1 fried SD card - A2SD - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First of all, I normally don't post new threads. I've been using this site for a long time, and have always found the answers I need by simply searching and reading. I have searched, and read a lot, but have not found answers that I believe will help my specific problem. So here goes, thank you.
I am running CyanogenMod-4.0.4. I had A2SD set up on a 16GB micro SD card, using the sdparted utility. Everything worked perfectly for about 2 weeks, then my phone suddenly froze up. Pulled the battery, but it would not boot past the "T-Mobile G1" screen. I removed the SD card and everything was fine. I tried to repartition the card using both Mac Disk Utility and Gparted, then tried to set up a new partition table, but I got a corrupted filesystem error each time. That's old news, I've wiped my phone and found a new card, so now I need to know if I can safely set up A2SD.
The card is a 16GB Sandisk micro SD card - class 2.
I've done some reading suggesting that I do not need a linux-swap partition. Can I do this with just a Fat32 and ext3/4 partitions? Or because the card is class 2, do I need the swap?
Thanks again.

Swap is for the OS, not applications on the sd card. The only reason I use swap is for Hero, I have yet to go back to a donut filled cupcake rom with it on.
A2SD is pretty safe for the card, it's swap that you take the risk of shortening the lifespan of the card.
I assume you have cyan's recovery image, you should try to partition the card with parted instead of a computer utility. I really don't think a2sd is the reason for the card failure.

Your old card should still be under warranty.

Swap is not related to apps2sd, they are completely separate entities. "because the card is class 2" swap probably isn't a good idea, since it will likely be slow.
Apps2sd isn't particularly taxing to the SD card, particularly with ext2, writes are most damaging to a flash device.

Awesome. Thanks for the quick reply guys. I think I'll go ahead and use the sdparted utility to set up a partition for my apps, but leave off the swap.
Thanks again.

still sd card issues

i can load a hero rom on my g1 and flash it, but the phone says the sd card has been removed after the rom loads. also card reader says the sd card is write protected and when i go to settings it gives me greyed out area in the mount and available space areas. tried alot of things on the forum but none have worked so far. any ideas or is the card dead.
Boot to recovery, go to console (you have cyan1.4?) and issue this command:
Code:
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0 print
Post what it says.
Your card reader, what kind is it and what OS are you using. You aren't using an SD adapter with a write protect switch on it are you?
you may need to reformat your sd card and repartition it. dont use your card reader just mount if from the phone. you DO have a mini usb right? if not... you may have to reformat it on you phone. but all of your apps will be gone. if you dont have one, go out and buy one. they shouldnt cost more than...5 bucks.
1 512b 3420mb 3420mb primary fat32
2 3420mb 3932mb 512mb primary ext3
3 3932mb 3964 32.0mb primary linux-swap (v1)
4 3965mb 3973mb 8225kb primary linux-swap(v1)
whoa why do you have 2 linux swaps? you only need one....
thanks for all the help, what do i do now.some detailed instructions would be very good.
follow this tutorial on how to partition your sd card. your gonna have to reformat it to fat32 before. scroll down to the part where it says time to partition your sd card.
http://forums.t-mobile.com/tmbl/boa...roidDev&message.id=7674&query.id=130222#M7674
also when loading a hero rom it needs a clear ext2/3 to boot properly.
disk is write protected thats what i get when i put it in a card reader and try reformatting

Create New Swap...?

How would I upgrade my linux Swap to say 96mb without erasing SD card?
I know there is a way I saw the thread before but now I can't find it.
Thanks
Nick
Also is there a way to upgrade to ext3 or 4 without deleteing content on sd card?
If there is not a way to do this part how would I take apps off sd card and then push them back onto sd card so they run as if installed once again?
Considering I have to re format sd card in order to upgrade to ext3 or 4.
I'm doing my friends sd card for him and he doesnt want to re install apps and plus its knowledge I would like to know
Thanks,
Nick
You would use the resize command in parted to change the swap size. Also, if you use RA's 1.3.2 recovery, you can easily upgrade to ext4 without losing anything
none of the above should cause dataloss as long as its done right

If you can, look in to loading an Ubuntu or Gparted live CD. It's makes everything soooo much easier than using parted, and it will allow you to do everything you asked about.
Is moving to 96 a larger or smaller partition than what you have now? And if it is larger, do you have the space to resize it w/o disturbing the other partitions?

