LCD Replacement - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Ok so i sat on my Tilt and busted my LCD. Me and my fat A$$!! I then went on eBay and bought a replacement for 40$, get it a few days later and start the operation. Following along precisely with a picture tutorial on how to disassemble, put in the new LCD and start the reassembly. I soon realize that the ribbon cable connector on the new LCD is just slightly outta place compared to the old one. After managing to get it on and having difficulty reassembling my Tilt,I insert the battery and the screen actually works...for about 10 seconds.... so i disassemble and reassemble a few more times trying to fix it and no luck. I then read about sub-par lcd's from eBay causing glitches and weird things to happen. I then proceed to kick my self in the a$$ numerous times. I have contacted the seller and he agreed to replace it. My question being.. has anyone had success with a replacement LCD from Ebay? if so who was the seller? And do any of the almighty here have any words of wisdom for a feeble tilt owner such as myself?

Yea I have words of wisdom, pay $hit get $hit.
That's what happens when you "buy it now" the cheapest screen on eBay

Screen
I can only add this since I have not "yet" had to replace a tilt screen. I have however replaced others including a T-Mobile Dash screen.
If you have push tabs on the socket for the ribbon cable - make sure they are pushed in and secure. I "did not" do this the first time I installed the Dash LCD and got pretty much the same results you spoke of for the Tilt. Upon dissassembly/reassembly - I discovered that the tabs were not down and secure. Sevured them and I was up and running!
Hope it helps you out.

hi there. not sure who you bought your screen off of, but here is the one i bought and successfully fitted a week ago
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110273898639
i actually think it is more sensitive than the original screen.

Weird display/screen problem, warranty case, or simply tough luck?

Hi, my sister's boyfriend is having a screenproblem with his TyTN2. Yesterday, he took it out of his pocket, turned it on, and the screen was more or less white, with one blueish "wave" over the screen. Everything else seems to work, he can use the phone, without seeing anything of course.
Now the weird thing: The phone wasn't dropped, there is really no sign of a hit or something. It's pretty the same as this user already described some time earlier inhere (click).
As it obviously seems, this is a TyTN2-problem, and not due to hitting/dropping the device, so, is there a hope to get this replaced on warranty? I hoped to find more threads on the subject "broken screen", especially one matching exactly this case, but until now, I only found the one cited above, beside many others of course about users who caused the broken screen themselves. Am I perhaps overseeing a thread treating this special case?
What possibilities does he have, besides buying a new device, or sending it in to HTC for repair?
I read something about a "ribbon cable" that could be "uncorrectly seated" (click), how probable is it, that this could be the case? And if probable, what cable is this exactly? I looked at one dismantling guide, but there are several "candidates" that could be loose?!
So, I'd be very grateful for every helpful advice, he's convinced he didn't harm his TyTN2, and I believe this, because he always carries it in a protecting Alu-case...
Thx in advance,
Eric
I've also once broken a screen without dropping/hitting the device, but just by it being too "compressed" in my pocket, which bent the screen enough to crack it.
Some screens that don't appear cracked can actually be broken too, but just in a location you don't see (the screen is a bit bigger than the viewing area and the exterior part is where the control chip is).
What I'd do is get a screen on ebay (can find some for about $80) and replace it. That's after disassembleing the device, checking the connections and making sure the LCD is dead.
Well im having the same problem since i got my at&t tilt for just a week. First it became white-ish after turning on out of the standby mode, after 3 times it became total white and didnt get better since then. I got a new lcd from ebay 3 days ago, tried it, same white screen. Now i ordered a new ribbon cable thats the cable that sends the lcd signals to the mainboard.
This is how it looks and where you can order it on ebay:

It also has the micro sd connection, and the speaker at the ear connection on it.
I expect this item coming this week. I will hope this will fix it.
ok please report the results here, I think I'm going to check that cable in first place too
I sure will report the results.
better of selling it
i had the same problem... i found it easier and more convenient to sell the damaged phone on ebay ($250) and buy a new one from ebay as well ($400). basically, i fixed my screen for $150. think about it

As im typing now, the htc tytn2 works again. My problem was the flex cable. Got the new one installed and lcd works again. But take a look to this thread, theres a guy that has also the problem and said just a other lcd worked.

