cracked digitizer, need YOUR opinions - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ah i've went and did it so my phone slipped from my hands yesterday and fell face first even though it was in its case. i picked it up to reveal a cracked screen frowning back at me so i immediately thought of you guys and your expert opinions haha. now im not too informed on how contract extensions work but i saw the g1 w/ 2yr contract for 48.88 at walmart. i signed up for my brand new contract sometime january 2009.
now, my lcd is still displaying fine and the touch is still responsive as if it never dropped. if you were me, someone who has no experience opening a g1:
a. and find a replacement digitizer and do it yourself
b. buy a used g1
c. upgrade for another g1
d. wait for a different phone
i really like the G1, but are there any other android phones that are headed our way that you guys think i should check out? any helpful thoughts on the matter are appreciated.
edit: i'd like to add that i'm also on T-Mobile

Its going to be a lot cheaper if you just buy a digitizer and replace it yourself. It will take a little work, but you should be able to do it yourself.

If I was you and I had the money, I'd buy the Sholes/Droid when it comes out. It's basically a second gen G1 (hardware keyboard, 64mb more ram, 5mp camera, 854x480 3.7" screen ect).

yeah i was thinking about replacing it but everytime i think about those ribbons inside, i get scared that i might rip/crack/tear it or wont be able to plug it back into where it came from. i might have to take the chance though
and thanks for showing me that phone AdrianK, i'll look into it! do you recommend checking out any other android phones with physical keyboards? also do you guys see yourselves still using G1's 1-2 years from now?

found some info on the motorola droid http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009...akes-appearance-on-motorolas-site/#more-37162
looks interesting

I have a broken G1 I'm tryin to repair the Touch screen was unresponsive when I got it but I've been learning how to fix the inside parts as well as the outside.
I've come to a crossroads while I was rooting the phone the android popped up on the screen and I couldn't touch it so I took the Digitizer off and then cleaned both the LCD and Digitizer and the Touch was working but the Keyboard wasn't as responsive then put them back together only to find I didn't connect the cable that connects the LCD to the Motherboard I suppose. Took it back part and somehow the flex cable that connects the digitizer to the LCD ripped. Now when it turns on the LCD works but it's just a black blank screen. Shouldn't it work without a Digitizer?
I only took the Screen parts off not the whole phone could there be a problem with the motherboard connecting to the LCD?

LCD Replacement

Ok so i sat on my Tilt and busted my LCD. Me and my fat A$$!! I then went on eBay and bought a replacement for 40$, get it a few days later and start the operation. Following along precisely with a picture tutorial on how to disassemble, put in the new LCD and start the reassembly. I soon realize that the ribbon cable connector on the new LCD is just slightly outta place compared to the old one. After managing to get it on and having difficulty reassembling my Tilt,I insert the battery and the screen actually works...for about 10 seconds.... so i disassemble and reassemble a few more times trying to fix it and no luck. I then read about sub-par lcd's from eBay causing glitches and weird things to happen. I then proceed to kick my self in the a$$ numerous times. I have contacted the seller and he agreed to replace it. My question being.. has anyone had success with a replacement LCD from Ebay? if so who was the seller? And do any of the almighty here have any words of wisdom for a feeble tilt owner such as myself?
Yea I have words of wisdom, pay $hit get $hit.
That's what happens when you "buy it now" the cheapest screen on eBay
Screen
I can only add this since I have not "yet" had to replace a tilt screen. I have however replaced others including a T-Mobile Dash screen.
If you have push tabs on the socket for the ribbon cable - make sure they are pushed in and secure. I "did not" do this the first time I installed the Dash LCD and got pretty much the same results you spoke of for the Tilt. Upon dissassembly/reassembly - I discovered that the tabs were not down and secure. Sevured them and I was up and running!
Hope it helps you out.
hi there. not sure who you bought your screen off of, but here is the one i bought and successfully fitted a week ago
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110273898639
i actually think it is more sensitive than the original screen.

