Official network ROM related to network performance? - Touch HD Windows Mobile ROM Development

Hi all
Ive asked this in the orange thread and also searched for this, but cant seem to get a clear yes/no answer, hope someone can help.
I, for example, am on Orange, and use an Orange SIM.
The question is this, and a noobish one I quess: Being on Orange -- does having the official Orange Rom installed on my phone ofer me any advantages in terms of gprs/edge/ internet browsing speed? In other words, will my internet connection be faster if i have the official rom from Orange, or is this quite irrelevant, compared to (the much prefered) Roms on here? Is the official network Rom somehow "optimized" so that the internet speed is improved on a phone that runs on the same network? Orange Rom on Orange network, in this case?
Hope I make myself clear...Any clarification much appreciated! Thanks for everything...again!

Official carrier ROMs has almost got nothing to do in improving your signal strength or connection speeds. If you are concerned about that, you can different radio ROMs. But on the safe side, I suggest that if you are not having any problems, don't change anything.
Regardless of what ROM you use here, as long as you are not changing your radio. You wont have any significant change with your network connection. Fyi, as far as I know, there are 2 ROMs to use to flash a specific part in our phones. The PDA (Operating System) and radio (Phone).

Well explained.
@ skipper78 - If your looking to improve your signal, gps then your options would be to use apps like QuickGPS & HTC GPSTool or to update your radio.
Your network connection would not be altered changing to a cooked rom

Thanks a lot guys, that clarifies it once and for all -- i dont have to worry about using the undesirable orange ROM.
I am using Duttys V4.3 final, radio 1.14.25.24. Do you think this radio is one of the better options for me?
I like the rom very much -- and by the way my connection speed is not by any means "slow"--but obviously-- the faster the better.
And forgot to mention, its a blackstone.
Thanks again for the quick and clear replies!

We obviously assumed it was blackstone as your rom wouldn't have worked on another device and this is the HD forum
You are currently using the latest official radio, though signal strength also depends on location. If you want to try a non-official radio like 1.16 which I am using you would need to security unlock your device first and then download it from here.
As for which radio is best for you, you have 2 options:
1. Read each radio thread and see what results others have had in your location
2. Try each radio (only is 3-4 official ones and 3-4 un-offical, though I would only try 1.16 as it is the better of the 4)

Yes, after reading it i thought it was a bit pointless adding that
But hey many thanks for the explanations and links. Im in south america at the moment so im not really using data connection much, way to expensive -- as soon as im back in the uk i will experiment with a few different radios. How come you prefer the 1.16 if you dont mind me asking? Do you find it gives you faster connection speed?
Cheers!

I wrote a reciew on the 1.16 thread. Bsically it had a better GPS fix, better signal stength & slight improvement on battery
I'm closing this thread as everything appears to have been answered.

The link doesnt work for me faria. I just went to the ftp site and manually downloaded the rom.
I cant access the FTP site. It keeps asking me my usnername or something so I figure the xda login name right, but it doesnt work. Can someone upload it somewhere thanks
Thanks
Download works fine for me. Just put xda in for the password. I'll check it out and see if its a reasonable alternative for the 2.19.11 rom and my Cingular service!

Thanks, I finally was able to download it. One question before I upgrade. Maybe Faria can give his input. I am a T-mobile user currently on the 2.19.11 radio rom. This seems to be the best one overall for me since it allows both data and voice calls at the same time, there are no missed calls. But reception/signal is somewhat not good. Does this new radio give better reception for T-Mobile as well as allowing both data and voice?
Thanks
Great radio rom but isn't 2.69.11 newer then 2.40.11?
Well, right, it is newer most likely. The thing is, newer isn't necessarily better for each person's circumstance. Radios are tuned for particular providers in particular places and are usually matched with particular roms. However, in my case for example, with Cingular US service, and WM6 roms, my experience and that of many others is that the 2.19.11 T-mobile UK rom is the best. The others were inconsistent in alerting me to incoming calls and pending voicemails. However the data and sound was better with the newer radios. For me not missing calls was most important, so I stick with the older rom. But, this is a new one for me, and hope springs eternal, so I'll probably give it a try and see if I can have the best of both worlds like those T-Mobile guys.
Regards,

