I am going to soon install the Hero Rom but I have a question about updating it...I would like to have a lot of apps on my Ext partition so it would be problematic to keep wiping it and lots of trouble to keep all my music and photos as well...so since I would have a different SD card partitioned with all my stuff...would it be possible to take that sd card out...and use the stock sd card to update the Hero ROM's on my phone...like just having the update on that card, wiping and flashing and then putting in my partitioned card with all my apps and music... would that work..that way updating is as simple as switching sd cards to keep all my stuff???
Sorry for the long paragraph but if this works this will make me want to flash ROM updates more often.
Wiping doesn't effect your SD card, other then it breaks alot of apps. Your best bet is to reinstall ALL apps after a wipe so that way they don't FC. Putting the update on the SD card is easy and won't effect it, all your music should be there after a wipe from recovery.

ummm...i had reset my phone before when something wasnt working right and the problem was fixed...no root then. but music and photos were wiped out...it took me forever to download my 80 apps... and i saw on some thread here that if you use apps2Sd then you have to wipe the partition as well...and since I still will have the stock sd I mighters well use it...so I just want to know if everything will work if I switch Sd cards like that.

you dont have to wipe the ext all the time UNLESS you are goin to a different hero rom. i.e jachero to drizzy hero. i had to wipe my ext whenever i went to drizzy becuz i encountered a boot loop.
and whenever i do flash a new rom i always create a new folder on my desk top titled "g1 files (whatever date it is)" to create a back up my files just in case. and since swap recudes the sd card life its always best to create back up on the conmputer

Well in the last days I've been having problems uploading things from my sdcard from apps, I thought it was an a2sd issue so I removed my ext3 partition from my sdcard by entering parted and use rm 2, so when I rebooted it showed my previous home screen with the same apps and it said that app wasn't installed on phone so I check my internal storage and it said 11 mb of storage left and that didn't make any sense so then I wiped and formatted my sdcard and rebooted and it said 20 mb left so I enter my downloads from market and see that it says my apps are installed but they don't show on my app tray so I'm guessing that apps are not there but the phone is reading it wrong. So I wiped installed CM 3.9.7 again and now I can't install apps from market or anywhere else
shouldn't this be in the Q&A?
I saw your signature and your running ROM: Cyanogen's MOD (3.9.7)...
Cyanogen warned you NOT TO INSTALL Apps2sd!
Format your sdcard ext partion and then wipe and install Cyanogen's MOD...
Everything will go back to normal

No I didn't use any scripts to activata apps2sd because its automatic, what I'm trying to do is reverse apps2sd so I can install apps on my phone instead of my sdcard I already removed my ext 3 partition
do you have a card reader?

Yes I do have a card reader
If you are running Cyanogen's mod, then I don't believe you'll be able to have your apps on your phone unless you do NOT have an ext 2/3 partition. If your SD card is only Fat32, then the mod won't have any place to move the apps and will leave it on your phone.
Atleast that's how I understood it, if someone who actually knows what they are talking about contradicts me, go with them.

Yeah that's how it is, I had ext3 partition before but I removed it because I was having malfunctions with a lot of different apps so I thought removing the partition would do it but no now I can't install apps.
I want to undo apps2sd I don't want it anymore, I want apps installed on my phone
I would be to reformat your card to just fat32 (I would just do it in windows or ubuntu, I wouldn't run any scripts to do it). Then load up cyanogens rom on your card, wipe, and update. You will have a fresh install and apps should go to your phone and not SD.

ok i'll try doing that, tell you if it works later on
I would also clean out dalvik-cache
rm -r /data/dalvik-cache
I think that's where part of your problem is, don't quote me on that though
In my personal opinion, it's good to rebuild your dalvik-cache everynow and then just to make sure you don't have any junk in there. I suspect that you may have number of things in there since you did not uninstall apps but rather nuked the partition. Who knows... do it, it may help
Good luck

you are definitely the man haha it worked, i can install apps but have 55mbs of free space is that ok?
I would like to do a wipe and do a fresh install of cyans latest and greatest. I've considered re-partitioning my SD card.
I am not sure I need to, but was curious if 750/500/32 is still the best way to be.
Also, I did a Nandroid + Ext backup.... isn't this stored on the SD? If I wipe everything, wouldn't this backup be lost? I have never restored a backup and this "+ Ext" is new.... if I restore it, am I basically just restoring everything I wiped.... not sure I see the point of wiping then.
O, by re-partitioning my card, am I shortening its life?
Do you guys use Cyans save home to memory?
Do you guys still have compcache enabled?
Really lost... want to do housekeeping and keep my phone in tiptop shape. Any help is appreciated.
You don't need to wipe Fat32 just your EXT and Dalvik-cache. If you really want to reformat the whole SD card then back up you FAT32 which is the heart of your sd card to your PC. You'll be ok re-partitioning your sd your not going to kill it, but over time you might then you'll just have to dish out another 15 20 bucks for a new 8gig class 6 card.
Do you guys use Cyans save home to memory? I do now on 4.2.8.1 because all my apps kept vanishing from my desktop.
Do you guys still have compcache enabled? Ive always done this it makes the phone run faster
sorry I took so long to get back to you, anyone else got any help tips or something?
i wanted to know if you can install dreaimg.nbh through android sdk without using the sd card? i want to know this because i cant use my sd card at all and all of a sudden ive been getting force closes for every single action i make on the phone (main one i get is process com.android.inputmethod.latin and i cant text or go to my contacts. in short it force closes everything). i want to bring it back to factory and was thinking that might fix my sd problem. so please help, im getting annoyed with this and i dont want to go back and use my crappy samsung mysthic.

