My friend has a unbranded X1, but don't know if can be compatible for the 3G network in Canada or USA? Anyone knows? Or North American ROM needs to be flashed on to enable 3G compatibility with the Carriers in North American??
Thanks in advance for any inputs

This is a very vexed issue. Please read the thread on 850Mhz 3G connection.
The short answer is:
1) "unbranded X1" is irrelevant. Use Start>Settings>System>Device ID to find the actual device version, ie. X1i or X1a
2) if your friend is lucky and the Device ID is X1a, then the device is capable of connection to the US/Aus/S America/S Africa 850Mhz 3G band
3) if the Device ID is X1i, then no such luck. This is a hardware issue, not firmware
Both will connect to the 2100Mhz UMTS band which is commonly used in cities, so if your friend never ventures outside cities the X1i should work OK for 3G
I have a question on this, when SE 1st released info about X1, they mentioned that it's Quand band GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS/3G 850, 900, 1900, 2100. Why when they released it, they had to make 2 versions to support different networks? I think that this is stupid, they can do that for branded phones but not for SE unbraded phones, exactly like HTC and the HD, Diamond and Pro. We pay a lot of money for these for so at least give us full functionality... especially that these phones are more of business phones, so it's expected that people travel with these phones....or am i wrong about that?
thanks
I have an X1i in the US an it works flawless on the AT&T network with 3G (inc. HSDPA!!!)

yeah that would be great to know.. Im in LA and i was looking to get one. I know that ATT 3G works both 850 and 1900, but depending on where you are there's one band stronger than the other.
Thanks for the info man.
I really appreciated.
Does anyone know what what band is Rogers 3G running on?

You answer is HERE (google search, first link displayed for "wikipedia rogers 3G": the band has always been there waiting for you to read it under "Services": Rogers 3G 850MHz) so you need the X1a, the X1i won't pick that band
Sorry to bother but this has been posted before (read and search before asking)

I'm also on ATT in Colorado (Windsor/Ft. Collins area) and get 3G almost all the time. I've been all over the state and have got 3G service just about everywhere, only rolling over to Edge from time to time.
Oh and I've got an X1i.

Gr8 thanks for the info
yeah, I don't get any 3G in canada with my X1i.
I live in Vancouver BC, always in Edge.
I have had an occurence once, but only once! =[
I get HSDPA in the Dallas\Ft. Worth Area, and in Lawton, OK. Everywhere else I go I'm on Edge. And this is with a X1a on ATT.

Nobody in the US uses 2100MHz, AFAIK, and I'm pretty sure Canada follows the same frequencies.
1900, on the other hand, is supported by the X1i, which is used by AT&T, Rogers, and Bell.
The downside is that if you're unfortunate enough to use T-Mobile, the network uses 850MHz only, and you're stuck with EDGE.
man guy this is too simple to find and you open a thread for this??!!??!?! STOP CLOGGING THE FORUMS!!!!!
Can I flash my X1i with a X1a ROM?
I have an UK phone and I am trying to make the 3G working in Brazil which operator uses GSM 1800 & UMTS 850.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Sure not a problem. dont forget hard spl
Yes you can flash it
But you can't enable or disable other band than the ones in the manual specification....

Thanks for your reply!
So, you are saying that after flashing I'll be able to use X1a's band only? Please clarify...
I know that the X1i comes with:
GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100+900)
GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)
So, according to the bands above, the X1 is able to connect in FOUR GSM bands and FOUR UMTS bands, but unfortunately has only two combinations (the ones above) for X1i...
For my X1i's 3G network to work in Brazil, I need to use a combination like 1800's GSM band & 850's UMTS band.
Please correct me if I am wrong... thanks!
wcrov
yes you can flash an x1a rom.
however, IT ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THE 3G BANDS.
it's a hardware issue. the x1i is ONLY capable of 900, 1900, and 2100. changing the rom will NOT change this.

Sorry, but that doesn't make sense... why my X1i shows FOUR bands for GSM and FOUR bands for UMTS?
GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100+900)
GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)
Looks like the X1i is 850 capable but only on 1900 GSM networks...
So it must have a way to combine the GSM(1800) with UMTS(850)...just wondering...
it doesn't have to make sense. that's just how it is.
why don't things fall up instead of falling down?
i don't know, that's just how it is.

