G1 is getting HOTT! - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I posted this in Dream Q&A but got now anwser. So I figured I would post it here.
Since the original thread is closed PLEASE no one-post links on the redistribution of these ROMS.
If this question has been asked I'm sorry. The old thread is kinda hard to search since the whole debacle has occurred.
I have the last experimental released..... LOVE IT! The ROM runs fine on my MT3G really stable. I helped a friend with her G1 last night and it is getting really hot now.
G1 with one click 1.4 recovery and last experimental
2G Partitioned SD FAT32/ext3/swap
Everything runs fine the phone just gets really hot.
This G1 has all the same stats as my MT3G and my MT3G doesn’t even get warm.
Thanks for any help.

Yeah this is going to get moved back. Just because your question didn't get answered in the Q&A doesn't mean you should post it in the DEV section.
Now this normally happens when the G1 is running something that's pretty intensive. The phone gets hot because it's discharging the battery quickly. You may try re flashing and setting up the partitions on the card again. If you're still experiencing problems check to see what programs are running. I use advanced task manager to close and make sure all programs that I'm not using are shut down.

I wiped and reflashed set up the partitions againd and I run TasKiller task bar. BTW I forgot to mention she has a 2g calss 2. Has anyone had these problems with smaller sandisk class 2 cards on a G1.

also, using the experimental build and using the phone frequently is going to push the phone harder because it's not idling. remember, cyanogen's roms are meant to push your phone to the limit, so it's bound to get hotter depending on what your doing.

Yeah it can happen.. but the last guy had a good point. You may also want to check the CPU settings. It may be overclocked.

SLOW Hero even with class 6sd?

So Im running JACxHEROSkiv1.6r2B and I have a 4gig class 6 sd card. I have the fat32 set up, ext3, and linux swap at 32.
I had a class 4 before, but hearing everyone rant and rave how fast hero runs with a class 6 I went out and bought one. However, hero still seems to be a little laggy and slow..... at least for me. I'll get the htc screen and the loading screen.. I even reverted back to superhero v2 and that was the fastest hero for me, no lag, no loading screens nothing.
But the newer hero's seem to be slow for some reason even with a class 6. Can anyone help, I absolutly love hero, just want it to be fast like how everyone says it is.
Thanks in advance...
hang your head in shame...
the speed of hero roms will vary depending on the phone itself, the way the phone is used, the settings on the phone, the way people use their phone, how they choose to set up their linux-swap size and what they set swappiness to, in short, different people get different results with hero roms, some find them fast, some find them tremendously slow, its most likely a mind over matter type deal... so finally we reach the point of all this.... stop with the why isn't my hero blazing fast threads and how do i make hero make hero faster threads. basically you have 2 options for optimizing your hero build, set it up exactly the way the first post of the thread tells you to, or you can pm the people with amazingly fast hero roms and ask them what they are doing...
wow i was a smart ass and still managed to give a half way decent answer
I did follow ALL directions, i've flashed tons of roms and experienced different things with different builds. Kind of wierd how superhero v2 seems to run faster then the new builds. Even with the echo at 60, some threads say set it to 10, etc. Followed all directions, and still have these results. When a thread says FAST, you kind of expect it. I mean gimme a break going from checking the market to your home screen you get a loading issue, c'mon. There has to be something to alter to fix it. I know im not the only person having slow issues with hero EVEN on a CLASS 6
there was a post i just read where some one set there linux-swap to 96mb and swappiness to 100 and said it ran really fast, that was the newest jacski hero rom version b i think. you could always try that, though whether or not it will suffer future slow downs remains to be seen. I haven't tried a hero rom recently (since 3.6.8.1 was released by cyanogen damn that was a while back) because of the slow downs i would get after a day or so i don't know much other than to try what others are saying works.
though with the way drizzy's new hero v1 is shaping up to look i might have to try it when he drops it. I remember trying jac's 1.4 hero, if you think the hero roms they have now have lag... but alas now i am reminiscing
I agree, his new hero rom is supposed to be the best to date, so we'll see, I just flashed over to cyans 4.0.4 since its fast. I also read about the 96mb and 100swap, but I want to see what happens in a few days with that.