I am at 32mb on this specific sd card now. I would like to change it to 64mb and if it runs smoothly change it to 96mb and see how that goes.
-I would prefer to do everything on the phone directly and not on computer.
where could I find these commands in order to change my swappyness?
-I have 2gb ext2 and the rest fat32 on an 8gb card. 32 mb is swap.
-I want to upgrade ext2 to ext4 and then swap from 32mb to 64 mb.
-I want to do all of this without using computer and only parted.
-Also if it happens to be easier to reformat and do it the original way through parted than fine but then where could I find the commands to push apps from root of sd card to the apps2sd area that cyan pulls them from so I dont have to reinstall all apps. I have over 260 apps on this card that are installed and it would be a pain to install agian.
Thanks,
Nick

Big problems with CyanogenMod-4.2.11.1 and APPS2SD

Hi
I have some big problems when I use an EXT2, EXT3 ore EXT4 partition on my SD card.
I want to use APPS2SD to save memory space, but as soon as I make an EXT partition on my SD card, my phone always hangs all the time in the startup.
I get the Android logo, and that the screen goes black with background light, and hangs like that fore 30min with no change.
But if I eject my SD card and start up without it, it's no problem, but now all my programs are in the SD card so they are missing.
What I've done:
I had CyanogenMod-4.2.05.
Made an EXT3 partiotion on my SD card.
Made an linux-swap 31mb partiotion
Updatet to CyanogenMod-4.2.11.1 and than it started up, added my progs to the SD.
Had 1 reboot with no problem, tried to update some programs, than it hang up on the update, woudnt update.
So I had an reboot, that when it started up I got a lot of error messages on the updates.
Tried an new update, and now it wont start up with the SD inserted.
I tried ext partition on my erlier CyanogenMod but same problem than also...
What could my problem be?
Have an 8gb class 4 micro SD card
when I now trie to install programs I get an error message "Insuffcient storage availble"
Clearly this is a problem with your sdcard. Try complete re-format first, followed by complete wipe and re-flash. If that doesn't help then you need a new sdcard.
Good luck.
In what order are your partitions? It sounds like you no longer have the FAT32 as mmcblk0p1? Make sure the first partition is the FAT32, the second is EXT, and the third your swap.
Hi
Could be my card, it's an ebay card so, but works fine with music...
I use an guide fore formating my card, and I make the fat32 first, than ext and so the swap.
Now I tried to make an partition with ubuntu, and without the swap, but dosent seem to help, black screen after the adroid logo....
I guess I give up and its my card...
When i use the Print comand in parted i get the fat32 up first...
Print
number start end size type file system fla
gs
1 0 7500 7500mb primary fat32 lba
2 7500 8000 500mb primary ext2
3 8000 8032 32mb primary linux-swap(v1)
Use AmonRa's recovery? It will paritition the card for you the right way with whatever size partitions you specify.
Ok so my partition could be the problem?
ill try the AmonRa's recovery than, and if not I guess its not ment to be apps2sd on my phone...
Well, I wouldn't say that apps2sd is not ment for your phone since so many of us are using this hack (including myself) however this may be a tedious process of eliminating possible causes. I would not rule out the possibility of damaged SD card. It has happened before to many people. Re-format and re-partition your existing card first. Wipe everything off your phone, re-flash the rom of your choice (following the instructions) and see if it works. If it doesn't work - then I would look into getting a different SD card. I just received a tweet that compUSA has class 6 8GbB card with adapter for $30. I also saw something in "Dream accessories" forum in the "Promotions" thread, I believe 8GB card for $15 from Amazon. Cards are a lot cheaper then new phone, you should try that out. Good luck.
Ok.
I've now installed the AmonRa's recovery 1.5.2
Partition the card with AmonRa's recovery
Wiped data/factory
Shud I wipe dalvik-cache, battry status, and rotate settings also?
Wipe dalvik-cache, others should not matter for what you're trying to accomplish.
Ok thx.
I'll try that, if it doesnt work now, I'll buy an new sd card
So AmonRa's recovery didnt help, so I guess it's my sd card than.
Will buy an new one and test with that.
So fore now on it's low on space
Maby this time I will remember to take an backup when I have y phone the way I like, getting tierd of setting up my phone all the time