cracked digitizer, need YOUR opinions

ah i've went and did it so my phone slipped from my hands yesterday and fell face first even though it was in its case. i picked it up to reveal a cracked screen frowning back at me so i immediately thought of you guys and your expert opinions haha. now im not too informed on how contract extensions work but i saw the g1 w/ 2yr contract for 48.88 at walmart. i signed up for my brand new contract sometime january 2009.
now, my lcd is still displaying fine and the touch is still responsive as if it never dropped. if you were me, someone who has no experience opening a g1:
a. and find a replacement digitizer and do it yourself
b. buy a used g1
c. upgrade for another g1
d. wait for a different phone
i really like the G1, but are there any other android phones that are headed our way that you guys think i should check out? any helpful thoughts on the matter are appreciated.
edit: i'd like to add that i'm also on T-Mobile
Its going to be a lot cheaper if you just buy a digitizer and replace it yourself. It will take a little work, but you should be able to do it yourself.
If I was you and I had the money, I'd buy the Sholes/Droid when it comes out. It's basically a second gen G1 (hardware keyboard, 64mb more ram, 5mp camera, 854x480 3.7" screen ect).
yeah i was thinking about replacing it but everytime i think about those ribbons inside, i get scared that i might rip/crack/tear it or wont be able to plug it back into where it came from. i might have to take the chance though
and thanks for showing me that phone AdrianK, i'll look into it! do you recommend checking out any other android phones with physical keyboards? also do you guys see yourselves still using G1's 1-2 years from now?
found some info on the motorola droid http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009...akes-appearance-on-motorolas-site/#more-37162
looks interesting
I have a broken G1 I'm tryin to repair the Touch screen was unresponsive when I got it but I've been learning how to fix the inside parts as well as the outside.
I've come to a crossroads while I was rooting the phone the android popped up on the screen and I couldn't touch it so I took the Digitizer off and then cleaned both the LCD and Digitizer and the Touch was working but the Keyboard wasn't as responsive then put them back together only to find I didn't connect the cable that connects the LCD to the Motherboard I suppose. Took it back part and somehow the flex cable that connects the digitizer to the LCD ripped. Now when it turns on the LCD works but it's just a black blank screen. Shouldn't it work without a Digitizer?
I only took the Screen parts off not the whole phone could there be a problem with the motherboard connecting to the LCD?

[Q] Touch Screen & LCD Screen Broken (Need replacement suggestions)

My HTC Hero has a broken touch screen and LCD screen.
Can anyone suggest a cheap place to get them from?
And if anyone is wondering how it broke, I ran it over with my van.
Not intentionally of course.
Phone is from Alltel so it would be $95 to claim it on insurance
Also does anyone have any suggestions what I can put on the screen until I can replace it? It's rough on the fingers to use because of the cracks.
EBAY
Yup eBay has every spare part you would want for your Hero. I just ordered a digitizer yesterday (thats your screen), and that all you need to replace if behind the broken digitizer is a clear picture on your lcd.
This has happened to me twice. I got replacement on ebay for 30 dollars. It includes the whole front panel, touch screen digitizer, and lcd screen. It took me 5 minutes to replace. Just a couple of screws and a connector. Easy Peasy!
I dropped my hero yesterday as well. There was no damage to the screen/ LCD but there are a few scratches to the body. Are there replacements for that as well?
Supposedly sprint will fix any physical damages to the phone, as long as it still works.
supposed to do it for $35 in store without the $7 protection plan.
http://bit.ly/g5RfAB < Goes to the repair part of sprint's website.
I haven't tried it, so let us know if they will fix it.
I was quoted $35 by two different sprint stores to replace my screen. Still haven't fixed it yet, it is only a small crack in the corner and doesn't bug me that much.

Put regular tape over it
http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-HERO-OEM-LC...919428?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f057b8004
I bought that before..include LCD, Digitizer, and Front Bezel. The bezel was scuffed up and had a few nicks but the digitizer and LCD were in perfect condition.
Don't try that at home
Based on personal experience
I strongly advise against attempting a DIY screen replacement.
Here's my sad story:
1) I dropped my poor little hero, then managed to step on it screen down, completely scratching the entire screen surface.
2) I went on eBay and spent about $40 for a replacement screen/digitizer kit.
3) The kit arrived 10 days later. Very nice package - appeared to be high quality.
4) I followed the directions to the letter. (fwiw I'm generally pretty skilled at this sort of repair stuff, and have repaired other phones and computers with good results).
5) My little hero is no more. It works like crap. None of the buttons work correctly. The trackball no longer works consistently. It's essentially unusable (except maybe as a backup storage device).
If any good can come of this, perhaps it will be that others will read my sad tale and avoid a similar fate!

