I have been reading about upgrading the opal or viva by installing a new ROM. But I have also read people who have had problems while doing this.
I was wondering what is the process to dump the ROM my phone has? What tools do I need to download in order to do this?

From what i know, in backing up the factory can't be done this way you'll have to flash it into your rom the same way.

Kinda noob since diamond is my first ppc phone..
i am interested to flash to 1.37 as it seems to fix a few dreaded bugs like memory leak.. however cant seem to find a noob guide on in the forums
few questions
1) what are the common programs used to flash the rom?
2) After flashing the rom, all settings would be back to default?
I understand that i can use sprite backup to backup the settings
but can it still work after rom upgrade?
If so, after restoring the Rom using sprite, would it be back to the old rom version OR new rom version but previous settings?

This forum has about 7 different versions as well as links to Rom databases please use the search. And please post your questions in the Q&A section not the Dev section. Also Hero is not an application, it is a phone & build Sense is a UI that runs on these devices.
Look up at the top of the forum where it says "don't start a new post questions and answers here " click on that.....

(COPIED FROM HAYKURO's OFFICAIL THREAD)
Installation:
1. Download http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/app_s.zip
2. extract "app_s" into your sdcard's ext2 partition.
3. Download http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/hero-signed.zip
4. Place on regular sd card.
5. Reboot into recovery, wipe and flash.
6. Enjoy.
First of all, you need to root your phone, then you need to flash the new RADIO then flash new SPL,then create an ext2/3 partition on your class 6 sd card along with a linux swap partition, then you need to find a newer hero rom and flash that.

haykuro hero is OLD!! try a newer version hero_over or anyone

You need to get to reading before trying anything with your phone. If you flash something without following directions/knowing what you are doing, I can guarantee you will brick your phone.

just follow the links and read.....it seems hard but follow step for step and you will be fine. the good thing after you have rooted and installed radio/spl you wont have to do it again. and will be able to use any Hero/Dream(ROM).....
its been about 6months or more since i rooted my phone/ it just takes a bunch of reading and trial and error afterwards. goodluck!

Does anyone know how to build ROM(milestone)?. I want to backup my Milestone ROM, just in case.
who can tell me how to do it? eg. software, steps.

Yeah I'm kind of curious in finding out how to make a backup rom aswell.
i presume you're rooted ? boot into recovery and make a nandroid backup from there. done.
Anyone know of some sort of one click or easy rom installer that a beginner could do? I've rooted, but updating the g1 to froyo is just so intimidating. Anyone know of some sort of one click installer?
No. Several parts of the system need to be updated, so that isn't possible.
Just tell us what you need help with.
the "easiest" way to install a rom is through the ROM manager app that requires ClockwordMod recovery, but I've heard that it is pretty unreliable for the G1. I personally use AmonRa 1.7
same here. AmonRa is in fact the best way as it frees up the needed files to be changed or removed when installing a rom.
its quite simple to install a froyo rom. im a novice myself and found it easy to do. takes about 10 mins if you include collecting and transfering the files you need

most devs actually put this in their threads with the rom they have created. if not check out cyanogens wiki on his website. he has some information on how to do it on there.
I think all you really need to do is install the rom through amonra then if you want google apps, find one that will work with it and install that.
I'm sort of confused as to what AmonRa actually is. What does it do?

Mind giving your current setup is first?
ROM (which 1.6, CM4?) ? Recovery (RA-1.7.0 I guess)? SPL (Danger perhaps?)?

I'm not rooted and have no custom roms installed...just stock ota 1.6 donut...I know how to root. But the froyo part just confuses me. What's amonra and how is it used to install froyo? All the guides confuse me...can someone break down everything to a beginner level so I can understand it a little more? I'm naturally good at most tech stuff so I catch on quick...I need help though!

Hmm, lemme try. At least you're sure until the root part.
AmonRA is a recovery... the phone has system/boot, recovery, and fastboot.
Try reading ... hxxp://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Dream:_Rooting
then shoot a question on which part u actually aren't sure and I'll try to help. CyanogenMod 6 is based on Froyo, so I guess that's the one you want.

I just got this phone unfortunately there is no English option.
I see there is little in the way of custom roms so far however I was wondering if it is possible to flash a rom manually, so hopefully I can get a rom.with english.
I seen some guide some.of which include programs like Odin and others suggest a * # version from the phone.
If anyone knows have would appreciate it.
