Can I browse wap website without data? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With a samsung behold, I was able to browse a few wap websites (such as http://mobi.traffic.com, http://m.ebay.com...) without having to have data plan. Can I do the same with G1?
Thanks

yes if you use wifi......
they will see how much data you use. you will have slight usage even without a dataplan

i dont think android allows data transfer over gsm (although there are drawables for gsm data in framework-res). I guess you could try, you need to have a gsm data plan (they're legacy and I don't think they offer them anymore) though.

True, and you can use apps like "droidwall" to block all outgoing data sent from apps to avoid the slight data usage.

[Q] How can I remove internet?

Hey guys the G1 data plan is getting too expensive for me and I'm planning to cancel soon. After I call in and cancel, how can I get my G1 to stop trying to access the internet unless its Wifi? Or once I cancel I won't have to worry about this?
I also heard a rumor about changing the APN settings so you can still have and use the internet? Is this true?
no real way to stop the phone from accessing the web since even in the background it sends packets of information. that's just how the phone works that's why you need the data plan for this phone.
i want to cancel the plan cause my sis is paying for mine and i dont want her paying 300$+ a year on me. but i dont want to be charged after i cancel the plan cause my g1 is still accessing the internet. Anyways to prevent it from accessing the internet?

i just said no there is no way to to shut off the internet due to the fact that the phone requires you to have a google account to run it even if you flash a adp build and skip the logon proceedure the phone still access the web in the background without you knowledge you will still get billed for data charges at t mobs data rate which i think is 25 to 50 cents per meg used.
disable auto sync
if you disable auto sync you wont be accessing the internet much (assuming you don't have a ton of news widgets or something) then sync when you're connected to wifi (toggle settings works well for this)

the problem is even with auto sync off the phone still polls the internet in the background for updates and other things you could remove every internet reliant app off your phone and it still polls the internet it just the way android is designed he want to stop all internet traffic which is impossible without hacking the rom beyond what we do or pulling out the sim. even google maps requires to poll the internet in the background without him even turning it on. it's just impossible to stop it completely.
Install APNdroid.
Easiest, simplest, most reliable way: Go into settings>wireless controls>Mobile Networks>Access Point names, then click on each one and hit menu then delete. You will also need to finangle with tmobile through their customer service number in order to get them to cancel 3g for your G1 (they have some kind of a policy that's supposed to mean that you have to have an unlimited data plan with the G1, but if you're patient with them they'll let you cancel and just have voice.)
Even easier way. Download Toggle Data from market. That's what I've been using since I cancelled my plan. No more data in the background, so my battery life is longer. Sometimes my phone goes like 2-3 days without charge. (Of course without using wifi)
apns not only control how the phone connects to the internet it also handles how it connects to make calls which is also how it connect to edge/3g. so see the conundrum we have here removing all apns also kills making calls.
Before I bricked my G1, (I don't have a data plan) I just went to the T-Mobile store and told the guy what I could do to stop the internet. He just changed some kind of port number and stopped the internet so I don't get charged.

if i use apndroid will i still be able to use wifi? also im using a JACHero's rom and i noticed this in the settings...
Data Sync > Google > Background Date Usage [X]
APN Droid only kills the data.

No, the APN controls cellular data (internet and MMS) only. Voice and SMS are "built in" so to speak - as long as the SIM matches yoru carrier's records, they will work.
Deleting the APNs (or using APNdroid) will block cellular data, leaving voice, SMS and WiFi internet unaffected.

stop edge but allow mms

hi at the moment im using cyanogenmod 5.0.7 and i cant send a mms i figure out i had 2 apns one default and one mms i delete deafult one because cause me edge data transfer and i have no plan for the moment im thinking in upgrade. i just have my n1 so im wondering anyway to avoid edge data transfers?since if i activate again default apn i can send mms. but will be annoying keep switching. im using only use 2g networks
like a plus question, its anyway to disable AGPS? i want use GPS but im afraid next bill will be A LOT for data transfers, i used have a incite and i didint turn off the agps and for like 5 min my prepaid card was empty :S thanks in advance

It will block all data. AGPS won't work unless you have data connection available, if there is none - it'll just function as regular GPS.

APNdroid

anyone have tips for making it work on the captivate?
the current version requires a reboot, but i found that using quick reboot works too
right now im just hitting the apndroid widget and then quick reboot, does anyone know a way to make a script to tie the two together?
Get the APNdroid 2.5 beta (root required). Last I read it does work on the captivate.

You don't need APNdroid to turn your data off in other countries. All you have to do is Uncheck the "data roaming" box in mobile network settings.

