I have the rogers htc dream and i want to root it. Im sick of the slow laggy rogers build and the horrid browser. I have a fairly good knowledge level in flashing devices. Ive flashed a couple of Motorolas but im kind of confused with rooting the dream.
I want to use : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=558301 but dont know if i can because i dont know how to find my SPL. I want a hero rom but would like to use a rogers customized one due to hearing rogers customized roms provide better 3g reception due to the new radio or something but i will settle for another rom if its fast and reliable
So if someone can give me a rom and stuff i need a simplifed guide id be very thankful

You can find your SPL version by booting while holding Cam+Power. Look at the numbers next to HBOOT
Flashing your phone isn't supposed to be very easy and I recommend learning about what the root process entails before continuing. Flashing something wrong such as the inappropriate radio or SPL could brick your phone.
If you would like another guide, search for "Rogers, heres your real root"
that is the original rooting guide and should work properly for you
B-mann said it good. Just don't look for a hand out, do your research. People that constantly want a hand out here are the ones that constantly ask the same repeated questions so they never learned anything. Read and reread what your doing.

Hi guys,
I've just gone through a guide on how to unlock my phone, so awesome, Step 1 is done!
Now, with having currently an Orange (UK) based stock rom, I'm looking to get rid of it, and needing to know before I flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519715
What is a Stock Rom?
I'm sorry for the stupid question, and I did search quickly, but nobody has asked this, and all the queries come up are people talking about stock roms.
Thank you,
It's not a stupid question, a Stock ROM is a ROM that is provided by your telecom company or the manufacturer of your phone (Like HTC), so that means a standard ROM without any of the wonderful hacks and additions the guys on this site came up with .
So when you buy a brand new phone the ROM that is on there would be a stock ROM.
Wow, thanks Mad.
Now the problem I have now, is it says "flash stock rom before flashing this", so what should I flash it to first?
I like the look of that rom above you see, and just not sure what to flash it to first.
If you bought your phone from your provider and not
second hand, it will have the stock rom on it, so you would be good to go. Make sure you read the flashing guide, and check radio compatibility with the rom you would like to use.
My preference is to flash with the sd card, rather than a RUU from the desktop. I've had much more success that way.
Good luck and happy flashing!
Criss
Thanks Criss,
How would I backup my stock rom, and radio?
Because a few people who make the Rom's are abroad, I've no way of knowing if the radio's they've used are compatible with my network provider here in the UK.
Whats some things I should look out for?
Thank you,
the search area at the top right hand corner.. Then just type in "how to backup stock rom"
Thats what I would do.
rofl, thanks Chumley.
I've just been lazy and started flashing from my Stock ROM.
Balls to it, hopefully I won't ever need to go back, but nevermind. My mistake and downfall!
I would keep a copy of your providers shipped rom around

You'll need it in case you need to make a warranty claim. You can check with the support section of their website, or the Kaiser Wiki could point you in the right direction.
No warranty on the phone, its secondhand.
I'll have a look to see if there are stock roms available through Orange / HTC for it.
Thanks once again!
The rom loads and looks lovely, shame I cocked up the theme, but i'll sort that out later when I can be bothered!
So here is the deal. I have searched these forums for a while and can't find what I really need. What I need is the most stable ROM available that has all of the features of the phone in proper working condition.
I have enjoyed using experimental ROMs with RAM hacks and the like but I am selling my G1 to somebody else. I need to find a ROM that doesn't have any issues with blue tooth, 3D, or playing video and youtube.
I apologize for creating a whole new thread for this but I have searched the forums and the only versions that I can find have some substantial known issues.
So what Android ROM should I download and flash? Thank you to anybody who can help.
if you're selling the phone, keep it simple. A stock donut rom ought to be just fine. Or hell, unroot it.

