Still worth buying? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I'm currently using an Xperia X1, and frankly still happy with it..
However, I've fallen in love with the Android platform and the versatility it offers which I don't find on my Xperia.
But, since I'm pretty attached to having a physical keyboard, the HTC Hero is nothing for me, and i don't trust Motorola, so the G1 is the only option left.
My questions to you are, do you think it's still worth buying, and how will it hold up to the upcoming phones that are released?
Regards,
Ryu

I can't predict the future.... Right now the G1 is your best option if you want a hardware keyboard.

I can predict the future. I just bought a slightly used crystal ball from ebay and it's telling me you will find long lasting happiness with a g1.

oops double post

nice supreme, is that why you was downloading porn all night? Did your slightly used crystal ball tell you there's absolutely no sex in the near future for you?

the g1 is gonna have the most support compared to the moto and the lg, you know where to look when you have a question Im sure the development will go on for years, check out the dash (excalibur) how olds that phone and there is still development going on there keeping it up to par with 09 phones.

i would wait a month or so and see how the holiday phones stack up.

There are 2 or 3 android phones to be released in the coming months. I recall seeing an internal memo from T-Mobile a few months back. I want to say there was a G2 scheduled for release (with a hard keyboard) and another phone w/o a keyboard to be released in the latter half of October and early November.
I couldn't find the memo, but here's an article worth checking out.

Checked out the X1. I still like the HTC Touch Cruise better. No sliding keyboard.
Just my Opinion.
X1 all the way!
wow.. the Xperia x1 looks amazing!!! does anyone know the release date here in America? this is probably going to be my next phone.
which phone?
If the Xperia X1 lives up to the specs I have seen that would be my choice. If not (money no object) I think the Athena. But I would have to take my time and try different devices. I would likely have a larger device (Athena or Imate 7150 or 9502) for the power when I have the storage space to carry it, with a smaller device for everyday carry.

According to Engadgetmobile the X1 will be available during the second half of 2008. http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/10/sonyericsson-xperia-x1-qwerty-with-windows-mobile/.
For now, I'd go with the HTC Kaiser. I think it's a solid device. I got mines a few weeks ago and loving it. I already flashed it several times with dutty's roms, even switched carriers (tmobile to AT&T) because I was fed up with the mms issues I was having with the 6.1 roms for my herald. Since I switched carriers, I haven't experienced no more mms problems, and enjoy 3g connection, which is much faster than tmobile's edge. Just my two cents
Like everyone else has said, the X1.
Why? Basically, better features, 400MHz, all the good stuff, ya heard? lol
One thing in particular...I heard (actual read, rumors maybe?) is that this phone is going to sell for about $300-400. Do you have any idea how great that sounds? It's even cheaper than the iPhone, but let's not get my hopes up.

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, that was just a stupid post I put earlier about the phone "going to [be] sold for about $300-400."

I want to buy HTC X7510(16GB flash,WM6.1,128MB RAM). But, it is too expensive! I m now going to for cheaper ipaq 210. I'm deconverging. I'll be using herald as my phone but for pocket pc related tasks, I'll have the mighty ipaq for those purposes. And since herald will be there with me always, I'll have a 'backup' pocket pc too

need help pickin a new droid

well my g1 is pretty beat and my upgrade is comin up. i need some recomendations on a new phone. im on tmobile and im thinkin about the cliq since its the only one with a key board. i have big boy hands and the screen key board is a hassle everyone i tried at the tmobile store was a pain in the butt to use. is there any upcoming phones i should wait for that have a key board or is the cliq my only option
With Tmo? The Cliq is the only other Droid with a keyboard. The Nexus One (which I've ordered, so I may be biased) has a larger screen and is supposedly easier to type on.
For the record, I also didn't think I'd be interested in anything without a hardware keyboard... but the N1 caught my eye. Time will tell.
The Moto Droid is the best option with a keyboard. Might want to check out the GSM version of it - might work on T-Mobile 3G, but you won't be getting a subsidy contract for it.
I know you want a hard keyboard but... Nexus One.
iPod touch has a 3.5 inch screen, had it for a week and can type as fast as I can on G1 Hard kb
Nexus One has a 3.7 inch screen, just as fast with less mistakes, I bet
Gotta love when people listen, nexus this and that is all people waffle about.
Been looking to upgrade myself but screw the nexus and virual bloody keyboards! I want a keyboard plain and simple!
Google need to quit trying to be a fookin iphone! Looks like me and my G1 will just have to wait and see. There are a shedload of new devices coming with the android operating system so i'd sit back a few months and see what pops up.
Nexus can kiss my shiny white butt cheeks!

