Hi...I've been reading through everything regarding Google vs. Cyanogen dispute. IMHO I feel very sad about it but....what can we do?? I like CM ROMS they are probably the best (I'm not saying JF, HAYKURO, etc, are bad, just that I prefer CM) but since all the C&D issue Gmail, Gtalk, Market, don't work..Well
Well the thing is, I've read some comments that on CM Versions up to 4.0.4 everything still works fine...it just gets messy from 4.1.x and up, is this true??
cause I still have 4.0.4 in my computer and I really want to flash it to this version...so please let me know..
Thanks!
We are all done talking about the C&D. There are plenty of threads about it. Download CyanogenMod Petition off the market to show support.
As for his ROMs 4.04 is stable. Nice ROM with lots of themes for it. 4.1.11.1 was days away from being stable. It is pretty stable. The only problems I have noted is some apps arnt supported with 1.6 firmware base. And sometimes my icons just disapear from my home screen but, after reboot its fine for another 24 hrs.
2 things really
1. you have a valuable pm
2. ummm 4.1.11.1 hasn't given me any problems except once out of a week or so i have been using it, i got the coma issue and had to reboot. also anything you have on your computer is well.... on your computer, is google going to stop every one they see with a g1 and go to settings- about phone and see if there a cyanogen mod version number there.
I think I didn't make my self very clear, when I ask if it is giving any problems I refer to the Market, Gmail, Gtalk still workin with CM version 4.0.4...that is the real question
i use gtalk all the time in 4.1.11.1. the market works just fine for me. gmail registers my emails on my phone faster then it does on my computer. i don't use maps to often (unless i go out of state, i know where i am going), so i haven't had a need to use it in 4.1.11.1, but it still should work.
I literally mean the only i have had with 4.1.11.1 is that one instance of the coma occurring. i have had no problems with anything else that is rom specifically related, the only thing that isn't the roms fault is that some of the apps are not 1.6 compatible, but again, not the fault of the rom.
I Understand
I get what you are saying. Google has no way of detecting that you are using an "unauthorized" ROM. Flash away. Except for the "coma" issue (was wondering what that was called), 4.1.11.1 is pretty nice. I prefer 4.0.2 over 4.0.4 for the stable but that's just me. Anyway, why not wait. Cyan has a surprise for everyone this weekend.

In the recent cyanogen roms since 4.19 which required flashing with the htc radio my gps has stopped getting fixes. I am limited to only cell tower location. Maybe this is a radio issue? If so what is the best radio alternative which will work with cyanogen roms? I need my gps back. Thanks.
I just tested gps on my dream with cyan 4.2.1 on top of the htc flash. Working with no problems, even indoors. If you don't get any better tips, I would suggest installing again, and this time wipe ext3 partition in addition to wiping, and don't restore anything from backup for root users etc. before you check the GPS.
Hi
This may not be a tip, but i had the same problems when i upgraded rom, I had copilot and Ndive that worked prior, But stopped after urgrading rom to CYAN 4.1.999
Only solution i found was to try other alternatives, the only one i got to work flawlessly was Sygic mobile maps 9 V7.71, gets a fix almost immediatley and works Perfecto.
Hope this helps
I have the exact same problem!
I flashed cyan 4.21 and stopped getting GPS fix. I wiped, wiped ext3 and installed enomther AOSP 1.6 without the expansion pack. I can't get a gps fix anyway...

Christ, thats an ignorant post
Cyanogen does not "mess up basic functionality", 99.9% of people running his roms have no such problems, myself included. It was probably something you missed or did wrong in the process. Did you follow the steps in his first post carefully, it is a more convoluted process coming from 4.1.11 because of the changes required by Google. In any case, rooting and installing custom roms has its risks and you chose to accept those risks, stop trying to blame someone else when it goes wrong. Take some responsibility, be constructive and try to find a solution instead of crying about it.
Incidentally, the reason Google had an issue with cyanogen was, completely legitimately, because his roms included some of their closed source apps (mail, youtube, market etc) hence why his new roms do not include those and Google are fine with him now. Try reading about it before you shoot your mouth off
I'm trying to work out the problem right now. I wiped again and installed another rom - not cyanogen. The problem is still here. It seems to be a problem that not only I have. It's quite possible that I, and others having the same issue, haven't followed the instructions correctly or did something else wrong.
Try flashing the radio

