Google Map and Multi Touch - G1 Apps and Games

Hello,
First of all, sorry for my English. (I am French)
Do you know if google map will be soon compatible multi - touch?
I thank you
Jeep

Google Maps will probably not feature multi-touch support until Android officially enables multi-touch right out of the box. The HTC Hero does have multi-touch, but only is app that HTC has heavily modded to support the technology. The Donut development branch seems to have multi-touch capabilities, but just like Cupcake, we will most liekly have to wait 4-6 months before it is fully functional.

[Good News] Multitouch on Diamond!!!

Here is how it works:
* not the display but the surface under the display of HTC Touch Diamond, HTC Touch Pro and other compatible phones from HTC - is actually a capacitive touch-area with multi-touch
* by now this surface is used mainly for "wheel" gestures for example to zoom-in/out (see our article about zooming with wheel in HTC Touch Diamond) or to fast-forward in player etc., and the multi-touch-ness of this surface is not used, but since it works (as seen above) HTC could implement "finger pinching gesture" and "finger spreading gesture" - for zooming for example. One could also implement "2 finger moving" for panning gesture for example too. One is for sure: it is supported in hardware and software can read it
* HTC previously already was revealing that the area under display is a capacitive touch-area, but nothing was mentioned about multi-touch - not all capacitive touch-areas are multi-touch at the same time!
* note: latest subnotebooks (netbooks) Eee PC from Asus have multi-touch touch-pad and no display with multi-touch but they use several multi-touch gestures (which work!) - what proves that HTC could do similar thing with multi-touch support in HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro
* to try it yourself download ZIP file here and use file NavDbgTool.exe from it
* you can see this multi-touch in action on a video here
Commentary: we think that it would be huge mistake of Microsoft not to include support for multi-touch in Windows Mobile 7. Now that Apple iPhone and iPhone 3G support multi-touch and many applications that take advantage of it have been released, it is obvious that no modern smartphone platform can get away without multi-touch. The fact that existing phones support multi-touch, albeit not in the display, shows that it is feasible in Windows Mobile too.
We have another thing to play beside the light sensor and the tilt sensor..

Just saw this on another forum....
Indeed, its great news, cant wait till we can enjoy this function along with Android....
Nice, but please use the search! We all know this since a few weeks, because we all talked about it in a few threads here on xda-devs.
Amazing
That is amazing. I wonder why the hell would HTC _not_ present this as another innovation. I've seen times and times again companies brag about "virtual" features that were never actually there (the "GPS" without GPS hardware of the first iPhone comes to mind), but rarely does one see a company implement such a great feature (such as multitouch) and don't even talk about it.
So is there an API for this?
this is great news
Multi touch is possible on the diamond
Check out this youtube link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3Owgcos_KY
Multi touch but not where you'd expect it to work.
Diamond Multi Touch
Found this on Engadget:

COOL!
Come on chefs... cook us up a multi touch ROM
Lovely,we now have 3 threads on this, all still visible on the main page. Can't we just use the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=418936
would work wonderfully with WM7, which also has multi-touch features, and also supports phones as low as the HTC touch dual, which has a 400MHz with 128RAM, while the HTC Diamond a 528MHz with 192RAM.
Great news!
dreaming right now of that WM7 cooked HTC Diamond TF3D ROM
Great find, thanks!
Merged everything!
does this work on the front screen of the diamond
?
Interesting. So the whole area with the hardware buttons is touch sensitive! That could be useful.
This could be really useful, but it isn't "real" multi touch.
Using the test tool, you'll notice that it's 3 separate touch areas - the left side, the right side, and the scroll wheel.
For instance, you can't touch twice on the left hand side of the screen.
I can see some pretty useful features where you can use the main touch screen, and the touch areas at the bottom independantly at the same time though.

