Hello everyone! Last night I spent about 3 hours installing the JACXHERO-v2.6.6 rom onto my Tmobile G1 using a method from unlockr.com (http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/22/how...g-best-method/). Unfortunately, it runs extremely slow right now.
For example, when i press home after sending a text message it goes to the HTC screen and simply sits there for about 30 seconds. At first I thought this was due to the weather widget updating but even when I took it off it still does this. Another thing is that it will sometimes take 10 seconds to switch screens when i slide my finger.
I know I am still new to this and realize there are some veterans on this forum that have a lot more experience with this. Can anyone please suggest to me what to do?
The bottom line is, all i want to do is run a stable and lag free (or fast) Rom.
Thanks guys!
i am taking a few liberties...
from the line, that you want a stable and fast rom, i assume you would like another rom besides hero. so download the latest stable rom off of cyanogen's thread.
after you download it and put it on your sdcard go into recovery then to the recovery console and type
Code:
mke2fs -j /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
that will format your ext3 partition.
now type in the recovery console
Code:
reboot recovery
once the phone boots up into recovery again, wipe the phone then flash the rom, then reboot when it is finished.
alright will do but i was wondering if you could give me a step by step instruction on how to do all this (like i said im very new to this sort of thing) =/ im sorrry

i'm no rocket surgeon but here goes
download rom
place on root (no folders) of sdcard
power down phone
boot into recovery with home and power
scroll down to recovery console
enter command above to format ext3.
then type reboot recovery to boot back into recovery
select data wipe/factory reset
press home to confirm
now select flash any .zip (assuming you have cyanogen's 1.4 recovery image, if not, name rom to update in windows or update.zip for mac/linux prior to putting on phone, then select apply update.zip sdcard instead of any .zip)
hit home after selecting your rom (again 1.4 recovery)
when it is done flashing select reboot
happiness is yours.
yes you must wipe the phone and your ext3 partition since you are coming from hero to AOSP (cupcake/donut) (opposite applies as well).

i still have jac 1.4 on my computer. i thought about flashing it once just to see how HUGE the improvement in hero roms has gotten

So are you saying Cyanogen's "experimental" builds aren't fast? If you were following the Hero scene closely you would know that every Hero build is "experimental," some just happen to be faster than others.
I recommend flashing one of the new ROMs such as Hero2 1.5.1, Modaco 2.2 (requires some tweaking to get flying), JACHEROSki 1.7r2(older but more stable/fast), or Drizzy's 1.4r1
NOTE: this is just my OPIONION
Cyanogens, is based on doughnut, so it looks the same as cupcake etc.. with custom enhancements (personally i think its fantastic)
The hero roms (in my experiance) its a case of reading the threads and trying a few to see what runs / works best for you
thanks a lot guys! it really helped! i have one quick question though
a lot of you have been recommending hero2 1.5.1 rom and i just watched a video on youtube for it where the guy was explaining how fast it was lol (and from the looks of it his seemed to have no lag when scrolling from left to right a bunch of times even with widgets)
my question is: is it really much faster and more stable? there are so many times where i'll be in my messages or something and i press the home key and theres a loading screen for like 30 seconds...i used the unlockr.com's method to partition my sd card to ext3 and what not
if i download and install the new hero rom, what are some suggestions on how to make it run faster?
people keep mentioning 96 mb partition or something like that and i have no idea what there talking about or how to do it
also, just in case i want to go back to the original os that came with the phone, how do i do it?
try moving the cache that is the first thing to do with hero there is a lot of maintence that go along with hero

