Are there two physical radios in the Tilt/TyTN II? I ask because I'm experiencing a strange problem that nobody else seems to have seen before. That, or nobody noticed my posts here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335096
The problem is that phone/data work fine when the phone is in non-3G mode. (In the Comm Manager, available in most recent ROMs, I have disabled the 3G mode, so I'm using only GSM here in the US).
In 3G mode, I'll get a 3G icon (used to get an H, months ago), but will be unable to place/receive calls, and no data connections will be established -- they'll all time out or say that "the answering modem has disconnected."
So, back to my question: is it possible that my radio is partly damaged? Can that happen? I'm not sure how else to explain the utter lack of 3G on my phone.
can't have a damaged radio, you could have the wrong radio for the device and/or version of windows mobile. 3g only works if in 3g area,have it enabled and turned on through comm manager.also make sure you're network settings are correct and make sure phone is set to auto in networks tab in phone settings,not set to gsm/cdma
PS, the search tool/wiki are you're friends since this has been covered too many times

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I've tried everything I can think of, and everything suggested. Nearly ever ROM I've seen, with nearly every radio; every combination of wap.cingular, isp.cingular, etc. The AT&T store thinks the phone is defective b/c they can't figure it out, either. In response to your comments: tried every version of windows mobile and most of the radios available; I'm very much in a HSDPA 3G area (used to get 5 bars "H" all the time); 3G is enabled; network settings are correct; phone is set to auto/auto.
Any other ideas, anyone? I appreciate it!
I've been have the same exact problem. I posted about it about a month and a half ago, but got nothing.
Everything worked perfectly until one day, out of nowhere, 3G stopped working for me. I've also tried multiple radios and ROMs and to no avail. The weird thing is that when it stopped working, nothing had been changed in months.
I know that I'm definitely in a 3G coverage area because I used to get 3G service all the time.
If I turn 3G on, it'll work in an edge only area, but as soon as it switches over to WCDMA, the problems occur.
This is super aggravating.

Well, the good part is, you're not alone. I found another forum online (can't remember where, I'm at work now and I found it last night) were several people were having the exact same problem -- in various countries around the world, including the US.
They had decent luck flashing the stock HTC ROM and then the French radio mentioned on the big XDA radio post (search google for "kaiser radio" and you should see it). However, I did the same and still have the 3G problem.
did you try using a shipped att rom and see if you still have this problem? if the problem goes away, then maybe its just a rom/radio mismatch problem. if it doesnt, then its more likely a hardware failure.
I'm in france, and since few days, i've the same problem, and i haven't change the radio. the phone is going for repair.

Yep -- I've tried going all the way back to the original ROM and radio. No go.

Can you keep us posted on what happens when it comes back? If it's really a hardware problem, many inquiring minds would love to know.
Bonne chance!

As mentioned in this thread, some shipments of the TyTN II have faulty hardware with broken 3G support.
No patch or driver update can fix this because it is a hardware problem. I experienced exactly the same issue with my first TyTN II and finally replaced it with a new device which works flawlessly out of the box.
I believe you should also better get your device replaced if you ever want to use 3G.

Hi,
Ever since i upgraded to Xperia Radio 1.16, i've been experiencing a major issue with My Location function on multiple roms...it does not seem to update...does anyone have a solution for this or any troubleshooting ideas?
I tried the following:
- reflashed the old 1.14 and reflashed different roms...PROBLEM EXISTED
- reflashed the default spl and did a sony rom update to default rom, then reflashed spl and reflashed different roms...PROBLEM EXISTED.
- tried using googlemaps on each rom and then used My Location...PROBLEM EXISTED
- tried enabling/disabling My Location....PROBLEM EXISTED
- tried enabling aGPS/disabling aGPS....PROBLEM EXISTED
- tried combination both 1.16 + 1.14 rilphone....PROBLEM EXISTED
- tried adding my home town in my location and tried updating, it updates only the towns i put and not the My Location one....which i think is using data to update and my location uses either gps or agps....PROBLEM EXISTED
I think its either i fried something in the firmware where the aGPS is located...or since i flashed the radio without unlocking the xperia it might have corrupted it ?? Do we need to unlock the xperia before updating the radio?
Any one with ideas, please?
Thanks.
state which ROMs your having the problem with, i don't believe you have to unlock your phone. and if all your other "phone" functions work then i don't think the radio is your problem. also do you hard reset after each ROM flash? try that too. is this only over Data connection or is it via wi-fi too etc.
Sorry,
I've tried the following roms, with a hard reset even sometimes i did it twice.
Valkyrie v.5.5 21889 & 21885
EnergyRom Leo & Phoenix both 21889
Touch-IT BL Landscape 21889
I thought it was only with these new versions (21889) and tried a rom (EnergyRom Phoenix 21885 Dec 14th) which i had My Location working before the radio update the first time...it was working fine....but now i am using it on a daily basis and it has this problem, it just wont update...only rarely if i play around with settings and reset the xperia, it might work but 85% time it fails....
All other functions work...
i have not tried it over Wifi...i have 6GB data plan on Rogers Wireless Canada...it use to work with it on this same rom with radio 1.14, which is what i am on now....i never went back to 1.16 after the problem started!
thx for your help....
have you started google maps service for once? my location is part of google service, once you connect gsm to your provider, run google maps, click to agree their terms and condition, you are set.
yeah i did...tried that long time ago because i found it on one of the threads....still doesn't connect...on occasion it mite...but 85% it wont.....how does the My Location pull the information data? or aGPS? or GPS alone....
I'm using TouchX 10.9.1 "Nuts!", which supports the my location service. I'm having no trouble at all with the location service with radio version 1.16.25.48, so I would suggest your problem exists elsewhere.