does anyone know how to plz i have the same problem wit the sd card reader i wipped my phone and its not allowing me to flash anything from the zip card and its ot the card its the reader so does anyone know how to fix??
First, both of you need to rule out SD card falilure/user error. Does your card work in your computer? Can you format it to FAT32? If you can and your phones can't see it or any other cards.... you might as well get a new phone. As far as LatinIME FCs, go download any VK from the market or install HTC IME (which is way nicer anyway), go into settings-locale&text and uncheck stock VK, check whatever new VK of your choice is. That will stop FCs

but is their no way that i can install a rom or anything thru adb or sumthing cuz like my phone doesnt have any rom on it right now so yeaa i havent used my g1 in like maybe 2 weeks=( so like i just wana load a rom and be able 2 use my phone i really dont care for da sdcard
If your SD card is broken, get a new one.
How can you logically expect to use the phone without one? I'm aware you CAN, but I mean there are so few ROM's out there that don't use A2SD, let alone you can't make nandroid backups, and some apps can't store data. Maybe I missed something, but is there a reason you can't just use a different SD card? You can buy an 8gb class 6 MicroSD for under $20. If you can afford the $200-500 phone....

It is possible if you unpack the update.zip and manually copy everything over to the right place, then flash the boot.img with fastboot.
Surely it's simpler to just buy a cheap card though? Without a2sd your choice of what to flash is going to be severely limited.
the sd slot does not work at all. i have 2 sd cards a 1gig and a 4 gig(class6), the problem is the rom is acting up and i cant correct the phone without reverting back to stock, but in order to do that i need the sd card slot to be working. thats why i want to know if you can push the file to the phones ram and try booting it from there or even do it from the computer. and i also wanted to see if bringing the phone back to stock would probably fix the sd slot. so if someone has an idea im open to trying it out
Super newb here, not looking to get flamed, and have been searching forums for a couple hours before posting this.
I rooted my phone
Flashed new heroc 1.6.2
Flashed Aloysius 2.1 (Not The Overclocked One)
Wiped Phone
Wipe All SD
Partitioned SD fat32+ext2+swap
Changed Ext2 to Ext3
Rebooted Phone
Phone will not start with the SD Card in it...I've even tried REdoing all of this in various orders...
The farthest I've gotten is getting it to boot up fresh with Aloysius 2.1, but still won't boot with the SD card inside.
FYI: Only reason I wanted to get a custom ROM in first place, is to have Apps2SD, if anyone knows of anything I can do here, or of another ROM to try....I'm down to try anything, just hoping that end result = Working Phone With SD Card, and Apps2SD

By "Wipe All SD" I assume you mean you formatted your SD Card? Can you still get into the recovery menu or is it totally stuck?
If you saved your nandroid backup (you made one... right?) and can get into recovery that is your easiest way back to a working phone... Once you've nandroided back I would try doing a factory wipe, wipe ext and dalvik on the card and flash the new rom and recovery image. I also would recommend you read farther into the Aloysius 2.1 thread, as he states that it does support A2SD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6182764&postcount=19
As for other roms, I'm a fan of Regaw Mod and Fresh, but that's just an opinion
Fresh 2.1.2 Includes A2SD, but you'll need a pretty speedy SD card (aka: not the stock one)
If you read, it boots with no sd card. So he should be able to get into recovery menu. If you cant do it with the sd card in, maybe try loading the card when the phone is in recovery. Or try formatting the card back. It sounds like a problem with apps2sd.
Disclaimer, I am a complete noob but this is what it looks like. did you move your dalvik to the sd?
OK, I'm new to rooting and installing custom roms so bare with me here.
1. I've just installed CM6 on N1 and restore my backed up apps to SD card. Now if i install some other roms and restore these apps again. Will they like overlaps and take more space? Cuz we didn't format or touch sd card during installing new rom, only wipe stuffs from phone memory.
2. When i move apps to sd, these app still take some space in phone memory. Is there anyway to move everything completely. I take it doing this might crash these apps right? thankss
I just want to say that installing custom rom on android is a pain in the *&(*(&. There's various method, old and new scattered all over the internet.

Installing custom ROMs on Nexus is as easy as it gets.
Dont take this the wrong way but I've read the faq before i posted. Nothing in there.
No FAQ. In the Wiki there are guides for EVERYTHING, including approximate steps to install custom ROM.

If you want to format your SD card, go for it...
As for moving apps to SD not moving all data, there's two types of this.
Apps2SD, or what Froyo employs, moves the apk and mounts it to make it available to the system. Makes it slower to boot, mount the SD card, and only some apps support it and it you force it (or devs make bad decisions in their manifest) it can break widgets or apps that need to run 24/7.
Apps2Ext, or what most custom ROMs make available (Darktremor) moves the apks entirely to an ext partition on the SD card and this works with all apps, widgets, etc.
In both cases, the app DATA is still on /data, as well as dalvik cache. So for me, 120 apps on my Nexus One is about the limit as I run out of space in data primarily from dalvik cache.
There are also ways to move dalvik cache to SD but there are performance hits.