My contract ends the 6th of june, so hopefully there will be a good phone with a hard keyboard out by then. I could probably use a soft one fine but, well, i don't want to Also, nothing about the nexus one really stands out for me. Yeah, sure, spec wise it's amazing, but the android it's running is just too similar to what i'm running on my G1 atm. I want something different tbh!!
I do like the look of the X10 though, shame it doesn't have a keyboard

question to the devs: will win phone 7 series be possible on the nexus?

I'm saving up for a new phone, and I'm not sure if i should wait for wp7s. I really want the nexus as I love my g1, but I also want to try wp7s as I also really love my zune. will it be possible to port win phone 7 series to the nexus one? afaik, there are no winmo 6/.1/.5 roms for any android phones.
It might it might not. Windows phone 7 is having strict phone specs which is why only the HTC HD2 is rumored to get the update.
Compare the specs of the Phone 7 to the nexus and if too many things are out of line, it might be a no, it'd require too much time for the devs.
now why on earth would you wanna put a windows on nexus?
Would probably be possible with a bit of hacking here and there. If I remember correctly the requirements are something along the lines of 3.5" screen, 1GHz snapdragon, 256MB RAM and 3 hardware buttons.
Besides the larger screen and hardware buttons the HD2 is basically identical to the Nexus One.
is there a reason (like licensing) that winmo 6.5 was never ported to an android device then? b/c if it is licensing, I doubt we'll be seeing wp7s on the nexus one

It is because we all got Android to get away from WM, so there is no real desire to do it by anyone with the know how.
Also, the HD2 isn't getting WM7.
Ive been wondering the same thing and if we can get htc sense thats on the hd2

Do a google search... it has been all over the news since MWC and the announcement of hardware requirements that are not compatible with the HD2. Also, HTC confimed as much sometime this week, I think today, maybe yesterday.
Bonus, here is the link to google news results:

so since wp7s won't be on the hd2, I assume a N1 port will be a similar affair to what eclair on the g1 was a few months back: no camera, or other hardware features. I'll probably end up getting a N1 and waiting to see how wp7s turns out/matures.

Yeah, and WP7 won't be out until this fall anyways.
And of course you could always just get the phone you want now, and trade it and some cash for a future phone? Personally, I'm waiting till Nokia's Morph thing becomes tangible before I really sink money into a new phone.

Well in that case, don't even start looking until July, otherwise you will just spend the next 5-6 months fretting over nothing... although, if I were looking at an August upgrade, I would hold out until October or November since cycle wise, that is when HTC is done releasing their new round of phones.

exactly, my hope is that the nexus will drop in price by then. we'll see. I never buy anything without doing months of research on it.
I've only heard bad things about the current and older winmo phones but I'm curious about word processing I bet its got great Microsoft word programs if nothing else. Is it impossible to take winmo word processing apps and rewire them for android? The best option we have that I'm aware of is documents to go which is OK but it seems like winmo would have full Microsoft office for their cell phones. I'm sure im probably dreaming, I searched but Nov '09 was the latest info that I found...

Thinking about buying the G1

Ive been considering getting an android phone for quite a while so im thinking of the g1 becuase it is cheap and it has a keyboard, what are your guys thoughts, i have a fuze right now.
Don't buy a g1. I've had this phone since november 2008 and I can't wait to get rid of it. You should spend the money and get a better android phone, such as the droid, nexus, or wait for the htc desire. You will definitely have a better android experience with one of these phones. Its just to much hacking you have to do to make a G1 good.