Well, seeing as my GPS just got a fix indoors with Cyanogen's 4.2.2, I think the problem is with you.
Now, without posting what you have done to get your phone to the state it is in now, how in the world can we help figure out what went wrong? This really seems like an isolated incident, and obviously not one that is suggestive of Cyanogen's rom being faulty (pretty damn insulting of you to blame him) since you have the problem even after flashing a rom that you give so much praise to for being 'stable'.
So..... how about you reconsider what you might have done to your phone, and try some troubleshooting...
1. When I am having issues with my GPS, sometimes I find it helps to disable GPS (both wireless and sat), reboot my phone, re-enable them, and try again to get a fix.
2. Use GPS Status2 to see if it is connecting to any sats at all.
See what happens... Who knows, maybe there is something wrong with your phone (ever imagine that?).
Not trying to be rude, or bash you, but you were pretty rude and bashing towards Cyanogen, and then you said you had the problem with someone else's rom too...

First off. I have tried both steps you suggested.
With gps status I can see 4-5 satelites and the lower right of the display says 0 sats. So I can't get fix, the gps itself works. Could be a problem with gps.cfg, I'm going to look at it now.
The issue occured right after I flashed cyanogen 4.2.1 stable. Even afer wiping entirely and flashing another rom I have the same issue, So I suppose that that the problem might be radio related. I actually consider there might be a problem with the phone, but a user who started this thread also had similar problem after going to cyanogen build. Maybe he did the same mistake as I did. Many times I have installed roms and had no issues while others had them - sometimes they occur sometimes they dont - depending on what spl/radio you are on, even what network you are on and what ROM you are coming from. Sorry for being that rude, I realize that now...

We all get upset when things don't work that we expect to, my suggestion about that is to go back and clean up your posts before Cyanogen reads them (hopefully) so as to avoid pissing him off.. He has given us so much, and we don't want to alienate him on XDA...
Anyway, about seeing satellites but not getting a fix, have you tried re-flashing the radio?
You said you have wiped, and flashed two different ROMS. The possibility of it still being a software issue are slim (but still there), if the radio doesn't help... it just may be a hardware thing.
I have never had mine get locks on satellites and not lock-in my position.
I know this stuff has been mentioned, but here is your basic troubleshooting process. Complicated, I know. Shouldn't take all day.
Download GPSStatus2 from the market and check to see if it is connecting to any satellites at all.
a) Go outside, away from buildings and trees, and open GPSStatus2. If it connects to 1 satellite, your receiver is working and it's probably some fluke of atmospheric interference (rain, dust, clouds, temperature, vapor, fog all affect microwave transmission; even air quality) that it can't connect to more. Try some different areas with different weather.
b) If it connects to zero, reinstall radio image from the link a few posts up.
c) Still no luck, go all the way back to stock firmware (flash OriginalSPL if you have DangerSPL installed, then RC29) and let it update to Donut, try again.
d) If it's still not working, your GPS happened to randomly die or something. Call T-Mobile cause you need a warranty replacement. They will send you a new phone, you send the old one back.
You know... if you are only trying google maps, try downloading some alternatives. One off the top of my head is RMaps.
I'm flashing the radio now. I have tried the other steps. I tried to get a fix from different locations, now I'm in the mountains and the device has a clear view to the north, where most sattelites are supposed to be... Yes it could be a hardware issue. As you can see another userr ATINsa, who started the topic has the same issue.
still problems
I don't know why you are attacking that guy. There is a problem. I had it on my old dream which was just stolen and replaced. And now I have it with the replacement. Prior to 4.19 and the radio you had to flash to keep cyan cool with google I had no problems. Google tracks, my maps editor, and google maps have a problem. When using wifi can sometimes connect more. The old cyan roms worked fined. Please don't try to explain to me how to use a gps. I have reflashed and redormatted. This has reccured with all roms since I had to replacwe the radio with the one required for him to be cool with google.
So the quesstion is, what other radios are the newest and will work with gps and cyanogens newest rom?
There are 2 people in this thread with the same prob. A third says google maps didn't work but anothewr gps program did. I have experianced this with2 googlde dev dreams. There is a problem and its not a user problem.
Something like this really sounds like a hardware issue. I don't mess around with the GPS code in my ROMs.

