I was wondering, if I don't have Data Plan, would 3g be useful for me at all, or should I just turn it off.
I heard 3g helps call quality too, but not sure if it works for me, since I don't have data plan.
Edit: I have Tmobile and yes I have i have 3g in my area
Also, is there anyway to making dialer vibrate?
-Thanks
Nope no need for 3G without the data plan.

Yep no data no 3g
It depends on your provider, obviously you need some some kind of data tariff, but not necessarily a "data plan". Where are you and who's your provider (In the UK I get 3G no problem on PAYG, but some places are mean).
I'm assuming tmo doesn't charge per mb... On my pay and go plan, data is £3/mb!! It's kinda annoying when flashing ROMs, as 3G normally gets enabled and I get charged for it :<

That is vicious, on my Virgin PAYG, as soon as use data any day it is 30p, then I can use up to 25MB, after that it is £2/MB. But if I top up £20 in one month, the next month I have 1GB of data, plus 6000 texts as a free bonus.

That's a sweet deal! I'm a really light user, only top up £10/m, but I'll look in to Virgin. I was going to switch to vodaphone as the do the same one day browsing/25mb for 50p, but they don't have any reception in my area :-(
Thanks for the tip ;-)
Just wondering, do all carriers in the UK charge by the MB? No one at all offers unlimited data?

Yeah I don't use too much, way too little for contract. I just top-up £20 at once though to get the bonus and then it lasts a while.

Virgin actually call their offer unlimited, but it clearly isn't when you read the small print. There are various levels of "unlimited" for various prices, but if you are caning it then you'd get a contract plan.
@Adam - Thanks so much for the info on Virgin. I just saw that they offer 300 when you top up a tenner, which is why I was staying with crappy O2. Just ordered my SIM Now to find out if they have 3G in my area....

Virgin run on T-mobile, so wherever they are Virgin are too. Plus that means my T-mobile locked G1 doesn't need unlocking.

It is unlimited, but after 5gigs they slow it down, probably to discourage you from using anymore
tether limit
i heard there is a soft cap after 5 or 10 gig but i use a **** lot and never experienced any slow down. i dont do torrents over it tho. any1 know how to set this up? set utorrent (or whatever) to use a certain port?
i used my laptop every day with my g1 tethered and it never slowed down downloaded music and movies on it also
Yeah, I think we would be pressed to find anyone who could say, "I was limited by T-Mobile because I downloaded too much."
Tmo used to have a data cap. It was 3Gb. Most other carriers have a 5-10Gb soft cap. Tmo, however, has removed the data cap, so that unlimited is now unlimited. (unless this has been changed in the last couple months, if so, someone correct me)

Unlimited data is unlimited, but this is how it works. After 10 GB, they kick you down to Edge. I don't have 3G here in El Paso, even though T-Mobile claims El Paso is a 3G city (it runs in MOST places only along I-10), so it doesn't matter to me anyway. I'm always on Edge.
My best friend works for T-Mobile and told me about how they throttle you down to Edge.

Unfortunately, there wouldn't be a way, because T-Mobile would be throttling your speed from their end. Your phone would still show the 3G logo, but the speed would be throttled to Edge. When the month is up though, your restriction would be removed.

Hey everyone! Hopefully I will go to the at&t store to pick up my Captivate tomorrow. However, I have a problem.
You see, my family has 5 members who have phone line, 2 of which have data plans. My father has a data plan and is content with his iphone 3gs and is eligible for an upgrade. So, he plans to pay $250 for a new Samsung Captivate that will SUPPOSEDLY be for him and his line. However, he is going to give it to me instead, and I don't have a data plan.
Is there any way I could unlock my phone in the sense that I can use it without a data plan? Like can I have 3g turned off 24/7? I plan to get my phone rooted, does rooting automatically do this/allow me to do this?
Thanks in advance.
No as soon as you put an AT&T Sim in it it will register on their network and a data plan will be added...
Sadly AT&T requires smartphones to have Data plans. You're not going to have any choice. Hopefully your old man won't notice, eh?
$250?!? How long has he had the contract with them? I picked mine up for $99.