Are there **any** red flag apps there? Does disabling data in the power button menu disable all data in & out of the phone via the data network? Are there any apps that would tell me specifically which app is doing what to my data network?
complain! and be glad you are not on a limited plan on verizon! though i miss the iphone plan which apparently i can get back i never exceed 2gig but the $15 a month plan is not for me.
if that happened in 20 minutes then you had the hsdpa connection bassically saturated the entire time. that is not right! complain and if they argue show knowledge, and if they still argue go higher and show knowledge. there must have been some kind of network error. plain and simple.
EDIT: without 3g coverage that is not even posible!
550mb x 1000 = 550,000kb/20min/60sec=458kB/sec x 8bits per bite is 3670kbps that's about 50% theoretical max transfer on att hsdpa. which is greater than typical speeds in many hsdpa areas. with normal 3g you couldnt do it and with edge you couldnt dream about doing it.

not likely. there is a problem but without knowledge of how the network reports these things i cant know if a problem with the rom is even possible and that's where such a problem would have to be if it were reproting wifi usage by mistake. the network is completely independant of wifi but i dont knw where the stats are recorded.
is the 550 mb for the month? did you have data disabled the whole month? can you be sure it was all at once?
edit: anyhow you have 3g watchdog so there is backup and you have the math which is backup. and i can tell you my typical monthly usage is 500-600mb and i dont take any measures to keep it down my data is always on and my sync is on most of the time. unless im using a rom that drains the battery a bit too fast. my iphone 3g was only using 100mb but i used that phone a lot less but i know 99mb in a month is entirely reasonable if you disabled data.

The 550mb was recorded as one data entry at 1 specific time under my specifics on the AT&T page; data has been disabled every time unless I specifically enabled it to use it (ie checking gmail, various school sites 4-5 times a week at most; I have good wifi connectivity where I go to school & wherever else I might be). The only thing that I had been doing was watching that 20m video over wifi w/ 3g disabled, and no 3g signal (i just went and double checked; i get 0 bars where I sat to watch).
if you are that carefull then the 99mb sounds right. 550 isn't hard to do but if data is disabled then you would know if you used that much.

sorry i dont track my data usage other than my bill. like i said 2gig plan is plenty for me so im not that into keeping tabs.
mms uses data as well. it is just a stupid billing practice that most cell providers subscribe to. it isnt that likly that you used that much texting unless you send images/videos constantly or texts are in the thousands, but it is possible in thoery. and i think texts will be charged as data even if data is off on the phone.

Mms travels over the data network but is separated through the billing system to not be charged as data. Text messages don't use data, they are transmitted to a SMSC using SMS transmission that is housed the same way that voicemail is.

all my credit..GONE!! T.T WHYYY

hi all ...for some reason all my credit just vanished!! it's RM14 worth of credit! and i just top up YESTERDAY!! my heart sank when i tried to call a few of my friends to hang out and i cant call any of them .. so i called USDD to check my credit and it's RM0.01 ..man ...so ..why does my credit drained so dam fast?? i full wiped my phone a second ago and i did realized my Data Enabled is enabled ( ironic) ..and i suspect it drained my credit...in a nutshell , what things in my phone will drain my credit? man my phone just revived from a hard brick few days ago and now my credit gone out of a sudden ...
Basic things u should know about android....
-it drains credit if data is enabled (i lost rm10 the first time i get my phone)
-almost all background apps want to connect to the net
Solutions:
-switch off data enabled, but u may need to switch it on to send n rceive mms
-to prevent credit loss when trying to receive mms, download apndroid...
Tips:
-dont ever think of surfing the net without an internet package...

Non-affirmative, Sir. After a FRESH install of GingerDX with the suggested Full-Wipe NOTHING is enabled ... NOT mobile data - NOT Wifi.
Even IF Wifi would be enabled by default it wouldn't be able to connect UNLESS you didn't encrypt your WLAN (WPA/WPA2 passphrase encryption).

Well, I'd rather say you may have installed some pirated software that contains some malware which is busily sending SMS without you knowing OR spamming the Internet through the mobile data connection (be glad that you seem to have a pre-paid plan ... otherwise it could turn out WAY worse if you get a HUGE bill by the end of the month).
At any rate, if you TURN OFF mobile data then there's no way in bloody hell that an app can utlilize ANY mobile data (no 3G data connection established, no game). However, if you want to hard-disable it ... EITHER clear your APNs OR install "APN Kill" (you will also loose MMS functionality) which 3G Watchdog uses as a helper to cut off 3G once the Quota is reached (for flatrate mobile data plans).
Also, set applications to "Only on Wifi" whereever possible.