Hello All.
I have spent a lot of time reading and am quite confused by all the different ROMs out there.
I live in the US, have T-mobile and need Exchange support and Tehtering. What is the best ROM for me in your opinion.
I am especially interested in ROMs where an easy-to-follow tutorial is available as this is my first G1 mod (but I did mod my Dash quite a few times).
Thanks,
Richard
Cyanogen's builds are the bees knees. Exchange support built into latest releases.
I think you have to download wifitether on the experimental build at the moment.
Can you name a specific build? also, can I get the tethering working in non-experimental roms?
Thanks
yeah. he recently released 3.9.5 which is very nice, you should be able to get the tethering working
My research shows that that is still experimental and has a possibility of bricking a phone. Any news on that? I am more interested in an already-stable release
Richard
Then just go get his stable release. It's in the dev forum also. It's 3.6.8.1 and btw I'm a total noob who has flashed every single experimental release of the cyan builds and flashed haykuro's spl so if I haven't bricked my phone yet I'm sure you will be perfectly fine just flashing that rom.

You don't have to worry about bricking your phone. His rom's don't require the brick SPL.
anyone have a good link to a walkthru on how to go thru the whole process?
Thanks
Everything you will need to root you can find here: XDA ***Informative Threads***
I can follow the root tutorials.
What is the prescribed step-by-step after that? I am hoping to go to the stable version mentioned here or another ROM that supports exchange. There is so much conflicting information on the threads that says to do this or that for this or that and its hard to follow with all the acronyms and such. Any help is appreciated,
Richard
well yo should just get the latest cyanogen image.
i have been flashing all his roms since day 1 and i have never had 1 issue.
for right now ignore any other roms (such as the hero mods from jachero or drizzy) because they are very unstable and slow. since its your first cooked rom your best bet is to flash to cyanogens 3.9.5 and your set. you dont need anything set up except root and your ext2/ext3 partition. no scripts necessary or additional apps to keep your apps to the sd card.
hope this helps.
boot.

^^ That is a great tutorial. ^^
1.4 pimped out recovery image, is truly pimped out. Backing up an image of your phones software to your sdcard only takes a few button presses, same with restoring it. Has other very useful features as well.
Danger SPL is really only needed for certain Hero builds, a partitioned card is good if you need Apps2SD.
In your case: Root it, install 1.4 recovery, then go with Cyanogen 3.6.8.1, install wifiTether.
Btw. If you plan on using wifiTether often, carry a charger or usb cable. It eats your battery quickly.
Enjoy!
Quite a bit of mis-information here.
The poster wants EXCHANGE support. Cyan's rom's do not have true exchange support.
What you need is either a Hero or Rogers ROM. The most stable, fastest, best ROM I've used so far is Soulife Rogers. There is a version that does not require the new SPL if you wish to not upgrade that. You can install WiFi Tether on any rooted phone with any ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523608 - Soulife Rogers
You'll want to root your phone first, then run the latest cyan recovery (1.4) - partition your SD card for fat32, ext2, linux-swap. Then run "upgrade_fs" to upgrade to ext3... install the soulife rom. Then install swapper from the market and select "linux partition" from the menu.
This is a pretty vague how-to, if you need more help feel free to ask.
This is the setup that I currently run. I get no force-closes, no lags, no freeze ups, everything is lightning fast plus FULL exchange (contacts/calendar/email) and even the HTC Dialer. Soulife's ROM is probably the best ROM available at this point.

I second this. With HK's SPL it gives you about 80 mb of free internal memory. Plus its super fast.
I havent tried Cyan's roms yet, mainly bc I dont feel like having to partition SD Card, then run a swapper on the thing. I want my phone just to work by itself, not with the addition of all these extra processes.
This is in no way a dig at Cyan, he's a great developer with (obviously) great stuff. But if you just want an Update.zip that you throw on your SD Card and update with amazing results I recommend Ion.

