Have you tried Opera Mini 5 yet? I'm liking it on my TP

it's gorgeous. it's actually laughable that other than somes issues with switching between landscape and portrait it's a better browser than opera mobile.

You need to copy the jad and the jar file to a folder on your storage card. Open Java from your programs menu. Tap menu/install/local files. Opera mini 5 beta should appear in the window. Highlight it and tap launch. Enjoy!
Im loving it too. Preferred browser of choice on every WM device of mine. But because higher res in TP, the font looks small even with the largest font setting turned on.
By far my best browser (first try).
Question. Can we get rid of these two questions at the beggining?

Sure can, just download the "signed" version of Opera Mini. In the download page, choose "other download" and pick "signed version" (or something like that). It will be downloaded like any other and after installed, ask about connection, at this part, choose "always".
can it be set as default browser?...

So I suppose this is all about beta version 5 I got. "Signed" version is still 4.2.
Thanks @u2pop.
Interesting comments, maybe Ill try it one more time. Just a month ago I felt it was offering nothing over mobile 9.5
i cant seem to make it finger friendly, its really hard to click or double click stuff with my finger, i have to try to pin point with my nail or either have to pull out the stylus, is there a setting to change this?

I think all you can do is set the font to "large", in that way you can see the link more easily.
Can you minimize this and do something else, like respond to a text or make a phone call without it popping up 5 seconds after being minimized?
Unsigned version without double confirmation for data usage
Yes that's Opera 5 mini latest beta (solid BTW) not 4.2.
Just install the cab, works like a champ.
anyone notice that you cannot scroll through web pages using the d-pad? I am a diehard opera mini user and had to uninstall for that reason

Yea I noticed that too, hope its only for beta. You guys know how to save bookmark collection? On previous release theres option to save all of your bookmark online. Now i need to manually set.

Is IE unusable on the kaiser with the bug i hear about? I usually use the joypad for scrolling down, is it still the same?
Compared to the Hermes, how fast is the Kaiser at building pages up? On any big pages (eg. ebay) the Hermes really grinds to a snails pace and even when you think it's finished if you scroll down it's still (slowly) inserting images. Sometimes it can take nearly 60secs to finish showing an eBay page.
cheers, John
Which bug?
I use PIE with PIEPlus 2.2 and it works fine.
It is slow though, compared to my old Magician WM2003SE But thats obvious (WM2003SE is not flash based OS, no persistent-memory, thats why faster).
I am waiting Opera Mobile 9, which I am not sure will ever be released!

I don't notice any difference with the Hermes. What bug are you talking about exactly?
By the by: opera mini beta 4 runs great on the Kaiser.

Yes it works, but the scrolling gets laggy once you have scrolled down a bit. The page download times are probably on a par with the TyTn. The Touchflo finger scrolling works better (once you get the hang of it).
Opera Mini works faster and scrolls OK.
Mike
Im not having any issues with PIE in general and I'm already getting used to the scroll feature. In fact I picked up my Trinity today and found it annoying when I had to use those fiddly scroll bars.
I wonder how it compares to the experience on the new iPod Touch?
I heard from a friend that the browsing experience on that was very intuitive - but then he is an apple nerd!
My bigger issue with the Tytn II is still the radio used. I am having real problems with the gprs/3G switch and both phone and internet connection have major problems coping when I am in 1 or 2 bars of 3G.
And I am still rarely getting a full 3G signal which was not the probelm with the later radios I have on my Tytn and Trinity.
I will try my Vodafone SIM tomorrow and see if it makes a difference.

this is the bug i was talking/hearing about.
With the extra power and extra chips I was hoping the page building issue would have truly gone, it's my biggest gripe with my Hermes. My other gripe was the poor video playback on my Hermes (which has improved thanks to many WM6 roms), I hear this hasn't improved much either. I think I'll wait until a new ROM or a new device...
Touchflo doesnt work with my installation of Opera Mobile (8.60). Would have thought there would be 20 million threads on it by now so am thinking its just me with the issue.
Is touchflo something that has to be written into third party software of should it would with anything?
Opera Mini is the Java version correct?
New ROM will not fix that because it will be still the same IE.
IE is just slow, that's all.
Try Opera Mini and enjoy the super fast browsing experience.
You will never look back to IE, trust me.

