does anybody know if it can use everything but the "System Data" setting to restore the PIM, tasks & email after a ROM upgrade? Would it save the registry changes too? Thanks.

yes u can restore the 3 things but not the registry because it is saved on the "System Data" portion of the backup.
and gizm0luvsu is correct if you restore from a full backup it will revert the rom [os] to the one u made de backup regardless of the rom you have currently.
You can backup your voice tag database between hard resets by copying the file CommandModel1.bin found under the windows folder to your pc or to the memory card. After rom upgrade copy it back to your windows folder and all your voice tags are back!
Create backup of windows\start menu - most programs that are on the storage card dont need a reinstall.
Create copy of pim.vol in the root directory of the device - contains contact and appt information. After flash change the new pim.vol to pim.vo and copy and paste old pim.vol (use total commander or gsfinder file explorers for this) and soft reset and you will have info back.
Create backup of windows\favorites - for all your internet favorites.
That will make restore a bit quicker than otherwise.
thanks meschle, thats what i was looking for!
Is it possible to create a *.reg file like you would in windows that can just be executed on your device importing all you registry changes. I'm not talking about a full backup...only a file that says change this value, change that value, add this dword, etc.
Possible?
Yes you can use the export function of phm reg editor (or others) of the keys you wanted to save and restore them later.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I've searched the forums and google for an answer, and haven't found one:
I've gone to the PHM website: http://www.phm.lu/products/PocketPC/RegEdit/
Went to download, but I don't see a version for the OMAP processor and/or Windows Mobile 5 (WM5).
I tried using their MSI windows installer version, but when it launched ActiveSync's Add / Remove programs, PHM wasn't listed as an available application to install.
Which version do I download for use on the 8125?
Thanks, Mike

Thanks Dark, works like a champ, or rather like a registry editor champ

Big Problem with Contacts ( please help )

hello, i am using Kaiser now , i had over than 300 contacts on it , yesterday formated my desktop pc and reconect the kaiser to the active sync software , it asked for relationship , so i made it normaly , when done , all my contacts gone away !!!! cz the outlook on the pc was new after formating !!!!!!! , how i can get them back !! i tried to search on ( Parament save ) icon in the setting like i was doing with w2003se in pda2k before but its not availabe on this windows 6 !!
p.s i was using pda2k for long time and i have a backup made by active sync with pda2k and active sync that time ( before 10 days ) then the pda broke completely , ,, its .stg file , 30 mb ,,,
can we do something guys ? i really need that contacts
waiting for help
regards
come on guys , i need your help up
This is a commond problem. Try this solution. After you synch (during which time I presume you have no contacts on your Kaiser), go to tools-->options and uncheck contacts. Sync again. Then reenable contacts. Good chance the contacts will now transfer. Do not remove the USB cable during the process.Hope this works for you.

Got ya now, Yeah this is a common problem, I did the same thing and i was able to get my contacts back.
thank you a lot dear bro.

thanx Again Neurodoc , i will try to check and uncheck it again and let you know anyway

dear ManTheDan it seems we were writing in the same time ,
i am trying my best , i told you what happend exactly
, i formated my pc , outlook got empty contacts , then when the first sync i didn't check anything in the wizard connection , i thought that i wanat it only for charging , and i noticed that my outlook is empty cz pc formated , so i didn't check anything ...... when got CONNECTED on active sync ,, all contacts has been gone ,,,, empty on kaiser as well as outlook !
any other ideas guys ? plz
thank you too much
Since it sounds like your contacts are no longer in Outlook on your PC because it was re-formatted, I think the ony way to get them back is via a back-up you had done before this problem existed. Reading your post, it sounds like you had done a back-up, but that it is "broken". I am not sure what that means, but I would try it.
Well if you do have the .stg file try setting up outlook again and restoring using that file via active sync restore option under tools i think. Not sure if you reformated your computers after you had saved your contacts, sorry if i dont understand, just trying my best
Check your deleted folder in outlook, thats where it puts everything after you synced, if you empty it entirely(a lot or daily) then your doomed if not copy paste them back in to the contacts and sync, happened to me but a different way of it happened.
(had contacts then synced, then deleted them off the sim and somehow out of my stupidity I deleted both. . .and then I was looking and looking and then someone told me that and I did what I said and then they synced back and I put them back on both and just used kaiser tweak to hide sim contacts.)
outlook has no contacts , cz the pc completely has been formated , and i installed new outlook ,, so its empty !!!! and got the kaiser also empty even i didn't check the contacts when sync it for the first time !!
stg file is good , but i got from the pda2k before break the device , i mean i broke the device completly ( destroied pda2k ) so noway to get it back again as working device , ,,
i thought about to restore it into win2003 emulator sfotware , then transfer the contacts into outlook , then from outlook i can get them on kaiser ,, but also the mobile devie emulater software didn't read the stg file cz it got from other machine as said ...
now trying to get a pda2k from a friend and restore the stg file into it , to fill out the outlook , then get in back into kaiser , thats the only logic idea i think ,right guys ?
thank you alot ,, any other idea's or similler problem plz post , i would be thankfull
regards
you can extract the contacts from the stg file, i've done it before with my blue angel. search the forums, it has to be around somewhere. and you might wanna use google to search, cause any info will probably be way to old for a plain search
found this thread http://www.pocketpcmag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=18858 on extracting databased out of .stg files. dunno if it'll help, but hope it does. good luck
thank you too much dear , you are very helpfull
i already tried to open and extract the stg files , but couldn't !!
i tried some softs , wihtout results , only last one when somynex directed me to stg viewer I couldn't find it , i will try to find it , plz if you have other way to extract the stg file and get the contacts db from it let me know ,
by the way , the stg fle was taken from i-mate pda2k , its like ablue angel same same ,, so i just want to view the contacts to register them , even manually ,, thank you
regards
So you deleted contacts before you synced on outlook after you formatted? Or you deleted them after you synced on accident? Because you would check the deleted folder and then copy paste them back. I know you re-installed windows.