what i thought is that once you connect to gsm provider, it will give your bts location which this info then fed to google maps service, hence weather info on that location. If you're going somewhere, weather info will be updated based on where your position at that time.
But i might be wrong ...try it - it is important that you click to agree during google map service setup.
yeah....i flashed the ROM then did a hard reset...then waited until the Connection wizard finished....then went to Googlemaps...agreed to all the information...even used gps function to locate me on the map. Then closed it and went to weather tab and hit update....it just updates the default cities and fails on My Location.....
I did not try WM 6.1 Roms just because i dont like it...but if it works on it i might try it later...and let you know...thank you for the information
Not a fan of 6.1? Personally I find 6.5.x to be comparatively unstable (After trying various roms, valkyrie, touch-it BL LS, etc, after recieving multiple crashes and/or reboots per day. MrRusch's TouchX 10.9.1 "Nuts!" is stable beyond any reasonable expectation, it's fast, and it's freakin' sexy.
Exact same problem started occuring for me just after midnight yesterday. Everything was working fine beforehand. I am using 1.16 /1.14 DLL and Valkyrie 5.5 23518
Same problem with 3G, fine with GPRS/EDGE
same problem in Touch X Nuts version with WM 6.1....the rom is very fast though and simple.... Something to note though is that it doesn't even come with Googlemaps pre-installed and the weather update worked and then stopped...after a reset...
issue could be in the cell tower you are connecting to. I have similar issue here - I am in Toronto, when I am at home, my phone initially thinks I am in downtown Montreal (until GPS taxes fix). That does not happen once I step into another cell tower (location works fine everywhere else). This started happening couple of months ago during the night. Similar experience to poster above. I suspect it is due to misconfigured stuff in the cell tower that serves me.
ok..i think its true about this tower problem...its been happening recently as well ever since Rogers started using HSDPA for their data connections in Ontario....i live in Hamilton Ontario....whenever i update using HSDPA i SOMETIMES get MY Location to point to ONTARIO but never to Hamilton..but on trying the above users tip (Switching to EDGE/GPRS) it seems to work 100% of the time with 100% accuracy...it says Hamilton...i just cant use EDGE here because its killing my battery....anyone have a solution to turn off EDGE like you can turn HSDPA off in the tweaks...i tried using the registry hack & tweaking using HD Tweak but neither work.....
Thank you guys for solving this issue...i hope ROGERS fixes their tower issue or we get an update to our phones that can make it work with HSDPA...
THX
I'm gonna suggest something, thats probably been tried.
Run QuickGPS and get the latest satellite info and try to update my location again.
Hi TS. I believe this is a problem that exist in WM6.5.3 ROMs... I tested a few and I was facing the same problem as u. Once I reverted back to older roms... my location we shown properly...
the My Location feature, has NOTHING to do with GPS.
It uses Cell location ID that finds your location based on where you are in proportion to the Mobile phone Tower(s?) your connected to. then this gets fed into Google which gives it a location to search
On some of the newer roms (Valkyrie being amongst them) you have to enable location service as it is not on by default. Just click weather tab and then menu and then enable the service.