Need help with class 10 32GB MicroSD

So I got myself a class 10 MicroSD from newegg from the company called Patriot (reviews for all their products say its a good company)
NewEgg page with item
In any case I figured 99$ isnt too bad. So I got the memory card today and sure enough computer has no issues reading it.Speeds are great and no bad reads or writes
So Im trying to set it up with ext3 etc and nothing seems to be working. So in any case I reformatted everything to fat32 on my PC and the phone isn't even detecting the memory card.
I was under the impression 32GB microsd should be ok. I hope this isnt a compatibility issue. Anyone else have thoughts in this?
Tried partition magic, default disk management application on xp also tried MiniTool Partition Wizard and no luck. At this point I just want the phone to detect the memory card to I can format it from the phone and then do the ext3 either from CW or Amon
Anyone? Is changing the drive letter on a computer going to change anything?
I heard that FAT32 does not support 32GB partition very well.. also some card readers have problem with reading a 32GB shdc card.
Try to make a 10GB Fat32 partition on your SD card and leave remaining space free, see if your phone can use it.

Thanks ill give it a try but no point in a 32gig card if cant use most of it on the phone. Dont need most of the card as ext3 lol
Working fine here. I used Acronis True Image to clone the card the first go around, but didn't like how it setup the card. Then used Acronis Disk Director to reconfigure a 31gb FAT & 1gb ext3. You can use Amon_RA Recovery to setup the card too. I did do that too, but I already have Disk Director to give me the gui view of what's going on.
Cannot get EXT3 partition to work on Desire
I'm also having issues getting the ext3 partition of the Kingston 32GB micro sdhc card to work with my desire.
I used GParted to create a large fat32 partition and also created a 1GB ext3 partition, but when i reboot the handset i get an error meesage on the desire telling me that the sd card is damaged and that i need to format. When i go back into GParted the FAT32 partition looks healthy but ext3 partition comes up as unallocated.
This method has worked fine with an 2 and 8GB micro sd but it seems to have issues when using the 32GB.
I've also tried using rom manager to create a 512MB ext3 partition but that just causes the phone to sit on on the boot up screen.
If anyone is experiencing the same/similar problem, please let me know how you tackled it.
Try to use Amon_RA's recovery and reformat your SD card with it.
Gparted seems to be the best tool to use.
Hi,
Same problem with a Patriot MicroSD 32GB Class10.
Attempt to partition MicroSD with :
-Gparted
-Minitool Partition Wizard Home
-CWM (HD2)
Partitions are always destroyed or strange modified so Android can't read FAT32 partition.
No problems with a Sandisk 32GB Class 2.
Ok i worked out what this issue was.
Unfortunantly i've purchased a counterfeit Kingston MicroSD.
Kingston confirmed that it was a fake after i send them pics so that explains everything.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
The reviews seem mixed on the Patriot

[Q] Link2Sd Right partition combination and slow sd card

Hi guys
I'm looking forward to use Link2sd so I installed minitoll partition wizard and tried to create 2 partitions:
1 Primary 7 Gb FAT32
1 Primary 0.6 Gb Ext2
i could never complete the task and partition wizard kept saying the sd card was unformatted. I found on anther thread that for some phones Ext2 partition did not work and that a second Fat32 could solve the issue.
I went down that road and the sd formatting went fine creating 2 Fat32 partition.
The BIG problem is that the sd card (Kingston 8 Gb class4) is extremely slow, getting all my backuo data back into it took like 30 hours.
Is this normal ?
What is the proper partition combination for the X8 on order to use Link2sd ??
Such slow writing speed to the sdcard seems a pretty high price to pay...is it worth ???

I used the same software to create partition in my Sandisc 8GB class2 SD card. It took around 10 mins to create and format the card with 7.5GB FAT32 and 0.5GB Ext2. Both are primary.
I suggest you to check the Card and software by interchanging them. That is try with same software on a new computer with this card and again on your machine try a new or another card.
Another way that you can make the partition in CWM recovery.
Positively there is something wrong, the time you mentioned is too unusual.
Hi
Thanks a lot, when you are so close to the trees you can't see the forest.jaja
After several combinations I realized that the sd card port on the laptop was defective. I used an usb adapter and partioned with minitools, just as you said and worked...finally.
Cheers