When you stepped on it it probably damaged the motherboard or some other part because the digitizer doesn't really have anything to do with the trackball.
You do have to make sure the trackball housing is inserted correctly in the new bezel. Also, do not overtighten the screws on the bottom or the buttons work wonky. I just tightened them a little, checked, and made sure I didn't over tighten.

Replacement Touchscreen TF701T

My TF701T fell off my bed over the weekend and the screen cracked (even while in the PERFECTO case ). ASUS customer service wants to charge $200 for me to ship it to them and replace the screen. I'm trying to find somewhere online that sells the touchscreen replacement to do it myself, but can't seem to find it anywhere. Does anyone know a good source to find a replacement screen for the 701T?

Yikes, that's ridiculously expensive... I dropped mine last night and the screen cracked. The display is still alive, but it registers touches like crazy. Luckily I can still use it with my mouse to some degree...
Has anyone had luck with ordering parts directly from ASUS? There's no way i'd pay them that much for that job, and the going rate on ebay for replacement TFx00 screens (albeit every one BUT the 701, WTF!) is in the $20-$40 range. I've already got the tablet apart, and am working on separating the glass from the bezel with a hair dryer. Very easy disassembly.
I wanted to close the loop on this one since I initially asked the question. I ended up going with the tech support at ASUS, going through the RMA process, shipping my tablet to them, and having them replace the screen. In the end it was cheaper than the website above (they charged me $170), but it appears lke they sent me a new one in the end...because the invoice I got in the mail today said new, and it looks like it really is new (i.e., needing the firmware update again, not having a single thing that I had went it was sent, new registration number, etc).
So although it took them nearly a month, in the end I have my tablet back and it's smoother than ever.
I had one tf701t with a cracked digitizer and another where the LCD just failed (but the digitizer was fine). Since I was unlocked, I figured I wasn't going to get much help from Asus. I figured I'd swap the digitizer from one onto the other. I've done this on other tablets but I was unsuccessful on the tf701t. Getting the screen out was pretty easy. The hardware is close to a tf700, but one important difference is in terms of how the digitizer and LCD are attached to each other. On the tf700, there are screws to hold on the LCD. These don't exist on the tf701t and there are plastic tabs instead that don't lift up. It doesn't look like there was any intent to allow the digitizer and LCD to be separated again (unlike other tablets). I was unable to do so without damaging the LCD. I thought I did it, but when I turned it back on, the pressure required to slightly bend the LCD to separate it from the digitizer damaged it just a bit.
If anyone is able to make this repair successfully, I'd love to hear about it. Replacing the combined LCD and digitizer as a single combined unit, would actually be pretty easy given the assembly method (easier than previous Asus tablets). I think that is the planned repair process.

I successfully separated the LCD from the back of my broken digitizer without damaging it, and used the tablet for quite a while with the broken digitizer disconnected. A few weeks ago, digitizers started popping up on ebay from china, so I ordered one when they dropped from $150 down to $100. I saved all the sticky back foam for the LCD, and replaced all the sticky back tape for the bezel-glass attachment. The ribbon cable was mounted a bit closer to the edge on the new digitizer, so it wasn't clearing the bezel properly when folded over. So I had to bevel my bezel a bit, lol, and thus made room for it. So with great satisfaction of not breaking anything, I button the tablet back up and boot it...
WTF??? X Axis is inverted. I touch the left, it registers on the right. I draw a circle, it mirrors that circle. Damnit. I've heard of this being a problem with the TF201's, but this model too??? So now, I'm contacting the seller to see about an exchange or refund.

Personally, I would do like I just did with my motherboard replacement on my laptop.
**Just buy a broken for parts/AS/IS 701 and just take what you need off it. Then you have a parts tablet. I saw a few go for less than 100$ a few weeks ago when I was looking for parts. I just ended up sending it to ASUS though. I'd rather have warranty work if it's still under warranty, than void my warranty prematurely.
That being said,by the end of the year, I'll probably invest in a parts tablet, just in case. I live a rough lifestyle, but I try to take the best care of my electronics. That being said, accidents happen.
Hello,
My lcd+digitizer screen have broken down and I need to replace them. Please, any help? On ebay, all I could find were screen digitizers.
Best regards!!
TF700 Screen Woes
Just some related info that may be useful to some of you:
My Asus TF700 tablet slipped from my grip whilst crossing the parking lot from my car to the local Starbucks. To be fair, I've dropped it a handful of times before with no serious damage (including the very first day I had it... the tablet wasn't securely locked into the docking keyboard and I wasn't yet familiar with how to make sure!) But this time it hit the asphalt hard, striking the pavement directly on the corner of the folded keyboard/tablet case. The screen still displays, but the gorilla glass has cracks all over the place!
I took it to a local computer repair shop and they quoted me a screen replacement price of $150 to $250, depending on which screen was required. Apparently they were finding multiple part numbers for the TF700 screen, with overlap between the TF701 and the TF201. They mentioned that some screens are held in place with screws and so can be removed from the back panel, while others require actually going in through the glass itself to separate the glass and screen from the back plate. After reading some of the info here on XDA-developers.com it sounds as though the TF701 has the "fused" screen and the TF700 has the screw-attached version. In any case, I deferred on repairing it for now. I may instead try to sell the docking keyboard with supplemental battery to recoup what I can.