touch screen not responding in landscape mode

for some reason when im in landscape mode (ie when the keyboard is out) the touchscreen doesnt work at all.
it works perfectly when im in portrait mode though so im not sure what it is. Is it possible something got detached when the screen i slide out the screen? i didnt drop it so im not sure whats causing this problem.
Hi, I have the same issue as you currently, I have tried different ROMs and this problem persists. Have you found a fix for this yet or does anyone else know how to fix? I too fear it is a hardware problem but havent dropped it or damaged it in any way.
Strange, i've got this problem from today, touchscreen just stops responding once i slide keyboard out but the hardware buttons remain working...
but if i manually change screen orientation without sliding keyboard out, the screen is still responsive...
Anyone know what could be wrong?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561151
almost certainly. Mine started out being unresponsive in landscape mode (just suddenly stopped responding to touch) and then ended up black screening whenever i slid it open.
see pic 1 for what is probably happening. I've done the fix in pic 2 myself (although i've put felt on BOTH sides now) but if you have warranty then use it of course!!
HTH!
btw I think most X1 users are going to "Xperience" this at some point. I did nothing unusual to my device other than use it! Maybe Sony have addressed it since (mine was bought in January) but I doubt it....
i too have this problem!
i bought it off eBay though so i don't have proof of purchase for warrenty!
anybody know whether Sony ericsson UK accept xperia warrenty without proof of purchase?
i know someone i think in america got it repaired under warrenty without proof of purchase!
Hmm I'll give SE a call tomorrow
ive just sent my xperia off today in the UK but with the proof of purchase from o2, I believe it to be a hardware problem. However i would certainly see if you can blag it somehow to get it fixed, its obviously a problem from the manufacturer and we dont pay all this money for these malfunctioning products without some sort of decent warrenty!
unfortunately i couldnt get it fixed myself so i sent it to SE for repair.
i have the x1a (us version) and just called the xperia hotline and i sent it in. they didnt ask me for proof of purchase. i have already sent my xperia once before to repair the cracks in the body and keyboard.
im surprised as to how defective it is from normal usage. it seems very sturdy at first. i guess its also because i have never kept a phone for that long. i usually switch every two months.
well the guy i bought it off on ebay seems willing to help and is looking for the proof, if he can't find it then i'll just send it off anyway and cross my fingers!
worst comes to worst i'm 10£ short and i need to buy a new ribbon cable
@bigneeker
u switch every two months! my god you must be rich!
man the same exact thing happened to me today as well. first problems were when sliding out the keyboard to text someone and trying to press the send key during landscape display which wasn't registering so i had to close phone up to hit send. then later as u open the phone into landscape the screen was no longer responsive in that display.
then came the black screen when opened but if u hit the power button on during with the phone opened the picture would come out. now finally my phone has no image at all with the phone opened and can only work in portrait mode
i've had my x1 for about 10 months now so its still under warranty but man am i seriously disappointed with this. most likely they'll replace my ribbon with same cheap one and have to deal with this problem again in a couple of months.
same as above has just started happening to me too!
with mine though whenever i slide the keyboard out and it dosent work, when i slide back in it messes up all the screen alignment in portrait mode.
this fantastic phone is starting to get on my...s now!
I have exactly the same problem too! It started the day after the warranty expired! What should I do???
had the same issue, after a week t stopped workng at all. And they refues my waranty... And it would vost me 180EURov lol a ripoff!
So i took t home and dssasembled it, gues what, ribbon cable s halfway cut! Glue ddnt help, so i ordered nw one, 30EUR or 50$ from http://cnn.cn/shop/sonyericsson-xperia-c-28_638.html Thought i could also buy from ebay, same price.
Now i also ordered new housng from ebay, and this time i have and idea. i wll glue some small blockade inside sliding mechanizm. So it will prevent from cable being stretched too much when open/close.
Anyway, why THE **** DID SE NOT MAKE RIBBON CABLE LONGER!!!
Or w8, it was HTC, they did this on purpuse for SE?
Deffectve ribbon
To me this didn't occure yet, I hope will be later than sooner, but I wonder ... SE X2 has a different ribbon?
Maybe HTC is not as (market) neutral as they might expect it? )
the HTC direct product , like TouchPro, TouchPro2 have a same problem or not ?
Hope Yet
I just got the same issue, had my phone 1 year and 2 months now.
If you are in the EU your one year warranty becomes 2years on electronics regardless if the manufactures warranty is 1 year. Just so you know. Contact you local citizens advise bureau to find out or goggle it. Hope that helps.
the warrenty on the x1 (in the uk anyway) is 2years!
also! a warning about ebay housing, they are pretty much all fakes! and cause more trouble then they're worth! i pretty much wore out the screws whne i used one, had to literaly cut my phone apart from it!
cnn.cn is THE place to buy!

Uh oh... I disassembled my xperia to change the silver to black... I have a feeling my shoddy reassembly didn't help as after I did it slowly have some serious problems began. My reception/gps is terrible, cuts in and out all the time, my hinge is extremely loose and wobbly especially once in landscape mode, battery life has gotten a lot worse, and now as per the rest of us my landscape is pretty much useless with no touchscreen response also the screen alignment once back in portrait is way off.
I'm pretty sure I'm in for a similar surprise once i disassemble my poor phone again. Anyways any update on the new ribbon? I'm currently looking for a replacement tho even tho I really love my X1 for the most part, its hard finding a phone with similar/better features in my price range.
Hello overyone, I just bought off a old x1 which had the same problem. It was my 3rd phone. And i have replaced many screens. For now my conclusion is its the flex cable between the screen/buttons/touchscreen etc.....
you can buy them on ebay for about 28 dollars(incl. shipping)
Most of the time it is not the screen/touchscreen. Its the flex cable connecting it all.
see picture of the part i mean:
(search google for: "x1 flex cable"
Before opening phone: please be sure how to open it. Because it maybe very tricky to open if you are unexperienced!!!!!
Hope it help y'all

[Q] Will phone power up with crack in AMOLED screen?

