By definition look here. If you are located in Europe and , then GSM is the exclusive technology of choice.
cdma
put that on your diamond and you will brick it....you have been warned
Yep, liam is right. the CDMA forum will support all CDMA devices from predominantly North American carriers like Verizon, Sprint, Telus, Alltel, Bell, US Cellular, etc.

To proof it, turn your phone off, take the battery cover off, take the battery out and set on counter.
Next, figure out your location, if your in Europe, then no need to do anything else, your GSM. If your in the USA, check and see if your carrier qualifies as one of the following (sprint, alltel, verizon, us cellular, telus, bell) If you are one of these, then your are CDMA.
Now this is the tricky part, if you want to switch from GSM to CDMA, do the following:

Well they hit the switch on December 1st of this year, been getting a strong LTE signal since then. Been keeping an eye on the data going in and out of this phone. I have noticed that during phone calls the network switches back to “4G“ and when calls end the “LTE“ reappears. Does anyone here maintain an LTE signal during phone calls by any chance?. Or is this just preliminary tower behavior for testing?

That's how LTE works on AT&T. When on a phone call it switches back to HSPA+. I think it will always be like this but I'm not 100% positive. Never been an issue for me. It switches back and forth very quickly and I hardly ever use data while I'm on the phone.
Well it seems LTE coverage is expanding in the NYC area as of today. I'm now getting LTE signal in the boroughs. Bronx and Queens to be exact.

I'm kinda ranting about it right now but I really think Sprint should shift over to being a GSM Network mainly because CDMA is so old and outdated....even T-Mobile is GSM! Haha. Sprint has the ability to control the devices their customers buy and insures that all are bought from Sprint. But I think that if they switched over to GSM and screwed WiMax and went completely 4G LTE, the Sprint network would be so much better...also because I can just pop in any sim card...lol HIT THANKS IF YOU AGREE WITH ME!

Not gonna happen. Sprint is hemorrhaging money and customers so a total rework to their network isn't gonna happen. Not to mention what would happen existing contract customers with CDMA phones.
What I'm saying is that Sprint slowly shift over, much like Verizon did. So sprint will still support CDMA and GSM until all their customers have then purchased GSM phones on Sprint. But they'll still have to support CDMA for the iPhone.. :/

Verizon Wireless uses the CDMA network. The 4G LTE is really close to GSM technology, but it is still considered CDMA. The only GSM Verizon has are their "Global" phones, which run on the CDMA network in the US but have a Sim Card slot to run on GSM networks (once you get the Sim Card)

You and you're CSR (Customer Service Rep) don't know anything apparently. Verizon is a CDMA network.
Ok, just to correct myself a bit. I see that verizon gives Sim Cards for the 4G LTE phones, ONLY for the 4G to run. Technically if you take that out you can still make calls and text. But still, the LTE runs on a CDMA network, AFAIK.
Oh okay. Thanks for the explanation. I should have known that it couldn't be true. The rep just wanted me to sign lol

If you're the leader/founder of an android related website.....you should already know the difference between CDMA and GSM
CDMA: Code Divisional Multiple Access
GSM: Global Standard (for) Mobile
GSM is used worldwide, with the exception of Sprint, Verizon, and some Prepaid MVNOs like Boost Virgin Mobile and Metro PCS. (Those I just listed all use CDMA technology.)
With the exception of soft hand offs between towers (CDMA is better at this) GSM is a better technology. There is also a similar standard used in parts of Asia called TDMA
TDMA: Time Divisional Multiple Access.
Throwing bricks since 2008.....and proud of it.
Lol know whats whack? Japanese 3G-only network despite using sims in every carrier.
I am the leader but since this is a new group, we only have worked with Sprint devices.....no other.

If I scavenge around this site and Google hard enough, I can find this question asked a few times, but none have definitive answers. This is a phone that I'm extremely interested in purchasing, as the Sony XPeria Z and Samsung Galaxy S 4 don't have an appeal remotely close to that of the HTC One's. Wind Mobile is a hard carrier to find phones for it seems, but I'd really love to use this phone on my network. Since the international and LTE variant lack the AWS 3G band to support Wind, would the T-Mobile version be compatible? On T-Mobile's website, it states that the UMTS Band IV is 1700/2100, which should be compatible with Wind's 3G network. I would just like to confirm this is true? Normally, I don't like to start new threads to a simple natured question like this, but I'm pretty much desperate to confirm whether or not I can use this phone. That way I'll know whether or not to get excited, or just stick with my S3. Thanks, it's much appreciated.

Was on wind in the past, yea it's hard to find devices for this carrier because it's strictly on AWS for its data and services.
The HTC One might work...but if I recall correctly you need 1700/1900/2100 frequencies for HSPA+ or something.
If it's anything like the original Galaxy Note, you may have to flash a radio or something to make it compatible with wind IF this phone is pentaband. If it isn't, f forget it because no amount of radio flashing will work if it the hardware doesn't support it.

At least on the GPe there aren't CDMA radios (WCDMA is different from CDMA and not what Sprint uses). Sim unlocking won't help.
It's just like the M7 dev edition, it does NOT work on Sprint.

Yes, the dev edition comes with an unlocked bootloader. This doesn't mean you can't unlock the bootloader of a "regular" version M8. But we'll have to wait for that, and hope your carrier doesn't block it.

Thanks to everyone for your guidance. I guess I'm going to have to wait for another phone. I was willing to buy the M8 if I could use it on both CDMA and GSM carriers, but it looks like only the Verizon variant has all the necessary hardware. Why would HTC not put the same radios in both CDMA models? I guess every penny counts when you are trying to keep costs down. This is the comparable chart from the M7.

that app your referring to is the same menu as going into *#*#4636#*#*
also, HSPA, LTE, GSM, etc is not the band type, its a network type.. by Band type I mean LTE: Bands: 1/3/4/7/17/38/40, which is also another way to describe radio frequency
as you can see in the first pic of my first post, in the Samsung device, it shows Band 4

That's all fine and dandy, but it's not like your carrier is operating multiple frequencies that you're likely to see ever. Maybe if you live in an incredibly dense population center, but even then... Perhaps I'm missing something.

Fair enough, if you have LTE already, and they are simply deploying a new frequency, you likely won't notice any change, to any of the service. Speeds don't increase between bands, the only reason a carrier deploys a new band, is to fight radio interference from other carriers. Given the cost of a single radio, carriers generally only deploy these new radios in VERY congested areas. Meaning, that in a city that has, say 15 towers, 2-3 of them would actually get the upgrade, in the area that suffers from the most interference. (You have to bear in mind, that a full tower build, requires 6 radios, each radio costing about $18,000 for the radio, another $1000 for the antenna, another $500-1500 for the power supply and cabling. They don't just "upgrade" an entire area, it takes too long to recoup costs)

Ah my mistake, i had in my head he meant to check for bands in the area which he can use with the 'unlocked' frequency mod..for some reason. My total mistake!
However what i meant with what i said when i get my 4g is that i can confirm that the unlock mod will enable band 20 since our OPO is restricted/doesnt support it by default. The band app would be good though!
