T-mobile G1 to HTC Dream - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
I have the t-mobile G1 and was wondering if there was something i could do to it, so that when i turned it on it looked like it was a sim free one and it loaded saying HTC Dream and not t-mobile G1.
Thanks alot
James

if u root u jus have to change ur splash image , thru adb ,unless theres an easier way ,adb scares me

If you find an unbranded splash, please let me know. I asked about one a few weeks ago & got no reply.

Couldn't some one just pull there splash from a rooted Non-Tmo phone, through adb?

Most other providers also include a splash screen. So it's got to be someone with the HTC splash. I have seen them for Magic, but never for Dream. If we don't find one soon I guess I'll just edit the one from Magic, but it would be nice to have an original. Anybody know which market (if any) sells them unbranded?

Not nearly as much as the thought of pecking away at that tiny keyboard & small screen for hours.

I didn't think HTC sold the phone as 'HTC Dream', maybe you mean ADP1?
The ADP1 splash image can be found in this thread. It needs to be flashed via fastboot, so you will need HardSPL or 1.33.2005

Thanks for the link to the ADP splash.
They have sold it as Dream in several places however. I'm pretty sure most carriers other than T-Mobile (w/ the exception of ones sold by google) sell it as Dream.
They even have a separate product page for it.
G1
http://www.htc.com/www/product/g1/overview.html
Dream
http://www.htc.com/www/product/dream/overview.html
Unfortunately, they probably all have a carrier specific splash. Guess it's time to make one

Oh I see...
Oh well, might aswell just make your own...

I just asked a question about this on a different android website, but I haven't gotten an answer. I bought my t-mobile g1 off of ebay, i also only have prepaid tmobile togo. The weird thing is that when i turned the phone on the first time I used it. it didn't ask me to log in to a google account or anything. I was able to use wifi to set up my gmail account. anyways the question i had asked was that when my phone boots up it has the 'htc dream' logo instead of the tmobile g1. And I was wondering if that meant my phone was rooted or not. It also says htc dream under my settings, phone model number.

Can you post some larger pics? I can hardly see these.
ive been researching this phone the past couple days, and im highly interested in upgrading from my dash to the kaiser. im in the market for a new smartphone a) cause i am bored with my dash, done everything ive wanted to it and b) its slow. i have a low budget, id say 300 tops and everywhere ive looked to buy this phone is at least 400. ive tried lookin for promo codes and all that fun stuff, nothin. i dont want to buy one off ebay cause you never know what youre gettin off there. I have t-mobile and i dont know wether to get this or wait to get the diamond/touch pro... bottom line is i like this phone alot and im ready for a new one...
if i could have waited, i would get the touch pro..
at least from what i think i know
still avalible?
Is the phone still avalible? What would be a reasonable offer at this time if so?
Thanks,
Loretta

help a noob?

I really want to take advantage of these cooked ROM's but despite much reading and frustration I have had no luck and am looking for anyone willing to toss a bone to a noob.
Got my "Unlocked Tilt 2" from eBay and love it but it's got the bloated ATT ROM. Tried Hard-SPL (auto and manual ) but it doesn't work. I considered that maybe it's already been Hard-SPL'd to unlock it by the previous owner and tried flashing ROM's directly but it always stalls at the status bar with 0% until timeout.
Any suggestions...please?
You need to post in the HardSPL thread

Didn't get conned, it's a great phone and a great step up from my Hermes. Pic is attached, as is the info from bootlogger screen if that helps.
Thanks steviewevie, I'll post similar on the hard-SPL board.
You have not got hard spl, when you have, the spl say .85 olinex. then you may enter the world of custom OS's.

Problem solved! My advice for anyone else with a used phone (e.g. eBay) is to do a hard-reset before doing anything else. After doing that I installed enablerapinew.cab and for the first time got the black screen. This didn't fix it completely, but I managed to get manual SSPL to work.
Sense 2.5 is really a great improvement!