The thing is, the radio that is flashed with the HTC system image, should be the same radio that you were already running on your phone. I don't think that has been changed since 1.5 came out.
And the problem with your theory of this being more than just an isolated incident is this: most people aren't experiencing this problem, only a handful (two or three people here or there does not a system problem make).
I'm 26 years old and have had windows mobile devices and now I've been on android for about half an year. I have used linux back in school when most of the kids here, blindly defending cyanogen were toddlers. I didn't mean to attack cyanogen or whoever else. It's just that the problem is with at least 2 or 3 people and maybe more. The right thing to do is to calm down and try to go back to a state which works. I have reflashed radio and gone to AOSP donut build. Still no luck. When you wipe you wipe /data and /cache right? What about /system ? I bet it's some of the libraries that have something to do with controlling GPS hardware, which remains after a wipe. It would be a nice idea to flash the SPL again. It will probaby clean things up. This is the next thing I'm going to try. It's a good time for someone with better knowledge of how android works step up and give any other ideas.
For now try :
Flash SPL again (whatever SPL you are using)
Flash Radio (latest one from htc developer site)
Flash some basic rom, like TMO cupcake or donut and let's see of it works. That's what I'm trying to do now. If this doesn't help, we might try the proposed reverting to stock spl and RC29.

If you wipe it wipes /data, if you flash a new rom it "wipes" (it really formats) /system and /cache. Nothing is left behind on /system...
Ok. I fixed the issue. I'm on danger SPL , newest radio etc...
I reflashed radio (as adviced above). Prior reflashing the radio wiped and installed enomther AOSP+ADP 1.6, with exp pack 2.11.
After that installed an app from market called GPS TEST (Don't know if it had something to do with GPS being fixed)
It detected 5 satelites right by the window indoors. Then Google maps found my location.

well if you tried another rom and its still there .. then the problem might lie with your phone and not the roms you installing .... is anyone else around you with a G1 not getting gps location also ?
Hi all
So I upgraded my friend’s G1 to the Cyanogen Froyo that came out in July, but ever since, she’s experienced deleted texts and sometimes hourly reboots.
I’d like to find a more stable version. Sadly the way these forums are laid out means it’s always very hard to find such info unless you’re already ‘in the know’. So… can someone in that know please tell me what the latest, most reliable version is, if not the one I already installed?
Or at least a way to make it stop crashing…

Thanks. Where would I download it and are there N00B instructions to install it over Cyanogen Mod 6.0 RC2 (July)?