From what I understand, 2.69.11 is the latest released German Radio rom, but 2.40.11 is a US released rom. So this may work better for US customers. I hope we can use 2.40.11 with WM6!

in the midwest US of A baby.. smoke you!
Just installed it! I will post back my results.
Since I finally experienced the awful delay in SMS receiving on the 2.69 radio ROM (after several weeks of success, I missed 4 important text messages in an hour's timeframe), I'm game for this. Downloading now...
So far my signal seems to be much better than 2.19 radio. but only time will tell.

I too am now noticing a delay\lack of SMS\Voicemail Msg after WEEKS of 2.69 working like a charm. I thought I was one of the lucking ones but now I am not so sure. Who knows how long this has been happening. Anyway, downloaded and installing right now.
Working great on WM2005 .
thanx Faria .
by the way...this is a US radio.....sorry i cant name the carrier at the moment.
I've installed this on my Cingular 8125 on the Cingular network last night. I received a test sms and another SMS from a friend in a timely manner. All test calls I've put through have worked so far. I was even downloading a webpage with Opera and phoned in and the call came through. So far so good... Tomorrow (Monday) will be the real test when I'm back to work, but I'll try to give it a workout today.
thanks for the info so far and please continue to post information on this rom and its working with wm6
P.S.-Sorry for not being able to also post information but in what i do missing a call/calls or missing a sms/sms' would cost me alot of $$$$$...(so thanks for being guinea pigs...poor pigs lol)
First timer dumb question
Hi. I am running Nottoosmart's system with radio 2.19. Things have been pretty stable, but there are times when I've had to reboot in order to reacquire the phone carrier after sleep (e.g. softreset). Also, subjectively I believe I have some signal problems when in places where there is already a weak signal.
So, bottom, line, I am considering trying this radio.
But, I have never flashed a radio before and I'd like to avoid having this become a "federal project." So a few questions:
1. I can flash the radio back and forth (e.g. ->2.40, ->2.19) *without* touching the OS (e.g. wm6 rom/ram), is that correct?
2. There are several executables in the zip: EnterBootloader.exe, romupdateutility.exe, RUUGetInfo.exe; I realize there are tutorials ad infinitum posted here, but can someone help me save some time by letting me know how to install the radio, do I just run "romupdateutility" over activesync, or is there more to do?
Please don't flame. I am an engineer, just not experienced in burning radios to MDA's. I assume the radio goes into a portion of rom that is dedicated to the phone processor of the OMAP chip?

Hello,
1) You can flash the Radio rom without messing with the OS. All of your settings and files will not be affected. It does not require a hard reset.
2) Just run the romupdateutility.exe. It works the same when you flash a new os rom, it just takes a fraction of the time due to the fact you are only flashing the radio. I just connect via USB and let activesync do its thing then run romupdateutility.exe, the program will kill activesync itself.
I hope this helps.

Tilt Signal is low? 1to2 bars only?

is there any way i can make my tilt phone to get a better stronger Signal Strength? i think i heard something about radios? This is all i want and need.
It's possible that a radio can help. Searching the forum for various reports on the different radios is recommended.
You may want to consider that your bars will always fluctuate but the important thing is that you have service. So if I have service in an area and have 2 bars, I will most likely not realize a difference if I had 4. Try looking in teh Kaiser forum under different radios and read what each one does. Even though they have a few for Kaiser, you should not use them unless you know which rom you have.
So how do i install this radio rom? is there a cab version
There is a whole guide on the wiki that you should check out. Once you have Hard SPL installed and your phone unlocked, it is a peice of cake.
ahhh this sound too complicated

NOOB question on upgrading radios?