Yeah I would stay away from the Cliq. There are roms for it, but there isn't as much development for it as there is for the G1. You'll find it to be quite boring and it's stuck on 1.5. If it's a choice between the two, get the G1.
Lol... Its pretty funny how everyone is saying the G1 is bad and don't buy it. Give it a month, there will be something then the N1 and everyone's going to say, "Don't buy the N1 its such garbage." G1 is a good phone. It won't take you to the moon, but it's not bad. =] I personally have the myTouch. I honestly wish I would have got G1 for keyboard, though. That's another reason I hate the N1... Yea, it's sexy... but touch screen keyboards have proved to be nothing but trouble for me. Besides misclicking (which you get better at) they usually lag. Sometimes slightly - sometimes horribly. They're NEVER as fast as a physical keyboard, though. They also prove to be trouble for games or things that use a keyboard. Most have full touch screen support, but I personally like to use a keyboard to play a game if it's an option. That's just my opinion.
I bought one off eBay for under $200 and I love it. I don't see how any other phone is better than it right now. It was a five row keyboard, trackball, and with all the custom roms available, it fits every niche that I want.

Beat THAT!
HTC DREAM (people... please call it what it actually IS and not what it has been DE-branded to...) is a very flexible device. Perfectly capable of running the latest builds of android.
The problem that some people are having is that the manufacturer (HTC) has decided to stop supporting it. This is no different than what will happen with the GN1 or other android phones made by HTC.
And the main thing to keep in mind is that this is a PHONE, not a supercomputer. Does it REALLY NEED to be the latest super-duper over powered crazy thing? NO. It really doesn't.
DREAM is very well known, and hacked up the wahzoo. There is virtually nothing that you can't make it do. Right down to being jtag-able.
Fact is simple; if you want maximum flexibility in your phone (more important than peak performance), DREAM is the ticket.

I would say overall that I am very happy with this phone.
Especially with the hacks and mods that I've done to it.
Its fast, stable and looks great.
I am more than happy with this phone, (Especially since I traded a Sidekick LX for it) I haven't been this happy with a phone in a while.
I used to have the HTC Excalibur and coming from Windows Mobile to Android is phenomenal, everything is so simple once you learn and get the hang of it.
So if you have the cash and you are curious just buy it and learn the basics!
Well worth it!
What attracted to me about this phone is that it is able to use the keyboard( hard keyboard is obviously easier to use) to type and gaming. Moreover, the phone is able to be modded and a variety of ROMs that might suit your style to choose from.
I would actually want to buy a second HTC Dream if I could. Seriously, if you really want to utilise your PDA phone properly, the Dream can do it all for you. However, if you really want high end gaming and more sensitive touch screen & proximity sensors to show off, then it's better to get the latest phone. I find that as it is, I am utilising only 50% of what the Dream is capable of. So I have been using it since last year and will continue on until I cannot do certain things that are important for work. Just my 2cents.
Coming from all different kinds of OS's, Sony, WM for many years, and finally the awesome Android OS.
Its hard to compete against it. I like the idea of a quality physical keyboard and screen. There is so much development and quality Rom releases here for our phone.
Devs know this and that is why they stay and keep doing what they do so well for all of us. Themers as well deserve much respect for their hard work and commitment.
Bottom Line: Buy a G1, you'll be hard pressed to find a better android phone at this time.

Buyers Remorse- Need help.

I bought a HD7 two days ago and am having serious buyers remorse every time I go into threads looking into the future of the device ranging from roms to regular apps.
I have a touch pro 2 as well as an HD2. I bought the HD7 for 150$ and its Tmo branded, I already RSPL'd it and am on Deep Shining I just want to know everyones opinion on the future of the phone.
Any help on reaching a decision is appreciated.

I'm not saying the phone is bad it looks really really nice the reason I am having buyer's remorse is because of the future of the phone. I keep seeing threads where people have given up on the phone and about future roms/apps.
That's really the only problem I have, just cant tell how long the phones legs will be for the future compared to the TP2 and the HD2.

no sure what apps you can't find, but i have found every app i have needed/wanted.

i am not sure why, either.
only advantage the HTC Titan has is better camera(s)/cpu, i find the large screen a disadvantage because of the resolution.
all the Nokia phones have only the cpu going for it, everything else is lame compared to HD7.
Was decidng to take it back to the store and look for the phone on craigslist but even there almost noone has the phone! I barely find a handful of people with the phone but everyone is trying ot sell that Evo 3D.
I am thinking returning the phone and just lurking craigslist for the phone but I dont know if people will be selling it or if it will die off quickly which it seems to have done.
