Big problems with CyanogenMod-4.2.11.1 and APPS2SD - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have some big problems when I use an EXT2, EXT3 ore EXT4 partition on my SD card.
I want to use APPS2SD to save memory space, but as soon as I make an EXT partition on my SD card, my phone always hangs all the time in the startup.
I get the Android logo, and that the screen goes black with background light, and hangs like that fore 30min with no change.
But if I eject my SD card and start up without it, it's no problem, but now all my programs are in the SD card so they are missing.
What I've done:
I had CyanogenMod-4.2.05.
Made an EXT3 partiotion on my SD card.
Made an linux-swap 31mb partiotion
Updatet to CyanogenMod-4.2.11.1 and than it started up, added my progs to the SD.
Had 1 reboot with no problem, tried to update some programs, than it hang up on the update, woudnt update.
So I had an reboot, that when it started up I got a lot of error messages on the updates.
Tried an new update, and now it wont start up with the SD inserted.
I tried ext partition on my erlier CyanogenMod but same problem than also...
What could my problem be?
Have an 8gb class 4 micro SD card
when I now trie to install programs I get an error message "Insuffcient storage availble"

Clearly this is a problem with your sdcard. Try complete re-format first, followed by complete wipe and re-flash. If that doesn't help then you need a new sdcard.
Good luck.

In what order are your partitions? It sounds like you no longer have the FAT32 as mmcblk0p1? Make sure the first partition is the FAT32, the second is EXT, and the third your swap.

Hi
Could be my card, it's an ebay card so, but works fine with music...
I use an guide fore formating my card, and I make the fat32 first, than ext and so the swap.
Now I tried to make an partition with ubuntu, and without the swap, but dosent seem to help, black screen after the adroid logo....
I guess I give up and its my card...
When i use the Print comand in parted i get the fat32 up first...
Print
number start end size type file system fla
gs
1 0 7500 7500mb primary fat32 lba
2 7500 8000 500mb primary ext2
3 8000 8032 32mb primary linux-swap(v1)

Use AmonRa's recovery? It will paritition the card for you the right way with whatever size partitions you specify.

Ok so my partition could be the problem?
ill try the AmonRa's recovery than, and if not I guess its not ment to be apps2sd on my phone...

Well, I wouldn't say that apps2sd is not ment for your phone since so many of us are using this hack (including myself) however this may be a tedious process of eliminating possible causes. I would not rule out the possibility of damaged SD card. It has happened before to many people. Re-format and re-partition your existing card first. Wipe everything off your phone, re-flash the rom of your choice (following the instructions) and see if it works. If it doesn't work - then I would look into getting a different SD card. I just received a tweet that compUSA has class 6 8GbB card with adapter for $30. I also saw something in "Dream accessories" forum in the "Promotions" thread, I believe 8GB card for $15 from Amazon. Cards are a lot cheaper then new phone, you should try that out. Good luck.

Ok.
I've now installed the AmonRa's recovery 1.5.2
Partition the card with AmonRa's recovery
Wiped data/factory
Shud I wipe dalvik-cache, battry status, and rotate settings also?

Wipe dalvik-cache, others should not matter for what you're trying to accomplish.

Ok thx.
I'll try that, if it doesnt work now, I'll buy an new sd card

So AmonRa's recovery didnt help, so I guess it's my sd card than.
Will buy an new one and test with that.
So fore now on it's low on space
Maby this time I will remember to take an backup when I have y phone the way I like, getting tierd of setting up my phone all the time

Important question pertaining the Cyanogen auto apps2sd

Yesterday I upgraded to cyanogen's 4.0.4, it said that i would have to partition my sd card(8gb) to allow the apps2sd to automatically work, a friend of mines recommended Paragon Partition Manager, i installed it, and partition my sd card, to ext 3 format, so i have about 1.3 gb of partitioned sd card and about a little over 6 gigs for music and videos. The cyanogen FAQs said that " 4. How do I set up apps-to-sd?
You need to create a second partition on your SD card in the ext2/ext3/ext4 format. Search the forums if you don't know how to do this. Once created, the ROM will move your apps automatically and new apps will be installed to the SD by default. " but it hasnt freed up any space on my phone, and when i download new apps, it still goes directly to the phone. Am I doing somthing wrong and should i consider reformating the whole sd card, partioning over again and adding a lower amount for apps and a linux swap partion also.