Egad, I forgot about the calendar and contacts. I was just thinking of the mail application.
Good catch.
Does ION have FULL exchange support? If it's the Rogers ION port than it should.
Also, swapper isn't required. It's silly not to use it though as it speeds up the phone.

quick note, in Cyan's ROMs you do not need to partition your SD card. if your card is not partitioned, it will not use the features and still runs smooth and fast. OK so maybe it won't be quite as fast as when using a swap, but it's definately fine without it.
Back on topic, i too would generally recomend Cyan's ROMs, but sadly no exchange, try a Roger's ROM, either by Soul-life or TheDude.
to install, if you have already rooted your phone and installed a custom ROM, simply download the ROM, rename it to update.zip, place it on the root of your SD card. Reboot phone holding HOME and POWER. i recomend a wipe if you're switching ROMs, so press ALT+W to wipe, then press ALT+S to apply the update. when it's done, press HOME+BACK to reboot your phone. It will take a little longer to boot after a flash, that's normal so don't panic.
hope that helps

If you are running Cyan's 1.4 recovery, there is no need to rename to update.zip anymore.

ok - i have a G1 ... fully functional etc
anyway - i started looking into putting SenseUI on it - and then about 15mins ago came across the cyanogen thread and became very intrigured....
i have a couple questions
1. with the latest release of the ROM, is the phone fully functional?? - no restrictions etc? tmo doesnt mind or restrict you etc? - i still want all features working
2. is there a step by step on installing the rom? - i looked around a bit but found multiple conflicting instructions/recommendations -
3. WORST case scenario, can i always go right back to where im at now? - official tmo/google release, fully functional, normal g1? - or am i stuck
my biggest concern is ruining the phone - im just getting in to G1 editing etc - ive always been too nervous because its my main phone and only phone - but i used to do all kinds of crazy things with my old blackberry - beta releases from overseas etc etc - just havent gotten the balls to mess with my g1
but ill be honest, i hate the iphone (not sure why) - but im getting kind of fed up with the G1 - i love it, dont get me wrong - but the add-ons/functions i read in cyans rom intrigured me a lot
so with all this being said - please answer my questions listed above
i dont care so much about the files/apps - i can always re-download the apps i use etc... and the pics/vids i can back up to my pc
thanks in advance!!!!
the current stable release of cyanogen's rom in 4.0.1 and it is very stable and much faster than stock cupcake. the only thing missing as far as i can tell is the myfaves app. but i do not care bc i can update that online. everything in market works. plus many extras from donut.
are you rooted? if not, go to the market.
search for recovery flasher.
download it.
then go to cyanogen's thread and download 4.0.1.
put it on the root of your sdcard (upmost folder).
use the recovery flasher app to apply cyanogen's recovery image 1.4 on your phone.
power off your phone.
hold home and power to boot into recovery.
it should have a green android with text in front of it.
go to flash any .zip.
select the 4.0.1 file you put on your sdcard from above.
hit home to apply it.
after it finishes and tells you to reboot the phone then select reboot phone on the menu.
let the phone boot up.
may take 5 to 10 minutes.
then look into partitioning your sdcard for apps2sd and a linux-swap partition if you want those options.
yes you can easily revert the phone to stock rom like you never rooted it.
when you boot the phone up the first time, if you get a lot of force closes then boot into recovery.
go to the recovery console
hit enter
type fix_permissions
then type reboot
if that does not work then you will have to wipe the phone from the recovery menu and re-flash the rom
any other questions
trying it now - (crosses fingers)
its been on the NEW adroid splash screen ( the one with the android on a skateboard) for a while now... it stops highlighting once in a while and flashes off - then starts again... its been about 7-8mins i think..... is this normal?
got it!
thanks!!!
your welcome. did you have root or did you use the recovery flasher app? because if you used the recovery flasher app there is a quick question i have
i didnt have root at all prior to me trying this tonight
something i would try. power your phone down. hold the camera button and power button (this boots up into bootloader) if you get a rainbow screen then you will want to flash the hard spl(androids on skateboards with a white background). so you can you use fastboot. here is where you can get the hard spl. just boot into recovery and flash it. i do not know if flashing the hard spl will wipe your phone like flashing haykuro's spl will, but you would much rather have the hard spl than not having it so the pros far outweigh the cons. welcome to your newly rooted phone. if you have any questions feel free to pm me and i will do my best to answer them.

