Doused my G1 in water, screen fried...what to buy next? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Crap.
After spending two days rewriting Phone.apk to stop the quick screen timeouts and finally getting it installed and working happily on my phone, I drop the frickin thing in a puddle!
So I tried all the crazy stuff. Bathed it in alcohol, let it dry by an air conditioning vent overnight, left it in a bag of rice overnight. It sorta works, but at max brightness it is about like 10-20% on your screen, and you can see "bubbles" in the background. I will probably buy a replacement LCD screen, but it's hard to tell if there isn't more wrong with the phone at this point. I need this thing working right away, so this old one is officially becoming a backup phone.
My question: Do I get a new MyTouch 3G in two weeks, or buy another G1? I really love the G1's physical keyboard, but I also like the increased performance of the MyTouch. Any suggestions are appreciated.

That bones man, sorry to hear that. If you decide to wait and want the performance, Just wait for the hero and order an unlocked one. No 3G, but IMO worth the loss for the other gains.

Diamond flooded:(

Was geting out of the car today, and dropped the phone in to the water.
There is mist under the screen . And now touch screen not working.
Please help, is there any cure for this?
First, be very greatfull you still have a semi-working device!
Second, install MS Voice Command - this should give you some functionality
Third, if you search on the forums for the service manual and and get one of these.
I'm told its a very tricky job but as its a touch phone and you have lost your touch, its got to be worth a try!
usually, when electronic devices get wet, you should immediately remove the battery and let it totally dry before turning it on.
And then send it for repair or diagnostics to make sure it's still functioning. At this point, I think your best bet is to send it for repairs.
Good luck, hope it's still repairable.
turn it off and leave it somewhere warm for a day or two.
then turn it back on.
if it is still not working right you need it repaired.
Take the battery out, and then pack your diamond tight, submerged, in a bowl of uncooked rice.
Trust me I've seen this work miracles before. The rice draws out all the moisture, it's amazing. Then cross your fingers and hope you got that battery out in time...
You'll need to leave it in the rice for at least 24 hours.
Good luck
p.s. Put the battery in the rice also.

You can cause problems when you cut corners like that... Static electricity is one.
Ok, so far everithing in working (GPS,camera,g-sen,phone,), and the touch screen works again, but the bloody screen... lots of watermarks on it.
I wouldn't worry about that, that's good so far. A mate of mine dropped his i-mate in a pool and he brought it back to life (with the rice trick) and his screen had those watermarks for a week. In fact it looked really cool, the background had this awesome colour to it, and the LCD had this strange depth to it (no pun intended) it was quite funny really, he was upset it went back to normal in one week!
this is probably the same "stuff" you would get on a window. I suspect that you may need to open it up and clear this away from the underside of the screen. Guess you could try some pressurised air BUT this may be too strong for a delicate phone.....
Is it possible to separate screen cover from screen(background)???
Cause its get worse with time. Couple hours ago, mist(water) was on 5% of the screen, and now on whole 80%. Now there is no white color but grey.
Just put your phone in rice.
Leave you phone turned off in some rice for I'd say 2 days, but you clearly want to use it to the extent you turned it on when it was still wet (very bad idea your lucky) so I would suggest you put it in dry rice every night off whilst you sleep and hopefully that will aid the drying process.
Next time take out the battery as soon as you possibly can. Take it apart as much as your comfortable with doing and leave it in rice for a min of one whole day.

Yeah i get it, but im on work now and i Need to use it. I cant get rice right away. So i'v put it on the betacam (kind of expensive heater).
Comparing to my friends SE K850 (that was flooded ider) my Diamond is in the good working order, when he flooded his SE - Camera,Speakers = dead ,Phone = no network ,Display = waved. When mine was showing new mail massage from underwater
Anyway thanks everybody for your respond.
I'l wait couple days for screen to get back to normal. will post if something changes.
Right, was unable to find the rice, but rolled in toilet paper for 1 hour. And hey presto now its fully functional, no any marks.
Solved.
But thing near strap holder is red now

Has anyone ever broken the sliding/tilting mechanism?