LOL. Thanks for figuring out that I'm not nuts. I was alternatively getting locations in downtown Toronto or downtown Montreal for no rhyme or reason. Good to know that Ancaster is still near Hamilton and not in Quebec.
I am using Valkyrie ROM, and I have the same problem: cannot update my location in this ROM via GPRS or 3G, but I can still suft Web smoothly via 3g or GPRS and update location via Wifi.
Can anyone solve this problem?
heya,
I have a Nexus One with FRF83.
However, the GPS on this one never seems to work.
I've dowloaded "GPS Status" and "GPS Test", and both don't seem to display a single satellite. This is in a wide-clear area, standing still for around 10 minutes.
Is there any definitive way to diagnose whether it's a hardware issue, or whether it's software-related?
I suppose if it's hardware-related, I have to send it in to HTC *sigh*. And I'm in Australia, so from what I've heard that means I have to post it back to the US, where it was bought, right? Urgh. Which means I'm without my phone for a few weeks, possibly. It's a shame they can't do it locally.
Cheers,
Victor
heya,
I just thought I'd add that I think I've pretty much narrowed it down to a specific problem with my particular unit.
I've got another Nexus One, that I bought for my friend, also on 2.2 FRF83.
I took both up to the top of a hill, near my area - this is an Australian suburb, so we're talking quarter-acre blocks, a few trees, with more or less clear LOS to the sky.
I also tried the same test at my church, which is in a very rural area.
My unit wasn't able to pick up a single satellite at either location, using either "GPS Status" or "GPS Test". Her unit was able to pick one up in a manner of seconds.
I've uploaded a YouTube video of both units trying to get a fix here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVccDttQiLU
and screenshots here:
http://twitpic.com/20cpla/full
http://twitpic.com/20cpd1/full
I suppose there's no chance this could still be software related? (I recently did a factory reset - only had these units for around a week). Or is it definitely hardware related? Any other diagnostics I could run?
And if it is, I guess it's post back to the US, and wait a few weeks, right? *sigh*. Has anybody else had issues with their GPS?
Cheers,
Victor
Is your phone rooted? And did you get froyo OTA, I had this problem with the maps and it was because o didn't do a full wipe on my phone... which caused the maps to work improperly
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
are you guys using 850 or 900 N1?
Because mine (850) when i ised eclair was accurate, and now FRF50, FRF72 and FRF83 isnt any more...
I think this is just a software realted issue!
we just probably have to wait!
what radio are u using?
heya,
My phone isn't rooted, it's stock 2.2 FRF83.
It's the T-Mobile version, on the Optus network in Australia
And from what I can tell, it's not just in Maps - it's in any GPS utility - it doesn't just not get a fix on a satellite, it doesn't *see* any satellites at all. And the interesting thing is, my friend's Nexus One is also stock FRF83, works fine.
I just did a factory reset *sigh*, didn't sync/set anything, just installed GPS Status, still the same issue unfortunately, it just sits there, doesn't see any satellites.
donchele: Do you think you could install GPS Status (or GPS Test) and see if you see any satellites?
Cheers,
Victor