For a little less than a year, he didn't wait out his whole 2 years lol.
well thats not possible if you have att but if you pay like 250 more and buy a vibrant off contract and unlock then you only pay 10 dollars for unlimited data
You can have AT&T put a data block on your phone, but that blocks mms also. Then the system wont put you on a data plan. btw data block is free to do, we know how they like to charge for most of there features.

You better research this - AT&T won't put a datablock on a smarthphone that requires data. Phones transmit their IMEI numbers when on the network - AT&T will see it is a Captivate and force a data plan on the customer.
If you bought it off contract, you may have a chance, but if you buy it via the subsidized contract price you need to play by their rules.
no even if u buy the captivate off contract you still have to pay for data but if you buy a vibrant off contract unlock it then its up to you whether or not you want a data plan
If you have a GoPhone sim card in it, they won't charge you for data. I have a GoPhone sim in mine and I've never been required to purchase data for it. I'm not sure about monthly bills though...they may require data on those.

i spoke with them about this yesterday, as i wanted to open a 3rd line w my old blackjack, and they told me that it would HAVE to have the min 15$ data plan on the phone, no way around it.

Indeed...but I was kinda looking forward to a data plan... living in the city = real time traffic updates are pure bliss. But I suppose the areas with traffic are areas with wifi anyway...haha.
What differs from yours is that my block started when I got the phone. You'd think somebody would catch on...
For some reason they allowed me to use the unlimited family data plan (non-smartphone) for my Tilt2 in the beginning of the year even though it clearly showed in my account that I was using a Tilt2 (bought off eBay). I did have a data block on my phone prior to the Tilt2. Picked up the Captivate off contract and still enjoying unlimited data since launch.
hey guys. i work at att as a sales rep and there is a way to get it without data...
lmk if interested.
People who have blocks on data plans are being grandfathered in.
You can no longer block data on smartphones.

I think a data plan is required... perhaps at first. My parents recently bought a phone from T-mo & they needed to sign up for a data plan, but only for the first month- then they complained that they don't even know how to use it to a CS agent in a phone conversation & the plan was removed. However, being that it's 4g, I'm not certain if there's a mandatory charge (like Sprint does w/ its 4g Evo).
Edit: Another option is if this was a retail purchase & not via a contract w/ the provider. Simply slip the sim card in the 2x & your minute plan moves into your new phone (assuming there was no prior data plan)... am I correct?

I wish it were always up to the consumer but that's not true. You are by contract (if you purchase the phone via contract) to have a data plan. Most of us will be forced to do this, very few can get away with it.

Yeah, you're right.
OP, the Android OS has an wifi adapter integrated & you can use your phone w/ out a data plan.
But apart from buying this phone off contract, you'll be obligated to have a monthly data plan.
i've had a HTC hermes for 4 yrs now w/o dataplan. somehow i got ATT to pay for it AND still don't have to pay for dataplan. i know it's different now
my current phone is dying and when it does, i plan to go w/this X2 phone. i would have liked HTC to have had the tegra2 chipset... but ce la vie =P
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/18/t-mobile-g-slate-and-g2x-dual-core-smartphone-coming-on-april-20/
^anyways, what i plan to do is either:
-do the contract, then pay early termination fee. if the phone was $200 and early term. fee is $300, that's still $500-600 range. i hear this phone will be $600-700 range.
-but if hte phone was $500-ish by itself w/o contract, then i'd probably just freakin' buy the phone.
either way will be better than paying dataplan for 2 years. $30/mo*24months=$720.
just wanted to know if i do get this, that the droid OS can turn off any 3g stuff. i'll also have tmo block it as well, no dataplan. thank.s
JediFonger, I recall hearing users buying this phone w/out a minute plan as well. Weird, I know. Why? Well, obviously for its surfing via wifi but, there is a app somewhere (I don't know too much about it) where you can use the 2x to broadcast as a wireless network. Pretty neat!
technically any wifi device can re-broadcast itself adhoc. one just needs the proper program >) hopefully i can get 1 minus dataplans.
just got G2x and 2GB plan... i have 3G Watchdog & apnthingy to turn it off if i hit certain limits. i'm still good with wifi, hardly using the 2GB