I had the same issue with my 32mb swap. I changed it to 96 and saw a HUGE increase in performance. No compcache. Just swap with 60 swappiness and I hardly ever see Loading or the HTC screen.
Here is a thread that discusses this issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=551643
It is among many, however almost everyone has their own opinion based on their own phone which is of course based on their own needs. The key is playing around with it and seeing what works best for you. Start with the swappiness and then try your swap partition size and see what works best for you.
Then there was a vague tweet from jac about a possible fix for bluetooth, and twisted zero is supposedly getting really close with the led's, also with the htc kernal that was made open.
It really wouldn't suprise to me to see in another month or so a hero rom that competes with stock cupcake, maybe i'm too optimistic though lol

well when you compare jac's 1.4 back when hero threads were getting thrashed left and right to what the hero rom's are now. there is a vast improvement. I remember when I couldn't use a hero rom for more than a few hours without having to go to a stable rom. now my friend has had a rom on his phone a few weeks and hasn't said anything to me about it running horribly so maybe one day...

I agree that the Hero roms are stable enough for daily use provided that you make certain adjustments, but in regards to the LED and bluetooth I don't think they will be perfect for a long time. The LED will hopefully come soon since Twisted reported getting them to work. But I don't understand why we don't have fully working LED's like that was announce last week. Perhaps it was an accidental fix that couldn't be recreated? Perhaps it was a fluke? Who knows. What I do know is that the LED's still need work even after it was reported to have a fix. As for bluetooth... as far as I know and read it could only be initialized by manual command lines and not from the settings app. Even IF there is a fix... will it be full bluetooth (A2DP) or just enough to pair and use a headset?
The fact that the BT and LED's for Hero builds tend to work with MT3G and not the G1 tells me that it's hardware related and not so much in code or scripts. So if fixes to the LED and BT are developed and perfected then how will the MT3G work after flashed a ROM with these patches included? Will they conflict? Will we need different ROMs for different phones? I'm not trying to be negative or pessimistic but I'm just not seeing full fixes for these issues to be ready, available and implemented this week or next. Maybe in a month or two... but that's as far as my optimisism takes me. But I hope that I'm wrong.

Dream back tomorrow/stable ROM?

So ill be getting my dream back tomorrow, maybe tuesday. I shipped it off last monday for repair, the board was replaced and was shipped back very quickly, im surprised at how fast the repair has gone, so, im looking for a stable ROM to run. I ruined the last boared with the 'danger spl' so im afraid of flashing it again. I bought a class 4 4gig sd, i am going to order a class six soon, but im going for something that is good for everyday use. I used hero months ago with my first G1, wasnt too impressed, cupcake is to bland i think, and i cannot run anything like eclair because i have such a low class card. Should i just stick with 1.6 for now? Like i said, im looking for very stable and good for everyday use, ive been considering Cyanogens newest, but i havnt gotten the chance to read much about it. Im not trying to make a "Which ROM is better thread" theres thousands out there. My problem with cyanogen is a believe i read the camera does not work on the thread? correct me if im wrong but i constantly use the camera, i kinda need it
You kind of confused me but all of cyanogen roms have working camers. You must be thinking of hero 2.1 roms or eclair since 2.0 doesnt have the camera drivers for G1 yet.
Hmm, i must be thinking of another ROM, i could have swore it was on his i read that though. Either way, would anyone be able to tell me just how stable it is? Ive never ran any of his roms and would like to know before i dive in.

Yes Cyanogen/Enomether/dwang all of them are stable and faster then the OTA updats given by tmobile or whoever you have. Also there roms will still give you root access.
Camera doesnt work on eclair or hero 2.1 roms...