Newton is mad now!
I have recently buyed to a friend this phone, and I can't connect to my provider 3G network. Reading, I saw that it is because I have X1i, and I need X1a (I live in Argentina, South America).
Well, is possible to turn my X1i to X1a?
Please help!
P.D.: Sorry for my English.
Sorry, I don't think you can do that, since this is a hardware issue....But, I'm not too sure.

You just need to flash a NAM (North American) ROM if you want to change it to X1A. You can check on the ROM section of this forum.

no..
its a chipset issue, there is nothing you can do.
^^^ what he said....
there is no way, I sold my X1i and bought an X1a because I need my HSDPA.
The slower camera framerate doesn't make a diff, I don't take videos with my phone anyways.
what is the difference between Xi1 an X1a
and which one is the latest ?
Few Weeks Back I purchased X1i
and change the ROM to ENERGY ROM .. which was the best Stable ROM SO far.
please suggest
"what is the difference between Xi1 an X1a
and which one is the latest ?"
the cpu is the difference
non of them are the latests
x1i use qualcomm MSM7200a
which support the frequencies used outside of usa and
support 30fps video capture which because of a lawsuit from broadcomm
qualcomm can't offer in usa
x1a use qualcomm MSM7201A
which support the frequencies used inside of usa and
don't support 30fps video capture which because of a lawsuit from broadcomm
qualcomm can't offer in usa
I was just in the USA and I have an X1i. I could make calls just fine with it. If I have it correctly, the only difference is in 3G networks. The x1i uses UMTS 900MHz (amongst others) while in America (not sure if just north or both north and south America) they use the 850MHz band (amongst others). This, however, is a hardware issue that you cannot change.
Luckily, you'll still be able to use the other 3G bands, so you should still be able to get on 3G. Plus, both the X1i and X1a have the same quad band GSM Frequencies that means they are both capable of working on any 2G network in the world.
i have an X1i and live in the united states. i can never, ever connect to 3G, only Edge or HSDPA can be connected to. really it's fine, i'm on HSDPA the majority of the time, especially since i live and work in Los Angeles. and HSDPA is always blazing fast for me, especially at full reception......
I have X1i in Canada. Reflashing US rom makes it reports X1a, but 3G is still not available.

HSDPA is 3g: GPRS is 2G, EDGE is improved 2G; UMTS is 3G and HSDPA is improved 3G.
X1a is 850/1900/2100 Mhz 3G, AT&T uses both 850 and 1900. X1i uses 900/1900/2100 3G.
This means if you are on AT&T you may not get 3G with X1i (depending on the frequencies in your area). If you are on T-Mobile in U.S. then it doesn't matter because they use 1700Mhz 3G and neither X1i or X1a will work on 3G, and they will perform equally well (except for the video framerate issue which has been discussed earlier in this thread).
If you are not in U.S. or Australia (They use 850Mhz also) than get X1i. If you want to be sure you will get 3G service in U.S. on AT&T than get X1a. I think Australian providers all use NextG which is 850Mhz so they will also use X1a.
This is HARDWARE difference. Changing software/ROM will NOT change these frequency differences.
I hope this ends this thread because this has been covered many times in many places, both inside and outside of XDA-Developers.

yes i thought so, that's why i'm always confused as to how i can lock into HSDPA but never 3G. which is fine! it's just that i know i can get 3G in some areas i can't get HSDPA and can only get Edge, which is major slowage action...
I had an 1Xi it broke, sent it into SE here in the US. They could not fix it so they sent me a new phone today an X1A. The phone says X1A on the sticker behind the battery. But everywhere else on the phone it says X1i
Phone name is Xi1, Rom says Generic_UK
and i only get H connection on my 3g att sim.
What can i do ??
Does this even matter as i am planning on dowloading some of the custom roms here
Same here says x1i instea od x1a while I ahve x1a replaced
this is really really weird.
But the question does it matter what rom phone comes with if one is going to flash a new rom to it anways ?

Well, you will only find out which one works for you once you try the ROM's cooked in theis forum. I suggest that you try the one created by Agent_47. For me, and at the moment, it's one of the fastest and most stable ROM so far. Try this link and download version 2.9 FS-G. If that does not work, you can try others. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=512050

Sorry but could not help you there. I did not back-up my ROM when i first flash my device. If, for some reason, you do not want the cooked ROM that you flash, there is always an available original ROM on this forum.
and H connection under 3G icon place is showing you have HSDPA connected, what is alot faster then 3G
So from what everyone is saying it does not matter LOL
especailly with me putting custom roms in the phone.
Just funny how SE cant get their crap together and give u wrong rom with a phone model.
But what i dont get is the X1i and Xia has different hardware right. So how do does the same rom wrong on both models, regarding getting 3g. As in the usa we have different band from the rest of the world. Would that not mean u would need to download a custom rom that supports x1A ?? i dont see any roms out there that says they are for x1a or x1i.
Whoa hold on there. It certainly does matter if you had an X1a and they gave you an X1i! For ROMs it does not matter. They are interchangeable between the two. But it does matter in terms of network coverage.
First, to explain the H, UMTS is 3G. HSDPA and HSUPA are upgrades for downlink and uplink speeds to UMTS. Is you have both HSDPA and HSUPA, it is then just said that you have HSPA in which case you will see 'H' instead of '3G'. HSPA is sometimes called 3.5G.
ATT uses 1900mhz for 3G in some places and 850mhz in others, though most of the time it is 1900mhz. The X1i supports 3G on 1900mhz but NOT on 850mhz. The X1a supports both. So with an X1i there are some places that may have 3G and you wont get it. It sounds like 3G is on 1900mhz in your area so you see no difference but if you want to get 3G everywhere ATT has is you need your 'a' back. I have ATT and an X1i and dont mind. I get 3G in hampton roads and northern VA, as well as in NY. I am satisfied. Hopefully they will roll it out here in bburg soon (I was told by the store rep when I signed up that it would come this year) and hopefully on 1900mhz. YMMV.
*edit*
Looks like I read it wrong. You had an 'i' and they gave you an 'a'? Not such a disadvantage there but there is another issue. The X1i is capable of 30fps VGA video recording while the 'a' can only do 15fps and QVGA (due to a lawsuit on Qualcomm in the US; their video compression technology infringed on Broadcomm's IP). So advantages and disadvantages to each.
So physically i have XiA
i guess at the repair center they screwed up and installed the generic_uk rom.
So its better to have H, then the 3g logo? I live in houston texas and when i had my old x1i it also said H.
So when i install a custom rom this weekend(firestom 2.9 looks great)
I will still have an H instead of the 3g logo?

Yes H is better than 3G. On most phones with stock/carrier branded ROMS, the H symboly is disabled so that even if you have HSPA you will still see a '3G' icon. This is done because customers may not know what 'H' means and therefore may complain that they are not getting 3G coverage. Most custom ROMs leave the 'H' logo enabled.
So I take it you are sticking with the X1a? It is a toss up for me. I used to have t-mobile which does not have 3G on 1900 or 850 so it did not matter which X1 I got. I therefore opted for the one with better video recording. Now I switched to ATT. I get 3G signal in all the 3G covered areas that I have visited. As long as 3G here in Blacksburg (where I spend most of the year) comes in the 1900 flavor Ill keep my 'i'.
Hi, new to the forum, just got my x1 yesterday and am pretty upset with a lot the ways winmo 6.1 allows me to interact with my phone.
The dumping process uses a stock UK rom. Now clearly I have a north american rom. Can someone please help me clear up any confusion in this process?
yes it is the same process
so use the x1i rom?
I won't lose 850MHz functionality?
No need to worry. I flashed my first ROM after staring at the fish for 20 minutes and I've never regretted it Rest assured, 850MHz will work.

I'm not so sure about that, if you flash a ROM with an X1i radio installed. I doubt the radio from X1i ROMs are optimized for use on networks with the 850 band. So, I would likely flash back to an X1a radio to be on the safe side. Case in point, many people with X1i's in the US get US 3G, just not on the 850 band. Thus it would be hard to tell if your 850 band is working or not when you flash an X1i ROM that includes the X1i radio. In essence you might have working 3G, but it may not be as strong or pervasive of a signal as you had with an X1a radio.
Anyone care to chime in on this?

You can always flash an X1i ROM, then flash an X1a radio and rilphone if there is indeed a difference.
Video calling is the main omission i have found with the X1i roms.