Yes, Opera Mini is a Java application.
But it is running fine and superb.
Here what I got it installed in my device:
1. Install JBED-JAVA_MIDLET_MANAGER.2007.08.02.2.1
Get it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=49222&d=1188897204
2. Use IE and browse to mini.opera.com/beta
And follow the instruction to install it.
Note: Choose "High memory" version.
You are done.
Now, read this article below :
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-...ed-includes-info-new-java-midlet-manager.html
You will be able to:
1. Make a shortcut to the "Programs" folder
Then using the "Settings->Button" you can change the IE softkey to execute this shortcut.
2. Get rid of the network security warning.
That's it

All thats left is for it to be set as the default browser and take links from emails.
Cheers for that buddy.
The shortcut part just doesn't work for me. I use Esmertec and my shortcut based on what I see in the appsdb folder is
#30"\windows\jeodek.exe" -run s3_
Whatever I do it gives me the message - Could not find MIDlet suite s3_
The file in appsdb is s3_suite.jar. Even still, I tried from number s0_ to s3_ to no avail.
Hope somebody can help.

I get that same error - unable to find Suite 0 or 1 or whatever I put in.
Also the change in the selector file has my OperaMini still asking for permission. Any suggestions????
Thanks
Guys, I'm still getting the permission warnings as some other Opera 4 users are describing. I have done everything in this post including the selector.utf file. Has anyone figured out what might be causing this?

i could only get it to work witn Cloudyfa's JBed, not with the default JMM.
I finally got it to work with Cloudyfa's JBed. For some reason, JBed wasn't installed properly. It wasn't showing up and Remove Programs. I reinstalled it, reinstalled Opera, applied the shortcut/network warning fix, and all is working perfectly.
For other people having this problem, make sure JBed is showing up in the Programs list and in Remove Programs before you install Opera. Seemed to do the trick.
I will be doing all of this tonight, Thanks for the tips.
Same here, I too get the error message could not find suite s0_. The number is correct, but i noticed i dont have any .jar files in the appdb folder... Any ideas?
I also didn't have any .jar files in my appdb folder. I did see some files with s2_ extensions (eg. s2_.jah and _s2.obj) so I changed my suite link to s2_ and it worked. Once I got the link to work, I then copied the selector.utf file from appdb to my PC and ran the Fix.exe editor on it and copied it back to the Kaiser. Works perfectly with no more permission dialog, thanks so much for sharing!
My squence;
1-Install Jbed
2-Install Opera Mini and test to verify it works.
3-Create link in programs folder and test
4-Copy off selector.utf and "fix", copy back and it should all be good, with no more permissions required.
5-Map the program link to a hard key.
6-Crack a cold beverage of choice, life is good

Hmm.. no downloader for Tilt or any HTC models... maybe we'll have to try a different Windows Mobile phone? I will try 8525

They don't have the kaiser listed yet but the one we want is the "advanced version", which is the one that all the other WM devices use. You don't want the "basic" one. It still prompts you for the stupid "trusted application" every time, I'll just have to hack the reg once again.
The best part: It displays the FULL web page in the browse. Not some hacked up, trimmed down page, but the full page. You then click on the area of the page you want to browse and it zooms in. You can then scroll around using your fingers (think touchFlo) or hit the magnifying glass to zoom out. Yes, it is kinda like the iphone, but it does work very nice.

This is my very first time using opera mini, and I must say I like it. Its working really well so far. One handed browsing is simple. Web pages look alot better, and work out better. One setting I changed was to make images medium quality instead of low. Otherwise, I like it. It is kinda like an Iphone.

was that in the terms and conditions? if so its just a warning that data charges can occur while using it if your network applies charges for data. if your on a data plan then dont worry it wont cost anything extra.
It's a java app, so, it won't be avail as a cab file. Opera Mobile is, Opera Mini is not. This is Opera Mini (which I love).