Have you tried pulling the battery for 5 or 10 minutes? Sounds to me like the ephemeris data might be screwed up.
When the Telstra branded Desire was first released in Australia Telstra screwed with the server settings that provided the ephemeris info breaking the GPS.
Have a look in with a file viewer at /etc/gps and see how it compares with this..
NTP_Server=north-america.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com
SUPL_PORT=7276
^^^^This is from EPE54B 2.1.1 850mhz N1
Do you have the stock MAPs application loaded only? Just that if you happened to have loaded the out of date Brut.All Maps Navigation v3 instead of his current 4.* version this will break your GPS too.
heya,
donchele: Thanks for that. Yeah, I tried with mine, I get a single empty green dot, which I think is the compass, but not any others, and no satellites show up (see http://twitpic.com/20cpla/) At least that's a clue that it seems to be hardware on mine.
logger: I just used ASTRO file manager to view that file, it seems to be identical to the one you posted.
Code:
NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com
SUPL_PORT=7276
Also, I just pulled the battery out for 15 minutes, to flush the ephemeris data.
Just rebooted, still nothing on "GPS Status" though =(.
Finally, I spoke to HTC US this morning - they said I can post it to them in the US, but they can only return it back to a US address. Urgh. So there's no "international" warranty as such. And HTC Australia won't handle it, since it's a US-purchased phone - even though I have all the original warranty documentation. The CSR said perhaps try calling HTC UK?
Has anybody here dealt with HTC support? I know this is blasphemy, and I loathe Apple's business practices, but I have to say, from my iPod and my sister's Macbook, their support is much better to deal with than HTC's...
Cheers,
Victor
Try leaving it stationary in a more or less clear position with GPS running for longer. Maybe 1/2 an hour or so. Cant hurt. If you can get the elusive first fix then it may well come good. Strikes me as unlikely the GPS hardware is faulty because they surely would have tested it.
Hi,
logger: Thanks for that. I did try for longer, just left it there in GPS Status, still no luck =(. I was really hoping initially it was just a software issue or something, to save me from sending it away.
Anyhow, I posted the device in yesterday to the HK service centre, will hopefully see where it goes.
Finally, in their email, it seemed like they were trying to say that I should arrange for a return courier to retrieve the phone.
http://twitpic.com/20wxf7
Does anybody know if this is normal practice with HTC? I'm happy to pay for postage to get it to the service centre, but I don't particularly feel it's my responsibility to arrange for a return. Do I have a case here?
Thanks,
Victor
Victor -
I'm having the same issues as you.
My configuration is the same except I'm up to the latest Froyo (FRF 85B, I think).
Let me know how your issue plays out.
heya,
severedembrace: Well, I posted the phone in yesterday, and also also sent them an email asking them to clarify the return postage issue.
They (HTC Hong Kong) rang around 19:43 last night (Wednesday) Australian-time, their accent was quite thick, but I think they were basically asking me to call them in regards to the email. I'm not sure why they didn't just reply to my email.
Anyhow, I called today, and get a message saying their opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm. I checked a list of HK holidays, turns out today is SAR establishment day or something, a public holiday in Hong Kong...lol.
I'll let you know how it pans out.
Also, when you say the same issue, do you mean you installed "GPS Test" or "GPS Status", and neither program is picking up a single satellite. Can you just confirm that please?
Cheers,
Victor
Installed both of 'em. No readings.
Pulled the battery for 15 minutes, did a factory reset.
No change.
I am also having the exact same issue I can't see any satellites using either of those softwares and I tried factory resets and pulling the battery for an hour... and nothing.. please update with how this turns out for you.. also running stock FRF91 and GPS was working perfectly in eclair before.
heya,
severedembrace/hayden1987: As per post #12, I sent in my phone to HTC Hong Kong, to get it looked at.
To be honest, my experience with HTC HK has been pretty abysmal. At first they tried to get me to both organise and pay for a return courier, for the repaired phone. I explained to them that it was a warranty-repair, and they had certain obligations to me, as a consumer, and while I was prepared (and already had paid for) the phone to be couriered to them, I certainly wasn't paying for return postage as well.
There was a bit of to-and-fro via email and phone calls, and eventually, after threatening to take them (HTC) to the HK Consumer Council, and also open proceedings in a small claims court in California against Google, they said that my case was a "special case", and they'd arrange to have it posted back to me.
I have no idea if the threats of legal proceedings and a formal complaint helped at all. If it did, it's a bit sad I had to resort to that to get a successful resolution to my case.
Also, why is it that Asian countries (I'm Chinese btw, just in case anybody decides to cry RACIST! Lol) always seem to have weaker consumer protection. In the UK, they have the distance selling regulations (Goods Act), which actually even helps them get reimbursement for the postage *to* the repair centre in certain cases.
It seems a bit unfair that if a product fails due to the manufacturer's fault, that HTC tries to make you pay even more, for postage both ways.
Anyhow, the Nexus One is scheduled to come back today, so I'll let you guys know how it goes, and if the GPS issue is resolved.
Cheers,
Victor
heya,
My Nexus One came back today.
Did a upgrade to 2.2 FRF91, then a factory reset.
At first, it didn't work and I was a bit worried. However, I was inside a building.