Hello there,
Check the "DELETED" folder of the outlook, sometimes the contacts can end up there.... doesnt harm to check..even if its a brand new outlook.
But the possibility of that to is very less, as the contacts have been deleted from ur mobile, not from ur outlook...
I mentioned that but he didn't listen. . .
Yeah...
What happened is you setup a new sync partnership and it deleted your contact since "desktop overwrites mobile" is the default in ActiveSync. This is common and unfortunately irreversable. For future reference, when you wipe out your pc make sure you go into Outlook and do a file> import & export > export to a file > .PST > and save that all important .PST file somewhere safe. That file will contain your mail, calendar, contacts, notes, to-do's.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't think your getting that info back unless you backed up your entire C: drive.
Well, they should be in the deleted folder in outlook then. If the OP doesnt want to look and see them in deleted then its his problem.
ok guys , i told you that i formated the desktop pc , and i got outlook empty , blank without any data ,,,, so i had them only on the mobile device , outlook gone , went away , installed new windows , new office , new pc ,,,,,,,
when first try on active sync , first try made a relationship between the desktop and mobile device ,,,, I DIDN'T CHECK ANY CONTACTS OR CALENDER OR APOINTMENTS WHEN RELATIONSHIP WIZARD WAS CREATING ,,,, after done " connected " all contacts has been gone , i think like the bro said up that the new outlook overwrite the device contacts with new list " wich is empty cz the outlook is blank " so got the device as blank contacts also .. thats the most currect answer ,,,
NOW GUYS I FOUD A SOLUATION , BUT NOT FOR ALL
cz i had stg file from my old pda2k device " imate " win2003SE , i did this :
1. found a friend who has the same device " imate - pda2k "
2. asked him to hard reset it without any personal data , and give it to me
3. i restored the full back up to the device and i got my contacts back as my old pda2k device
4. copied the contacts to my sim card , then put it in kaisaer and install them on the mobile normally ( could be also with any backup program or oulook if well configured )
5. done ...
sorry , mybe this solution would not affect other's problem in the same state ..
NOW PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO : coz i have them normaly on the kaiser now , i am afraid to connect it to the desktop pc coz of the same problem ,,
FIRST : i want to make normal sync relationship with kaiser and pc , but first set must tell him to check the contacts or not ,,, i afraid to overwrite it or loose them again ( even the last time i am sure i didn't check the contacts to be syncED !!! )
i want to normal way to be without loosing the exesting contacts ,,
SECOND : how to make a full back up for this kaiser with active sync or other way , ( active sync when connect to kaiser doesn't show full/backup/resotre and i don't know why !!! ) , in case to restore it later if needed , give me good way plz
thank you so much guys , i don't wish this problem happen to anyone , you take care
waiting for ideas for the First and Second matters i talked about ...

How can I backup my contact ?

I change the windows of my PC and the new connection of my HTC delete all m contacts.
How can I find my old contacts ??
Please HELP ME !!!
Hi,all the time you must backup your files in your pda,spb backup for programs and Pimbackup for contacts ...
Thanks but PIM backup work when you use it to save your pim informations.
I don't use before and the PIM Backup doesn't find the last pim informations ...
Another solution ?
would recommend you strongly to open an account in my.funambol.com and install their WM application, extremely easy & useful for backup...
I will this solution. I have try other but without succes ....
OP, I'm not quite sure about your complaints about the functioning of PIM Backup, but it works extremely well for me. Just make sure you back up to your storage card and not your device memory, as a hard reset will wipe all added on information from your device memory.
I have an Exchange account with 1and1. It syncs all of my contacts/calendar/tasks/mail.
Whenever I port to a new ROM, I just double check that my photos/video/docs are on my MicroSD card, and flash away! Then on the new ROM, I just point to my exchange account again, and I'll be right back where I was in minutes.
Definitely work the small $
I think I forgot my contact forever ...
I don't use before a Pim backup and WM6 and Activesync don't propose a backup ... I use PDA during the last 6 year and it was the first time thaqt I lose my contacts ...
Next time I install a Pim backup program ...

