Excessive time for ext2 partitioning - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm following TheUnlockr guide on installing hero roms. Everything was going smoothly until the SD card partitioning. Now I have an 8GB Patriot class 4 card. The fat32 part worked great, I used "mkpartfs primary fat32 0 7200" and within 10 seconds it completed. Next I typed "mkpartfs primary ext2 7200 7700" and it took forever to finally give me a status update. It says "writing per-group metadata... 2% (time left: 366:52). I watched other videos on partitioning the SD card and it takes like 2 min to complete that part. Why is it taking so long for me?

Honestly? Who knows... and we may never know without full log and even then....
Start partitioning again. If it doesn't work - partition some other way (using paragon, or gparted or something other the what you're using now)
Good luck

If you need another guide look in my sig.

1 fried SD card - A2SD

First of all, I normally don't post new threads. I've been using this site for a long time, and have always found the answers I need by simply searching and reading. I have searched, and read a lot, but have not found answers that I believe will help my specific problem. So here goes, thank you.
I am running CyanogenMod-4.0.4. I had A2SD set up on a 16GB micro SD card, using the sdparted utility. Everything worked perfectly for about 2 weeks, then my phone suddenly froze up. Pulled the battery, but it would not boot past the "T-Mobile G1" screen. I removed the SD card and everything was fine. I tried to repartition the card using both Mac Disk Utility and Gparted, then tried to set up a new partition table, but I got a corrupted filesystem error each time. That's old news, I've wiped my phone and found a new card, so now I need to know if I can safely set up A2SD.
The card is a 16GB Sandisk micro SD card - class 2.
I've done some reading suggesting that I do not need a linux-swap partition. Can I do this with just a Fat32 and ext3/4 partitions? Or because the card is class 2, do I need the swap?
Thanks again.
Swap is for the OS, not applications on the sd card. The only reason I use swap is for Hero, I have yet to go back to a donut filled cupcake rom with it on.
A2SD is pretty safe for the card, it's swap that you take the risk of shortening the lifespan of the card.
I assume you have cyan's recovery image, you should try to partition the card with parted instead of a computer utility. I really don't think a2sd is the reason for the card failure.
Your old card should still be under warranty.

Swap is not related to apps2sd, they are completely separate entities. "because the card is class 2" swap probably isn't a good idea, since it will likely be slow.
Apps2sd isn't particularly taxing to the SD card, particularly with ext2, writes are most damaging to a flash device.
Awesome. Thanks for the quick reply guys. I think I'll go ahead and use the sdparted utility to set up a partition for my apps, but leave off the swap.
Thanks again.

Big problems with CyanogenMod-4.2.11.1 and APPS2SD

Hi
I have some big problems when I use an EXT2, EXT3 ore EXT4 partition on my SD card.
I want to use APPS2SD to save memory space, but as soon as I make an EXT partition on my SD card, my phone always hangs all the time in the startup.
I get the Android logo, and that the screen goes black with background light, and hangs like that fore 30min with no change.
But if I eject my SD card and start up without it, it's no problem, but now all my programs are in the SD card so they are missing.
What I've done:
I had CyanogenMod-4.2.05.
Made an EXT3 partiotion on my SD card.
Made an linux-swap 31mb partiotion
Updatet to CyanogenMod-4.2.11.1 and than it started up, added my progs to the SD.
Had 1 reboot with no problem, tried to update some programs, than it hang up on the update, woudnt update.
So I had an reboot, that when it started up I got a lot of error messages on the updates.
Tried an new update, and now it wont start up with the SD inserted.
I tried ext partition on my erlier CyanogenMod but same problem than also...
What could my problem be?
Have an 8gb class 4 micro SD card
when I now trie to install programs I get an error message "Insuffcient storage availble"
Clearly this is a problem with your sdcard. Try complete re-format first, followed by complete wipe and re-flash. If that doesn't help then you need a new sdcard.
Good luck.
In what order are your partitions? It sounds like you no longer have the FAT32 as mmcblk0p1? Make sure the first partition is the FAT32, the second is EXT, and the third your swap.
Hi
Could be my card, it's an ebay card so, but works fine with music...
I use an guide fore formating my card, and I make the fat32 first, than ext and so the swap.
Now I tried to make an partition with ubuntu, and without the swap, but dosent seem to help, black screen after the adroid logo....
I guess I give up and its my card...
When i use the Print comand in parted i get the fat32 up first...
Print
number start end size type file system fla
gs
1 0 7500 7500mb primary fat32 lba
2 7500 8000 500mb primary ext2
3 8000 8032 32mb primary linux-swap(v1)
Use AmonRa's recovery? It will paritition the card for you the right way with whatever size partitions you specify.
Ok so my partition could be the problem?
ill try the AmonRa's recovery than, and if not I guess its not ment to be apps2sd on my phone...
Well, I wouldn't say that apps2sd is not ment for your phone since so many of us are using this hack (including myself) however this may be a tedious process of eliminating possible causes. I would not rule out the possibility of damaged SD card. It has happened before to many people. Re-format and re-partition your existing card first. Wipe everything off your phone, re-flash the rom of your choice (following the instructions) and see if it works. If it doesn't work - then I would look into getting a different SD card. I just received a tweet that compUSA has class 6 8GbB card with adapter for $30. I also saw something in "Dream accessories" forum in the "Promotions" thread, I believe 8GB card for $15 from Amazon. Cards are a lot cheaper then new phone, you should try that out. Good luck.
Ok.
I've now installed the AmonRa's recovery 1.5.2
Partition the card with AmonRa's recovery
Wiped data/factory
Shud I wipe dalvik-cache, battry status, and rotate settings also?
Wipe dalvik-cache, others should not matter for what you're trying to accomplish.
Ok thx.
I'll try that, if it doesnt work now, I'll buy an new sd card
So AmonRa's recovery didnt help, so I guess it's my sd card than.
Will buy an new one and test with that.
So fore now on it's low on space
Maby this time I will remember to take an backup when I have y phone the way I like, getting tierd of setting up my phone all the time