I was looking at the stickies and it showed all different types of radios. Some say WWE and others say UK. Now I was looking at people's signatures and some have the UK with the ROM I use. Does that mean it only works in the UK? I live in Hawaii and yes we are part of the U.S. as the 50th State and no we do not live in grass shacks and yes we have electricity and Internet and no I'm not Hawaiian and yes i get asked these questions all the time. anyways I have Dutty's WM6.1 5.2.19199 ROM and I was thinking of going with 1.64.08.21 because of the review. I couldn't find on Dutty's 5.2.19199 thread which radios are compatible. I don't have any problems with sound but I wanted to see if it will help with my signal.

You can flash just about any radio for Win 6.1 except 1, check the first 2 post of Dutty's post where he posted the rom and it should give you all the information you need.
just make sure u flash a 6.1 compatible radio...as for signal u just have to try to see which one is best for ur location or ask if theres any other ppl in ur area
1.64.08.21 is a good radio and will work just about anywhere in the world. The reason so many people have different radios is because in different places in the world will get different results from radio to radio. I suggest you experiment with different radios and see which ones give you better battery life and signal and data and GPS lock. I personally like the Niki radio 1.58.16.27.
Thanks guys. I had a hard time figuring what Radio meant. I first i thought it was for listening to songs.
what would be good is a master list of the geographical areas and the Radio versions that people tried in that area. then have it show the signal strength results. that way noobies and people moving to new locations can just pick instead of trying over 10+ different versions. hmm, maybe that's too much work.

Yeah. That would be nice but, yes, way to much work. You won't find a huge difference between most radios. The most common radios used are the best. I think you're thinking a little too much in to it. My radio is my favorite. I use a radio for a day and compare to the day before with the last radio and then try the next. I've gone through 10-12 radios and most have very little difference. Just make sure you use one that is compatable with wm6.1 which is what I think you have.
That I will have to disagree with... I have not been able to find a WM6.1 radio that will send MMS correctly in my area yet!!!
I am in South Florida, West Palm Beach to be exact. I have HSPDA and still no WM6.1 radio works with MMS here. I send an MMS and it takes over 3 hours to get to the recipient.....
Therefore, I am stuck with WM6.0 as of right now....

It's not the radio that's causing your MMS problems. It's the ROM. Or more accurately, your MMS client. The MMS client sends and receives your MMS. You can find out what MMS software you have by going into messages then MMS. Press menu, then go to "MMS Options." Under 'about' you'll find the version number and make. It's probably arcsoft. If you have version 5, your problem may then lie in network or MMS settings. Some wm6.1 ROMS do not have a good MMS program. Dutty's last few releases have had a great one. I suggest you try Dutty's latest. Make sure you use the connection setup to automatically set-up your MMS and data settings.

I am trying Dutty's Latest rom 6.1 based on the ATT 19209 version. There is still a delay .
I didn't think it was the radio as I am able to make calls, and send regular text messages just have a long delay receiving and sending MMS ????

This is a bit more complicated AT$T Stock ROMs requires Special AT$T Radios. They are listed as such in the Radio Information Thread.

That and you'll need Hard-SPL to flash a non at&t radio and rom. Search the forums for it and do a lot of researching before your first flash. A lot of researching. Flashing is very easy but you'll run into problems and have many questions if you don't research.
Read the Wiki completely and once you get near the bottom of the wiki you'll find "Available Extracted Radio Upgrade Only " which will contain many of the available radios. Find one that's at&t and download it.
Here is the Kaiser Wiki.

ATT Tilt- possible radio problems, total noob needs help

Hi guys, I really did search first, I promise. I have been having connectivity issues (not making calls, lost data connections, etc...) since I updated to the ATT Official Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM (3.57.502.2 WWE) with radio version 1.65.21.18. I am trying to determine if I need to upgrade my radio version. I found the thread with all the radio versions for my phone but don't know anything about them. I did get that I should try different ones until I find one that works for me. So do I need to install the HardSPL on my phone (or did the Official ATT rom upgrade do that already)? From there do I run that RUU.exe file on the desktop (or what)? It would be great if someone could put this in super simple terms for me.
Thanks in advance,
-Max
one word for your info, "WIKI"
I did look over the wiki for some time, here is my hang up. Jockyw2001 posted in an SPL thread that "SPL3.56 is part of the latest AT&T Rom which is dated June 6. 2008" So since I did the official ATT upgrade and my ROM date is 07/17/08, does that mean that I already have SPL 3.56 on my device? I can not find a post about how to determine what SPL version (if any) is installed on my device. If SPL is already installed, is there any danger in installing an older version of SPL or reinstalling one?
Thanks again

So you are saying that the stock rom and stock radio are not working correctly, no cooked roms or other carrier radios?
Did the problems start right after you updated?
Oh and your problem seems similar to the one in this thread here, well least is sounds similar to me anyways...