Unroot it. That way the new user will be able to get the support and updates they need.
If you dont want to unroot it, then this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538456
Hi people,
I'm new to this forum and this is my first thread..
Here is my situation, i just recently bought a Captivate through ebay and its locked.. I will try to find the unlock code using the method in this forum.. after i unlock it, i think i would love to update the android os to 2.2..
will any of this process have the slightly chance of bricking my Captivate?
i will not try to root my Captivate yet coz of the possibility of bricking it..
I will wait until there are solutions to this bricking thing, or when i feel bored i might try this.. ^_^
also, if you guys are kind enough, i would love to know what all kind of things that will brick a Captivate..
Thanks..
I am no expert but XDA helped me with my first smartphone (Palm Treo 750 bought on ebay) and I did everything without any problem. You need to read much until you understand everything clearly and always follow the instructions step by step because these guys know their stuff. Currently buy a Captivate. I love this phone. Already rooted and Im to upgrade FroYo without fear because if it becomes a brick I know that here finds it solution. Good luck.
got to read
Yep, that's the key. Read, read, read, and then you will have to read some more! I'm new to the board also, and this is my first smartphone. I've spent the past month reading threads in the development section when I have the chance (which is not very often...) and there is still a LOT of reading and learning I need to do!
Don't forget to use the search, which might or might not help. Honestly the biggest help is to read all the posts in all the threads - which will take a while!!
Lot's of great help on this board. I'm pretty close to feeling up to speed enough to cook this thing without fear of bricking...
I would wait a while before you do anything like installing the JI6 Froyo ROM. From what I've read, you have more chance of bricking your Cappy during that process than by doing anything else.
BTW, by just rooting or unlocking your unit you have very little chance of bricking your phone. It's what you can do after you root your phone that can cause it to brick. lol
Like the above poster said; "READ, READ, READ" and then when you decide you want to do something, read some more. I've been reading these forums since before August 15 when I got my captivate, and I STILL haven't done anything like rooting because I'm staying "stock" until the official froyo update is released.
Thanks for the nice reply guys.. and yes, i will keep on reading through this forum..
btw, from what i understand, rooting will enable your phone to install android apps from worldwide market right? does it safe? i mean, i heard that someone bricked their phone while installing some apps..
If you are interested in side-loading apps, try the Android Sideload Wonder Machine (it's called something like that). It works well for me. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but it is useful to know.

once you are rooted, you would still have to enable market access (for apps outside your att restricted market)
i would like to see how installing an app bricked a phone.....i call shens.
rooting is easy, and just by rooting your phone you wont brick it. you would actually have to do something to harm it. even then, its all recoverable via ODIN.
Sorry for a noob question.. but, what is JI6? ^_^
JI6 is the version of froyo (android 2.2). Go on the phone to settings-> about phone-> it's in the baseband version. Mine is I897UCJI6 (froyo).

there's quite a few people on aospCMod which will blow your mind coming from stock. I know they talk about an mms fix or something, but I would say go to that thread, click "readme" in the OP - it's a wiki - and ten follow the steps to flash it, it won't brick your phone. Also, make sure you nandroid your current setup just in case you dislike it or decide you want to back to stock for some reason.
So I got my phone last December and within a month, had it rooted - mainly to get rid of bloatware. I was using Cognition ROM at first, but then a guy at an ATT authorized retailer showed me a different rom that unlocked HSPA. The ROM that he gave me, which I later installed using ROM manager has the filename: KILLER23D+XXJPUDoc_V4.0_wipe. Has there been an update to this ROM? I love everything about it and am also wondering if there are any ROMs that are any better than this? I'm still pretty new at using the xda website and forums...
I like to tinker around, but am still afraid of bricking my phone. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys for all the hard work you all do.
p.s. I noticed my phone now thinks it is the Galaxy S GT-I9000... so would I download new ROMs for that phone or the Captivate?
Killer23d's out off date. it hasn't been updated since 11th December 2010. Their are many great 2.2 and 2.3 roms in the development section. Take a look around , you should be able to find one that is to your pleasing. Read the authors instructions and be sure you understand them before you flash anything
Be sure to read the Stickies they tell you about installing rom and other good stuff that you should know. And search around if you have any questions before you post, cause it might have been already answered.
And if you have a captivate you download captivate roms
good luck
I guess I really want to know which ROM is most like official 2.2 or 2.3? I definitely want to make sure I can still install unknown apps, and have the stock alarm clock on the phone because I use the alarm all the time and I don't want to have to download another one from the market. Do you have any preferences on ROMs that would do all this?
I also am a little confused on the ODIN stuff. Since I'm already rooted and using ROM Manager to flash ROMs, do I always need to flash ODIN before installing a new ROM? I read on here somewhere that the author metioned something about that, but how it was worded was a little confusing
I don't refer roms to people it is all personal choice. All roms can install off market apps
for roms in general* http:////forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
*2.3 roms need gb bootloaders
