SPL And Radio - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. I have forgotton on how to update my SPL And Radio. Also i would like to know whats the difference death and hard SPL? Or is there any different spl and radios?

The radio/baseband version is the version of the radios firmware. You should have the appropriate radio for your firmware version. If you have 1.5 or higher yours should end in 26I. If you're on 1.1 it will be a different version.
The SPL is the phones bootloader, you boot in to it by holding home and camera.
Radios and SPLs are not the same thing.
Both radio firmwares and SPLs are flashed via recovery. If your signature is correct you have the latest radio and Danger SPL (Danger is 1.33.2005, not .2006 but I assume that's a typo).
1.33.2005 (Can we stop calling it danger?!) repartitions your phones NAND (internal flash memory). It changes the size of the partitions, so (I believe) you have more room in /data and possibly /system (again, not too sure) so if you don't have the 26I it will fail and it will leave you with a corruped nand and a bricked phone.
I don't know much about HSPL but my impression is that it doesn't repartition the nand but features Fastboot (like 1.33.2005). As it doesn't repartition the nand it doesn't support many ROMs which require extra space (Almost all Heros, most Rogers), but I don't think it requires 26i.
Hope I didn't confuse you

SPL ??

how do you find out what spl you have ?
can someone breifly explain to me what SPL is
and i right in thinking SPL is what can make a brick ?
hold camera and power to boot in to the SPL (when the phone is off) and it will tell you. A rainbow screen means it's stock.
The SPLs other than stock allow you to use fastboot to flash things like splash images and restore nandroid backups. Haykuro's SPL (aka "Danger SPL") allows you to run HTC based ROMs like Hero and Rogers. Make sure you have the cupcake/1.5 radio (which you should already have) before flashing, otherwise it will brick.
Downgrade to Hard SPL from Danger SPL??

When I rooted my phone I installed Haykuro's danger spl with the latest radio. I didn't know it can potentially brick your phone (hence the danger part lol). I'm running cyanogen 4.0.1 and it's working just fine so far but I had 3 questions
1) Is Hykuro's Danger SPL only risky during the installation process or can it still possibly brick your phone after a successful installation (in other words, elaborate on the "danger" part please)
2) Can I downgrade to Hard SPL after installing the Danger SPL
3) How would I downgrade to Hard SPL?
Thanks guys!!!
If you are using Haykuro's spl there is no need to downgrade, it will allow you to run anything the hard spl will and more. The only "danger" with haykuros spl is when you flash it, if you successfully flashed it then you have nothing to worry about.
Rodey is correct, that H's SPL does everything hardSPL does (fastboot ect) and sloows you to run HTC Based ROMs. I don't know why you would want to downgrade but if you do it should be as simple as flashing the hardSPL update.zip. Get a secind opinion on that though if you want to try it, I'm no hardSPL expert.
You will only brick your phone with haykuro's SPL if you dont have a PVT board (camer+power to boot in to SPL, it will tell you) and if you dont have to 1.5 radio. To check either in the SPL or Settings > about phone check the baseband is version 2.22.19.26 (if you go to about phone there will be some crap before the number, ignore it).
IMO H's SPL is just handy to have. As long as you have the new radio and a PVT board nothing *touch wood* should go wrong.
One more thing, when flashing the SPL, don't play hot potato with your phone ;-)

Really appreciate both of your time!

Unless you are Unrooting and flash the original spl. I've done this many times so I know it works.
Does SPL: 1.33.2005 help the regular ROMS run better (Cyanogen's)?
I use dxTop, seems to run out of memory quickly.

If you didn't downgrade to RC29/7 then you should have the 1.5 radio. Check by going to Settings > About Phone and baseband version. It should be 2.22.19.26I.
I think you can just flash HardSPL as update.zip as you are, but I' not completely sure...

I swear I've heard people say they have, but dowgrading the radio after installing Danger SPL did cause bricks...
I'll go check
You WILL brick your phone if you attempt to downgrade your radio after flashing the new SPL or if you do not have the latest radio installed before flashing the new SPL

Hmm can't find anyone that said they did :-(
FYI
FYI
@Adrian K and nephron
When I unrooted my spare G1, I got it completely back to stock (circa October original shipment stock)
I downgraded my SPL successfully from the danger SPL all the way back to the original SPL. Also when I downgraded back DREAIMG.nbh, I confirmed at the time that the radio downgraded with it. My original post was on the unlockr.com when I was trying to help David of unlockr.com with some tutorials.
My original quote from unlockr
BTW: I have confirmed via the bootloader that the radio DOWNGRADES back to stock by applying the DREAIMG.nbh update FYI
From the bootloader I am now at
DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-1.22.12.29
Sep 2 2008

I think it's downgrading the Radio, while on Danger SPL that will brick your phone b.
I have also gone from Hard to Danger back to Hard again with no issues.
if i use the 1click root method and then install cyanogens 4.0.1... do i actually need to do the hardspl and the radio or is that all taken care of? that's the only thing that's confusing me a little bit...

If you are talking about the one click method that is know on the market as recovery flasher, that only takes care of granting root access and flashing cyanogen's recovery image. The radio and spl upgrades are on you.
Try here for more explanation
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550050
yea that's what i'm talking about... now don't get me wrong, i believe you guys here on xda first and foremost... but theres a video tutorial on android and me, and it doesn't show them installing the radio and spl between using the recovery flasher and then installing cyanogens 4.0.1... are they not doing it right in the video or are the radio and spl optional? all the guides on here seem to say you do have to flash them but the video clearly shows them not stopping to do it. so maybe their video just sucks haha. but any idea on that?
thanks so much
I have 1 click rooted and installed Cyanogen 4.01, I am on CRC1, my understanding was as I was already on 1.5 Cupcake, my current SPL and Radio were current.
I read somewhere that the 1 click method is only temporary root. But if someone could elaborate on this it would be very helpful. Also what is this hard spl ?