Yup, stock radio and rom as suggested by ATT, whom their customer service now claims they do not support WM6.1. I've never used a cooked rom and really only come here for device information and applications. I did have problems before I upgraded the rom but they have much worse since. The thread you posted is similar but they mostly talk about an "H" connection. I am in the DC metro area (USA) and get 3G all the time now, I wonder if that is part of the problem, I never get an EDGE network signal anymore.
Well... I just found THIS buried over on the ATT support forums
Clp1970 01-21-2009 10:33:16 AM
I guess we just got 3G network here. I haven't been able to make/receive calls for 5 days now. Tech support supposedly looking into issue. My phone switches bewteen 3G and EDGE constantly. Anyone else having this issue? What was the resolution? I don't want a refurbished Tilt if they can't come to a resolution (why would I want the same darn phone if it doesn't work well with 3G as advertised?) I have already drove 20 minutes to the nearest store for a new SIM card..which did no good. There isn't anyway of turning off 3G network unless I install software I have seen mentioned on this forum and well, I don't know about that...I paid for this phone to do what it said, and it isn't.

Common problem that can be either due to problems with the rollout or that the local towers cannot handle 3G as effectively or at a greater distance as the same tower could for Edge. These are some related threads and posts but there are a lot more. As noted in these posts if there is a local AT&T store run by AT&T then you might pop in and confirm some of the problems with them.

The tendency is to blame the phone but the reality is often different and that includes from customer support who offered to swap my phone several times but this obviously would not work because it affected many other users as well differing phone manufacturers and models.

Timing of it is close enough to make me wonder, but I had been using HSDPA.. But I have been getting the same problems you are talking about when the phone is set to 3g as well. The other thing that is starting to make me think its something ATT did to their network is that the OP from the thread that I linked on here lives 20 mins west of my location, and I am 15-20 mins north of DC... I may go to one of the local att stores and see what they have to say (tho that means for me that I get to flash my phone back to the stock rom )

[Q] Htc touch Diamond 3G/HSDPA

Hello
I find a problem.. I wanted to flash my shipped rom with some 6.5 rom. I unlocked spl a flashed newer radio and something went wrong. Everything seems to be ok but 3G networks/HSDPA doesnt. I have 3G icon, network setting is ok but speed is so slow. (like GPRS).
Does someone know where is a problem? i tried different roms, radios and spl a so much combinations but nothing ..
please help me and i would like to epologize for my bad english thank you!
Spirit303
my rom is 1.93 WWE shipped, spl 1.4 security unlocked, radio 1.00.25.5
It`s not advised to flash a new radio on your headset. Not to mention a new OS!
Try getting the las radio version on this forum.I did not encounter this issue , but try to F around the Settings a bit and see how it turns out.
what did you mean by unlocking the spl.......? did you flash it already with the hardspl....? well, i'm also a complete noob if compared to anyone around here;;just got myself a new Htc Diamond a couple of days ago.....but i've read the forum enough to realise that flashing a hard spl is the first thing to do if you're planning to F*** around with rom or radio flashing or anything else on ur diamond......sorry if it might sound like teaching you to suck eggs....and btw, i also faced the issues you've mentioned....3g internet slowdown..:yup, the icon is indicating H,i.e HSDPA yet the speed is soo rotten like the taste of those horrible days of GPRS.
and i solved it by flashing the latest radio available...cant really remember the version, but i'm sure you'll find it if you read the stickies....
currently running Donsalary's Sense 2.5 Lite Rom and pretty satisfied with the speed of connection and my device......hopefully you'll find the workaround for your issues
