Sorry, maybe a stupid question.
Is it not possible to flash one of the HTC ROM's onto X1?
Nope, it will not work.
I figured that much, but can someone on here maybe explain? From what I could see it has the same processor as X1 etc.

I know people are trying to get android onto X1 and hence my question. Why is it not possible to just use the android rom (with some mods) from the HTC phones as most of the hardware seems similar?

it's basicly misc Hardware stuff.
CPU might be the same same jeah, but evyerthing else is not. neither the chipsets for the keyboard are, nor is the chipset for making phonecalls, nor the memory and so on.
it's liek trying to fit a Mazda Elektronics into a ford ka. maybe u can squeeze it in but im sure it wont work since the electronic doesnt know any part of the new car.

electronic doesn't need to know the car. because in computer systems, there exist another layer between the electronic and the car.
it's called the kernel. hardware abstraction layer.
it'll work... just need someone free enough to make it work.
no further explanations please! lets pretend it is magic
/me swings the magic wand
ps: jeah i know .. im king of typos and abstract examples ^^
Is there anybody working on this right now?
Would love a Hero/etc android ROM on my X1, definitely. Just got a Hero and I'm loving it to bits.

Ahh righto

Thats the shame 'bout HTC (besides da poor quality of hard- and software): they setup ONE hardware and make 5 PDAs with slighty changed details. they were never interested in making good hardware.. everytime they took something away the previous model had... now, they do have android and are able to clone nearly the same device just with another OS.
in commercial aspects, this makes sense.... but as consumer I can only think of it as a pain in the neck. my old universal has a high res display, a 3,5mm audioconnector, a well made keyboard and a fast cpu... years ago... a shame it is the size of a brick .
If someone would mad it possible to use the Compass HW with WinMo i would gladly set a bounty of 50$.
Goal would be a little App to proof that it ist working plus the sourcecode for other Devs.
Does anyone join in?
its probably another 'tv out' scenario...
basically the chipset has the tech but other required hardware / software is not present hence the features can never be used.
why on earth HTC cripple devices like this is boggling.....if the HD had been released with TV-out (which the qualcomm chipset supports) & a hw compass (to be confimed) it would have levelled the competition.....
i am sure their marketing strategy has good reasons for not doing...but as said earlier from the consumers point of view its a pain in the butt...especially considering some of us are locked in 24 month contracts.!! so wont be purchasing other handsets even if we wanted too.
lets hope some clever devs find a way to unlock these features!! (if possible)

I disagree your argumentation:
Developers here wrote drivers to implement TMC and RDS into the features of the Blackstone. HTC hasnĀ“t done it yet.
HTC seems to leave possible feature unused. Maybe to save time for their developers.
The old topic of a missing video driver is another example for that.

50$ from me for unlocking the feature + another 100$ if anyone makes it work with Google Maps + another 100$ if someone makes an augmented reality app like Wikitude (Android).
Only if it's done before the release of the HTC Leo

I've read the same thread from Tuxhero and I have to see it before I believe it. The only thing we've got is a blanket statement that he has read it somewhere. Someone else created slight confusion on this site before with similar statements.
Not saying that he's lying (in fact, I hope he's right), a source would help. Until then, I'm not getting my hopes up.
Im guessin they didnt include alot of features cause when the phone was released whoever ws going to buy it would buy it anyway, and when competitors (Iphone3gs) release phones with features like the compass thing etc , htc can easily release newer phones with the same features ... sort of like having it ready on earlier models so when they need to release it they can quickly!
My guess

While I have no idea why one would want this, you could root your device, install titanium (donate for full of course). Then, in titanium, you should be able to freeze the camera app.
The other way, that I just tried, is install tasker (which is pretty much one of the best apps ever made for anything ever), and set a task up that runs when the camera app is launched that kills the camera task. That way, if the camera app is touched, it immediately kills the process.
Could be for work reasons.
For Work Reasons
Its for work reasons. I will not dismantle this phone to remove the camera..
I'd rather just have it disabled.

I'd think they'd almost make you disable it hardware wise, if you just did a software disable you could easily enable it again when you get through security. Or are they a little "slow"? I know the security guard at my companies front door could get his ass kicked by my grandma lol.

Merely disabling the camera through software or a mod means you could easily re-enable it and this would still present a security risk. Hopefully your employer doesn't think like I do.
Well I was looking for more like an IT POLICY deal
I agree.
I wouldn't run the risk of having a tech savvy security guard checking out my phone and being able to re-enable the phones camera. I was thinking of an application more along the lines of an IT POLICY. With our Blackberry devices the IT POLICY disabled the camera's functionality.
From the sounds of it, I may need to just have the camera module professionally removed or take a shot at it myself. Anyone have a link to the procedures for dismantling the Captivate?

If you MUST have this phone for work, then I understand. But if you don't, I wouldn't destroy the phone. Pick up a piece-of-crap unlocked t-mobile or AT&T phone from 5 years ago that you can mess with. Just bring that into work.
Don't destroy this phone. Everytime a captivate falls, a kitten is eaten.

Currently no, I sent an email to wifirouter which made the great app for our HD2's and the only reply they gave me was no so good, and that for how they see the OS now, it doesnt allow for it.
Lets hope Windows fixes that. Cause we need that. I really really need that.
This one has been beaten to death in other threads but for what it's worth +1 for tethering feature here as well.

not that I have seen, my HD7 is a paper weight right now, since that is all it is good for, i got fed up with all the missing things went back to HD2.
Man, I'm right there with you. Same thing. Microsoft took a step backwards. Disappointment. I have to keep switching SIM cards to my AT&T tilt to tether. Serious BS.
all these answers have really really pushed me back, not buying until MS fixes all or most of the common things, tether, bluetooth atleast
I just got HD7 from ebay and got in love with it and the WP7 system in one hour time. But last and most important thing for me that I checked was usb tethering.
What a disappointment.
I hope M$ will make it soon available or I'll get rid of the phone unfortunately

But yes, tethering not present is a big let down, along with many missing items, and the mid January BIG update, is nothing more then new fixes for market place and cut/paste to shut us up, which is still not here soooooo....
thats why im glad i kept my HD2
has anyone tried using the DFrouter xap posted in the hd2 development forum? You need a jailbroken device for that though..

First, is there any updates concerning tethering on the HD7? And second, why is everyone blaming Microsoft when they have already said that its availible but up to the carriers to offer it?
I was looking at the Chevy Volt the other day and it got me thinking - has anyone here got any experience working with automotive firmware?
The problem with the Volt is that it has no true EV mode - no matter what, you will use fuel sooner or later. There's no button you can push to make it stick with EV at all costs. Personally I wouldn't buy one unless I at least had that option. Obviously you have to worry about how to connect to it in the first place, and then there's how well locked down they've made it etc. It would seem possible given that it's been common practice to swap out the chips on cars to gain more performance for some time now.
So the question is, has anyone tried this sort of thing? How different would it be to hacking phones?

There are three questions you need to ask.
A. What OS is it running (if it's not an existing one there's a whole nother level of difficulty in place)?
B. What kind of security does Chevy have in place to prevent modifying the software (I would imagine it's probably locked down pretty tight)?
C. Is there anything to be gained by modifying the software?

I don't see why they would even bother locking it down. Most people that own the vehicle probably won't even realize that it's an operating system.
Edit: And I'm guessing it's some form of Android.

Good point, I just would imagine they would use some sort of security to remove an incentive to steal the device (but I'm assuming it could be removed from the dash somehow).