You aren't meant to make one bigger than 1.5, yours is very close so it could be the issue.
A good way to check if its working is if space is being used up on the ext3. Go to Setting > SD > secondary partition.
Also try rebooting, you might find that your internal space increases afterwards.
If neither of those work then reformat and make a smaller ext partition. I'm struggling to fill up my 500mb, why anyone would need 1GB+ is beyond me.
also,i am noticing since i have done this partitioning, that if i have my sd card in the phone and reboot, that after the android boot screen, that my phone will go blank, and if i pull the card and battery out and reboot with no card in the phone will do fine.

Hold on. Your phone will only boot properly without the sdcard. You should not remove the card when the phone is on, because it can bork your entire partition.
If I was you I'd wipe the card and start over, adding a smaller ext partition.
ahh shoot, ok then, i just formatted the partion back to fat 32, so you suggest me to just, re partition it in ext 3 and make it smaller to about 500 mb should i also make a linux swap?
and also, although i formatted it back to fat 32, it wont let me merge the files back into 7.3 gigs. or maybe i am not doing it right.

merge files? got no idea what you're talking about.
Just wipe all partitions on the card. Make one ~7GB FAT32, ~500mb ext3 and if you want 32mb linux swap. To be safe wipe your phone and reflash cyanogen mod.
yea well, i dont know what is going on with it, but i have wiped, and rebooted, now and it is still blank after the android boot screen, and the sd card is in it now. i dont know what to say now.
i have the same issue
The problem is the Recovery IMG
Try install this recovery image: RA-dream-v1.2.3 Recovery Image
The make the partitions again from the recovery console
Jesus, man...
I suppose because of lingering paranoia from the days of filling my phone up daily, I've always made an Ext partition around a gig. I've never, ever, ever even filled half of it.
Then again, since I don't usually listen to music on my phone I also Have a nearly 7 gig fat 32 partition that I don't often fill. Honestly, it's probably because I keep losing the damned jack adapter and I haven't seen the earbuds I bought with the jack attached in months.
I have so many 3.5mm headphones around and still, those damned adapters elude me.
having a few issues in this area as well, all is partitioned as reccomended within the recovery console, (~7Gigs'ish fat32 and a 500MB part on ext3...) apps to SD is still blanked out... weird from my POV, as it worked fine until i updated to CyanogenMod 5.0.7 test 5..
Can anyone reccomend a more stable "2.1" based Cyan rom? or is the 5.*.* series the first of its kind to utilize 2.1? sorry for veering off-topic, but i feel my problem may be the newest releas of CM as it IS a test build...
Any words of wisdom would be greaaaaatly appreciated. not new to this stuff, but the apps2sd thing i never bothered with untill now (i do so mu h reformatting and build testing its becoming a pain to re-install all my apps... as i refuse to pay for the MyBackup app lol)

1 fried SD card - A2SD

First of all, I normally don't post new threads. I've been using this site for a long time, and have always found the answers I need by simply searching and reading. I have searched, and read a lot, but have not found answers that I believe will help my specific problem. So here goes, thank you.
I am running CyanogenMod-4.0.4. I had A2SD set up on a 16GB micro SD card, using the sdparted utility. Everything worked perfectly for about 2 weeks, then my phone suddenly froze up. Pulled the battery, but it would not boot past the "T-Mobile G1" screen. I removed the SD card and everything was fine. I tried to repartition the card using both Mac Disk Utility and Gparted, then tried to set up a new partition table, but I got a corrupted filesystem error each time. That's old news, I've wiped my phone and found a new card, so now I need to know if I can safely set up A2SD.
The card is a 16GB Sandisk micro SD card - class 2.
I've done some reading suggesting that I do not need a linux-swap partition. Can I do this with just a Fat32 and ext3/4 partitions? Or because the card is class 2, do I need the swap?
Thanks again.
Swap is for the OS, not applications on the sd card. The only reason I use swap is for Hero, I have yet to go back to a donut filled cupcake rom with it on.
A2SD is pretty safe for the card, it's swap that you take the risk of shortening the lifespan of the card.
I assume you have cyan's recovery image, you should try to partition the card with parted instead of a computer utility. I really don't think a2sd is the reason for the card failure.
Your old card should still be under warranty.

Swap is not related to apps2sd, they are completely separate entities. "because the card is class 2" swap probably isn't a good idea, since it will likely be slow.
Apps2sd isn't particularly taxing to the SD card, particularly with ext2, writes are most damaging to a flash device.
Awesome. Thanks for the quick reply guys. I think I'll go ahead and use the sdparted utility to set up a partition for my apps, but leave off the swap.
Thanks again.

Partition...problem?