Thanks for the step by step guide David...
I would like to ask a question on ROM types. I am currently using JF's 1.51. I have no problem with this (occasional force closes, which I suspect is from the SetCPU app). I have hearing lots of updates from CyanogenMod's ROM. What are the main differences? From your experience, what do you think are the disadvantages of CyanogenMod's ROM versus JF's 1.51? Would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks

sorry i almost cried when i saw disadvantages lol.
1 you do not have to overclock bc the phone is set up to overclock when it needs it and to underclock when it doesn't need it.
2 apps2sd is automatic if you have a second partition. there's a great guide for easily partition your phone with cyanogen's 1.31+ recovery image.
3 many cool things from donut.
4 a lot of themes are made for cm roms
5 a lot of stuff too much for me to list
if you really want to try it just get his latest recovery image. download 4.0.1 or whatever the latest stable release is. make a nandroid back up. flash the rom, and if you don't like it, or want to go back to JF then you can easily
David, Thanks for this. Just for kicks. If i want to reset to the factory defaults all I need to select is the "wipe data/factory reset" from recovery?
I think my post just disappeared...anyway... David, Just for kicks, If I need the phone back to original settings, I need to select the "wipe data/factory default" option in recovery? This will keep the new recovery method, just deletes the rom?
You will keep the recovery image. Yes it will just clear you data and stuff off the phone. Things like recovery image, SPL, and radio do not get wiped. If you do wipe just reflash a rom and you will be good to go.

Yeah it references the danger spl lol. I think thats the feeling that anyone gets when flashing it. I know i was like i really hope this works or i'm going to be sad.
Original question(s) seem to be solved.
Closing thread
Ok, i have a need for a bit of help. I rooted and flashed to Jesusfreaks adp. I tried to get it to RC33. LONG story short, JF is installed. My kernel is 2.6.27-00392-g8312baf
NO clue what that means but im at fireware 1.5 and Build number CRB43
I want to get to Cyanogen. It looks a little smoother then JF and more frequently update. BTWi have a G1
I followed this guide TO THE T!
simplehelp.net/2009/10/04/how-to-install-cyanogenmod-4-1-99-on-your-g1-android-phone/
and after i rebooted, it took forever to boot (which is usual)
All my apps crashed. My desktop didnt even load. It had force closes like *android.phone and *android.mail
I figured it was because i was trying to mod off of the Jesus freak setup. Can anyone help me out and tell me how to either COMPLETELY wipe my phone and restore it to its origional G1 official build and then i can re-root to Cyanogen OR a way to mod from Jesusfreak to Cyanogen
copy and paste this into your browser... follow the directions...
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod[/url]
Just read that guide over and thats all exactly what i already did. I have tried to signed-dream flash and then after taht the cyan mod. It installed the OS no problem. It just didnt have any programs working. IT is as if the phone had the OS but no program files. It wouldnt even load the phone at all. it was a black screen with a status bar and infinate force close screens. Any idea what that is a result of? I had to flash recover back to my JF os
Try this:
1. Flash recovery Amon_Ra (Great improvment on JF and Cyans recovery)
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
select console from the menu
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img
2. Boot into recovery (Home+Power)
3. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
4. Wipe EXT
5. Repair EXT
6. Flash Super D (I suggest Super D only because there is less flashing involved and it's a great improvement on the Cyan roms.. super quick too)
From here you should be set.
so if i already have root and all that, do i still need to follow step 1? Like flash with Amon_Ra? or can i just wipe, and reload the D rom? also your rom says its myHero2.2? is that a good rom? Im just trying to find the best rom to use on a g1. I have read up on Jesusfreak, its very stable, but it is pretty much just a open version of the regular tmobile os. THe only difference is the apps store is an older version. In your opinion, what is the best G1 rom and what are its percs?
thanks for all your help. This has been a working progress haha, finding a good rom and sticking with it. and can you give me a list of all the files needed for the best rom? if they have a step by step guide to it, thatd be great! i would look myself, but im still new at all this and there are like a bajillion different roms/ ways to load the rom. I would load the new recovery and then flash Super D. Again it's the most stable and is wicked fast. Yeah used to use myHero2.2 but i haven't updated my sig in a while. It's getting mundane at this point.