First of all, I'm sure this has probably been discussed in some form or fashion, but the searching I've done has mostly resulted in stuff about the digitizer and not if the phone will power up if the AMOLED is cracked.
Anyway, I dropped my phone last weekend and cracked the digitizer. Phone still worked fine. After finding out my Assurion replacement phone would be a Samsung Vibrant, I decided to attempt to replace the digitizer myself. $35 on ebay and a youtube search later I went to work. FYI, not a fun project, I don't recommend it to anyone.
Sometime during reassembly I managed to crack the AMOLED screen
I finished putting it back together and now when I hit the power button it vibrates once and thats it.
My question is: Is it not powering up because of the crack in the AMOLED or does it sound like I effed up the reassembly?
TIA
p.s. I went ahead and paid the $130 for the replacement. So I got a Nexus One with a cracked AMOLED for sale along with the Google Desktop Dock and a 3rd party desktop dock if anyone is interested.
God, I'm gonna miss my N1 Kicks self....really hard
you can buy replacement screens on ebay for around 100 dollars. all of them say LCD though so they are probably the newer SLCD screens and not the AMOLED.
you could also find a broken N1 on ebay with a working AMOLED to use to get an AMOLED again if you want. i sold one i had that had a working AMOLED on ebay a few weeks ago for 130 dollars (it had a broken digitizer not cracked just did not work and it had a bad sim card socket because the previous owner thought prying on the sim socket was the way to dismantle the phone lol)
as for not powering up, well it sounds like it is powering up, the single vibrate is normal on power up but without a screen its hard to tell if its working you would have to leave it on and wait an see if you get any notifications or try calling it etc. another thing you could try is to plug it in to your PC and see if USB mounts.

[Q] Touch Screen & LCD Screen Broken (Need replacement suggestions)

My HTC Hero has a broken touch screen and LCD screen.
Can anyone suggest a cheap place to get them from?
And if anyone is wondering how it broke, I ran it over with my van.
Not intentionally of course.
Phone is from Alltel so it would be $95 to claim it on insurance
Also does anyone have any suggestions what I can put on the screen until I can replace it? It's rough on the fingers to use because of the cracks.
EBAY
Yup eBay has every spare part you would want for your Hero. I just ordered a digitizer yesterday (thats your screen), and that all you need to replace if behind the broken digitizer is a clear picture on your lcd.
This has happened to me twice. I got replacement on ebay for 30 dollars. It includes the whole front panel, touch screen digitizer, and lcd screen. It took me 5 minutes to replace. Just a couple of screws and a connector. Easy Peasy!
I dropped my hero yesterday as well. There was no damage to the screen/ LCD but there are a few scratches to the body. Are there replacements for that as well?
Supposedly sprint will fix any physical damages to the phone, as long as it still works.
supposed to do it for $35 in store without the $7 protection plan.
http://bit.ly/g5RfAB < Goes to the repair part of sprint's website.
I haven't tried it, so let us know if they will fix it.
I was quoted $35 by two different sprint stores to replace my screen. Still haven't fixed it yet, it is only a small crack in the corner and doesn't bug me that much.

Put regular tape over it
http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-HERO-OEM-LC...919428?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f057b8004
I bought that before..include LCD, Digitizer, and Front Bezel. The bezel was scuffed up and had a few nicks but the digitizer and LCD were in perfect condition.
Don't try that at home
Based on personal experience
I strongly advise against attempting a DIY screen replacement.
Here's my sad story:
1) I dropped my poor little hero, then managed to step on it screen down, completely scratching the entire screen surface.
2) I went on eBay and spent about $40 for a replacement screen/digitizer kit.
3) The kit arrived 10 days later. Very nice package - appeared to be high quality.
4) I followed the directions to the letter. (fwiw I'm generally pretty skilled at this sort of repair stuff, and have repaired other phones and computers with good results).
5) My little hero is no more. It works like crap. None of the buttons work correctly. The trackball no longer works consistently. It's essentially unusable (except maybe as a backup storage device).
If any good can come of this, perhaps it will be that others will read my sad tale and avoid a similar fate!

When you stepped on it it probably damaged the motherboard or some other part because the digitizer doesn't really have anything to do with the trackball.
You do have to make sure the trackball housing is inserted correctly in the new bezel. Also, do not overtighten the screws on the bottom or the buttons work wonky. I just tightened them a little, checked, and made sure I didn't over tighten.

[Q] Where to get a replacement digitizer

I dropped my revo the other day, and for the most part, the phone took it like a champ. The digitizer cracked, but all other functions, including the lcd screen itself, remain intact and functioning.
Does anyone have any suggestions where I should get a new digitizer? I'm somewhat skeptical of getting one from a place like repair universe, but if the quality is acceptable, I don't think i could beat the price.
screw it. i just bought a used phone off ebay for just a little more than the digitizers. if one of developers wants a revolution to play with, let me know. or maybe i'll start trying to figure it out.