I have the same story, and found some hope on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55290214&postcount=146
maybe when more people have the same problem (same problem with the tf201 is solved), the solution is on the way?

[Q] How is the quality of the available replacement screen assemblies?

Hi, everyone.
So, I've dropped my phone in a parking lot and cracked the screen, and I'm trying to decide whether to accept the risk with attempting to replace it myself. A major concern I have is the thought of painstakingly carrying out a successful repair, only to find that the replacement screen is some cheap ripoff. I see a lot of people have discussed the difficulty of carrying out the repair, but I can't find any mention of the quality of the replacement screen they were able to obtain. As far as I've been able to figure out, no original HTC screens are to be found.
So if I shell out the USD 50-70 required to buy a replacement screen, can I expect it to look and feel precisely like the original?

$50-70 is the marketing price for a new screen replacement at present. Have you repaired the your HTC one yet, is it difficult?

I decided to go ahead and buy a screen from Fixez, because they've made an excellent instructional video on how to carry out the replacement, without which I probably wouldn't have bothered trying this myself. However, they sent me the wrong part initially, and I have yet to receive my second order with the correct part.
I'll be sure to give you an update when I do make my attempt.

Wait for your updates, good luck. :good:
I just finished my repair with the very good fixez instructions. Make sure you follow it closely as I glossed over one part. The ribbon connectors are released by tabs. Three of them are released by the black tabs. One is released by a white tab. I assumed all four of them were the same. When I tried to lift up the "black tab" on the 4th one, it tore off the connector. It's the video connector. There is a guy on ebay who specializes in soldering phone connector parts on ebay and I gave him $40 to solder on a new connector. Unfortunately it didn't work. I ended up needing to buy a new motherboard.
Also after I got the motherboard, and put it in, I had issues with the sim card. First of all, the replacement LCD/frame I got had a defective sim card slot. The button to eject the tray is broken.
I bought mine from here since it claimed to be a genuine product. http://www.ebay.com/itm/350863317919?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
I don't know how true it is since the cables don't have the htc logo on it like it does with the factory one.
Anyways, regarding the sim card, it might've had to do with this one small gray connector(2cm long) that connects the top board to the motherboard. I had it oriented the wrong way which made the connector touch the screw, which might've shunted the contact. After I oriented it away from the screw, it's been working fine.
So essentially I ran into a lot of small issues that gave me a lot of headaches. If I were to do it over again, I not sure if I would've. But then again, I probably would've saved myself a lot of trouble if I were more meticulous, short of the sim card eject issue.
Do your phone function well after repair? Any lessons that you have known that how to tell high quality screen to the poor? I also got caught in the same situation. But i don't want to buy the part in ebay. Do you have any suggestions? i would appreciate it!
I just carried out my repair today, and I must say I'm very pleased with the result! I have several friends who also have this phone, and I've been able to compare the screen to theirs. The look and feel of the hardware itself is indistinguishable from the original. The HTC logo, the perforated bezel, the smoothness of the digitizer -- everything is precisely the same as far as I can tell. The image it displays is also indistinguishable from the original, in all its brilliance. By every metric I've been able to come up with, there's no difference.
As for the repair, I had no trouble carrying it out. I did notice the flip-up connector trap mentioned by astroidea, but my level of inconfidence with the task was such that I followed the instructions very, very closely. The instructions themselves were excellent. Nothing was skipped and everything looked exactly as in my phone (with the exception of the brown and blue coax cables, which weren't crossed on my phone). I've incurred some very minor aesthetic damage where I pried against the back cover, but the internals all seem to be functioning as they should. All in all, the repair took about three hours following the instruction videos from Fixez.
Despite the long wait, I got a good impression of Fixez. They replied to all my e-mails in a timely manner, and were willing to cover the expensive international return shipping for the item they sent me in error (which is only reasonable, but still). I'll still buy my next screen from them if, heavens forbid, I need one again.