SPB-Backup fried my Diamond

I used to love SPB backup for keeping my data safe when I screwd up my phone too much, but for some reason I have less good experiences with the SBP / Diamond combination.
First all, my faforite contacts dissapeared from the TF3D tab when restoring a backup (happened to me several times), then my music player went crazy after another restore and finally it crawled up and died in a quiet corner after another restore... I had to hard reset to get it alive again... and re-install everything...
This never happened to me while doing the same thing on a HTC Touch...
Am I missing something or is SPB Backup not working properly on the diamond???
Is sprite backup any better???
Ps: I use stock NLD ROM 1.93
i don't like Sprite or SPB Backup for the Diamond, neither seem to work properly! At the moment i'm using Jeyo Mobile companion for the Contacts, Messages (SMS,MMS,Email) etc and it seems to be ok as it also saves the message threading too which is a bonus!
That is weird, i use spb backup also and have no bissues with that. just can advise you to go through all the settings as there are several that need to be set correctly. Also during restore you need to correct the options for restore.
If you set it up correct all will be restored.
Grtzzz Machineman
What is your SPB backup version ?
I found SPB backup caused only problems with my M700. For the Diamond I just copy all data off, and fortunately use Outlook on Exchange to resyn contacts, email etc etc.
I then have to reinstall all apps :-(
I have it down to a 10 minute, fine art.
Have used Spb Backup for while with my Diamond and no problems.....perhaps a re-install of the program is in order

SPB backup 2.0 I think, I just downloaded the latest version and used that, su I am up to date...
I think the SPB cannot handle the internal memory or the TF3D settings or something...
I think I will make just backups of email and contacts etc and also learn how to install everything in 10 minutes like Sickboy555
[Idea] Would it be possible to create one big exe or cab file from several loose cab file's and maybe also integrate some reg tweaks, so I can install them all in one go?

I m using the latest version as well (2.0 something) and I have no problem at all,
I made restore from backup few times and all were ok..
The problems I saw that while using my local interface language instead English it made some problems, so I m using English iterface anyway and Just have to change from local language to English after HR..(u can use
other language , but b4 backup change to english)
2 more thing that u should take care:
1. save all the backup u make (once in 1-2 weeks or something) in your PC.
and if problem with one restore u can use the previous one..
sometines u have problem due program that u installed and u make a backup
with the problem (otherwise why to make HR and restote ?), and the prblem still exist after restore...
2. Do SR b4 backup , u get "clean" RAM for backup...
If you are discussing technical problems with a backup program, and you arent sure of the prog version, you are just wasting your own and everyone elses time. Find out.
hello,
before starting a backup reset your device.
and before you playing the backup back, reset it too.
than you will never became problems with your spb-tool.
sometimes you have really wait for ending of backup(ping) or restoring.
dont wait and reset your device and try again.
no prroblem that you dont know your version,
because a backup-program is for backup(ping)/restoring,
an essentuelly needed tool for all devices of the world.
dont sell if dont well !!!!
check the german o2-site (http://www.o2online.de/nw/support/downloads/software/xda/xdadiamond/index.html) for money-less backup-tool.

I have been using SPB Backup (and Weather and Shell) with no problems on my Diamond.
spb backup 2.0.1 build 3092
sometimes i had "messing" contacts (doubled from sim) but all the rest worked fine. I'm on 3rd rom installation and after flashing/Hresetting i just restore my last backup of the old rom using the option "rom upgrade" thicked.
all ok: custom weather, powermanagement, background 4all pages, font fix and so on... (to be sure i keep this "system" cabs in an internal storage folder named "mayday").
I run a scheduled nightly backup everyday

I think sprint support messed with my diamond
I use spb backup 2.0.1 build 3092 as well and backups run fine. The only thing I don't like is that after backup runs it always wants a reboot even if you tell it not too, and the option to automatically enter pin on reboot doesn't really seem to work, it hangs on windows 6.1 green screen while booting and finishes when you enter the pin code. I haven't really played with restore though. I did find after talking with sprint advanced technical support the other day, my phone suddenly lost the tf3d quick contacts and then also required full contact sync with outlook. It seemed that something tech support did remotely wiped out all my contacts! Has anyone else ever experienced this? I thought this happened on my original touch as well once or twice. Does sprint have this capability? Has it ever happened to anyone else? Am I just paranoid?