Radio upgrade

I just had a quick question, Can you just use the new radio upgrade without the danger spl, or do you HAVE to flash the spl with the radio.....
does the hero radio offer any advantages over the cupcake radio?
You do not need to use the danger spl in order to use the new radio image, the radio image is just the newest radio software, you could get better service with or you might not so flash it see how it works for you, I always download the newest for better service for me
You can flash to the newest radio whenever, the trouble comes when people have the danger spl and flash backwards.

Downgrade radio

Hi,
I seem to have some issues delievering SMS under the new radio (I assume it to be the cause).
I'm currently using both SPL and Radio from Haykuro (that I flashed in order to try on Hero roms), but, having the above in account, I'd like to return to stock radio (version 1.smth).
So, taking teh brick factor into account I was considering doing the following:
1) Flash DangerSPL
2) Flash Stock Radio
Is the procedure safe/correct/in correct order?
Where can I get the stock radio?
DO NOT flash the danger spl and downgrade radio, youll brick for sure. Id just try a reflash of the radio, rom or both first.
Download the older radios at getyourdroidon.com

HardSPL versus Haykuro's "Danger" SPL versus Engineering SPL

Can someone please clarify the exact differences between these SPLs?
As far as I understand it, the HardSPL *is* the Engineering SPL, and Haykuro's Danger SPL is slightly larger than the HardSPL, allowing larger ROMs to be flashed.
A little clarity would be very helpful.
Also, is there a performance advantage to using the HardSPL versus Haykuro's SPL for a ROM that can be flashed using either?
Actually, I believe the danger spl is the same as the engineers spl. Not the Hard and Eng. are the same. Can you do fastboot with the hard spl? I heard that you can't do that with it. I don't know. The only spl I have had is the perfected spl and the Engineers 1.33.2005 that I now have. i have also wondered the same question that you have.

No this is wrong. Engineering/HardSPL are virtually the same. The HardSPL has removed the regional restrictions from the Dream Engineering SPL, but they are the same. The Haykuro aka DangerSPL is actually an SPL ported from the HTC Magic for the HTC Dream. It repartitions the NAND, increasing the size of the system and data partition to ~90mb from around ~45mb by taking it away from the cache partition which is of no use to rooted users (it is used to store OTA's during the update process) This makes it possible to have ROM's up to 90mb on the phone.
You can do fastboot with all SPL's besides the stock SPL since they are ALL engineering SPL's (the .2005 is the Magic's engineering SPL as well)
Thank you for clarifying B-Man.
So aside from increasing the capacity for a ROM to 90mb, is there any performance gain to be had from voluntarily using the DangerSPL (1.33.2005), or from voluntarily *not* using it if not needed?
I was considering reverting to the HardSPL (45mb) if there is a performance gain, as CM 4.2.5 doesn't require the DangerSPL.
If there's no performance gain to be had, its a moot point....

There is no real performance improvement. It's just additional storage for your phone's rom.

You learn something new every day.
The performance improvement claims would be in favor of Haykuro SPL, but there is no real gain. The only reason this was claimed was because there was more space to store stuff (the same way a bigger harddrive speeds up the computer because theres more space to store things. there should actually be no performance difference)
I have been running Cyanogens Roms since I have rooted my phone
I dont even remember what spl I used. My fastboot looks like this http://twitpic.com/tmwtn (I found this pic on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=589344)
I want to use/try out this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592466
which requires the Danger SPL.
From what I have read here the DangerSPL and EngineerSPL are the same,
Is it safe to say I can flash this ROM?
If yours says "1.33.2005 (DREA10000)" then you have the "danger" spl. I wish some one would put a better explanation of this at the top of each forum so people would be able to figure this out. Just a sticky with how to fire up the fastboot screen and a list of the possible spls and radios. Maybe I'll work on the list.

dreaimg.nbh+death spl= safe?... help, bout to flash

I have to go back to full stock for insurance purposes, it wont pick up any cell service. The dreaimg.nbh is a full img if i remeber correctly. That being recovery, system, RADIO, and spl, right. If thats the case i SHOULD be fine right? I not 100% sure about the spl being in it, so i wanted to make sure. Thanks!
If you're talking about the RC29 for TMo G1, then yeah that one has everything in it. When I downgraded I fastboot flashed the original SPL first in case something happened during the process. That way I could be fairly certain I wouldn't wind up with a hard brick.

I do not know exactly, what dreaimg.nbh contains, but I boubt it will not contain a SPL, so flashing it may brick your phone. For security reasons I would first flash a SPL which is compatibe to a 1.x radio, i.e. stock-spl or 1.33.2003.

It contains the following...
-Stock Radio
-Stock SPL .blahblah
-1.1 Android(RC29)
Dont worry, ive flashed the nbh 2+ times just for testing purposes while having the Haykuro/Danger SPL & 26I/new radio
Just flashed DREAIMG.nbh over a 2.22.23.02 radio and Haykuro SPL - everything went smooth as DREAIMG.nbh contains stock radio and SPL. You can downgrade without fear.