Of course you can.
Android OS offers a simple menu with a check-box that lets you switch all data transfer off (2G/3G). This does not switch off WiFi data.
You then have a regular phone with calls, short messages and WiFi which does not cause any data transfer costs.
You only need a mobile phone contract without fix data fees.
Silly Americans
Most phones in the EU don't have sim lock on and we can buy then unlocked straight from the carrier. On the downside, we pay nearly 2.5 X more than you do for phones :/
I had an unlimited $15/month data plan from back in the pre-smartphone days. I managed to get it when I had an old RAZR, and kept it through my Windows Mobile Tilt and Pure. I went in over the weekend to get the Vivid, and I managed to get it for the $99 price, but the sales rep said I needed a "qualifying data plan". I wasn't prepared for this, and since I had the kids with me I didn't have the time to really argue. I let them switch me to the $25/2GB plan.
Am I SOL now? Anyone know of a strategy for getting the unlimited back? I was never much of a data hog, I think my last month's usage was 400 mb or so. It's more the $10/month price increase that has me bummed.
On a positive note, the upgrade from an old WM 6.5 phone to the Vivid was mind blowing. Everything just WORKS, and it's so fast.
Thanks,
-Brett.
If you had the unlimited data for smartphones before the vivid, then you should have it after. If you dont, dial 611 and speak to the tech support and they can add it back.

i think you are. tbh though, 2gb is a lot for someone and very few break it. with icecream, youll be able to keep a better eye on it.
2GB is plenty. If you really are worried about it and prior to ICS, you can download 3G Watchdog in the Market. It's free and has a widget for your internet usage. Not exact, but it will give you an idea of what you are using. It will also tell you what you will end the month at if you continue your usage pattern.
Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm not worried about going over the 2GB cap (especially since my work offeres WIFI access so I can use that during the day). It's more of being sore at paying another $10/month on top of what already seems like an overly expensive wireless bill.
Thanks,
-Brett.
Yes you had UNLIMITED WEB prior to getting your Vivid. So that doesn't qualify for the coversion to UNLIMITED DATA. You could always try the 2G iPhone loophole
I did the same thing. Technically you aren't supposed to be able to use the $15 unlimited data package for any Smartphone, but their system didn't catch it on the Fuze (or what I had, an unlocked HD2).
I had to switch to the 2GB plan as well when I upgraded. As long as you had Smartphone Data Unlimited ($30) in the past, you can argue enough to get it added back on over the phone.
I went all the way up the support chain (And I'm an ATT Corporate Business customer) with no luck. Because I never had the Smartphone Data Unlimited in the past on this line, I wasn't grandfathered. (They checked my entire account history, all the way back to 1999).

Hey, question for you guys. I'm not quite ready to jump on these lte phones now, but I don't want to be left out of the party if and when ATT decides to stop grandfathering unlimited plans so here's my "plan".
I go into a store, tell them I have a vivid at home, show them a picture of "my phone" with its imei, have them input it and upgrade my plan to the new LTE plan, JUST so I know I have it for the future. (Unless one of you guys want to help me out, heh heh ) Thus, I will have an LTE plan, though no LTE phone yet BUT I have a garaunteed unlimited LTE plan for when ATT gets an LTE phone I really want. Any ideas why this might be a bad idea??

I have the IMEI, just not the actual phone (took pictures of a few display vivids and skyrockets). But when I got my International GSII, I called in with the atrix imei and that worked so I assumed this will work. Will definitely try this... Although I think I'm going to go into the store itself just so I can hopefully WATCH them click "Unlimited" just for piece of mind...