Has anyone ever broken the sliding/tilting mechanism on the Tilt under relatively normal usage? How sturdy/fragile is it? I guess I'm just a bit OCD about it, and am afraid I'm going to watch the screen fly off or something one of these days when I slide it open.
There are reports of the mechanism breaking, of course, but it seems pretty sturdy to me.
I never open or close it very quickly, though, and make sure the screen is down flat before trying to close.
And to be honest, I don't use the keyboard as much as I thought I would -- just when I need to compose a lengthy note or play Guitar Hero
I had mine for about a month, and used the crap out of it. I would load movies and open it up and sit it on my desk, etc. Then one day, it just wouldn't stay tilted anymore. Took it back to AT&T, and they replaced it on the spot. They gave me the line about being careful, but I was always very gentle with it -
My phone has been through quite some hardships...and the tilt functionality has yet to be compromised as a result. The 8925 is very sturdily built.
I use my tilt function a lot... now it's getting a bit loose, but it still works tho

co-sign to that...the Tilt is a very [physically] solid phone IMO.

HTC Destruction Anonymous?

Hi, My name is Hooty, I'm an HTC Killer. Tonight marks my 7th HTC phone to be destroyed in some form in my possession...
1. Jasjar - Screen
2. Dash - Screen shatter - replaced
3. Dash - Charging Circuit Fried
4. Advantage - Screen - replaced it.... then...
5. Advantage - Charging Circuit Fried (both related to 1 single bad charger...)
6. Diamond Euro - Slammed in a door and frame bent (screen survived miraculously, but permanently mis-aligned)
7. Diamond US - Fell in to a puddle from my laptop bag....
So this leads me up to my next question, the internals of the Diamond Euro seem to be just fine, it was just the frame and exterior that are bad, with the exception being the screen... Is it feasible to change out the radio and any other boards affect by the water for the unwatered down parts from the Euro version? or are they non-interchangeable? I am not worried about the 3G capability as I use T-mobile US and of course they use off-frequencies for their 3G..... I have the manual downloaded and definitely have all of the tools (have done the screens on all of my devices myself, so technical prowess isn't the issue). Just need to know the interchangeability of the parts....

i would have thought the main board etc would be generic.
hmmm, let the phone drip dry over night in a warm room (after pulling sim, stylus, battery and back) and it seems to be doing alright with the exception of the triggered moisture indicator.... maybe I got lucky this time....

My wife's blue angel fell in the toilet... don't ask. Same thing though, I thought it was toast but after it had fully dried it worked fine, I won't comment on the smell Seriously though it lasted until I got sick of it.

HTC Dream Defects

Hi guys,
I was going to buy a used HTC Dream and I was wondering what defects or problems I should look for. So far I've read about people hearing buzzing during calls and squeaky cases. Obviously I would check if the phone would boot and make calls but I'm not sure what else could be wrong with it. Thank you.
I've had no problems with mine other than it squeaked when I got it like you mentioned. But that is easily fixed with an exacto knife and 30 seconds.
Defects? i have had no problems whats so ever with my phone since i have been having it...sound quality might be off but thats because of poor signal though
memory card comes loose all the time. sometimes from slight movement, sometimes from slamming the screen closed to fast. sometimes when sitting on the counter and nothing at all is touching it. this is a problem because if you have apps2sd and swap it will crash the phone and corrupt certain apps.
also my D and F keys are going out. The chin is a horrible design "feature". An attempt to make it look more like a phone but it just makes it hard to press buttons while it's on the table.
the amount of ram reported in specs is missleading. in other phones HTC makes they dont count the radio chips ram in the spec.
battery is pretty small. most people opt for the 2400MH one which makes the thing huge.
there is no 3.5mm jack. (wtf mates)
lots of wasted space on the front of the phone that could be used for more screen space.
the chin doesn't slide with the screen making a large block on the right side of the keyboard that makes it hard to type.
The price I pay for android
Sliding mechanism gets loose after a while
Poor battery life, no matter what you say.
Backlight on the keyboard is a tad bit uneven.
It doesn't dance the way I want it to.
Sometimes you can pop the SD card door off, which is annoying.
Strange camera that takes either fairly good pictures or absolutely terrible ones.
I can't run Crysis on it.
It causes you to have OCD and constantly update ROMs and be completely obsessed with it trying to make it better until the point you no longer have a social life and your one and only friend is your G1, then you finally brick it.