The "most" stable in my opinion is: SuperflyTCBY1.1DSF 2.2 Froyo. Starts with a bit over 80MB internal memory.
Been using approx 2 months with very little problem.
NOTE: Any apps you plan on running on homescreen, leave in internal memory. Runs better, loading widgets, etc.
Would anyone be kind enough talking me through how to install it over Cyanogen?
Also how to install an update of Cyanogen over itself?
The new Firefox is out for Android, and it requires 2.1 to work. I have Froyo, but it seems to crash as soon as I start the app. Anyone else get it to work?
I checked and it requires an ARMv7 compatible CPU, which means it won't work regardless of the version of Android you have. There was something about nightly builds if you want to give that a swing...
(https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android#System_Requirements -- click on the "experimental nightly builds link")
If you do try out the nightly builds, let me know how it goes.
I installed it, and it's starting up. It's been loading for nearly 5 minutes now, and it finally started up. It's really slow, which probably because it's far too early in beta. I wouldn't recommend any G1 user to try this. Waste of time. I couldn't even visit a webpage.
Not to mention that this beta is HUGE. It requires a ton of space on your device. Something like 40mb. I was unsuccessful in getting it to work on my g1.
the alpha worked without problems on my g1. just was a lil bit slow.
If it's anything like the desktop version it's gonna use a metric ****-ton of memory. I tried it and deleted it when it didn't work. I'm also on froyo.
Is anyone else having issues using the app HeyTell? The only ROM i can get it to work properly on is the stock AT&T 2.1, it doesn't even work on the stock 2.2 update. Basically on stock 2.1 I can send and receive messages perfectly without missing a message or having to close the app. If I update to 2.2 or flash a custom ROM, I can send about 2 messages and then it stops sending or receiving, I have to close the app and then try to send the message again. Once I open the app again, whatever the person sent to me is lost and they have to send it again.
Just putting this out there, I have emailed the developer and they are stating that they have no issues. I don't know what else to try, I have cleared the app's cache, uninstalled and reinstalled, I am out of ideas.
I've never even heard of this app before... I'll install it now and tell you how it goes.
EDIT: Okay, I obviously have no friends on this at the moment... But I've been clicking around the app and it seems fine? I'm using Paragon RC6 right now. The GPS/Map component seems to be working fine anyway... I can't really send a voice clip or message through it (no-one to send it to).
EDIT2: Okay, I somehow sent a voiceclip/message to myself and I've recorded it, sent it, and then received it fine. I'll keep playing around with this a little bit further in the morning.
I really appreciate it, it will work at first, and then just stop sending and receving, the little sending icon just spins and spins...then you have to force close it and then start it again, then it works for a few messages and then stops again.
I'm having the same problem with the HeyTell app. It's pretty much hit or miss for me, sometimes it works good for a while, sometimes it sends blank messages. I have a ton of friends using this app on iPhones or other Android devices and they aren't having problems at all.
I have emailed the developer and he states that it works perfectly for him on his phone, whether or not that is true, I am not sure.
Not trying to thread jack but for some reason my hey tell doesn't get messages on time. I'll be next to a buddy and I'll get a message that he sent hours ago. Does anyone else have this issue? I just have the 2.2 froyo update, no custom roms.
I thought for sure HeyTell would work on Official 2.2 as well but I have the same issue your stating. Like I said though, the developer states he has no issues...I am not sure what is going to happen.
HeyTell Support
Are you sure you contacted HeyTell support? I don't have any record of sending a "works for me" answer on a report like this...drop me another email to refresh my memory at [email protected] if you can - thanks in advance!
So! We're aware of an issue on the Galaxy S series phones (Fascinate, Epic, Captivate, Vibrant) introduced by 2.2 firmware (Samsung only, 2.2 makes HeyTell better on other phones). Symptoms appear to be spotty network reporting, media player issues (inconsistent record behavior), and the OS killing HeyTell during screen dims.
We're currently working hard to find a workaround for affected users (and trying to get more info from Samsung), but in the meantime, if you could do us a favor and email us your firmware revision number and any logs you have related to the behavior, we'd greatly appreciate it!
Since I had the issue with Stock 2.2 and not with Stock 2.1 I am running Stock 2.1 until there is a fix. If your asking me for logs I cannot help you there unless I put 2.2 on my phone. i am currently running HeyTell version 181, I am willing to load 2.2 and work with you and get you information, just let me know. I love this app, but my phone is kinda laggy and slow running 2.1 and I want to be running 2.2.