This is going to be more of a difficult question to answer. It just depends on what you're after. I really prefer Super D because of it's speed. Again its built from the Cyan roms so you get Cyan + extras. That's what I would go with. Simple, easy, and fast.

Well that's the cool part about the community here at XDA. All the files are set up for you. To flash a rom:
Code:
Download the .zip file and place it on the root of your sd card
Reboot into recovery
Make a backup (i prefer switchrom)
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Wipe EXT
Repair EXT
Flash rom from .zip
Reboot.
It's that easy.
I've been on XDA today for atleast 3 hours and havent gotten anywhere, I have owned my G1 since dec. 08, rooted it, and kept the firmware at 1.1. I have jesus freak recovery 1.41.
Like I said, I've been on XDA forums for 3 hours already and haven't had any clarity what so ever and am just frustrated right now. Without being 100% I managed to upgrade to 1.6 withy cyanogen 4.2.15.1 I lost everything that was on my phone, it hurts but I'm just frustrated to the point right now that the phone is functioning slower than before and theres lag between the screens and functions. With the upgrade, all of the phones original fucntions "contacts, alarm clock, calculator, etc." force closed and nothing worked, i tried to factory reset and because of the stupid sync issue from the begining skrewed me and about half of my info saved to my google account. I'm so frustrated right now.
I need to know how to install the newest recovery to hopefully work with Nand because I had to Manually rename the DRC83_base_defanged to update.zip and then had to manually rename update-cm-4.2.15.1-signed to update.zip to install each one at a time without having the ability to freely choose what zip i wanted to install.
I haven't been able to find what issues there are with using another phones firmware on the G1, i've seen the Hero firmware, the home screen looks gorgeous and runs like a dream, but I haven't been able to find anything saying that it is okay or a BAD idea to attempt to install it, also I havent been able to find any info on finding the newest g1 firmware or any mods to be able to make the g1 firmware look like the hero, or any other android platforms. I have just found constant cooked firmware after firmware with a hard time decyphering why one may be better than the other. If someone could help me, I would GREATLY appreciate it.
I continute to run into threads "how to root" or "down load this, and download this, and assuming you have something with options you dont have, make it work like this"
Please someone help.
First you need to upgrade your recovery b/c the one you have is very very Ancient with a capital A....You have to wipe before you flash the defanged then flash cyan w/o rebooting.
I want to upgrade my recovery, but I haven't found anything that can help me upgrade the thing. any links to tell me how to do it? and is there no order that I have to install the firmware? instead of having to go from 1.1 to 1.5 to 1.6, can i just go from 1.1 to 1.6 in one hit?
step 1: search the development forum for amon ra's recovery. read the instructions to flash it.
step 2: go to cyanogenmod.com and read the instructions for upgrading from scratch.
once you've done those two things, you'll be much happier.

You don't re-root when you need to change roms you just wipe in recovery mode
You need amon_ra
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4647751#post4647751
Like the other guys have said, upgrade to Amon_RA recovery. This allows you to flash updates from any filename, not just update.zip. The link is in my signature, or it's on the G1 Dev Forum in the sticky threads.
After that, boot into recovery and go to the Wipe section. Wipe all the things there, not just data. I never used to wipe everything either and I found that was the source of alot of my problems when changing ROMs. Obviously if you have your SD card partitioned and you choose to wipe your ext then you will lose what is on there.
Cyanogen has good instructions on his Wiki, but basically you want to flash DRC83_base_defanged, DO NOT reboot, and flash CM over the top straight away, then reboot your phone and you'll have a nice clean CM install.
This flashes the HTC Developer image which includes legal Google apps (Gmail, Maps, etc) and then flashes CM over the top which includes all his cool changes but does not delete the Google apps which we aren't supposed to distribute because it's illegal. Perhaps you are not aware, but Cyanogen got a Cease & Desist letter from Google, which is why we now do the defanged base method. More ROMs are moving to this method as time goes on, Pay's ROM and Super D are two which do this.
As an aside, I have found CM is not the fastest ROM. Some people have had better success with a ROM called Super D which is quite popular and includes many of the Eclair bits and pieces which CM does anyway. I personally use Dwang's ROM which is a much more plain Donut image however it absolutely flies. Both of these are linked in my sig, and are usually within the first few pages of the G1 Dev Forum anyway.
Thank you guys so much! I really appreciate how helpful the community has been. I've been having some issues with the the upgrading and maintaining because of my memory card slot dying out. A lot of the times the system will not register that I have my micro sd card in it or it'll say the sd card is blank. I just hope the phone lasts the extra 6 months till the end of my contract