[Q] Having partition issues

I am having issues with trying to partition my SD card (Transcend 16GB class 6 fwiw.) When i go into recovery and after setting the parameters for the swap (0) and ext2 (512MB) partition and when i have the phone create the new partition it seems to give me the little 'i am working' dots forever and never finishes creating the new partition.
I have let the phone run until the entire screen is filled with the dots.
My smaller 2GB card partitions in about 45 seconds, so i dont think it is the software.
What can i do to save my SD card?
I have tried setting the swap and ext2 size to 0 and it successfully partitions the card that way. I have formatted the card through the phone and through my computer.
All help is appreciated, and i apologize if the answer is lying right in front of my face. I searched all of yesterday for this.

[Q] Problem making Win32Imager image

I'd like to copy the contents on my CM7 on an 8G Transcend uSD card to a Sandisk 8G card using Win32DiskImager on my Win 7 64 bit laptop. I've verified with EASUS that the Transcend is using the full 8G but when I create an image file it's only 4G. If I to write that to the Sandisk the process finishes almost immediately and writes nothing to the card. I've rebooted and tried several different external card readers with the same result. I have successfully used these to create 8G backup images previously so am stumped why the process isn't working this time. Suggestions?
Are you running Win32DiskImager as "Administrator"?

Which version of win32diskimager?
I find version "RELEASE-0.2-r23" to work best... it still always reads to about 4gig... bit it writes the image correctly.
Definitely make sure you're running with elevated priviledges (administrator). These disk imaging programs have the annoying habit of providing very little feedback when they fail due to an accounts rights issue. Took me a long time to figure this out when I first tried to install Phiremod and then again a month later when I decided to try an OC kernel (by this time I'd forgotten about the problem).

Ahhh... as I have disabled profile to prevent the priviledges issue in win7.... I forgot about that requirement.

Yes I ran it on an administrator account. Will have to check the version when I get home.
I had a really old version of the program. Downloaded the current version. It still creates a 4G img file but when I write it back to the new card it's the full 8G image. The contents of the boot partition look correct but the Nook just skips the SD card when booting up.
Next, I'm going to use Easeus to reduce the total used on the card to 4G, image that, write to new card and see what happens.
i have encountered win32image problem before where it fails to write to disk with erorr but when i use earlier version 0.1 it works
Followed these steps and the new card boots correctly:
- Use EASEUS to reduce the last partition so the total used on the card is 4G or less
- Use Win32DiskImager to read old card and write new card
- Use EASEUS to increase the last partition to full size.
Of course this only works if you can do the first step.
As an aside: performance with the new Sandisk card is considerable faster than the old card.
for some reason the new version of windisk imager does not write the image to the card properly for me. i always get corrupt data. i use an older windisk and everything works great. i'm on windows 7 if that makes a difference.

[Q] Link2Sd Right partition combination and slow sd card

Hi guys
I'm looking forward to use Link2sd so I installed minitoll partition wizard and tried to create 2 partitions:
1 Primary 7 Gb FAT32
1 Primary 0.6 Gb Ext2
i could never complete the task and partition wizard kept saying the sd card was unformatted. I found on anther thread that for some phones Ext2 partition did not work and that a second Fat32 could solve the issue.
I went down that road and the sd formatting went fine creating 2 Fat32 partition.
The BIG problem is that the sd card (Kingston 8 Gb class4) is extremely slow, getting all my backuo data back into it took like 30 hours.
Is this normal ?
What is the proper partition combination for the X8 on order to use Link2sd ??
Such slow writing speed to the sdcard seems a pretty high price to pay...is it worth ???

I used the same software to create partition in my Sandisc 8GB class2 SD card. It took around 10 mins to create and format the card with 7.5GB FAT32 and 0.5GB Ext2. Both are primary.
I suggest you to check the Card and software by interchanging them. That is try with same software on a new computer with this card and again on your machine try a new or another card.
Another way that you can make the partition in CWM recovery.
Positively there is something wrong, the time you mentioned is too unusual.
Hi
Thanks a lot, when you are so close to the trees you can't see the forest.jaja
After several combinations I realized that the sd card port on the laptop was defective. I used an usb adapter and partioned with minitools, just as you said and worked...finally.
Cheers