If you say so ...
In this case it would seem my X8 was doing some applied magic all by itself. While the APNs are there (auto-config through the mobile network) the actual 3G data connection was NEVER turned on by default; not with the Stock ROM, not with Froyobread, not with GingerDX.
Ok, chances are it could be dependent on the mobile carrier, but that's another story entirely.
again..thanks BJ! so in a sense i should download wtchdog 3G to disable any kind of money oriented activity in my phone ? and where can i turn off the mobile data?erm..i do download a few apk files now and then ...but i don't think it will eat my credit ...oh and i don't have any mobile plans ..
1 more..will 3g eat my credit? since i am only 16 and all these money oriented stuff is not needed ...my parents will kill me if i do so
Sorry, memory failed me ...
The application 3G Watchdog uses to kill the 3G data connection is APNDroid (PAYWARE!)
3G Watchdog itself is a app that is counting how much traffic passed over your 3G data connection (upload/download). Since it's a watchdog it can warn and even disable the 3G connection if you're about to surpass the quota of your mobile data plan.
As a usage scenario example ...
I've got 15GB/Month mobile data.
3G Watchdog (Pro, in my case) is set to ...
- Reset the counter every 18th of the month
- Throw a warning once the quota is at 85% (of the allowed 15GB)
- DISABLE the 3G connection (by using blocking with APNDroid) once the quota is at 95% (to accomodate for inaccuracies).
This means that you can't establish a data connection UNTIL the counter gets reset at the 18th.

Depends on what kind of plan your phone has.
1. If you are on a pre-paid plan with NO data plan included BUT data not blocked...
Yes, in this case the mobile operator will charge you a certain amount per Megabyte or Gigabyte transferred (ask the support of your mobile operator or ask your dad).
2. If you are on a pre-paid plan WITH a data plan included ...
You won't be charged for as long as you stay within your monthly traffic allowance (called "quota"). If you bust through the amount and your mobile operator does not kill the data connection due to being "over quota" they will, of course, charge you for the amount of extra traffic you caused.
3. If you're on a subscribed plan with NO data plan BUT data not blocked...
See "1"
4. If you're on a subscribed plan WITH a data plan included ...
See "2"

...unless you really had your 3G connection enabled (as in "turned on" and as in "connected"). Since Android is based on Linux the system will ALWAYS use the network interface which got initialized latest.
If you have WiFi enabled and you additionally turn on the 3G connection, then all traffic will pass through 3G until you disconnect again. This is not a bug but related to the design of most operating systems.
tohno said:

Well, if you transferred ~150MB on a phone plan that does not contain ANY data at all, then it's very likely that you drained your pre-paid credit with these 150MB (assuming the traffic went over the 3G connection because it was turned on and connected without you noticing - that's why I had the "3G connection" icon added into the status bar of GingerDX ... 3G / Wifi / BlueTooth / GPS / Speaker at the top when pulling down the status bar ... alternatively you could also add the "Powermanagement" widget to your homescreen to have a visual feedback about what's enabled and what's not).

If it's voice or mms trough 3g then no, it won't eat credit.. only data will. And no, if you disable data transfer, it doesn't turn on by it self.
Tip: if you want to have data enabled all the time so you can receive mms's but you don't want it to access the internet, just go to your APN settings and change the APN field to something invalid. For ex: My APN name is net2.vodafone.pt, if i rename it to net2.vodalolol.pt, the phone will never make a successful connection and it won't waste my money.
There are some apps that to this.. I use APN Portugal, it can configure my connection but it also has a button and a widget do "Turn the internet down" without disabling data transfer. I actually don't need this in stock rom because i can send and receive mms with data disable, only custom rom's need this.
Edit: What APN Portugal does when you press "Disable internet" is adding "#apnportugal" to the apn field, like "net2.vodafone.pt#apnportugal" making it invalid.. you get the idea.
See if it's 3G Watchdog that is enabling your data..
This happened to me before. I lost €20. Worth of credit :0
Luckily in my country my network has a plan for students:
Top up by €20 every month and get
- 10GB Mobile Data
- 10GB Data for a Laptop (USB stick thingy).
It works for me: D

Nope, 3G Watchdog is a PASSIVE software only MONITORING the traffic that happens to pass through the 3G data connection - the application has NO MEANS to enable the connection by itself.
You know, if, for example, the (custom) ROM or some software would do fancy things like enabling the data connection by itself just because "it feels like it" you can safely expect me to post a well-worded bug report (I leave it to your imagination to put "well-worded" into the right perspective) into the developers direction and not recommending such crap of a software in any way, shape or form.

As Nikkopt already said ... voice or MMS will not eat your credit as that should be part of your phone plan.
Mobile data (the 3G Internet connection) is another topic. Again: if your phone plan does NOT have a data plan attached, and your mobile operator is also NOT blocking internet access, then this will eat up your credit like wild (that's where most of the mobile operators make their money by ripping off unsuspecting customers having a smartphone with a unfitting plan).
However, if you don't even have a slight clue about what kind of phone plan you actually got, it would be about time you take your dad and sit down by the table to straighten this thing out.