I used to have this problem too, but it went away when I moved to 1.6 (coincidentally the same time I replaced the SD Card that came with my phone with a new Class 6 card). So either the upgrade of the OS or the SD Card fixed it.
In going to have to try the new men card cause the system is already at 1.6 but the phone is still trying to kill itself.

Hi guys, since i'm new i can't post on the development thread - [ROM] MeDroid ICS 4.0.3 CM9 V6.1 31/01/2012
Basically this has existed ever since version 5. The problem is if i open any app (say facebook, music, or even internet) things start to get really bogged down and stop responding for minutes. (I have to click "wait" like 4 or 5 times until it finally loads, especially facebook. Music stops randomely and becomes really laggy after 5 minutes of playing)
I know this must be a rom issue, because using a gingerbread rom alleviates all of these issues, heck even using a different ICS rom alleviates the issue but i REALLY like the MeDroid version (MIUI is too iPhoney and texasice just didn't tickle my pickle). Anyway, i'm seeing people in the thread saying "this is as fast as gingerbread!" and i'm like no way... the difference between a gingerbread build and this ics build for me is night and day, especially an oxygen build (that thing is lightning fast).
One thing i'm not sure of though, is i used an EXT4 partition for the A2SD. Now i can't remember if i experienced any slowdowns whilst this was here or not, i'm about to remove it and give it a shot, but i can't see how this lags the whole system out when i have about 3 apps installed.
I'm looking for any help regarding this though, thanks for anyone's time
Might be a bad sdcard.

Well, i've just taken the EXT partition off, and it's still seems the same to me, even with the SDCARD un-mounted it still acts so slow!
If i install a gingerbread rom though, it's as smooth as butter...maybe i should just wait for proper hardware accelleration before i commit to ICS as a daily

Try the zkernel #21with Medroid v6.1. It works smoother than the existing kernel in ICS ROM
you need an sdext4, 1gb preferred and 0 swap
you need to have installed the custom hboot, (System/cache/data = 220/16/200)
per OP page. not just blackrose
verify correct hboot installed by checking your bootloader screen for it to be listed and s-off
you need to have wiped ALL 3x, including System
Go back over OP page and do all requirements--
if you prepared correctly, no reason it shouldn't work,
if not working after that, reformat sdcard with sdformatter

I've tried all this. I've even booted without an SDcard and it still acts the same. It's obviously not the SDcard...i've tried that zkernel and i got a very similar benchmark score to the guy that posted it.
I decided to flash the latest stable cyanogenmod and it's working flawlessly and is very fast in comparison... i'm tempted just to leave it for now, since even the browser hangs around for 20 seconds, and pages scroll awfully without the HW acceleration,
I must just be expecting too much from alpha roms, but something's obviously not right if others can use it "perfectly"

well, if you want to try again, you could still redo sd card with sdformatter and try amon_ra if not using it now
and as you said you did wipe system 3x
maybe too many bad blocks for this rom. although I don't know if that is a big issue with blackrose
I have Class 10 SD and ext4 part. It's very slow. ia2sd script not as good as a2sdx maybe. Frezes and reboot too much. Wipe dalvik and cache regularly but not help. I turned to cm7 too.
Sorry my English.