So. I have Froyo, and Amon-ra 1.7.0
Downloaded NFS Shift (despite knowing it has problems with snapdragon)
and decided to install it. I don't use a lot of apps, but 100mb is more than I have.
So I decided to do apps 2 sd. First things first, partition the sd card.
Booted into recovery, partitioned sd card (1 gig to ext3, remainder to fat32)
And rebooted the phone. And now...pretty much everything on my sdcard is gone?
Was that supposed to happen? It's not that devestating, but I did have some stuff
on there that I would like to get back...
Gah.
This is normal when you repartition disk. Partition table was overwritten by new table you create in recovery.
Theoretically if you don't write any data on sdcard after the loss, you can plug the card to computer and recovery your old partition table and try to recovery files but if you write something, you can't do nothing.
But you can try it, google for "fat32 recovery" ..
Partitioning SD card erases everything that was on it.
Yup, that's normal. Partitioning anything in that way will wipe it all.
Alright, this is what I get for not researching I guess. And I haven't added anything to it, so I will try to recover later. Thanks guys. Just curious.

Can't Format SD Card

I lost my sd card data flashing a rom. Could not mount it even thru recovery. Got a card reader, but it won't format it.
Using Mini Partition Tool to troubleshoot. I am not at a point where it shows three partitions. The main 16gb unallocated, logical. The ext3 unformatted 500mb, primary (think I did that by mistake when trying to recover partition). And a 32mb unallocated, logical. All zero used memory.
I need to get back to one partition allocated, primary. Then I can get sd data back on it and reformat thru recovery.
Again using Mini Partition Wizard
Any help please!
OK,
I got it repartitioned as primary and formatted, bu sd card from pc now.
Hope phone recognizes it.
Will update, if I need further help.
Ken
If you want a good program to format your sd card, try SD Formatter.
Download and install that, plug in your sdcard into your sd card reader and format it.
Choose Full Erase On (if possible) and Resize On. It will format your sdcard to factory default and that means even the ext partition will be gone too.
Well, all transferred. Still won't mount. Says can't mount either of the dev/blocks mmcb1k0p1 and mmcb1k0.
Staus bar says sd card damaged.
?????
musashiken,
Thanks, typing while you posted. Based on my last post should I still do that?
Ken
Yeah I think you should try to reformat again with the program I suggested, as that will full format your sd card.
Once done, put your sd card back to the phone and create ext partition in recovery.
At work now but will be working on it.
Thanks
Ken
musashiken,
Thanks, appreciate all your help
That program worked, and I am back up and running
Ken
Glad it worked for you. My sd card kept giving me problems and I have to use this every few rom flashes.
I have a similar problem. I installed a new 32 gb SDHC card in a CDMA Hero running Cryogenmod. All was working well for about 10 days, then I got an error that no SD card was found. I had the original card and tried to get to the Clockwork recovery, no luck. Finally, through Rom manager, (flash alternate recovery to Ramon, then back to Clockwork, I was able to boot into recovery.
I still cannot format the new SDHC card, through Recovery, Windows 7, or the Panasonic program listed above. The Windows format option sees the card as a FAT 121mb card, so does the above program. Is this new card toast? It came with a lifetime warranty from Kingston, but I am mad that it did not make 2 weeks.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Craig
If sdformatter did not work it may be bad.
I always had good luck with it.
Did you have all options set per instructions?

[Q] Link2Sd Right partition combination and slow sd card

Hi guys
I'm looking forward to use Link2sd so I installed minitoll partition wizard and tried to create 2 partitions:
1 Primary 7 Gb FAT32
1 Primary 0.6 Gb Ext2
i could never complete the task and partition wizard kept saying the sd card was unformatted. I found on anther thread that for some phones Ext2 partition did not work and that a second Fat32 could solve the issue.
I went down that road and the sd formatting went fine creating 2 Fat32 partition.
The BIG problem is that the sd card (Kingston 8 Gb class4) is extremely slow, getting all my backuo data back into it took like 30 hours.
Is this normal ?
What is the proper partition combination for the X8 on order to use Link2sd ??
Such slow writing speed to the sdcard seems a pretty high price to pay...is it worth ???

I used the same software to create partition in my Sandisc 8GB class2 SD card. It took around 10 mins to create and format the card with 7.5GB FAT32 and 0.5GB Ext2. Both are primary.
I suggest you to check the Card and software by interchanging them. That is try with same software on a new computer with this card and again on your machine try a new or another card.
Another way that you can make the partition in CWM recovery.
Positively there is something wrong, the time you mentioned is too unusual.
Hi
Thanks a lot, when you are so close to the trees you can't see the forest.jaja
After several combinations I realized that the sd card port on the laptop was defective. I used an usb adapter and partioned with minitools, just as you said and worked...finally.
Cheers