I liked the hero ROMs, dont get me wrong, it was just the lag that turned me off of them. Id try them today but i never really understood the partioning of the sd card, i finally got that right one time, i dont know how, but everytime im doing anything like that something always goes wrong. I havnt checked the guides out for anything step by step but i guess i will. Like i said though, i need it to be stable enough for everyday use, correct me if im wrong, but dont the hero builds still have alot of force closes?

No use either SenseHero or KingxKxRok Hero 2.3, never had a single fc. And if you use Amon_Ra's recovery .img, it is able to partition for you

Been away for a bit.....about this NAND

I am reading about NAND, seems that it is basically a way to flash Google ROMs instead of booting from the memory card.
I have a few questions, I have read that it makes linux run faster and the battery life last longer, my questions are about how much faster and about how much better is the battery life vs running from the card. I am still using a winmo ROM that runs pretty good and gets me a few days of battery life, but I am always itching for something new. I tried Ion and a few others but wasnt even getting close to a day on the battery and it would hang up and/or run slow at times.
Thanks for the guidance, I just wanna do my research before going around flashing with NAND, since I forgot which ROM I am using now and the ability to find it again if I want to revert back to it.
I would avoid doing a NAND flash unless you have a spare phone handy. I have a kaiser and I have been unable to find a build that is usable on a daily basis. Yes, running from NAND is definitely faster and better battery but its not worth it if you don't have another phone you can pop your SIM in if you get in a jam.

Seeing as your in the vogue forum, I would assume you have a vogue, so I would ignore the polaris user
Nand runs great, it's nothing more than a flashed nbh with android, so you won't need windows mobile.

Before my vogue died.. It's hard to say cause I spent so much time developing, installing, uninstalling, flashing etc. But when I wasn't 'playing about' I was getting about 4 days +. Data always on, but I rarely ever make calls..
It really depends what you're doing though, just like in winmo.

I want that vogue; I've never gotten much past 24h with mine with data on, background data off. I rarely talk on my phone, mainly texting, rare internet. have not noted a difference in battery life between nand and sd. people's experience with battery is very variable.

Eclair very slow on G1

Everyone is releasing ROMs based on Cyanogen's eclair builds and claiming fast fast fast. Am I the only one who is experiencing MAJOR speed issues on any eclair ROM? I have tried a few of them so far and the results are the same. Pretty fast initially, but after a couple days everything comes to a screeching halt. I've tried rebooting, clearing cache, clearing swap, and nothing seems to help. I'll pop my phone open and open messaging and it will take sometimes up to 10 seconds to open. Very misleading for devs to post a ROM calling it crazy fast when it is obviously not.
Maybe I've been spoiled by the speed of some of the donut ROMs I guess... Guess I'll be on donut til I get a new device?
I think it might be SuperE. Same thing happend to me and my buddy. Im flashing SpeedTeams Eclair rom right now hopefully gonna get better results. wish me luck!
Re: Eclair very slow on g1
No,can't be super eclair, I'm running
It and its just fine. Have you set setcpu and activated apps2sd? Wipe everything and try superEclair. Have you formatted your sdcard?
-------------------------------------
sent from my... naah yo u know tapatalk, xda and so on.
apps2sd enabled, I run about 40MB free on average. Even if SetCPU is maxed out. It runs decent for the first few days and then goes to crap. Last time I tried SpeedTeam's ROM it bootlooped on first flash over and over, even after wiping, repairing, etc. I'll try it again I suppose.
Probably just spoiled by donuts, but I'll keep trying.

You mention something about SWAP.
There's your slow down.
Get rid of swap!
It's also really important, if you want to use SWAP and apps2sd that you use
a CLASS6 - micro SD Card...
Otherwise this will be a big bottleneck for your mobile
I was also really suprised about the difference between my class 2
and now the class 6 card...