suppose to load pages up to 50% faster. Auto suggests URL completions and new search feature. Also lets you save web pages to view offline and manages uploads and downloads from and to your phone.
Edit: testing now will report back tomorrow.
Thanks.
Testing now. It seems to be nice
Simply amazing
Using it right now and I must say it is freaking super-fast at page rendering!! I love this browser. Makes me love my Kaiser all over again....great job Opera!!
Which one did you guys download, the JAR or JAD? What's the difference?
Is pretty damn fast.
Browser is kick ass and lightning fast, i did notice a bug though. When entering an web address, you cant backspace. You have to open up the entire text input box by selecting 'insert symbol' in the drop down to correct yourself. Other than that, I didnt notice any bugs. this seems good enough to consider this my main browser, at least for now. Microsoft, Skyfire, and Netfront will have their hands full with this version
I'm using this browser for now. It's quick!
which java is everyone using?
I saw this post this morning and have been using it all day. WOW! It's the fastest broswer I've seen on WM. The only problem I've had is that it can't do drop down list, which is a problem when you visit boards like i do. Other than that, it's amazing.
Wow... crazy fast. Very nice work to the people at Opera. <Golf clap>

Maybe thats why my opera's been crashing...maybe not.
Edit:It actually sucks. It keeps freezing and giving me a white page.
Edit 2: Wow, now even 4.0 crashes...this sucks.
Just tried opera mini 4.1 on my HTC Touch. The browsing is VERY fast, but I've had opera mobile 9.5 for a day, and I have to say it's the best thing out there.
Seems to be about the same speed as 4.0 for me, maybe a tad faster with a few more options to choose from. I like it just for the extra options, no real speed diference here. using udk's 4/1/08 rom, i think its just basic midlet manager thats included in the rom thats running the java apps.
I cant figure out how to install it
The good, this version adds the option of not asking for network connection promission everytime it access the internet with out any hacks.
The bad, when entering the web address URL, there's no option for the software keyboard to pop up. If I use quick menu to open the the software keyboard (TouchPal) the last key I input repeats itself such as the dot and the space.
Aftering installing 4.1, I managed to open 4.0 and 41 at the same time. I thought this version allow 2 java apps open at once but I could never repeat it again.
WOW!!
This is fast as hell.

He is right. Go to a site like IPChicken.com and look at the Browser string under the 'Advanced' section and you'll see what Opera is reporting to each site you visit. Opera has a way to 'spoof' the User Agent to be like Firefox or IE 6 for example. Type in: about:config in the address bar, and scroll all the way down to User Agent and try 2 and 3 (Firefox & IE, respectively).

Hi
I don't have a problem with that, Always shows the "real" homepage, even youtube after installing the flash lite
hmm really?? everytime i go to youtube it takes me to m.youtube.com. Shoot even google goes to the mobile webpage. i wonder if i need to install flashlite to correct this? That doesn't make any sense though.
Try installing flashlite and see if its get any better =)
Didn't do a thing. When i got to youtube it takes me to m.youtube.com am i the only one with this problem?
Have you clicked on the link at the bottom which takes you to the full site and stores a cookie on your phone telling YouTube to send you to the full version next time?
Trying that as we speak
Yup just tried it and it works for youtube but other websites it doesn't. Like when i go to myspace and i click on view full desktop page it doesn't do anything besides go right back to the page i started at. I'm not sure what is going but it seems like maybe their are two different opera builds on these xperias. I wonder if that is possible
EDIT
I think it is the website i'm going to. Some just have errors i think. Has anyone tried to use orb.com? I can get it stream perfectly with IE but with Opera it tries to open it and it just crashes.
Orb works ok on opera for me as long as i can get a 3g signal
Everytime i try and use orb on opera it just crashes and closes. Did it work for you straight out of the box?
Since this thread is labelled in a general fashion, I'm not gonna open a new thread for my question, which is:
anybody managed to upgrade to a more recent Opera build?
The ones available work as in being able to browse the web, but they are buggy regarding keyboard input for example.
I upgraded to a newer version and it was extremely buggy. It crashed on me a couple of times. I like this one designed for the xperia. I don't like xperia's standard settings but after u change the settings its cool
One of the nice features of the touch pro was that the back button in opera was mapped to a hardware button. Is it possible to do this with the Xperia?
Yes straight out the box