I"m also using HeyTell on 2.2 and having quite a bit of troubles. I'd be happy to send you logs if you could explain to me how to do so. Thanks!
Just a little update, I finally got tired of stock 2.1 last night and decided to try out MIUI. I was pleased to find that after sending more than 10 messages back and forth, HeyTell has not failed yet.... I will be testing all day at work today, I am not sure if they updated the app or if something in MIUI allows it to work. I just thought I would update those few of you that have had the same problem as me.
Everything is still working fine with HeyTell, I am running MIUI Beta 6 and HeyTell is working perfectly. I did notice an update to from the market, I am hoping that could be a fix for other cutom Roms and Stock 2.2.
As MIUI has no samsung crap in it, it should work fine, since it seems to be a samsung issue. Runs fine on CM7 as well.
We put a workaround into builds 1.1.3 -- that fixed it for stock, but didn't catch all of the custom ROMs, so we spun 1.1.4 - give that a whirl and it should work. If anyone runs into this issue again, shoot us an email with your model number (Menu > Profile > Email Support sends this to us, so that may be the fastest method, but also don't forget to include a description of the issue you hit).
Oh sweet so HeyTell should be working fine now with stock 2.2? I will test it now, thanks alot!
Ever since I downloaded the update the app works great! Thanks!
Hey Tell Message Queue Issues
I've been having a problem for a while now where message don't come in automatically, as if they're caught up in the queue somehow. I have to exit HeyTell multiple times, manually click on the message, hit the stop and play buttons, or multiple combinations of all of these just to get a single message to play sometimes. I'm using a Samsung SGS3 with Synergy. Any way to fix this issue? Thanks much!
I ran into this article yesterday, How to Flash CyanogenMod 7 ROM Samsung Captivate AT&T, and felt it was about time to learn about this. Plenty of you have already ROOTED your phones, and know from experience, what to do. But, I don't. Right now, I'm stuck with the options of accepting things don't work right, because of AT'T's unwillingness, or inabilility, to correct the issues I have, or reinsiall new, and lose all I've put on, or send back to Samsung for repair, and have them lose all I have on it, or try Rooting and adding a ROM, that may solve my issues. But to do that, I need a little help in understanding it.
First, if I try and run a program, like CyanogenMod 7, and it doesn't work correctly, snd screws up my phone, is there a way I can reinstall Android, and start over, or is that the proverbial kiss of death for my Captivate, and I'm stuck with it like that?
Second, is this the right ROM to try? AT&T can't fix my BLOCKS, of UNKNOWN APPS. The Settings change is easy, you click on activating Unknown, in Application settings..., unless you have no UNKNOWN, to choose. Also, in MMS settings, AT&T shows in a tutorial, that you have the option, of activating Delivery Report and Read Report. It shows this as plain as day, on that tutorial for the Captivate, yet mine, has NEITHER OF THOSE OPTIONS. Also, to TURN ON EDGE, the setting is missing, so I can't activate EDGE, which I guess is no big thing, since the towers AT&T has for us to connect with, THAT ARE 2G, are in such poor condition, no one can connect to them. Thank you, WIFI, for helping me get, ONLINE. Will this, or other ROM's, solve this for me?
If there are any suggestions of how to do this, and what to use, I'd appreciate hearing it from you. Again, I thank any effort, to help me.
1.cm 7 would not be the best rom to flash for your first time.
2. All roms are android, you are running at&t/samsung version of an android rom...
3. Yes you can get back to your stock rom if you don't like/something goes wrong (other than a bad bootloader flash)
4.all custom roms have all the blocking done by at&t removed so switching to 2g(edge) is possible and also faster 3g speeds known as hspa. And unknown sources is in the settings so you can install apps from outside the market.
5.the threads at the top of every section with a little thumb tacks are called stickies, give those a read through.
Like he said above. If you want the pretty much stock experience that your used to but want it fixed then I would suggest starting off with Cognition 4.4 or whatever it is now.
Sent from My KickAss Captivated CM7 OC'd 1.55Ghz/Undervolted
From newbie to a newbie, I took the advice of others and read threads for atleast a month before I flashed my first rom. My choice was Andromeda3, It has a written tutorial and a video on how to from start to finish. From what tools or apps you will need and how to use them , I watched that atleast 6 times and also while I was flashing the kernel and the rom. It may have been overkill but my flash was perfect and I'm real happy with my phone now. You may not go with the same rom I did but do your self a favor and do what I did to prepare for your first flash.