You used swap AND apps2sd AND C2 at the same time? Ouch. That's gotta be bad.
Using a Class6 is like night and day.
Definitely invest in a bigger/faster microSD card.
HTCclay's Superbad Eclair is kickin ass for me. i just reboot every night and i ran up to 3 days fine. Sure not as buttery smooth as it first was but nothing bad at all.
Thanks for the help guys; think I'll try running without swap for a while.

[Q] what do i need to know about the hero before i ditch my moment?

so i have the infamous samsung moment. you wanna know what really sucks about it? i listened to grooveshark for 10 minutes today. 10 minutes! the battery was at 75% when i started. when i was done, it was at 50%! yes, ive flashed to stock, yes ive tried other roms, yes ive done it all. disabled JIT, had the barest rom ever, and i still cant get a good battery life. so im pretty much set on switching to a new phone. but i need to know what the downfalls of the hero are. is battery life horendous? does it get really hot when you leave it in your pocket? how functional are the 2.2 roms? how much can i optimize it? give me all the info possible, especially stuff about signal strength and battery life. and rooting too, how easy is that? it seems a little unnecassarily complicated on the moment... thanks
Skip the hero and get an epic or evo....or wait a few more weeks and see what else there is. Sprint has already forgotten about the hero.

There's a few 1-click methods for rooting your Hero, so not complicated at all. Also, Hero battery life is pretty decent. Mine lasts all day and then some with moderate use. Other people get some ridiculous battery life out of their Heros with a combination of Decad3nce's kernels and Collin's battery tweak.
CM6 2.2 is more than fully functional I would say. The only problem I've ever had with it was the camera freezing and having to reboot my phone, but with the latest themed CM6 Roms (I.E. Redglass, Extremely Blue, etc), I've yet to have the same problem.
The only time my phone ever got hot was running Wireless Tether and pushing constant data through it for a few hours +.
One of the moderators on the Hero forums (impaler, I believe) has a link in his signature to a website that has about 6 or 7 radios that are compatible with the Hero and the signal strength that you'll receive amongst the radios will depend on your location, but flash these at your own risk as they have the possibility to turn your Hero into a shiny paperweight.
the hero is a nice device. the 4g devices arent worth the premium. data will never be worth what they charge even WITHOUT the ten dollar upcharge on the terribly bulky epic or the over sized evo. no sense getting a 'flagship' device because they change constantly. soon we'll have dual core procs on these phones and even then, consumers wont be happy.

wow thats a good chunk of info. im pretty much set on getting one now. one more thing, it has to do with overclocking. i *could* overclock my moment to 1.06 ghz, but if i can kill this with 40 minutes of music, thats not gonna happen anytime soon. i know that many hero roms, by default, overclock to 700something, quite a bit up from the measily 560ish that is stock. with either a replacement battery or one of those battery hacks you mentioned (or both ), would it balance out the power needed to run the processor faster? and make it run for 8-10 hours while im at school all day? thanks for all the good feedback guys. now i just need to find someone selling one thats not too scuffed up

Your friend must have jacked up his evo because my wife has one and it blows my OC'ed hero out of the water (CM6.1). You especially notice the speed in the browser and the games that I download on it without permission.
I agree the $10 extra a month is hard to swallow. Just remember that 2 years is a long time to commit to an older phone.
Hero is a nice device. It is small and does not feel like a brick in your pocket. The battery life is not bad. I have not tried any battery tweaks, but with some minor tweaks, I can get anywhere between 18-24 hours on a full charge. The only time I have felt the phone get hot is while wireless tethering.
I got it new earlier this year and as time progressed, I was getting annoyed with some of it's shortcomings, due to the software provided by Sprint. It felt slow, could not utilize the SD card for apps and such. The last straw was when "The Powers" said they won't be giving the Hero any more Android updates...
So, I rooted it and put CM6 (stable). Since then, I have been feeling like a child with a whole new toy. It works amazing, plus no extra 4G surcharge... .
oh something else i thought of. i think the hero has multitouch, please confirm. does it also have flash player? if it doesnt have either, thats ok. the moment has neither