Well. The GPS wihtout GPS has been working on any GSM phone for quite a while. Has nothing at all to do with the Fruit Phone my friend. It uses triangulation of GPS transceivers to give you a rough localization. So there. Fruit did not invent that. It's been built into Google maps since a few versions back.
now everything we need is an app to configure gestures, so that we can use this new feature of our jewel in everyday use. Any news about that?
I know that Diamond has "multi-touch" pad since a long time as I implemented this feature in my TouchXperience UI, but I didn't know there would be so much enthusiasm about it!
In fact, it is not really multi-touch, the whole control pad is divided in different sensitive zones (left, right, middle, navigation scroll and center pad), each zone is controlled individually and you can get finger position simultaneously on left/right part of the control pad and on the navigation scroll.
For those who didn't see it yet, I realized some videos demonstrating the use of Diamond sensitive pad in TouchXperience: www.touchxperience.com
But I didn't use "multi-touch" because I thought the interest of using two fingers on a so small surface is very limited and not so convenient... But maybe you could convince me of the contrary with some useful applications of multi-touch and I could work on it.
Engadget claims that the front screen is also multi-touch capable:
Even more interesting is the way that the handsets' entire front, capacitive surface (not just the 2.8-inch, 640 x 480 pixel display) can be used for multi-finger input.

i hope that we will convice you schaps to create a small application for multitouch in order to map some HW buttons which are missing on the Diamond (e.g - up-down can be associated with the "old" Button 2 or 3, etc...)
For me this is the real disadvantage of the Diamond - doesn't have HW keys
I really need some HW keys because now i have applications and games which i cannot use them without HW keys
I wonder if we could find source code for the debugging tools. Use of the multitouch capacitive area would be great for so many applications.

HTC Hero

Pop over to the HTC site and atke a look at this - it looks gob smackingly awesome

D'rath
I think it may be time for me to either switch from winmo (until wm7) or hope that the HTC Sense UI comes out on WM...
That's a really nice looking phone - hope the price is just as nice
Holy ****!
Its incredible!
Nice hit for Android and HTC Bravo!!!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kshGq8COSiM
Very nice looking phone, really liking the new UI, just like NG-Devil mentioned before, it seems that HTC has taken all the good bits from other UIs and blended them all together... Very interesting, D'Rath said it, tho, could use a bigger screen and screen resolution...

Nice to hear, that the UI should developed for Andrioid AND WinMo.
An a first look video at YouTube.
I hear it doesn't sync with outlook.
What about Tomtom.
If these things don't work then i wouldn't bother...

It's a "google-mobile-phone" (-> Android and not WinMo). ;-) Why Google should support Outlook, if they had an own (online-)pendant.
if any one has seen the "a week with the htc hero" videos from coolsmartphone on youtube, you will notice that the multitouch isn't present in all applications, so far it was demonstrated on the browser and pictures, but when the guy was using google maps, he wasn't pinching out to zoom in, he was using the zoom in button,
any one know if that will be implemented in the future firmware release?

Good observation. Still way better than the aging looking winmo though. Would be nice to have consistent interface still. Wonder why this is not enforced.
I hope the application store takes off more quickly. The device is not going to meet my requirements if I can't find replacements for my frequently used software applications, regardless of how slick the UI is.
Perhaps someone could start a new thread to share information on available applications for Hero?
Well, the HTC Hero is running on Android 1.5 so im asuming it should be able to run all the apps out so far (i may be wrong though)
n e ways i put some thought into why multitouch isnt on the google maps application, and this is what I think.
We all know now, that the HTC Hero isnt a "by Google" phone, The G1 and the Magic are but the Hero isnt.
Secondly, I remember reading somewhere that Google wouldnt put multitouch capability into their software because Apple requested it, hence the reason the G1 and the Magic dont have multitouch even though the hardware supports it.
So HTC must have realised that in order to compete with Apple they need to implement multitouch thus created their own picture viewer software and made a few alterations to the browser to enable multitouch, but other then that I doubt its going to be universal across the whole platform.

T9 Trace application available?

Just found an article (in Norwegian) about this application.
http://www.nuance.com/t9trace/
It's seems like a Swype competitor, but supports more languages, and to me, who needs Norwegian language input, it could be a better alternative.
Pictures show that Android platform is supported.
Couldn't find it in Marked, but the press release from 3 days ago may indicate that it will be available soon.

hmm seems like a good competitor for swype, i prefer their layout better than swypes.
Anyone would know where to find the .apk for T9 Trace ?
I asked for it on twitter and they told me it's not a software to download. It come with your phone or forget about it...
Almost looks like the SlideIt keyboard available on the market. That works great on my Nexus. I just wish I could long press keys for numbers or punctuation. I use that as Swype isn't available on the market and it works great.
Plus if you buy the full version, there are a lot of language dictionaries you can download for free to get support for the language.
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.dasur.slideit/
Here is the list of all the languages:
http://www.cyrket.com/search?market=android&q=slideit
if you google swyoe for my touch 3g you can use that. its all i use

Does it support Norwegian language and characters?
not sure actually would have to find out for yourself
i use en us
Still no way to get t9 trace ?
I am looking for the app on the market, the internet : nothing
any link to an apk ?
Its nearing a year....
No update about T9 trace... :-(
Definitely more then a year now, i cant find T9 trace anywhere, only old references to flex t9 which is trace but doesnt have the newer features that predict words like Swift key.
It really seems like good competition for the new Touchpal which swypes and predicts but just cant find it anywhere :-(

arabic/hebrew language support on nexus one?

hey everyone
is it possible to have robust arabic language support on the nexus one? I've looked all over the internet and most of the potential solutions i found were not really good; like on some you would be able to read arabic script but you couldn't write in arabic, and in some you can write in arabic and semi-read arabic script (the letters wouldn't be connected). please someone help!!!
1) Cyanogen 5.0.6 fully supports Hebrew and Arabic, to the extent of Gmail app that has an incorrect Email preview, letters backwards (can't be fixed, don't look for it). Can't say for Arabic, but Hebrew was tested thoroughly, working as well as it's currently possible on the device.
2) There's fully Arabized ROM by UAE in Development section.
Did you check both of those?
i tried cyanogens rom but i think it was an earlier version (the letters wouldn't connect, making it unintelligable). do you know if UAE's rom is based off of ayman's package?
Don't know, I believe not - he'd mention it. You can check:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=664184
Also, give a try to the latest CM (5.0.6). Gmail preview reversing isn't a big issue.
i just installed cyanogens new rom and i must say, the new UI is very attractive, the nexus boot animation is now bleu with an android in the centre on a skateboard. the application grid is now 5 apps across instaed of 4 and i especially enjoy the transparent sliding notification bar. strangely enough theres even more system RAM available than before and the phone itself seems a bit faster and more responsive.
for the most part it does exactly what i want (in terms of reading/writing semetic script) but my god....its soo buggy!! i was stuck in an endless google account sign-in loop during initial acct setup and the browser crashes repeatedly. the system sometimes forgets to reorientate writing direction irrespective of language; it writes latin script from right to left in addition to arabic script. however arabic characters are connected.
do u know of any other arabized roms or system hacks to implement arabic language support? if not, i will probably keep cyanogens 506 rom, because the benefits of it vastly outweigh the few imperfections

[Q] Standard Keyboard (NumberPad Keyboard) for WP7 (Swype alternative)

Hi Guys!
I´m terribly searching for some keyboard alternatives for WP7, but it seems like there aren´t any alternatives at the moment, right?
I would really appreciate the development of a standard (12 Button) Keyboard like it was implemented in WM 6.1 - 6.5 and is implented in every Android build, on which each button represents 3 or 4 signs. In my personal experience writing goes damn fast (with one hand...for me, it´s even faster than swype) on such a keyboard, even while walking, cycling or driving (yeeeea I know, don´t type and drive... ). I used such a keyboard also with WM 6.5 and Android...(the shown pics are just some (to be honest: not very good) examples to show what I mean)
The keyboard implemented in WP7 is quite okay, but the buttons are really small (at least this depends on how thick your fingers are?! ) and it is impossible for me to type in a comfortable way while I´m walking ...
what do you guys think? are there any solutions/will there be such a layout in near future?
hello,
im looking for the phone keyboard too with T9 , im much much faster on phomne keyboard would be good if anyone can add this on wp7
regards
Same for me... the keyboard in wp7 is not bad, but on wm6.5 with swipe or T9 it was much faster to write a message.
Anyone an idea?
I'm not sure this is an area that will see any change in the short term. Microsoft seem keen to keep this locked down like the iPhone.
*grrr*...that´s really kind of sad...I´m really not comfortable with the native keyboard. But hope dies last
You can't change the keyboard on WP7. Microsoft is not allowing it. I don't believe anybody has found a way to do it either.

Arguably you should add '...yet' to the above statement, although Apple have retained their policy of not allowing alternative keyboards.
A Google search suggests there is no obvious activity around Swype and WP7 and while there are a few things around suggesting that Dasur (SlideIT) were looking to release a WP7 version of their keyboard, there is nothing obvious to support this on their website.
They may have had information from MS that they are not opening up the keyboard? Or maybe it's in development...?
Any news here?