I still have an issue. I can get it to stream but its really laggy through opera unless i use this pls winamp format but then i get errors here and there. I run it through IE and it streams perfectly. I've spent about 2 hrs going through the settings trying to find the cause of it but i can't seem to find it. When you use orb what format are u streaming in and what player are u using?
Windows media format (.asx)
and windows media player on the phone
hmmm i don't know why my video lags so much even on wifi. Audio comes in perfect whatever video i play is horrible unless i use IE. Anyone have any ideas what could cause this?
Could the orb be playing up, I just tried on wifi on both opera and ie and only managed to get streaming work once out of a few attempts. Kept getting server is busy.
How can I reinstall the SE Opera version? Where's the cab at? I managed to bugger up my version and now it won't load
Do a hard reset
i do like the keyboard that it comes with, but my fingers are too big. i hit the "." when i mean to hit "space", and i hit other buttons when i dont mean to. i want something that will learn my keystrokes. my buddy was telling me about HTC_IME and clicker, but i cant seem to find the right files. i looked into a tatto build, and took the apk files, but they wont install. i get "this program can not install on this device" error
just seeing whats out there. i tried installing the 320x480 myns, but the screen doesnt line up right on anything for me.
I use the free ShapeWriter keyboard found in the Android Market.

If you want only the english language...you can ignure the steps with language... But you must change to 120 dpi and change the dialer (contacts.apk)....look here:
Htc ime... it´s a long way....
Start....:
Installation Instructions
1. Install both HTC_IME.apk and Clicker.apk.
2. Rename/remove the file /system/lib/libt9.so (I suggest renaming to libt9bk.so). You need root permissions to do this (the program Root Explorer works great.)
3. Menu -> Settings -> Locale & text. Enable 'Touch Input'.
4. Go to a text field and long-hold until a menu pops up.
5. Select 'Input Method' and then 'Touch Input'
1.1 Download the latest htc ime from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567294
or here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=661525
2.1 make the system root/write access to change the name of libt9
- open terminal
- type "su"
- type "mount -o remount,rw /system"
... and then I could rename the file w/ Root Explorer (must be root explorer..i think)
3.1 change the language: look here:
http://ostebaronen.dk/changing-htc_ime-language-to-danish/
a bit easier: change to htc ime...go to sms and long press on the input text...now a menu come and you can change....
go in a explorer to: data/data/com.htc.android.htcime/shared_prefs/com.htc.android.htcime_preferences.xml (now visible)--and copy it to sd card...
open the xml and change the language code (like in the link)....copy it over the old one....
please do not change the lang setting in text input settings...(you don´t see a lang in this box now)
i think it was all
edit: for the correct view: change to 120 dpi....and take my corrected dialer:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=676102
Now it´s all...i hope
Super easy, you can get the HTC keyboard in 240x320.
Just follow the instructions,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=661525
You will need to d/l the two files and install root explorer.

With kind regards..Alex
personally i like the HTC keyboard because i feel the text prediction better because of the clicker.apk includes a calibration app and it seems to adapt to me alot fast than other keyboards.
i also like that if i want to use a number or symbol i can just long hold on a key instead of having to switch to a secondary menu all the time

just seeing whats out there. i tried installing the 320x480 myns, but the screen doesnt line up right on anything for me.

That's your problem. You have a 240x320 hardware screen on the Vogue, and you are trying to use a resolution that it is not meant for. I do not understand why people think they can do this, and still expect things to function. First of all, you do not NEED the extra resolution, I run about 20 games and 15 apps on my phone, of all different sources, and 240x320 is fine. Secondly, use LCD density "113", just change the build.prop file before flashing NAND, and you are good to go. I have zero issues at all, with any apps.

i AM running the 240x320, but tried the 320x480 just in case that was the issue. finally got it installed, but everytime i run the calibration it says" SORRY, the application has stopped unexpectedly. please try again".. maybe i just dont have the right file? i got it from another topic on here:

Can someone please tell me what is wrong with the default Android keyboard? I am 6'7" tall, and my hands are HUGE. My pinky is bigger than my wife's thumb, and I actually text with MY thumb, just fine, which is friggin huge, and I have no issues.
I am just baffled, because I see these 'alternate keyboard' threads all the time, so obviously there must be an issue for some ppl with the keyboard, but I guess for once it is not for us fat-fingers folks. Is it hard to use for small fingers maybe? I am so curious about this as the Android keyboard is such a breeze for me to use.

Yeah, I love the speed of the default keyboard. I've tried Betterkeyboard, and all those, Shapewriter, I think just about every one, and while some are cool, and hold potential, for me none compare to the speed of input in the default. I can type pretty damn fast with the default.
The only keyboard I can see being significantly better is Touchpal. If you remember it from Winmo, it was a FAST and efficient keyboard. But the developer keeps promising a release date, and renigging on it. If you feel like a laugh, go check out the forums:
