SPL / Radio - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First allow me to introduce myself...
I am Luke from Eastern United States. I'm a Technical Support Supervisor for a large company, I also do a lot of freelance web-design and developing/programming. I have owned 3 Iphones in the past few years. I developed several Iphone apps and I contributed heavily to the Jailbreaking scene for the iPhone for years. Nonetheless, I finally wised up and realized that the iPhone is not quite "that" great afterall. I began looking around at other phones and when all was said and done, I ended up getting a T-Mobile G1 - Used from eBay and sold my iPhones.
Now, I have a T-Mobile G1 and AT&T Pay-As-You-Go Service, which I have not purchased a SIM unlock code yet, hoping to find an alternative way to unlock it. So hope that sheds some light on where I'm coming from and I am really looking forward to using my Programming and Tech experience to contribute to this community.

I have spent the past week of my life on this forum, simply reading and researching. At this point I have a fully Rooted phone running JFv1.51_CRB43-ADP with a htc_hero_1.4.5 Theme. I have searched far and wide for information on SPL and Radio versions, upgrading and etc and have found very little helpful information. I have obviously found the SPLs for DREA100 & DREA110 (Orig, Eng, Hard) post and have read it multiple times but it does not give much preface.
So here's my questions, all related to the SPL and Radio...
Given the Technical Details I posted up above, I am going to assume that I should upgrade my SPL, correct?
Given the Technical Details I posted up above, I am going to assume that I should upgrade my RADIO, correct?
I Quote the following from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517593
"EDIT: It has been confirmed that you WILL brick your phone if you attempt to downgrade your radio after flashing the new SPL. So.. don't."
Okay, So if that quote is correct, then I assume that would mean that anyone who has rooted their phone, then applied HardSPL (as the guide says) is completely unable to downgrade/upgrade their Radio?
Finally, According to what I have read. The "proper" method for me to proceed would be to downgrade to RC29 > Re-Root > Re-update to JesusFreke version > update the radio > then finally update the spl.
But as someone else said, Would that not be the exact same state technically that I am in now? I understood that one should update the radio prior to updating to a Jesus Freke version or any other for that matter.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide, and I apologize for the questions if they seem very "nooby" but I absolutely cannot find definitive information on these topics anywhere.

My understanding, and don't quote me on this, is that the latest SPL, from Haykuro, requires the latest radio. Flashing that SPL without the Radio before hand, will brick the unit. So if you wanted to revert the radio and SPL, you'd have to downgrade the SPL, then the radio.
To unroot and return to stock firmware, you can just reapply RC29 and get the over the air upgrades back to normal. I haven't done it, I've had no reason to, but there are threads fully explaining it .

Currently, you need a sim unlock code to unlock your G1 for use with AT&T.
In regards to the bricking after downgrading the radio... it only applies if you have used the DangerSPL. If you have the HardSPL, EngSPL or the standard factory spl you have nothing to worry about.

You should defetinetly update your radio otherwise you'll run into some issues. You don't have to upgrade the the new spl (not hard, not engineering). The only reason people are upgrading there spl's is to put the new hero roms on cause it free's up space on your phone since the hero rom is much larger. But if you do want to upgrade your spl you got the steps right just make sure you update your radio first, make sure you have a pvt board (check by holdin in cam + power) and you will be good to go. If you want to get rid of the new "danger" spl all you have to is downgrade the spl to hardspl or whatever you want by the same update method. You won't want to downgrade your radio so you'll be good there.

you should try getting your hands on a rodger dream.. you can use att and have 3g with them..

What are keys? radio? SPL? (And other technical questions for the Rogers Dream)

Hey, I recently got a new HTC Dream from Rogers (in Canada) and promptly found this forum and rooted the thing. I've been looking around a bit and I have a basic grasp of what I can with my Dream (except I can't really flash anything seeing how nothing seems to work on the Rogers Dream). But some of the more technical concepts are scattered about everywhere; some of it written for only for the G1 or ADP or both and everything gets awkward or inconsistent.
Most of my technical information comes from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532419
http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=513061
It seems something (not too sure what it is exactly) is signed with release keys or test keys or private keys. What is signed exactly? How is it signed? What does it mean for the user (apparently I won't get OTA updates with roms because they're privately signed)? My phone says release keys, is that accurate and so do I get OTA updates? Should I want test keys installed?
I realize the radio firmware is supposed to updated to be compatible with new software but I'm not too clear on what it all is exactly. What is a radio firmware? Why exactly do I need it?
I boot into the SPL with Cam + Power; I get androids on on skateboards which is good and it's titled DREAM PVT and then HBoot-1.33.2005 (DREA2100). I press call to go to Fastboot. What is HBoot? What is DREA21000 (I assume it is synonymous to DREAM as the other SPLs seem to be titled with DREAXXXX)? Do I need/want a custom SPL? And what's Fastboot (I know I can use the fastboot to flash images)?
What are .nhb images? How are they different from... uh... .img images?
How can you brick your phone besides dicking around with it while flashing?
And roms are just different builds of Android, correct?
Some of my questions are a reaching into strange territory (my radio and SPL ones) but thanks for reading and if any of you can answer my questions or point me in the right direction that'd be great.

questions for updating radio

xda community,
sorry if it dosent belong here but if anything move it or lock it but really need help....
i received a replacement phone from tmobile with the radio 2.22.19.261 and that is the radio update we need...well i bricked 1 phone because i tried doing this and didnt notice that it had already the radio......what im concerned about is if i should skip the update radio step and just install the spl???? please some feedback would be greatly appreciated and once again sorry if it dosent belong here.
plz and thank you
the 2.22.26I is the radio that is needed to flash the 1.33.2005 spl. also make sure phone is a pvt instead of dvt by booting the phone into bootloader (camera and power) and find out on that screen. if you have both of those then the 1.33.2005 *should* (being the keyword) flash without problems.
it is a PVT board so you are suggesting i just flash the spl since the radio already came with the phone?

You should flash the Radio haykuro posted. I did just to be safe. I believe i saw one person brick even though he had the 26I radio, but i dont think he knew what he was doing.
if your gonna flash the .2005 spl, you might as well be extra safe and flash the radio. its only a few minutes more
quick update :
i went ahead and prayed that this went well.....since my g1 was pre-shipped with the newest RADIO version in an older g1 that had the newest radio i tried applying the Radio update and it bricked.....so this time i went ahead and (thanxz for the feedback) just flashed the SPL and VOILA !!! now i am testing the hero ROMs and BLUR rom.....thanks guys

update radio = bricked?!?!?! please help!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I rooted my phone using the "one click" root method (from standard Rogers 1.5 firmware) (http://zenthought.org/system/files/a...1-20090908.apk) and then updated to the latest radio:
•2.22.19.26I
•Baseband Version: 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I
•http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecod..._22_19_26I.zip
I initiall got the box with the arrow then the phone continued to the Rogers boot screen and has been stuck there for 20 minutes at least! So i took out the battery and turned it back on again and it get stuck on the Rogers screen still!
Have I bricked it!?! I thought you can only brick it when you update the SPL ... all I did was update the radio. Please HELP!
If it helps I was following the instructions step by step from: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/how...page=0,2
according to the cyanogen guide I bricked my phone:
2.Be very careful of any upgrade or mod instructions that require you to install an HTC "Recovery" zip/image, a replacement radio, or anything that might cause a difference of versions thereby bricking your phone.
eg: you currently have an EBI1 system and recovery image. If you boot an EBI0 radio image you will no longer be able to boot your phone.

Thanks in advance.
P.S. to clarfiy every button combination I press comes up with the Rogers boot screen. Unless I'm a complete idiot and am not pressing the buttons correctly I don't see how I can fix the phone if it won't boot! I though bricked phones are totaly duds (eg. they don't turn on/no charging lights...)
see if you can get it recovery mod? (home+end)
The main cause of bricks is using an SPL that is incompatible with the IPL (radio), hence it is possible not only to brick by changing the SPL, but also by changing the IPL.

Not a chance.
If all he did was change the IPL, then the ONLY cause for it doing locking as it is, is that the SPL is not compatible with that IPL. It is, therefore, bricked.
I didnt think that radio was compatible with the rogers phones, i thought that they had to use the 3.22.20.17 radio?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544654&highlight=rogers+root
if so that could be the cause of your brick!