I broken my screen but my bootloader is unlocked

Just this morning I broke my nexus's screen. After I was finished crying about it I called up HTC and they said they would replace the screen for a price or I could send it back, they would need a credit card on file, but they would replace it for free since its still under warranty. My problem is, my bootloader is unlocked and I'm rooted. I told them on the phone that I would think about it and call them back, got a case number and all that. I didn't want to tell them about my bootloader because I thought they would write it down and hold it against me. My question is, if I send it back to them and they see the bootloader is unlocked will they charge me for another phone instead of replacing it for free since I voided the warranty by rooting it? Or is my hardware warranty still valid? Also would it be risking it sending it back with an unlocked bootloader for an exchange? or should I just get the screen replaced?
Thanks!
Btw this is how the horrible accident looks

Have you ever tried the search button? This has been discussed SOOOOO many times already. I personally have had 2 phones swapped out with HTC, both with unlocked bootloaders. I received replacement phones with no charge to my card.
I used the search button, but none of the topics answered my question directly, most of them just talk about having a 3rd party replace there screen or their screen had dust and HTC replaced it due to a hardware defect by them. I even asked the guys at android central, they never gave me a clear answer. Thanks for you're answer tho, I was looking for someone with a personal experience of swaps
oh my god that poor nexus!! *cries*
anyways what he means is that HTC has been known to look past the bootloader and replace it for free if youre still under warranty. its like they dont really care we are doing what we are doing

lol no problem. most times they look past that. hopefully they will for u too
be prepared to pay for the screen... cracked screens are not covered under warranty bootloader locked or otherwise..

Should I switch or not?

So I just moved to US and my brother got my the worst Sprint phone ever. I seriously want to upgrade. I had a look at the Sprint store and I am eligible for the upgrade in 2014 which sucks. I can buy a replacement phone from Sprint but they have super crazy prices over there.
So my next option was to buy a used one online. So I found some great deals for used ones and I am satisfied with them. But here comes the dilemma.
My friend told that I could get a TMobile Sim card for a $0.99 (http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phone/T-Mobile-Prepaid-SIM-Activation-Kit) and then use any GSM unlocked phone.
So the Question is whether I should switch to tmobile and go pre-paid OR buy a used one right now and then after 2 years be more happy!
What would you guys do?
Thanks
Yeah, I like pancakes.

You can't use a T-Mobile SIM card in your Spirit phone so either way you need buy a used phone. (Whether it's a Sprint compatible one or a T-Mobile one). Personally, I hate CDMA phones. I'd go with T-Mobile.

Use one click root. You have to create an account and it cist around $30, but the at&t s5 is very tricky. They will do it for you by remote access to your computer. Youll need an internet connection on your computer.

I just got my s5 and it came with g900aucu4bof2.
I bought it because I knew the phone could be rooted because I have had it before. But now all I'm reading is since this update came OTA, that they cannot root it anymore and I'm like bummmmmed out
What I'm wondering is if there might be a way to revert the phone back to an earlier version somehow, or is this maybe only something Samsung can do?

I've been on XDA for three-four years now. Honestly many things are very undocumented. Ie around bootloader and stuff. DO NOT attempt to flash it. I am a flash/dev experienced person and have bricked two GS3s in one day doing this. Stay the **** away from bootloader evne if your phone is rooted. Stick to flashing Roms/Gapps/modem NEVER bootloader.
I returned my upgrade to ATT and found something on craiglist. You have to shp around though to just get the build no and spend some time on weekends going out to chec the phone yourself. Most plebs cant find it if you asked for it
Good luck man. And as already stated, yeah no one wrote this clearly before I decided to spend the time to order this phone online. Idiotic. Samsung ruined a lot of their brand locking it with knox
Look at the HTC 8/9/Nexus (comes unlocked still rootable, no external memory/battery though), Zenfone2 (only reason I didn't get this was lack of battery info, otherwise I would have jumped at it).