I gotta disagree with the chin.. I think its pretty awesome... ugly... but oh so useful... I've dropped my phone at least a dozen times and not a single scratch on the screen because the chin elevates the screen above the ground so its actually very hard to scratch the screen from dropping it ;D

ugly? i think it gives the phone character. like it says to other phones "i will kill you and eat your children and lick their blood off my chin because i have chin."
I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem, but from day one I found that the outer keys traveled further, and the inner keys (on the keyboard) didn't travel nearly as far. It's kinda annoying, as the outer keys feel nice to use >.>
But yeah other than that: battery life, my sdcard door had to be glued back on and the screen creaks on the bottom right corner (exacto knives ftw). It's still a damn good phone.

I can get 3 days charge out of my stock battery...... and that's browsing the internet for 2hrs a day and about 40 txts

Haha, the final part of your quote is true. If it's your only friend, and you brick it, well, you're a loner.
As for my HTC Dream, it's great. The battery life is poor though, I wish I could tweak it to "Supah High Energy Saver" Mode, I have to recharge it twice a day (one via USB at school, and one on AC at home).

I am sorry, but I do not believe that unless you are maybe browsing with 3G off, Wi-Fi off, Bluetooth off along with the display brightness at the lowest it will go. Then maybe. Why? Because I don't even use the internet for 2 hours a day, that is a lot and I still have to recharge at the end of the day. 3 days is what people using 2400mAh extended batteries are getting out of their phone.

Me too. Same keys. I have to practically MASH my f key down to get it to register lately. My D key works when I try using *just it*, but if I'm typing quickly it never does and then when I go back and press it, it seems to work with no problem.
Also, my DEL key is starting to go. ]
It also drives me nuts, when I'm typing, that the phone isn't vertically more symmetrical.
i can narrowly get 3 days out of my G1 with a 2400Mah bat, the stock battery is good for a day thats it.
the good part about the 2400 Mah bat besides the excellent bat life is that it makes the phone so large its much easier to type on the keyboard afterward IMO

broke kaiser digitizer can get HTC dram (tmob G1) for $135, should I?

I love my tilt. It needs work, I can do. But should I just get a new-like tmob G1 (htc dream?) and unlock it for ATT and styart hacking on that? How cool is the platform? Is it as much fun to have one of those and play on XDA?
You can get an entire screen for your kaiser for around $35 check out fonlogix. The dream is a good phone too, you can check them out on the forum.
I've gone through a screen replacement on my Kaiser--it works perfectly fine, although it was a pain in the you know what to take apart and put back together. Unfortunately, I guess I wasn't careful enough; the upper/lower halves of the phone don't line up perfectly, although its not a good deal. If you value your time (it will take 1 to 2 hours) and you don't want to screw up, just get a new phone. But if you enjoy DIY and want to save some $$ like I did, then go for it
By the way my brother has a G1 that I use a lot, it is a fantastic phone, the larger capacitive screen is a huge upgrade and there are tons of *excellent* ROMs.
Tilt screen replacemnt
I just put a screen in my wife's 8925 a couple minutes ago.
Took about 45 minutes
Remove top bezel, unplug screen, remove. Clean top housing where new screen/digitizer will be, place new in, attach connector and replace housing.
The right hand side, in the middle, is the toughest part to get back together. It may have been easier to put the top bezel back on if the whole phone was apart, but it seemed better to do as I did and not take lots apart.
45 minutes and less than $30 from ebay. Only problem is the screen is not aligned perfectly. most of the screen is proper, but the scroll bars that adjust the time in a new appointment have to be touched more to the right of the button instead of being able to use the whole button. I suppose I got a cheesy screen that the digitizer is not as good as the original one. Still she is happy, and that makes me happy!
@ Hangard
damn your good...guess I need more practice lol
youy folks already fixed your phones? wher'd you get yer reaplacements..
@hangard @ chambord
Where did you get yer digitizer+touchscreen? sounds like ebay. gotta link? how important r toolz?
So Im not clear Ive got spider cracks and 'ppols' of black and not hires display just B&W. Does that mean I need to get a digitizer or a DTGZER and touchscreen from ebay... seems like im finding a lot of digitizers for $10?