I took out the battery for 15 minutes, then took it outside, managed to see satellites and eventually get a fix.
So to the others - if you can't see any satellites at all, I think you should send it in, and get it repaired by HTC, while it's still under warranty...lol.
I did some googling before, and quite a few other people seem to experiencing similar issues, or at least just issues with the GPS. I suppose it's difficult to tell how many of those are software related. Still, I wonder if this is actually some kind of hardware issue with the Nexus One, and the GPS transmitter failing prematurely?
Cheers,
Victor
Thanks for the update Victor! hopefully I can get around to sending my phone in for a swap once exams are done
Currently running 2.2 FRF83, but I experienced this on 2.1 too...
Sometimes whilst browsing, the browser will stall when requesting a new web page. Eventually the page will timeout with a page unavailable or data connection error.
At the same time no other data functions work - email, Twitter etc. Also tried Dolphin browser but no luck, so I don't think its browser related.
The 3G icon shows both up/down arrows flashing as if it's requesting and receiving data.
While this is happening, a quick check of the phone info page does indeed show packet and byte counts increasing for both PPP Sent and PPP Received.
It's as if the data is coming down, but the phone doesn't recognise this.
To fix the issue I turn the radio off and back on. This immediately solves the issue, until it happens again, which could be in a few minutes again.
Have tried different radio settings like WCDMA Preferred, WCDMA Only, Auto prl etc. Still the same.
Has anyone else ever experienced this? Any possible solutions?
I have the same exact thing happening to me. I'm on AT&t in the US. Very frustrating, I was hoping that 2.2 would fix this. I've sent an email to Google regarding this and have yet to hear anything back.
So I'm not the only one then. It'll be interesting to see how many more Nexus One owners experience this issue.
Hope there's a solution somewhere out there.
Same ned a fix bad
Sent from my Nexus One
I get the same problem using the FroYo radio (4.06).
No problems with the older 4.04 radio though. Unfortunately I can't use that with 2.2 of course.
I was in America using At&t and had no problems with 2.1. I moved to Turkey and got on Turkcell and had problems then either.
I installed 2.2 (since the first ones came out FRF50) and am now on the latest and ever since I have had similar problems. I have to reboot the phone when this happens and then it works for many hours until it happens again.
When I go into market it pops up a dialogue box and makes me hit retry twice and then works.
It would be nice if this was straightened out.
I just got off the horn with Google support. The SE had me do *#*#INFO#*#* then bring up the menu and choose "select radio band" I then set the phone for "USA Band" the phone confirmed success. This seems to have worked for me. Hope it helps you.
Yep, I already have mine set to Euro Band. The "3G Freeze" still occurs for me.
Interested to hear how you get on with that Band setting nonetheless.
I'm on AT&T and had fantastic signals prior to the FRF83B update. Since I updated the radio, I'm having the exact same issues. It's becoming a pain when I'm trying to stream internet radio, because it cuts out every 20 or 30 seconds. I also noticed the other day, where I use to get strength, I had *no* reception.
Hi,
I recently updated to Froyo using the registry hack, i was on uk orange jf3 before.
Since being on it i have constantly been struggling with the 3g and the network signal, at first i thought the 3g was disconnecting when i turned the wifi on but then the network signal starting disappearing and it would show the circle symbol with the diagonal strike through it to show that it was not picking up any networks.
I read somewhere that cycling flight mode might solve the issue, but for some reason once i turn on/off flight mode it just hangs at that stage and will not change until after a restart.
I have also tried formatting both the internal and ext sd cards and i have done a factory reset twice.
Nothing has helped, it connects to 3g initially (which shows that it shouldn't be a setting problem?) and the network signal is also fine initially but then after a short amount of time or inactivity or switching on wifi the 3g won't connect and the network signal just dies.
If anyone has any ideas as to what is causing this or how to fix it i would really appreciate it.
Having a phone that can't make or receive calls when i need it to is really f'ing me off.
P.s. I have read and searched other topics for help on this but nothing so far has helped.
Might be something like I have? But I got no reply here...

Yer i read your post, what i don't understand is that it was totally fine in 2.1 and now in 2.2 it's messed up, not sure if that is the same for you?
I think it is something to do with it being for Norwegian users not UK and that somehow affects it.
I have checked the apn and it all seems correct, do you also have the issue with flight mode not working properly?
Just found this on an internet search...

Some news on the update to Android 2.2 for the Samsung Galaxy S. Currently we are making some changes to get it working better when using Orange signal, and are therefore looking to release the update by the end of November – obviously this is a delay on our original release date but we hope it will be worth the wait!
Kind Regards

Not sure exactly what that means but it sure sounds like this might be the problem i am having.
I would be interested to know if other UK orange users have been having problems?
I would also like to know if it is possible for me to go back to to a previous version so i can actually use my phone.
I am orange uk, and have similar problem at home, but works well at office. Maybe it is due to the barrier of signal. if the signal level is lower than this barrier, only emergency call can be.
I do not know how to do but my friend advised me to update the moderm