What the battery tweak does is clock your CPU based on certain variables. You can set it's max and minimum limits whilest the phone is running on battery/USB power/AC power. Also, you can change it so it reduces the max CPU usage when the battery is below a certain percentage, as to suck the most time out of your battery.
I have my tweak settings maxed out at 729 mhz for any given variable and a min 176 mhz. My phone lasts all day and then some, for sure. I woke up with it at 75% (put it in airplane mode for the night because I was too lazy to find the charger) and currently it's at 55% after 8 1/2 hours of moderate use.
Results may vary, of course.
edit: I carry around an extra charged battery just in case. There's a Taiwanese vendor on eBay selling 2 spare batters + a wall charger (charges your external batteries without needing your phone with the option of USB charging as well) -- all for $12 or something. Definitely worth it and I think there's a post in the accessories forum with the link to it. Not sure if it died by now or not.
Good luck!
thanks for all this info guys! im cant wait to be able to get one of these things for myself!!! the hard part is the ebay bidding. i already lost 2 auctions that i was aiming for, trying for another one tonight, then done for the day. anywhere else that i might look to get an unlocked hero besides craigslist? i wont buy off there, no way.
EDIT: i finally won a hero off ebay!!! i got it for $110. i think thats a pretty good deal! but i was thinking about the rooting process, and i like the idea of a one click root, but i need a little more info. does the one click root install a recovery also? if it doesnt, is it possible that ROM Manager works with the Hero, and i can install clockwork recovery? i really appreciate all your info guys. thanks a bunch
im starting to feel really bad because im bumping this thread quite a bit, but i have so many questions, and my searches arent showing anything is there a way for me to bring a backup of the /data partition on my moment over to my hero? in the moments recovery, there is an option to backup the /data partition to a .tar or some sort of archive. is it possible that i could take that to the hero, load it, then create a simple nandroid backup? because i hate having to reload all my apps and preferences. thanks for all the help guys, i really REALLY do appreciate it.

also, is there a way for me to bring a backup of the /data partition on my moment over to my hero? in the moments recovery, there is an option to backup the /data partition to a .tar or some sort of archive. is it possible that i could take that to the hero, load it, then create a simple nandroid backup? because i hate having to reload all my apps and preferences. thanks for all the help guys, i really REALLY do appreciate it.
EDIT: wait a second... does http://unrevoked.com/original/ really work? can someone confirm this for me?

The unrevoked method really works, yes.
Personally, I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 on my girlfriend's Hero, but I'm not sure about the Recovery, after trying a few different rooting methods, the Recovery just appeared after rebooting, so I'm not sure which one did it.
The method I used to root my Hero is long outdated and was used for Android 1.5 Heros, so no help there.
About the /data backup on your Palm, I highly doubt it. Not natively compatible for sure.

Just start fresh on the hero. Put unrevoked on your hero(if you have firmware 2.27.651.5..... if it ends in .6 or .7 you will have to find the .5 somewhere and downgrade first, it's simple)
After using unrevoked, download Rom Manager from the market and flash clockworkmod recovery. Nandroid backup and then you can start flashing different ROMs.... I love the Cyanogenmod 2.2 builds....have fun!!!!!

yep, i read about the OTA updates to block the rooting. but take a look at this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=753910). this implies that you can root the .6 OTA. is that a typo, or legit? the wiki link above also says that .6 is rootable. i know how to downgrade if necessary, though. as far as the unrevoked rooting, i was right then! unrevoked then rom manager will do the trick? awesome thats way easy. and i know that i change recoveries within rom manager... i think im set guys! thanks alot for all your help. ill be sitting on that wiki link for a while. im gonna read all i can before my hero comes im super duper excited!!! and i will have fun!!! i plan on flashing CM6 anyhow
.6 and .7 are both rootable, no need to downgrade.

In the Development section, check for the Easy Root thread. Takes about 3 minutes.