Wow.... perhaps you should chill a little, these are Q&A forums, the purpose of which is to educate and help, not just baffle people with terms that its doubtful that they have heard before.
You'll see that i linked back to the thread that details everything that they should be to know not to make the mistake again, and anyone else that does a search will find it as well.
The rogers dream is compatiable with either radio. You just need your recovery/kernel version to match your radio version. The 2.22.19.26I radio needs 32B and 3.22.20.17 needs 32A recovery/kernel.
He needs to reflash the 3.22.20.17 radio then complete the rogers dream rooting guide on the cm wiki.

SPL question

I have tried searching the forum but I cannot find a straight answer on upgrading SPLs. I currently have a rooted G1 running CM5.0.8 and I have the engineering spl HBoot - 1.33.2005. My question is that I have seen versions 1.33.2010, and I am wondering what the differences are between and if it would be better to upgrade my device, i.e are there any improvements in the newer spl versions? Thank you to anyone that can provide me an answer!

No. There is nothing of benefit in 1.33.2010 for you.
There is no good reason to change the spl. magic users use 1.33.2009 and 1.33.2010, and nearly no dream users use them.
On the dream it will shrink data/system partitions (increasing cache) thus likely removing the functionality that made you installed danger for in the first place.
I have not seen a change in functionality if there is it's in an undocumented extended function I have not dirived a use for yet.
Both 1.33.2009 and 1.33.2010 also only support 2.x and 3.x radios like the danger spl. So its no safer to install on a dream than danger spl.

[Q] Bell HTC HD7-9295, Looking for Internet Sharing

Hey there, I've been digging through this forum for hours and can't seem to find what I was looking for so I figured I'd ask. I'm new to flashing custom roms (This is the first time I've decided to go about doing so) and as such am a complete newbie at this so sorry if I come off as slow.
I have an HTC HD7 (9295) running on Bell mobility and after several calls to tech support on both the Bell and HTC side I can't get either of them to tell me when I can expect internet sharing, as such I've decided "Screw waiting for the official update there has to be another way".
From what I've gathered there are lots of roms with internet sharing enabled on them however all of them that I've found mention HTC_Europe. I live in Canada not Europe and can't seem to see ANY roms that make reference to Canada, America, or NA.
The other part I'm a little stumped on is everywhere says not to use certain roms if my firmware is 4.xx (which it is, as per below) and plenty of places say to "Downgrade to an older version first" BUT I can't seem to find out how, all the versions with the 1.xx and 2.xx firmware have warnings saying "Don't use this if you have 4.xx or 5.xx" /facepalm
How do I go about getting Internet Sharing, thats all I care about. Either through a custom rom or a workaround to install another carriers update that will turn IS on without making my phone a paperweight?
My "About"
OS Version: 7.10.8107.79
Firmware Revision Number: 2250.21.40502.666
Hardware Revision Number: 0002
Radio Software Version: 5.69.09.29a_22.50.50.21U
Radio Hardware Version: A.24.0.D4
Bootloader Version: 4.5.2250.0(129185)
Chip SOC version: 2.2.5.0
HELP
EDIT: Okay so I -THINK- I have this figured out but would like a "Yes that will work" from someone before I start
1- to drop bootloader down from 4.x I simply flash a NoDo Rom (Like Schubert_BellMobility_WWE_2.16.666.02_Radio_5.64.09.11a_22.40.50.15U.7z)
2- Once I've rolled back the boot loader I install RSPL via "Task 00", then I Install HSPL via "Task 00"
3- Once I've installed the HSPL I can then flash the Deepshining Rom
Point of Concern 1) Now, This ROM states it's "Based on Shipped Tango ROM HTC Europe build 7.10.8773.98" does this mean It will only work with European Bands? Or will it work with my Bell SIM card on the Bell Network in Canada?
Point of Concern 2) If all this goes to hell, how hard is it to get back to the state I'm in now? (AKA Everything works but I don't have internet sharing at least until Bell pulls their head out of their *** and releases the drivers)
